An exciting underdog trilogy in a partial immersion

I enjoyed the underdog story of Esil, a young guy coming from the future’s equivalent of the slums who gets lucky. Then he gets lucky again. There is more to it than luck, he has nothing left to lose and winning is his only way out for good. He lost his parents when he was very young, but he was also injured and lost his memory.
Anything they left was sold off many years ago as he was not found after the accident and they had no other family.

He eventually discovers what happened to his parents and himself, after the game unlocks some of his early memories. The tournaments are the big challenge of the many worlds that make up Pangea Online. While not everyone can afford a chance to try their hand with some tournaments costing gold to enter, Esil has worked the data mines in game, just like everyone else from the Boxes. They have to spend 2 hours a day charging their homes with a bike. After hours working in the mines, synthetic foods await the poor as reward for the drudgery.

It’s a trap that keeps cycling the poor into low wage no end jobs that will never afford them any opportunities. Esil wants to change that, he knows he was unbelievably lucky and he wants to helps others. He pitches his ideas passionately and hopes for change for the less fortunate. He stays true to himself, he is a survivor doing what he needs to in order to advance and improve his life. But he has morals and while he may consider the low road, he strives to stand for himself and others against bullies because every story has one. He continues to come out on top of many situations but he is flexible enough to take quick advantage of changing factors to alter his plans on the fly. That flexibility and his determination push Esil and his protege, Dean, ever forward in their quests to better their own lives. Unlike others these tournaments may be the only change someone from the Boxes will ever get.
A great set of books!

Bk1 Death and Axes

This was fun. MC, Esil had just left the orphanage and joined the working class in the data mines, as one of the lowest of the low. But it was job giving him wages, food, and a place to live. The story is literally based on a Rags to Riches trope. With plenty of action, stat building, and monsters along the way.
With few naughty words I think it would be perfect for the young adult too! So give this litRPG a go. Get the audiobook because it would be even better for a couple of reasons, 1) you're hands free and 2) it's done by Soundbooth Theater Productions, their quality is always superb, and Justin Thomas James, Jeff Hays, and Laurie Catherine Winkle just can't be beat!

Bk 2 Magic and Mayhem
I don't think magic and mayhem quite lived up to Death and Axes... This book was all about Esil pretty much living the high life after winning the tournament and receiving his rewards. Seemingly he just wants to play Pangea on Line with his friends. And he's also been beta testing a brand new concept in the game for Pangea... to make it total immersion game. My only real concern wasn’t like there were any slow spots... but it just felt like book 1 wasn’t quite connected to Magic and Mayhem as well as you would've expected a trilogy to be!

Bk 3 Vials and Tribulations
Ohhhh 😯 yeah the continuity of Vials and Tribulations wraps up this wonderfully fun trilogy perfectly. I loved the fact that the makers of Pangea are moving ahead to combine the immersive piece of Pangea in with the entire system. And when Esil teams-up with Dean, I absodamnlutely knew that I was gonna be in for a great time. And like I expected I was completely mesmerized by this enthralling story! In actuality this whole story ARC was the best as SL Rolland and Soundbooth Theater sticks the landing 🥰!

This is a sweet, well-meaning middle-grade that plotwise hues towards a younger, kinder "Ready Player One." It features a stereotypically nice orphan who's down on his luck yet innately driven to help others and do the right thing. This is a fast, easy, nice read which is completely derivative but still fun.

That said, the writing isn't perfect and there's a lot of missed opportunities here for anything of substance. It's a bit repetitive and every obstacle is defeated too easily.

It's pretty sad to think that in a world where humanity could create literally anything, all we can think of are mere knock off game versions from every stereotypical genre. If there's truly nothing new under the sun why bother at all? The same could be said about this book, really.

The main character repeatedly lays out the iniquities of this society and bemoans them but when the (cute) spoiled little rich girl whose father is in the preeminent class of the society is like, "you can't change things why even bother," he immediately decides she's right and decides he's only going to help his own friends. He does nominally more than that but there's a revolution needed here, it seems like the book is going to take us there, but it doesn't. The main character continuously identifies major societal issues and then gains power and does nothing to make this messed up world better. Just waiting for those in power to care about the poor and vulnerable is a stupid, implausible, impossible, pathetic and dangerous conclusion to come to in this day and age.

An excellent series and a great box set! Each book is great, continuing to build the MC, his relationships, and the world in which he finds himself. S.L. Rowland does an excellent job incorporating stats and skills into the storyline and not just dumping 3 pages of stat sheets every 10 pages to pad the books. I would recommend any book written by S.L. Rowland and a trilogy box set is even better! Audio Version: The narration is great! Stats and skills flowed well and the narrators did an excellent job in each book.

DNF at 12 %.

The plot reminded me of "ready player one" but it seems to be intended for teenage readers.

The reckless and naive fan boy behaviour of the hero put me off. The story seems to try to sell the unique wisdom of creating characters with only one stat improved (for a ridiculous small amount of levels at least) to create OP characters.

I despised the idea that players not only may visit both primitive and high tech online worlds but can bring - for example - laser weapons back. Strangely, nobody but the protagonist seems to do this....

I really enjoyed Pangea Online by S. L. Rowland. The story of Esil hooked me right from the start watching him go from a struggling kid in the slums to someone with a real chance to rise in the game world was both exciting and inspiring. The mix of virtual action and real-world consequences kept the tension high, and I found myself rooting for him throughout the tournament. The world-building around Pangea felt immersive without being overwhelming, and the underdog theme made the book very relatable. A solid read for anyone who enjoys LitRPG with heart.

Awesome

Every good story line with complex yet relatable characters , the changing worlds aspect is nice and would be great In real life if the Mega gaming companies let you take your char between multiple genres, this is something I've discussed with friends in the past but this is the first time I've read it in book format. If a gaming company dominated the world this series is what I would expect.

This was a light-hearted read with plenty of action and exploration (virtual reality worlds). All three books had their own story arcs, but I'd recommend just binge reading them together.

The characters were the strong point, you'd root for their success and enjoy the various relationships that form (both real and virtual reality characters). Plot was good enough to keep you turning pages, but I'd have welcomed more depth.

Terrific

The author has greated an original realistic tale without all the subplots that litter so many litrpg stories, like all the best tales there is beginning, a middle and an end. The characters are a bit shallow but interesting, the locations are excellent and the story rattles along nicely.

An Unfocused Trilogy

So this trilogy was cool. This was my first time reading a LitRPG with a lot of the game modes explored in the series. However, the cohesive storyline of the trilogy was meh. The author literally pivots one major storyline between the second and third books, giving me severe whiplash. Still, I enjoyed the series.

Read book 1 a ways back, and liked it enough to tag the series to read more. Saw it ended up as a trilogy, and thought it may be nice to hit a litrpg story with a definite ending. Not bad - enjoyed it, not too many stat blocks, etc.

A compelling read from start to finish! If it weren't for the fact that it is so long, I wouldn't have put it down!

Hmmmmmmm

While a very decent story, I can’t help but think How close it is to the premise of Ready Player 1. Also, the flow of the storyline feels a bit forced.

The series was fantastic! The future was bleak and promising at the same time. Sometimes, one person can make a difference and bring different areas of people together.
