This is likely the last of these books I will read. I really tried (especially since a friend bought them for me).

The characters for the most part are not likable, or interesting. The "mystery" about the MCs past is unimportant. Each book is basically the same with the location and spell names changed to make it "different." There is no real progression and after 9 books he is still adding students to his harem. Like the plot formula, that got old in book 2.

I suspect once this series is finished, there will be enough actual plot to make one book once the repetitive fluff is taken out.

Maybe the most formulaic of these books yet which makes it utterly predictable. I keep reading these books for the premise as I like what it is trying to do, but every book is really starting to disappoint me with the execution. Always Cole and his coven will go up against yet another overwhelming threat and as always will overcome it because it turns out Cole is just that strong and he brute forces his way out of every situation. There’s no cleverness, no twists and no turns. There’s just a straight line from point A to B.

Add on top of that adult scenes that I am starting to think might actually be copy and pasted from each other as they are all so similar that its impossible to tell them apart, and this book no longer has much going for it.

Finally there is the climax of what has been a 3 book arc and that left me wanting again as

There is one big reveal at the end of the end of the novel, but if you’re anything like me you’re not going to be surprised as the author has been anything but subtle with his foreshadowing for this one.

Once again I go back to what I said earlier about the fact that I read these books for the premise. I like the concept of the most powerful witch in existence being the only male witch in existence and him forming a coven of witches to fight as one of the bad guys. There’s a lot there that’s unique and has a lot of promise, but the books are starting to get to the point where I am not sure I want to keep reading. Each book is a little more bland than the last because as the series keeps dipping into the same bag of tricks over and over again, and I am less and less interested with each repetition.

A Climactic Battle and a Formula Tested: Scholomance 9 Reaches a Tipping Point

For dedicated readers of Logan Jacobs's Scholomance series, the ninth installment is where the rubber meets the road—or, more fittingly, where dark magic meets the gates of heaven. This book concludes the three-part arc against the elder goddess Samara, finally delivering the promised, epic showdown as Cole and his coven storm her celestial domain to force her submission. It’s a make-or-break moment for the series: a book packed with climactic action and a significant lore reveal that will satisfy core fans, but one that also stretches its well-worn formula to a breaking point for others. I’m giving it a shaky 3 out of 5 stars.

Key Themes

Conquest and Absolute Dominance: The core drive of the series reaches its zenith here. The conflict is no longer about survival or schoolyard politics; it’s about a mortal witch violently imposing his will on a divine being. The book explores this through the entirety of Cole's crusade into the "elder heavens," framing his victory not just in battle, but in the total subjugation of Samara’s body, mind, and faith.

The Weight of Legacy and Identity: A major theme comes to a head with a long-teased revelation about Cole’s true nature. The story grapples with the question of whether power is earned or inherited, using this late-game twist to reframe his entire journey and immense abilities, for better or worse.

The Strain of a Growing Harem: An unintentional but palpable theme is the narrative challenge of an ever-expanding cast. With a coven now so large it resembles a small army, meaningful interaction between Cole and individual members becomes scarce. As one reviewer put it, the characters often feel like "props" in Cole’s story rather than developed partners.

Character Analysis

Cole: Our overpowered protagonist remains frustratingly static. He faces a goddess yet undergoes no real introspection or growth. His solution to every problem, as critics note, is to be "just that strong" and "brute force his way" through. The book’s final revelation about his origins feels less like character development and more like an assigned pedigree to justify his power.

The Coven: The women continue to be the series' biggest missed opportunity. They are powerful and loyal, but with so many in the mix, they largely function as a collective magical battery and harem. Promised developments, like the long-building tension with Professor Vanessa, continue to be deferred, leaving character arcs feeling stagnant.

Samara: As the primary antagonist for three books, her defeat is the central event. However, the confrontation can feel predetermined, with the journey to her throne often cited as more engaging than the final psychological or emotional payoff.

Writing Style & Pacing
Jacobs’s prose is, as always, functional and propulsive, prioritizing fast-paced action and steamy scenes. The pacing in the first half is a slog, filled with what many readers call obvious "filler"—repetitive travel sequences, formulaic monster encounters, and the series’ infamous, lengthy adult scenes that some admit to skipping entirely. However, once the assault on Samara’s domain kicks off, the book finds its rhythm, delivering the large-scale magical battles and "pulse-pounding" action that fans crave.

What I Liked/Disliked
Liked:

The climax of the Samara arc provides a real sense of closure and features some of the series’ best large-scale battle sequences.

The lore reveal at the end, while heavy-handed, fundamentally changes the stakes and will dictate the direction of the remaining books.

For series loyalists, it delivers the specific blend of dark fantasy, power trips, and "sexy times" they signed up for.

Disliked:

Relentless Predictability: The plot is a "straight line from point A to B" with no clever twists. Victories feel earned by fiat, not ingenuity.

The Formula Fatigue is Real: The copy-paste feel of intimate scenes and the repetitive "gather power, fight, conquer" cycle have worn thin over nine books.

Shallow Payoff: After a three-book buildup, the resolution with Samara can feel abrupt and thematically hollow, prioritizing conquest over meaningful conflict.

Conclusion & Recommendation
Scholomance 9 is a divisive entry that perfectly encapsulates the series’ appeal and its flaws. It’s a crucial read for plot progression but a frustrating experience for anyone seeking depth.

Final Verdict: Read this only if you are already invested in Cole’s saga and need to see the Samara arc conclude. The action-packed climax and major reveal make it necessary for completists. Do not start the series here, and if you’ve found the last few books to be repetitive slogs, this might be your logical DNF point. It’s the ultimate popcorn read for fans of uncomplicated power fantasy, but the magic is showing serious signs of fading.

As predicted?

Only still reading this series to see where it ends up. Everything is always just too perfect for cole. I mean they just happened to find everything they need for an ancient potion in a matter of moments, not once, but twice. I was shocked when Cole actually took a hit for once, but it still didn't really do anything to him. I don't even read the sex parts since book 2, as they are just excessive. Thankfully its easy to skip since its an entire chapter. I have also started skimming through the whole letting in the dark power and the pain, as they are pretty much just filler to make the book longer. And 3books for one antagonist is too much, since she wasn't even the final boss.

This might be the best one yet.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Much like the rest of this series, once I started reading it was difficult to stop. The final and third artifact is within Cole's and his lady's grasp as their battle with Samara looms before them. Things grow more and more challenging with every inch. And, a secret is revealed that will change everything. I look forward reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.

Pulse pounding brilliance!

Another thrilling and exciting entry in the Scholomance series, and the best one yet!
With Cole searching for the final relic and his contribution with Samara looming around the corner, I couldn't put this book down until I'd finished it!
And yet again, another hot and sexy end to a fantastic book, and a twist revelation that has my already eager for the next book!

So evil and yet so so good.

This series just keeps getting better. Lots of action as Cole and his coven of kick-ass wicca take on the Elder Goddess Samara. Lots of really great action scenes really help sell the final battle between them. A great ending and an awesome segway to the next installment in this series.

Great series

I enjoy this series quite a bit, i think there is too many sex scenes, and when i do skim over them they seem the same as the last 5 but i can skip those parts, over all good plot and i liked it and thats all that matters.

I like some of Logan Jacob's other books, so I gave this series a try - it's a mystical school harem book, which I'm fine with. The pacing is good, the writing is fine, the sex is palatable, the developments are predictable but I'm into it. Let's see where he takes me.
