A 4 book series literally titled as high school is picking of 15 years in the future. This author actually thinks this is appropriate and not completely fraudulent to her readers. She even seems to think she’s slick and everyone can’t see what she is doing with the plot. Brooklyn is still alive, they will get together FIFTEEN YEARS LATER! . Heres how it will be set up... He is an unrepentant manwhore who has probably screwed hundreds of women. The author actually thinks all of her readers are dumb, basic, and shallow. She seems to think, idiotic plot will make us swoon over him, because who cares where his d*** went as long as he only “loved” her. It’s clear as day and been done to death by much better writers.
And edited to add that that I was completely correct in my entire review, well ahead of time. So after seeing someone post about the note she made at Matchmaker, I borrowed it to read the note only. And it serves to prove that theirs is definitely not the author for me. You really don’t get the issue. The issues isn’t whether you killed off Brooklynn (which come one wasn’t even a good plot, it was beyond obvious to anyone who even thought about it that she wasn’t dead) it’s that you fraudulently sold people on this series. This isn’t a high school series. Who cares if you killed her off or not. You wrote a multi book series about HIGH SCHOOLERS and then complexly switched genres making them wait 16 years for a conclusion. If that wasn’t enough, “Mr perfect” Matt acts like he’s above everyone and such a loyal guy because he didn’t fall in love with anyone else. Ok, but who cares if he didn’t fall in love. That’s not even a choice really unless you avoid all women, which of course he doesn’t. Nope just like every other basic guy out there, just lives the playboy bachelor life screwing whoever he feels like. How is he any different then any other manwhore? Sorry author who seems to think you wrote someone special (seriously have to LOL at that) he’s just as shallow and basic as the rest of the heroes by untalented authors. At least be creative if you’re going to write this crap. I mean seriously. So then what happens to really make this just categorically awful? He falls in love against me is intimate with the heroines best friend. Yep. I don’t care how you pee in a glass and try to sell it as lemonade... it’s just... Not. You wrote a “romantic” series without a HEA. You wrote a series about high schoolers, only it isn’t. What you are is a fraud who doesn’t have any problem stealing peoples money by lying to them. If you weren’t or had a conscience, you’d have just been honest in your book summaries and what you labeled it as. You didn’t. You’re a thief and a liar.

Loved it! Hated the cliffhanger!!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💋💋💋💋💋
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📙📕📗📘
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 👨🏻👱🏻‍♀‍🧔🏻👩🏻👱🏼‍♂️

I have to say, I really hated this at the start, though since I signed up to read this as an ARC, I was determined to stick with it. I have read all the previous books in the series and must confess that I never liked Matthew Caldwell. I thought he was weak, stupid and not worthy of Brooklyn (his girlfriend in high school)

It didn’t help that Brooklyn always seemed to get the short side of the stick in just about everything in her life. Matthew had what I thought were stupid reasons for hiding his relationship with Brooklyn and treating her like she was his dirty secret. Sure he was being blackmailed, but the best way out of blackmail is to tell the truth and I thought he should have done that early on.

So when this book starts out with him as a high school football coach (because he has nothing better to do), and wanting to sleep with his best friend’s wife, I hated it all. I mean really? Totally ironic that in high school he did so much to conceal the fact that James’ girlfriend kissed him so that James wouldn’t do something to hurt himself when at the time he was the one that did nothing wrong.

Now for Matt to be hanging out with James’ wife when James isn’t home and wanting her, just makes me want to punch him in the face. Not to mention the fact that though he describes James as his friend, but still hates him underneath it all and blames him for all that happened before Brooklyn died instead of realizing it was the way Matt himself dealt with everything that caused everything. Plus he resents James for having the life he thinks he should have had.

I was so fed up with Matt that I put the book down for a few days and when I picked it back up I still felt the same about him. However, I also felt sorry for the guy. I mean he did the wrong things in the past when it came to Brooklyn but he knows it and he feels a ton of guilt even 16 years later for the way he treated her. He knows what he did even though he sometimes (in his head) blames James for things. So I wanted to see him get his happy ending.

Also it was nice to learn that Matt isn’t only a high school football coach. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It is just that he came from a wealthy family his friends are wealthy, so it seemed that for him to only be a football coach would point to him having a lack of ambition. So it was nice to find out that he is the CEO of the city’s largest financial firm, who volunteers as a high school football coach as well as turning a fixer upper New York brownstone into a nice home.

Matt has a friend named Tanner who is quite the character and adds quite a bit of comic relief to this book. He owns some type of sex club/matchmaking service or something like that and may or may not do odd things on Tuesdays and Thursdays which involve wearing a man bun and dressing up in crazy colored tuxedo’s.

Anyway, the more I read, the more I liked this book and Matt. I was so glad I didn’t DNF this one, because the story was good and there were all kinds of crazy characters in Matt’s life.

“It took me a second to recognize the little man as Nigel, Tanner’s houseboy. I hadn’t recognized him because today he was dressed in some weird lederhosen. All the other times I had been here he’d always been outfitted in a strange Victorian era butler outfit.”

Suffice it to say, I am so glad I kept reading and found this book to be a breathe of fresh air. It totally surprised me and it was so different from what I expected. The path the story took was so much better than the predictable way I had been prepared for. Tanner and Nigel were a terrific bonus to the story and I had no idea what to make of them. At one point I thought Tanner might be a vampire despite this not being a paranormal story.

Anyway, I ended up loving it and now am vexed with Ivy Smoak because I had to add all those other books about james, Rob and Mason to my TBR. I also really want a book about Tanner, I didn’t see one in her list so if there already is one, someone please let me know.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

ok now i only liked this because it was funny, i mean that ending was predictable but tell me why it’s always the side characters that carry the whole mf book? this shit got me giggling. cant lie, i thought this was a high school romance going in because of the title and to find out every character is full grown adult, some with kids, and married….i was sick to my stomach. i don’t usually like reading outside of my age group but i cant lie when i say this shit is so mf funny like since when were the non-melanin folks so funny? gah damn

Dawn, I’m not real sure what book you read because this book has not been released! The author Ivy Smoak confirmed no copies have been read! These are just wrong and hateful words towards the author and her supporters!! We as a group find them offensive in nature and context especially since they are based on your opinions not facts!! This is a extremely well written series and if your a true Bibliophilia or bibliophilism which is someone that loves books, and a bibliophile or bookworm is an individual who loves and frequently reads books you would know sometimes the story takes time to develop and you would know the meaning of the word “ Series “ meaning more than one book!! I agree everyone is entitled to their opinion you just don’t need to take such a hateful approach towards the author and their supporters!! If you are reading this review please read the book for yourself to form an opinion because this review is an opinion not based in facts.... carry on rant over

this "woman he can never have" better be a resurrected brooklyn. cant she have just been abducted and hidden? i pray that she isn't dead. if he finds new love then im going to find a way to walk into the book, take brooklyn down from heaven, and put her in his arms

even if she doesnt get resurected im probably still gonna end up reading this book because i like breaking my own heart like that

i dont know if any of y’all have read abi gline’s The Best Goodbye but it is legit about a girl and a boy fall in love and the girl dies (or so the boy thinks.) fast forward 9 yrs and the girl (obviously not dead) is mom to his kid and the boy is a total player. she goes *in disguise* so see if he is good enough for his kid. im hoping that this book is literally going to be the exact same thing. maybe this “woman he cant have” is brooklyn in disguise. far fetched but i have hope

**after reading it, tons of spoilers**

oh god. oh god. oh god.

so she is alive, just like i predicted. but oh god.

the fact that matt painted pictures of brooklyn just broke my heart. you know that you have to be truly in love to wait 16 years for someone.

the entire book i was just waiting for brooklyn to show up, but she never did. there was lots of crying on my part and then acceptance that matt and kennedy were going to be together. and then the ending.

matt and kennedy fell in love so quickly. they didnt have much time to talk and get to know each other and the one thing they bonded over was brooklyns death, and that isnt real. but on the other hand, both matt and brooklyn have been changed by this world during their time away, and they may not be in love anymore.

in the end, i really hope that matt picks brooklyn, but i wouldnt be surprised if she finds someone new.

so, until the next book comes, ill be sitting here in agony, begging ivy to hurry up and just write the darn book

In the fourth installment of the Empire High series, we moved on from the high school backdrop when we flashed forward 16 years.

Told from Matthew’s point of view, this second half of the series has a much different feel. First of all: laugh-out-loud scenes abound! Second: Tanner and Nigel. Third: 💔

It was interesting to see what the lives of the Untouchables were like, but honesty, I’m impatient to see where all of this is leading. The cliffy at the end was not really a surprise since I’ve come into the series late, but it has me on pins and needles just the same.

Empire High Matchmaker the fourth book in the Empire High series by Ivy Smoak.

After reading the first three books I was so nervous and anxious about going into Matchmaker. If you have read those you may be feeling the same way. The fear of the unknown is a scary thing.
The many fans of Ivy Smoak are very much aware that she is the diabolical QUEEN of killer cliffhangers. She also has the amazing talent to bring us into this world of fiction that feels so real. She brings the characters to life and has us wrapped in every emotion possible.
We begin Matchmaker 16 years after the 3rd book of the series. We find Matt stuck in life not moving forward. Hanging onto his promises and vows to Brooklyn.
Ivy takes us on a journey through sadness, grief, guilt, tears, danger, humor, passion, hope and new love.
She introduces some new characters and we see a few familiar ones too.
Tanner and Nigel oh boy what a pair. Tanner is a quirky fun guy that has the best bromance with Matt their chemistry is unbelievable. Now Nigel and Matt that’s whole different hilarious part of the book. They along with the old gang will keep you entertained throughout this one.
Like I said I was anxious going in but when you are a fan of an author you really need to put all personal preferences, thoughts and ideas aside because this is Ivys story to tell. Her hard work, her time spent writing, her tears and her love that is poured into every page.
Give it a chance you may not like everything (I know I didn’t like a situation but that’s my personal opinion) but the way it was written was very well done.
Thank you Ivy for your perseverance and a job well done. You have “Smoaked” me again with this one especially with that killer cliffhanger!!!!

WOW...Every time I think Ivy has outdone herself she takes it to another level 🤦‍♀️ Empire High is absolutely hands down my favorite series! If you know Ivys books then you know that's a really hard statement to make! I'm trying to put in words how incredibly this book is but I really don't think I can.. I honestly don't think I've ever laughed more than I did while reading this book even though its absolutely an emotional roller-coaster.. Wow Ivy! I can't wait to see what happens next because I still have chills from reading and I can't wait to reread it all over again! To say I highly recommend this book would be an understatement! Absolutely Incredible!

Gosh, even 1 star seems too much for this book. I don't have anything against the author or her visions. But just, NO. I was hoping she wouldn't go in that direction but she did, ugh. Yes, I get it. It needs to be a cliffhanger, the series is not over yet, blah blah. It was still a major letdown though. Hyping it for a year and then bam! nope. She made all the readers be invested in a character and then proceeds to write an ending & and a whole entire book doing her dirty. I know she will probably make sense of everything in the ff. books but I can't help how I feel right now. Like I've wasted ever reading this series. And she thinks it's cool because she gets to hook us to reading the next books just to get answers. And that for me is all about 💵💰💵.
P.S. Sigh, I feel bad writing this comment but it's true so I wouldn't delete it. Fyi, this is my first time ever writing this kind of comment and it is 💔

Best Book yet

I have been of Ivy's for 5 years now. I have read every one of her book and have loved every single one. For the longest time The Hunted series especially Addiction have been my favorite But EHM might just be my favorite now. You go through all the emotions when you read an Ivy Smoak book. At the end of EHB I felt broken and lost but Ivy made up for it with EHM and I never doubted she would. Matt is broken and only 1 girl can fix it for him but he can't have her. Will Matt finally find his HEA? Will he find someone to mend his broken Hartwell? Well Read EHM and find out! 5 stars as always Ivy! Can't wait for book 5 and 6!

Sixteen years ago Matt made a promise to only love one person. She was his one, his only, his future, and without her there would be no one. That was the vow he had wanted to speak on his wedding day, but instead he whispered them over her grave. He was a man of his word, hurt, broken, and only for her. But as the years passed his vow weighs heavily, more so as those closest to him seize the happiness he'd always envisioned he'd have. Everything he had ever wanted lay buried, along with his dreams of the future. But as life moves around him, he can't help but feel the void, the life he could have had and wonder if, maybe, a broken vow was the only way to mend a broken soul. There was only one person he could see himself with, one person to breach his defenses and make him feel almost whole, and she was the only person he could never have.

Matchmaker is book four in Ivy Smoak's Empire High series. Oh my God, I have never read a book that had me in fits of laughter on one page and sniffling on the next. Absolutely fantastic. I loved the characters, and having read every last one of Ivy's books, seeing adult Matt was every bit as soul destroying as I imagined. I hurt for him, I really did. Ivy has a way of creating characters that effortlessly steal, break, and mend your heart. I read this book in one sitting, refusing to put it down, and all I want to do now is read the whole series again. I seriously can't get enough of this author, she raises the bar to a whole new level, and I have no shame in admitting I'm not only addicted but emotionally invested in her work. This book ticks all the boxes, engaging, emotional, funny, heartbreaking, and moreish. I already need the next book. If you've not read this series yet, start now.

Oh where to begin...

First of all, this was just absolutely brilliantly written. There's such a perfect balance of humor, seriousness, and outrageous! You guys aren't ready for this one!

Ivy, yet again, has outdone herself! I went through every emotion reading EHM. I thought EHB had accomplished that, but nope. This bad boy is *chef's kiss*.

New and returning characters were so well developed with backstories that intertwine in ways you will never see coming. I found myself laughing, crying, and also yelling (because Ivy just makes me crazy). Matchmaker is Ivy's best book to date! It's literally EVERYTHING. I'm amazed at the way she has tied every one of her books in with each other, whether just a side note of the characters or even a whole past. I'm absolutely in LOVE with Matchmaker and I need the next one like.. yesterday.

Now for the goodies:

Oh there's spiciness. Don't you worry.

There is LOTS of laughter. I really don't know how she comes up with these things or these characters because it's beyond amazing. I just want to jump into this book. Literally.

And for the drama... There's a LOT of that. Bada** female characters, outrageous, funny, and caring male characters.

Warning: There is a cliffhanger. But it IS SO GOOD.

Overall, this was so well written. It painted such an amazing picture of the Ivy-Verse while leaving just enough for the imagination of the reader. Best. One. Ever.

I think the author is dragging this story when it needs to be finished. I liked the previous books but this one dragged on and some details were really unnecessary. Like Henry’s mom. She dragged the character and her frequent visits like a big issue but in the ended finished it so ubruptly.

Oh. My. Gawd. Just give me a second to process EVERYTHING I just read in the past 22 1/2 hours. Honestly, I would have been done with this book sooner if I didn't have to go to work.

Breath in. Breath out. Ok.

First off WOW! The raw intense emotions. I felt everything. All the emotions that were poured into this book I felt through the very fiber of my being. A total connection from author to character to reader. Talk about a sensory overload.

Secondly, this gave so much closure after the 3rd book but yet still somehow was gut wrenching. The comedy reliefs were phenomenal and hit the spots just right to help dry up your tears long enough until the next gut wrenching scene took place.

And lastly, THAT ENDING. I was somewhat expecting it, but now I need the 5th book to get even more closure from the 3rd book.

Bravo, Ivy. Bravo! This is by far the best.

If you decided to give up on this series based on the ending to Betrayal…. You need to pick up this book and read it.

Matthew. Freaking. Caldwell. I thought I would end this book with some closure for him. I was wrong.

Ivy did an amazing job bringing all of the characters from her series together in Matchmaker. It was amazing to read the gang back together again. The “newer” characters of Tanner and Nigel brought some much needed laughter to the series.

I refuse to spoil this…. But I’m not still convinced that how Matt thinks he feels isn’t just because of convenience. I am so excited to see what happens in book 5!! You won’t feel like throwing this book and cursing and swearing off Ivy books after this. You’ll be begging for Book 5 to be released sooner than 2022!!

First, this book is 4th in a series and it can't be read as a stand alone as it won't make much sense to you if you read it before the others. Second, I'm really glad this book takes place 16 years after the previous books. Nothing against high school romance, I just prefer adult romance.

That said, I've enjoyed the whole series. Besides the romance, it's filed with lots of unexpected surprises. This book continued with even more. I don't want to give away anything, so I'll keep it basic. Matt lost the love of his life 16 years ago and has been living a solitary structured life. No dating or falling in love, just work and random one night stands. He thinks he is hiding his pain from his friends and family, but they see through his facade and decide that they need to intervene by setting him up with dates. All the while, Matt, who is not interested, learns that he and his friends might be in danger from his past. He confides in his friend Tanner and even stays at his house for safety reasons. Tanner is wealthy and had a house boy named Nigel. Tanner and Nigel are 2 of the strangest characters. There is definitely another story going on there and I hope we get the details in the next book. Anyway, when Matt runs into a woman from his past, he starts feeling things for her that he feels he shouldn't, but he can't help himself. And just when you think that Matt will get his happily ever after, a knock at the door will change everything. How will it change? Not sure, because that's where the book ends!

I honestly thought this book would be the last of the series, but I was obviously wrong. There are so many unanswered questions. In fact, I'll probably have to read this book again a day or two before the 5th one is released so I can remember everything that was left unanswered.

I also read the authors note at the end of this book and was shocked to learn about all the hate mail and messages she received for the ending of book three. I was very upset to read that. These books she writes are her babies. She writes these stories and she gets to decide how they will play out. If you don't like how the story plays out, that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion. But to seek out the author and make her feel terrible because the story didn't go the way you wanted it to is just wrong. Not everyone will like every book they read. There have been plenty of books I did not like or something in the story I didn't like, but I've never contacted an author to complain, let alone say horrible things to them. Telling an author you didn't like an ending or how a character ends up is one thing, but to be filled with so much contempt and hate that you feel the need to spew that hatred onto the author is reprehensible. Remember, these authors are real live people, with feelings, not just some unseen entity that produces books. If you don't like a book, just move on. Do better. Be better.

The good news: Empire High Matchmaker is releasing in 5 days and it sounds cliche but it’s the best one in the series yet! The great news: there’s going to be a book 5!! The meh news: that means we got a classic Ivy Smoak cliffhanger at the end of this one and I want book 5 NOW! Whoever said patience was a virtue clearly never read an Ivy Smoak series with a cliffhanger 🤣

I was fortunate enough to get to read an Advance Reader Copy of Matchmaker. The ARC showed up as I was battling a bad headache that normally would have had me avoiding doing anything, but nothing was going to delay my reading Matchmaker! And it was totally worth it.

If you’ve read Ivy’s The Hunted, Light to My Darkness, and Men of Manhattan series, you’ve met Matthew Caldwell and gang before as adults. To be honest, I thought Matt was a rather shallow guy, but reading his full story in the Empire High series has shown a much deeper side and quite possibly made him my favorite of all the characters (but no one tell Rob, because I don’t want to hurt his feelings lol). The development of Matt’s character from high school to 16 years later in Matchmaker is incredible.

If you’ve read any of the books that had Matt in them, you must read this one. It’s really unfair to him to not read his story as an adult! And to Ivy, who created this beautiful character and story.

I don’t know how Ivy is going to top this one in book 5, but she always does and I’m so excited to see what happens next!

First of all, this new cover is yum! Now let me rave about this book without spoiling anything. Where do I begin? Okay, so this is adult Matt's perspective, and the boy is a mess. He's really just stuck and not living life to the fullest. And yeah, he's a big part of the group we all love, but he kind of keeps himself on the fringe. He's just a broken guy. And as sad as things are for him, there were so many moments in this book that had me cracking up, out loud, making my husband ask what's so funny from across the house. Yes, it was that hilarious. His friend...beyond his main friend group, this other friend is really something else.

This was worth the wait and all the teases. This series is so good but it also drives me crazy. There were definitely surprises and the end shocked me! And now I gotta wait again. That's the hardest part. But I'm sure I'll reread this before the next one comes along.

It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me throw my kindle across the room - Ivy always does this to me! I wanted to savor it, I really did, but I have no self control when it comes to this series. I read it in one sitting. Secrets were finally revealed, questions were answered, and in true Ivy fashion, the cliffhanger made me audibly gasp out loud. Best series of 2020 and 2021 by far!

I won’t go into plot details because I really don’t want to give anything away. If you ever do one thing for me, read this series! It has EVERYTHING. It’s swoon-worthy, packed with laughs, it’s emotional & yes, kind of heartbreaking, and filled with characters you will grow to love like real people.

Ivy, I admire that you’ll never let the haters win. You’ve created something brilliant here, and I’m so glad I’m here as a reader to watch it all unfold. Book 5 is going to INSANE! 🤩

Wake me up when it’s 2022!

How is it possible not to love him after this book?

I was heartbroken for him after EH Betrayal, and in this book the tears have been streaming almost constantly- except for when laughing so much!

I don’t even have the words to express all the emotions I went through whilst reading this book - and like the other books in the Empire High series - it will take me some time to get myself put back together again.

If you haven’t read the Empire High series I strongly suggest that you start at the beginning as soon as possible. You will not be sorry!

Thank you, Ivy, for writing this book, and the entire world of Caldwells and Hunters.

Wow! Just... WOW!

I spent two weeks preparing for the release of this book. I re-read the first three Empire High books as well as The Hunted series, Men of Manhattan series, and The Light to my Darkness series: 13 books plus 5 short stories. That's 4870 pages! I even made a TikTok video about it!

I have immersed myself in the world of these characters and I have fallen in love with them.

Empire High Betrayal (book 3) ends in tragedy. When I read it the first time I didn't realize there were more books in the series. I didn't realize the series was intertwined with others. I thought that was how the story ended. I hated it. I cried and cried. Then I realized that Ivy's books ALWAYS give me the one thing I like most from a book: Unpredictability. All of my favorite books/series are the ones that you can't tell from the beginning how they will end. You can never guess how sweet or steamy one of Ivy's books will be. Sometimes I am blushing, thinking "What did I just read?" Other times I'm laughing so hard that I can't speak coherently enough to explain to my husband what I'm laughing about. Other times I'm sobbing. So here I am, totally caught up in this world and loving it.

At the end of Betrayal Ivy wrote a note promising that someone would heal Matt's broken heart. This book did not disappoint. I had so many theories about what was going to happen. Most of them were wrong. I had so many questions. Many of them are still unanswered. But this book was exactly what it needed to be. I cannot wait until the next book comes out (in 2022) and yes, I will be revisiting all 14 books again to immerse myself back into the world of the Hunter and Caldwell families.

This is a dynamic series and the books need to be read in order. I recommend reading all of Ivy's books in chronological order (www.ivysmoak.com/chronological-order) like I did to avoid spoilers. The "main characters" James and Penny have 7 books (and a few short stories) but as their story unfolds the other characters get their own books and all of the stories are woven together and overlap. The dynamics between friends was one of my favorite parts of this collection and I loved that each of the guys gets to tell their story.

If you're new to the series, start with Untouchables. If you're returning to Empire High after reading Betrayal, I hope this book heals your heartbreak like it did mine... and Matt's.

At Last! EHM was absolutely 100% worth the wait!!

Oh my gosh. I don't even know what to say because I don't want to give any spoilers, and I know I'll get carried away easily.

Oh Matt 💔 I just wanted to hug him so hard!
I had a lump in my throat for a lot of this book.
I also laughed so hard I woke my husband up and scared the crap out of him (he was not impressed). And for once it had nothing to do with Rob!
I was so angry a couple of times too, and felt anxious for ages just waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.
My heart was beating so fast at times. Especially at the end!
That bloody ending!! I think everyone expected a cliffhanger because, well, Ivy... but I didn't expect it to go down like it did!
I am already in need of book 5, and am soooooo not looking forward to possibly a year wait! But, even if it does end up being a year, I know it'll be worth it ❤
It's so nice to see deeper in to Matt in this book, and get a better understanding of him as an adult, instead of just the snippets we saw through the Hunted Series.

As usual, Ivy sent me on an emotional rollercoaster, and I'm grateful for it. Absolutely fantastic 🥰❤
