Regan’s last tour of duty left her broken and scarred, ending with her untimely discharge. Now, thanks to her PTSD, she’s jobless and living on the streets. She wonders if she’ll ever find some semblance of a normal life. One fateful encounter while standing in line at the bank changes everything as she struggles to heal and find purpose again. Jordan has given up on finding someone to share her life with and has immersed herself in her work. Her job as a defense attorney in one of the city’s most prominent firms is fulfilling, but she’s never felt more alone. While out running errands one afternoon, she decides to go inside the bank instead of waiting in line for the automated teller. Little does she know that a split-second decision will forever change the course of her life.
A Kindle Unlimited book I came across and decided to give a go - and I'm so glad I did. I would recommend it. It's well written, and will grab hold of your heart.
It features a main character that is a former Marine Sniper, in Regan McKenzie. When we meet her she is homeless and struggling with PTSD. But while you can take the girl out of the army, you can never take the army out of the gal. So when she ends up in the middle of a bank robbery, she springs to action saving many people, and endearing herself to many more through her selfless actions and bravery. In the bank was Attorney Jordan O'Connor, who takes Regan in and starts forming a beautiful bond of friendship - and slowly more.
Regan is stoic and doesn't want to let anyone in, especially this beautiful green eyed voluptuous attorney that has her feeling all sorts of things she hasn't in years. They barter a deal to make Regan feel more comfortable in helping Jordan do small renovations and upgrades to her house, and also do the cooking and cleaning in return for room and food.
Things progress, but Jordan finds herself having a bit of gay panic, because of things that happened with her parents in College, which made her keep to the 'straight' and narrow. There's also another lesbian couple that befriends Reagan, plus an old army buddy in the police force that helps Regan get a job there. It's lovely to witness Reagan and her world open up, and have her let in people that genuinely care for her, and vice versa.
The only thing I did find a bit tedious was the constant back and forth on both lovers feelings of rejection and not opening up, despite clearly saying and showing they loved each other. So it was a little melodramatic, at times. Such as with people pestering Regan for closing herself off, when I really hadn't seen any signs of her doing that, and getting on her case a bit too much. I get it, tough love, but it felt a little heavy handed at times. There's also an overly dramatic ending, but again I can't be too mad at it. The characters did just touch my heart with their vulnerabilities and imperfections, so I embraced it.
This was a pretty good read which I liked. It did get a tad repetitive which got boring after the third, fourth, fifth, sixth... you get it, time when it came to Regans issues. As the reader, we're already privy to the demons she's going through but having to read it over and over again when someone else comes into the picture was a bit much.
Whilst, I felt for Regan with all that shit going on in her head, I really believe that she is one lucky sonofagun considering how things turn out so right for her from the moment Jordan comes into her life. Jordan is a pretty great character, the way she steps up for Regan and brings her home.
Usually, when I didn't finish a book, it only because it's not my thing, I'll delete it from my kindle and leave it without review, but this one, I feel like I should say something.
The book actually has a good start, but everything feels wrong as the side characters involve. What I don't understand is their interactive way to Regan and how Regan responds considering her issue. Regan, the former Marine, has been in the war zone and kills many; she has also been interrogated with torture during her service. She's suffering PTSD and obviously has an intimacy issue(at least it show in the first few chapters), and both the main character Jorden and two side characters Maggie and her wife April, know Regan has those issue.
The first one that makes me cringe is when the four of them chilly in Maggie and April's yacht, Maggie jokily pushes Regan into the water... Now, I know people who have PTSD didn't make them fragile all the time, but seriously? Later on, Regan put down her wet clothes and only wear shorts and a tank top. She covers her body with a towel because she didn't want to show her tattoo(those tattoos cover her scars). What April did is unbearable.
As April's eyes followed the movement of the blanket, she gasped. "Oh let me see." She reached a hand out and ran it over Regan's left thigh, tracing the colorful koi on her skin.
Because of that, it brings all the memories back on Regan, and there's a panic attack. April trying to talk her out of it(but you are the one who causes it...), and you know what April says to Regan after the panic attack?
"Very good. Now, tell me why you're so anxious about showing your friends your incredible tattoo."
Why are you pushing her? It's like they are trying to push all the wrong buttons at once in every chapter, and it almost causes me a panic attack. But I decided to give this book another chance, so I keep reading it. Then there's a misunderstanding when Regan kisses Jorden, and Jorden snapped. Regan thought she's unwanted and decided to run away from Jordan. She packs all her things and drove away to live on the street again.
When Maggie finds her later in that evening, this is what she says to Regan:
"Don't let your pride get in the way and hurt her(April) feelings again. You don't know how much it hurt her(April) to find out that you chose to be out here instead of coming to us."
Since when it's about you? I'm upset when Maggie used the word "pride" because it's not just that and you know Regan have issues, and I'm surprised Regan didn't push Maggie away. Instead, she went to Maggie and April's house. This is what April says to Regan.
"How do you think I feel, knowing you refused to come to us for help? That you'd rather be out there than ask us for help? I thought we were friends."
Again, this is not about you! What makes me emotionally nauseous and confusing is that the author made Regan apologize to Maggie and April.
"I let my pride get in the way of my better judgment, and hurt you. I'm sorrier than I can say, and hope you both can forgive me."
That is when I decided to stop reading this book. I rather there's no sign that Regan has intimacy issues because they're doing all the wrong things in the book, things that will only push people who have these issues further away and shell themselves more. If I were Regan, I'd felt intimidated and manipulated. I felt like the author didn't take this topic well.
This book was amazing. I literally could not put it down. I was drawn into Jordan and Regan from the beginning. This book may have some triggers for some people. It deals with a lot of PTSD from the war. It also dives into the effects it has on the people surrounding that person who is suffering. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and this book is just that. Something traumatic brought Regan and Jordan together when they needed someone the most!
I am impressed with this book. Cavaleu is a new author to me and they weaved a tale that had me salivating to know more and more and more. I found myself enthralled with protag Regan's story. She was an honourable, intelligent, deeply scarred, emotional, caring woman who couldn't seem to catch a break from all her haunted memories of her time as a Marine. She was the type who would give the shirt off her back to a stranger in need, or give away her last dollar to someone who needed it more. I found that attractive, but it was kind of detrimental to her own health. Regan was a pro at hiding her true feelings and fears and buried them deep inside covering it with kind handouts she'd give to whoever thought needed it. Gutting a bathroom, installing new flooring, cooking elaborate, delicious meals, was her mask. How can anyone see the real you when you're charming them with your skills? Her PTSD and nightmares is what kept her from truly hiding away from the world. Jordan was an angel disguised as a lawyer who came to Regan's rescue. Whereas Regan rescued people from the bad guy with her combat skills and sniper, Jordan rescued Regan with her compassion, friendship, and eventually love. Cavaleu brilliantly built up Jordan and Regan's relationship slowly, which is how it should be when someone had the problems Regan had. However, I was pleasantly surprised when both landed in bed halfway through the story as opposed to three-quarters into the story like a lot of slow burns are. The chapters were low in numbers, but the lengths of them were long, giving us time to get to know everyone. I loved how we got to see Regan go from a homeless ex-Marine with insane skills to a woman who blossomed into a friend to others, a sister, aunt, and a lover. One thing that I really liked and that seemed more authentic was the ending. It was a happy ending but with obstacles that Regan still needed to address. She wasn't perfect in the end, the author didn't have us believing that just because the book ended meant Regan's problems had vanished.
I have no experience in the Military and I have zero idea what it's like to suffer from the type of PTSD Regan suffered from, but Cavaleu wrote a believable tale about suffering in a world where you feel so alone and so lost, you don't feel worthy of anyone's help. Regan was a proud woman who was capable of a lot things, except defeat. Sometimes pride isn't always a good thing and I believe Regan learned that as she slowly healed surrounded by people who fought tooth and nail to show Regan that she was worthy.
This is a well written and interesting hot lesbian romance which at the same time gives the reader a lot of insight into things like being a sniper in something like the war in Afghanistan and what it means to have PTSD.
The charaters are well worked and very likeable, my only criticism is with the ending. Regan is bit by bit revealed as an exceptionally courageous and heroic person and the solution to her problems has already been aoutlined in the plot, that last action scene is absolutely obsolete in all respects. We already know who and how Regan is, shocking poor Jordan with an almost lethal job for the SWAT team is just the kind of cruel twist that ruins perfection. Without it it it would have been a clear 5 star favourite of mine :(
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the Author I had never read before. PTSD is very difficult for people and was represented very well in this story. I had to read the end chapter more than once.
It is so rare to read a story with a main character who is homeless and a veteran. I felt like Raven Cavaleu wrote a gripping portrayal of PTSD within Twist of Fate.
Jae's SRC character with disability, chronic illness, mental illness genre you don't usually read coming out later in life character rocks a power suit friends to lovers romance bisexual or pansexual character new to you author
First book I have read by Raven Cavaleu. I will definitely be reading more of her work in the future. She did an amazing job focusing on the difficulties that veterans have and protesting the emotions and struggles they face. With the amount of love and chemistry that the couple share to allow each of them to grow and heal. It's emotional and tender.
This book did not live up to the hyped of the reviews
Based on the countless reviews I read I had high expectations for this book needless to say it didn't deliver. I like the story the Author tried to tell but at the end of the day I felt brought in circles this book starts with Regan been homeless a very capable homeless citizen suffering from PTSD now I understand the concept of her trauma and losing her work and all of that but the way this author have delivered her character doesn't justify the beginning but anyway moving along whatever happened to that story line or even the woman she was feeding? That's totally forgotten no help no further helping those like her NOTHING! So what became of Helen too? The Author has Regan moving from place to place always becoming more superhero and perfect but the chapters which I have no problem with but I'm still not seeing any progress from her fears, from her terrors from her trauma no therapy we get the same story over and over every chapter just more worded than before. Jordan who is supposedly a lead character in this book as well I've barely learned anything about she's a high powered criminal attorney who doesn't seem to go to court has a reputation that's briefly stated in a stanza, suffers her own insecurities and in Sixteen chapters I still haven't learned where they stem from? Her parent just miraculously changed their minds after seeing her sad in a chapter and that's Jordan. When they finally got together because their is no growth there are constant insecurities there's so much depth that left out of this book but I guess it works for some people but I expected so much more
I'm giving this 4 stars because I really did care about the characters by the end of the book. The writing was fairly decent, although it could have done with a final once over, there were some typos and repetitions. I also thought Regan was a bit of a Mary Sue - she had a tragic, hard upbringing, was awesome at just about everything she did, graduating school without ever going to school, was a decorated Marine sniper (Medal of Honor amongst other things no less, which considering the only other woman to have one of those was a female doctor in the Civil War and it wasn't for valor, just service because that is what it was for back then); but she is broken, homeless, and doesn't know how to love since she's never really been shown how. You get the idea. I think I would have enjoyed the read more if she was a bit more relatable. I did roll my eyes a few times at her exploits. The last third of the book dragged a little until it picked up speed again heading towards the end. I felt the main reason for this was essentially another miscommunication of the same type between the main characters. The reader understands already, we didn't really need another dose. Still, this was a fun way to spend my Sunday afternoon, and the mains really were made for each other. If you enjoy a bildungsroman storyline, you will like this.
Plot: The book starts with Regan, a currently homeless person, stopping a bank robbery that Jordan happens to be present at. When the police arrive they mistakenly knock Regan out. Jordan, a lawyer, takes it upon herself to make sure Regan is released from custody and not charged.
Jordan convinces Regan to stay in her guest room in exchange for Regan cooking, cleaning, and doing general house improvement projects. Regan is a veteran and struggles with PTSD.
Most of the rest of this book is Regan having low self esteem due to her PTSD and Jordan having low self esteem due to feeling over weight. Even after they start dating they constantly make shitty assumptions about themselves and then push everyone else away. It got boring fast and I had to push to finish. After one last bit of contrived drama they live HEA.
Characterization: Regan has PTSD and just assumes that she is a burden on everyone in her life.
Jordan feels over weight and assumes that no one could ever possibly love her.
Writing: This was written in third person perspective. This was not well written. The writing was choppy and just rehashed the same boring insecurities over and over. The author accidentally used hansom when she meant handsome. At the start of the book Regan weirdly tells a complete stranger that she thinks “no one could possibly love” her… and i’m supposed to believe she stoic? The instant relationships in this book are so irritating. Regan goes to live with a random sweet neighbor lady for a month and then they are somehow already adopting each other. This whole book is forced and painful to slog through.
Wow! This was such an excellent read. The story just pulls you in from the first words written. Reagan was such a powerhouse but the heartbreaking life that she lived, brought tears to my eyes many times. That is the sign of good writing. Always trying to do the right thing, Reagan proceeds with her life being jobless and homeless. Needing to withdraw some funds from the bank, no address no ATM card, Reagan is on line and after a customer in front of her insults her, the woman behind her with the beautiful green eyes, gives her encouraging words. Needing a withdrawal slip, Reagan steps off the line as three masked robbers enter and all hells breaks loose. Reagan takes down one suspect and then uses his gun to shoot the others after watching one shoot an officer. But as she sat there trying to help the officer, she gets clocked and passes out. This is where the story sucks you in so far you can not put this down. It is tough reading but necessary. There are so many emotions and the learning of PTSD victims was an eye opener. Such a great story. I can see a continuation with Reagan and Jordan. Both are very strong characters as well as the supporting cast and with so much more to tell.
It’s not a terrible book. It has moments of fun and some enjoyable side characters.
The Main Character, Regan McKenzie is a complete Mary Sue. The best sniper in the world, she is a marines marine, tough as nails, leaps tall buildings with a single bound and damaged emotionally. The character is written as a ‘strong’ character, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But the characterization is too one dimensional.
I would say that overall the story is ok. A strong editor to push back on some of the more heavy handed bits would have been nice. Someone to balance the scales a bit and help out with the character building.
There are lots of sudden jerks in motivation. Lack of communication, and random, weird assumptions and actions. It makes it tougher to like the two main characters.
Honestly I knocked off 1 star for the Mary Sue aspect, and 2 stars for the final chapter. No spoilers, but if you get to it; you’ll probably see why.
For the first 2/3rds of the book, I couldn't hardly set it down. The last 1/3rd dragged a bit due to repetition - in story telling, reliving the main issue, and character patterns. Overall the story is well written and I loved all the characters. It did take some getting used to having both characters inner voices displayed at the same time instead of each getting their own chapter. I wish we had more insight into Jordans parents, which felt glazed over, and also Marci, whose vague mention left a confusing timeline. This book is pretty high in drama and conflict which is understandable considering the main topic, but the water works from everyone seemed over the top and got kind of annoying. Regardless, I would recommend this book.
3.5 stars This book gave me so many heart palpitations it’s impalpable! This book received 3.5 rather than ; stars because I felt those palpitations weren’t good natured as well as the fact that the book was drawn out a bit too much for my liking. The epilogue didn’t feel like a true resolution but a placation of the reader! The constant mentions of PTSD were exhausting quite frankly, yet somewhat appreciated as a future officer in the military. Jordan pissed me off with her leaving while she and Regan were conversing, but I get as Regan was quite frustrating too. Oh, by the way, Regan is who I aspire to be in the military and what I hope I am to my soldiers and their families! Anyway, okay book overall.
I really liked this story, and it kept me turning pages for sure. One thing i wish there had been more of is descriptive writing. I knew the two main characters' eye colors and that was it. No hair color, not sense of personal style, i gleaned a little about body types, but not enough to have a picture ein my head of what they looked like. I finally had to just make something up on my own and stick with it in order to really see as i was reading.
What an amazing story, full of twists and full of emotions.
Former Marine meets Jordan at a bank and after Reagan saves everyone's lives, she gets release into Jordan's custody. They get to know each other and fall in love at the same time.
We get to meet friends that became family and we see Reagan's journey dealing with her PTSD and trying to make a new life with Jordan and their new friends.
I highly recommend the book, it sucks you right from the beginning and can't seems to stop until the end.
This is my first review on KU even after reading well beyond 100 books in the last 2 months just to indicate how captivating this book was. I am a Marine veteran myself so naturally I had reservations about how this story would unfold. But I can’t begin to express how tastefully this was written. The emotions were so raw and heartbreaking regarding the struggle with PTSD but handled and expressed with great care. I would recommend this book to anyone who would listen.
Well that just tore my heart to bits. No spoilers! I started reading this morning my wife says I have hardly said a word. She asked why I was crying then shook her head and left me to it,she is great like that❤.You simply have to read this book. What a story, what and author. For all you ex military out there thank you for your service..I highly recommend that you do not have anything to do when you open the pages of this great book. It's a keeper.🌻
This is the first time reading this author and reading a military book. First a very good story, you can feel like your witnessing Regan nightmares and how she is dealing with them. Jordan is a tough ass attorney who doesn't want anything to do with being in a relationship. Tell they meet a friendship that turn to love and how they over come each of their battles to make a stronger relationship
This is a must-read in my opinion. Be prepared to cry, as well. Raven Cavalry truly shows the reader what living with PTSD and falling in love with someone who is learning to deal with their past and their traumas is really like. You can't help but be drawn to the two main characters and root for their love.
Raven Cavaleu wrote a compelling story about the effects of war on a soldier; a female soldier. The trauma of battle, capture, torture, and roiling emotions was effectively written. The patience it took to let Regan know she was love, accepted and worthy was heartbreaking. War is not glamorous and the soldiers who return are never the same. A very well written and loving story.
Twist of Fate for a title is very intriguing for a story. I’m still very stunned with how the story ended. How the PTSD is portrayed is almost like a character itself. The author handles how it affects everyone around Regan and how terrifying it can be for those who suffer with PTSD daily.
An amazing book, every single page took my breath away. So many emotions, so much loss and pain. But also so much love, a story that I couldn’t put down reading it. Wonderful book, strong characters and powerful dialogues. I will definitely read more books of the same author.
Regan, Jourdan, as you read this book, you will be on a rollercoaster of emotions. The characters are well developed and as their lives are entertwaind, you do not want to put it down. As you read, you will learn about forgiveness, love, fate, and family. Most of all friends, how important they are in our life.
I loved this story. I'm sometimes skeptical about stories about damaged heroes, which can be heavy and either do very dry or overly dramatic. Ms. Cavalleu has done a good job of showing the dark side as well as the healing and loving side of Regan's and Jordan's story.
Regan and Jordan met during a bank robbery when Regan’s military training kicked in and she intervened. Jordan, a lawyer, helps Regan when the police question her actions. Two women drawn together by fate. A realistic depiction of the problem of PTSD and veterans trying to return to a normal and productive life.
It was great and I loved the two main characters and the issues were very well written. My issue with how it ended, the scene immediately before the end seemed very unnecessary and abrupt, really pulled me out of tonight before the last few pages.
