This book should be marketed as Christian Fiction. The jacket blurb does not accurately portray the novel. I found it a bit tedious to read. Frustration with the two primary characters inability to communicate and then the heavy influence of Christianity was a turn off for me.

This book would make a terrific Hallmark Christmas Movie.

Kendall Green is a Los Angeles-based interior designer with a reputation for sourcing quality antiques to place in the buildings she renovates. When rising LA rents place her business at risk, she finds a possible solution in her letterbox. Her unknown grandmother died, and she is the sole beneficiary. The only catch is that she needs to claim the inheritance in the next two weeks, which means an unplanned trip to the tiny town of Jasper Lake, Colorado.

Gabe Brandt is the young mayor of Jasper Lake, and he wants to bring new life to the town. That means persuading Kendall not to sell her houses to a property developer who wants to turn the town into an upscale resort.

Kendall is obsessed with finding the origin (provenance) of every antique she buys, but she knows nothing of her own background beyond being abandoned by her mother when she was five and raised in foster care. Going through her grandmother’s house could be her opportunity to find her own provenance.

This was a skilful melding of Kendall’s outward and inward journeys. Meanwhile, there is also the growing attraction between Kendall and Gabe. But Gabe (as we come to see) is a Christian whose faith has meaning in his everyday life. Ironically, that faith is largely because of Kendall’s grandmother.

Kendall is not a person of faith. On particular foster home showed her the negatives of faith, and she has never been interested enough to search out the truth for herself … until now. Provenance gives Kendall a clear faith journey, and it’s refreshing to see a Christian novel where one of the main characters has a serious and believable journey to trusting in Jesus.

As such, Provenance is one of the strongest Christian romances I’ve read in a while. It does an excellent job of melding the internal and external plots, and of integrating Christianity in a real way—recognising the strengths and weaknesses of the faith and the followers.

Recommended for Christian fiction and romance fans.

A contemporary story full of small town charm, with a bit of mystery, faith, and a clean romance. Two characters brought together abruptly by a surprise inheritance, try to figure out how to save a historic property and preserve a small Colorado mountain town.

Provenance is defined by the dictionary as "a place or source of origin"; from the Latin, "to come forth". What a perfect title for this book featuring a woman who is given a chance to delve into a forgotten, painful childhood. It's a touching story when it all plays out, with a mystery or two slowly revealed, and one of redemption in the end.

The faith struggles felt realistic, especially in Kendall's character. She starts from a place of mistrust, pain and doubt based on experiences of abandonment and false assumptions, and grows into a person with hope springing up from truth and love. I liked Gabe a lot, and his sincere desire to do what is best for Kendall and the town. He wrestles a lot with his own past, and seems to grow in faith when he seeks God's will in his life. I loved his grandfather who baked and ran the B and B, and other characters who pop in and out of the town coffee shop. Some sensitive issues are touched on, but handled carefully.

Fans of contemporary Christian romances with flawed characters will likely enjoy this story. It would make a lovely Hallmark movie.

I really, really liked this book! I loved the title, but had no idea what it meant. I thought maybe something to do with France but then I looked it up. And it is the perfect title, Provenance from the French provenir ‘to come from’ – as an example ‘tracing the provenance’. And this whole book was about tracing these characters’ pasts through buildings, letters and other means.
It was a fascinating book. I love stories that I can’t figure out where they are going and this one certainly qualified on that. The setting of the book was perfect, few books are set in winter with snow and extreme cold. And the characters had unique occupations, especially Kendall.
I loved the author’s Saturday Night Supper Club series and this book felt similar (without as much food though). I just love the way she writes!
I found this a great read and would recommend it highly!
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this ebook. The opinions are entirely my own.

This book had as many layers as a trifle. I loved and appreciated all the research the author went through to authentically convey the nuances of both the hero and heroine’s jobs. The tragic backstory of the heroine is a real heart-wrencher and the things she learns, both of her history and life lessons, make me want to give her younger self a long hug. Carla Laureano is a master storyteller and she weaves her magic within these pages.

'Sometimes no matter how hard you wished for something, you still came up short.'

I just this minute read the last word of this book. I really enjoy Carla Laureano's wok and have reread several more than once. So I am always excited to see she has a new book coming out. She writes with a depth that I truly enjoy. She doesn't just craft characters and throw them on a page. No, she delves into their lives and reveals their deepest emotions, their longings and heartbreaks.

'If you didn't let anyone in, you couldn't be hurt by rejection. You couldn't be disappointed. It was easier to be alone by your own choice than to have someone make that choice for you.'

The characters of Gabe and Kendall are incredibly well formed here and I very much was all in learning their back stories and what brought them to this point in their lives. This was a long story, but never felt forced or long. It moved deeply and the word I believe I'd use is 'fulfilling'. It was heart-satisfying.

Laureano shows us that there are never any coincidences with God. He is there, waiting patiently, loving His creation. The spiritual thread of this story is so powerful-so much so that I found myself smiling numerous times at how the author played it out. And, even though this book has a very strong story line and wonderful characters, God is the true hero of this story. Psalm 139;16 is one verse that went through my mind during the reading. This one is a winner in every way. I felt so good reading it! Well done!

My thanks to Tyndale House for a copy of this book via Net Galley. I was not expected to leave a positive review and the opinion here is my own.

BOOK REVIEW

Provenance
by Carla Laureano

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book had so much potential but ultimately fell just short for me.

What I loved about this book:
* The cover: Gorgeous!! 😍

* Setting: This story takes place in a mountain town in Colorado! I absolutely the mountains and I wish I could live in this one!

* Author's writing: I appreciated that this author wrote 'up' to readers and not 'down' to them. The author didn't over-explaining the vibe (this story is set in a mountain town but the author wrote in such a way that didn't assume readers knew nothing nor everything about mountains), she left space for nuance (I hate it when authors spell out e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, especially when it comes to emotions and inner thoughts) and she had a GREAT use of vocabulary (nothing dull or repetitive about her writing style and word choices!)

Things I didn't love:
* The faith part of the story was way too preachy and heavy-handed and it was misplaced. I feel like it could have been woven in throughout the story in a much more accessible, loving and grace-filled way. As it was this one snuck in so abruptly and intensely that even as a Christian, it offended me. And don't even get me started on the 'missionary dating' debacle.....🤦🏻‍♀️

* This story comes from the perspective of a woman who grew up in foster care, not knowing her past or if she had a past. I'm big on backstory and context and I felt the author left out a bunch of both, especially for such a heavy topic!

* The story was a very slow burn and then all of a sudden it had super abrupt ending!? A little too easy and tidy.

Provenance was just as good as I expected it to be! After reading the MacDonald Family Trilogy last year, I was eager to pick up this new release from Carla Laureano and it did not disappoint.

I loved the characters and setting. The town sounds so beautiful and it was fun to read about. Gabriel was a great character, as was Kendall. I liked how the characters seemed realistic and their emotions/actions genuine. The romance was nice and I liked the ending.

All in all, Provenance was a wonderful read. It is somewhat of a longer book, but I enjoyed that as the story didn't seem rushed and was a deeper read. I recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

I always enjoy the work of Carla Laureano. I adored her The Supper Club series (food - yum!) and now she has created another fantastic Christian contemporary romance. Provenance is set in a small (very cold) Colorado town. The snow storms and mountainous setting are the perfect backdrop to this story about discovering your past and falling in love.

When Kendall Green learns that she is the beneficiary of a grandmother she never knew, only desperation for some cash to keep her interior design business and home in California afloat, prompts her to respond. She’s not sure she wants anything from the grandmother who let her grow up in foster care, moving from home to home and when Kendall learns that her inheritance are 5 historic Victorian homes, she is half devastated and half delighted. She is ready to sell to the highest bidder when the young mayor of the town, delightfully handsome Gabriel Brandt, asks her to consider another option to help save the town’s history and community from circling developers. Staying gives Kendall the chance to learn the truth about her mother, her grandmother and the reason she was abandoned when she was a child, but it also means growing closer to Gabriel, and with her life in California, Kendall’s not sure that’s a risk she should take.

Small town setting. Tick
Charming and handsome love interest. Tick
Strong, career determined main character. Tick.

Provenance has everything I enjoy in a good contemporary romance. I do love a bit of family drama and mystery and Kendall has a lot to uncover about the events of her past. There were a few twists, which made the mystery of it exciting.

Cold snowy weather makes the perfect excuse for cuddling, right? And Kendal and Gabriel find themselves battling the cold together. Both are trying to prove themselves. Both care about community and the history of towns and buildings. As they start to work together, they learn they have a lot in common and they have some pretty great chemistry. Gabriel is a Christian and Kendal is hurt and confused when he tells her they can’t have a relationship when she doesn’t share his faith. Kendal’s own faith journey starts with good examples of loving and caring people, addressing the hurt from her past and some deep questions. The timing of Kendal and Gabriel’s relationship also helps her to take things at her own pace, and I liked that things were not rushed.

Provenance is a great Christian contemporary romance, perfect for reading while snuggled up by a fire.

Interior stylist Kendall Green is drawn to Jasper Lake by a promising inheritance from a grandmother she never knew. In Jasper Lake she meets Gabriel Brandt the young mayor, bent on turning the town with an aging population around. Will Kendall find the answers to the questions surrounding her provenance?

A moving read, with well developed characters in a inviting small mountain community. Engaging read with well built characters that felt honest, I liked learning along with Kendall more about her origins and the circumstances that brought her to where she is now. Gabe is a natural leader, with people skills and a core of integrity, and I liked that he stood firm on his beliefs.

Overall, a pleasant small town romance, that tackles faith, love, and family in a moving and engaging way, The characters were likable, and I loved getting to know the residents of Jasper Lake. Strong themes of faith, and new friendships.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Carla Laureano moves from the city to the Colorado mountains in Provenance with a story that drew me and held me captive until the end.

Kendall’s career drives her, but her past keeps her from thriving in other areas of her life. When she inherits five homes in small-town Colorado, Kendall sees it as the way to save her business. But there is so much more than she expected in Jasper Lake. Determined to save the town, Gabe’s mission is to sway Kendall from selling the homes and the land.

This beautiful story of discovering God’s enduring love, home, and family is beautifully written against stunning settings. Laureano once again pens a captivating masterpiece that weaves romance, a little mystery, and truth throughout.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a few years now. I finally picked it up and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the 2 main protagonists in the story and I loved the foster care trope in the story. Lost family is a great storyline and this book done it well. The romance was excellent as well. I gave the book 4.5 stars. I definitely would recommend this book. The faith in this book was excellent as well. I can’t wait to read more from this author!!!!

Themes of home, belonging and new beginnings are explored in Carla Laureano's latest novel. Beautiful settings. Multi-layered, complex characterizations. Sweet, clean romance and small town charm. Abandoned as a small child and growing up in foster care, Kendall Green is an outwardly successful interior designer plagued by deep emotional wounds and questions regarding her past. Readers will journey alongside her in a quest to uncover the truth.

Carla Laureano, whether she's creating fantasy worlds or contemporary romance worlds, never fails to captivate my heart, mind, and soul with her beautiful words, setting, and characters. This newest novel brings us back to Colorado, to a little dying town of Jasper Lake where past and present collide for both Kendall and Gabe as they work together to save her inheritance and his town. Their past is as broken as it gets and both are fearful of rejection and abandonment. But working together slowly allows them to get past that fear and to recognize and accept the love extended by those around them, especially by their family. There is great banter and dialogue and the characters are witty and pure fun, even in the midst of their battles. I loved that there is a bit of mystery and intrigue regarding Kendall's family and how she came to inherit the houses in town. Gabe's quirky, corny, and endearing sense of humor is quite delightful and his town of Jasper Lake is easy to fall in love with.

If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will totally love this book. Kudos to Carla Laureano!

What a moving story! It took me a little while to get going on this one, but that seems to be normal these days with longer novels. I immediately liked Kendall. She's complex and filled with complicated and mostly erroneous beliefs, which made her so very relatable. And while Gabe has issues of his own, he's much further along in his process of healing and figuring himself out. I love a good strong, steady hero who isn't overbearing yet shows up to provide what the heroine needs most (even if it's not what she wants). They balance each other throughout the story as Kendall discovers the truth of her provenance and how deeply she loved she has always been.

This book feels a little more overtly spiritual than some of Ms. Laureano's recent releases, and I loved that. It came through naturally and powerfully as a vital part of Kendall's discovery process. There could be no separating her spiritual journey from her personal one, and the entanglement of her journeys plus her feelings for Gabe makes this book beautiful.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for offering me an advance copy to read. All opinions expressed are my own and freely given without expectation or incentive.

Such a great book!!
After inheriting a sizable amount of property in the mountain town of Jasper Lake, Colorado, Southern Californian and interior designer Kendall Green embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of her past and discover where she really belongs.
I enjoyed the setting of this novel (cold and snow, which makes this a perfect Fall/Winter read) as well as the characters and the sweet love story. But my favorite part was the theme of home/belonging. “Home” can mean so many different things, but the way the author handles the topic, and where Kendall finally finds her place, can resonate with many of us.
This would be perfect for fans of Becky Wade, Courtney Walsh, and other inspirational romance authors. I’d also recommend it for fans of books that focus on “found family” and a small town community feel.
I really loved this one.
Thank you Netgalley and Tyndale House Publishers for the advanced reader copy. It was a privilege to read this!
P.s. Also check out the Saturday Supper Club series by the same author!

As someone who finds HGTV's home reno shows a great distraction from running at the gym, when I heard the setting of this book (a young interior designer finds out she has inherited a row of Victorian houses in a small town in Colorado), it sounded interesting. Turns out it isn't really about redoing the homes, it is Christian fiction and a romance, neither of which are my usual genres. But, having gotten the book out of the library, I thought I'd give it a shot anyway, and I enjoyed it. The Christian fiction aspect wasn't too "overwhelming", except maybe closer to the end. The romance is a pretty typical overall formula: young designer heads to Colorado to claim her inheritance, only to discover that the fate of the town hinges on what she decides to do with the houses. She and the handsome, young, single mayor fall for each other while she spends time in the town deciding what to do with her legacy but of course there is an obstacle to try to overcome to be together.

Such a fun redemption story set in the high altitude of Colorado.

Kendall Green is an interior designer with a specialty in historic preservation who is in high demand for her work. However, most people don’t know her past; she was abandoned in Denver as a little girl and shuffled through the foster care system. Once she aged out of the system, she chose a path and never looked back. Returning from a business trip in Europe, she opens a letter addressed from the town of Jasper Lake, Colorado. Her grandmother passed away and she has been named the sole heir of her property. Surprised that she had a family member who knew who she was, yet overjoyed this could be just what she needs to finally purchase her Southern California property and take her business to the next level.

Upon arrival in Jasper Lake, Kendall meets young mayor Gabe Brandt. She discovers that the town is close to ruin due to previous flooding disasters and a developer wants to build a new resort but needs her property for the lake front access. Gabe wants to try to save the town without the resort and has tried multiple ways, but nothing has worked. He hopes that he can sway Kendall to keep the property so that the resort plans cannot move forward. However, she has no interest in doing that until she sees the five historic houses on the lot. Will Gabe be able to convince Kendall to help save the town? Can Kendall stomach the demolition of such unique houses even if it saves her business?

There is nothing quite like a fun, contemporary romance with lots of friction between the two main characters and even more tension surrounding them. Throw in a redemption story aspect and you’ve got yourself a signature Carla Laureano novel. I loved going back to Colorado in this series with a nod to the Solid Grounds Coffee Company (be sure to give a shout out when you spot it). I was kind of hoping for Brunch at Bittersweet Café one day, but maybe it will show up in the future.

Kendall was a difficult character to get to know. She shuts everyone out (even the reader at times) with her feelings because she has been hurt so badly in the past. She has no memory of what happened and has felt abandoned all her life. Interestingly enough, she finds it easier to confide in Gabe about her past and tells him more than anyone else she has met. I loved seeing her transformation throughout the story and discovering the power of being an adopted child of God.

Gabe is a fixer and wants to have a hand in solving every problem he encounters. He has difficulty sitting back and letting other people figure things out, even God. So, to see him become humble in this book was really intriguing. I loved the supporting characters and hope that there might be a couple future installments with their stories (fingers crossed!)

The romance wasn’t forced in the story, and frankly I got a little worried if it was even going to play out, but I think readers will be quite satisfied with the conclusion!

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

I received a complimentary eARC of the novel through NetGalley and Tyndale House, in exchange for an honest review.
What I Liked

Gabe, who Kendall meets shortly after coming to town, is a Christian, and I really like that Gabe’s faith plays an important role in the plot, as well as in his day-to-day decisions and relationships.
Thematically, I liked the discussion of spiritual adoption, paired with earthly adoption. For me, this provided fresh insight into the Scripture on adoption. Plus, the commentary on forgiveness is spot on.
Laureano has a knack for concisely illustrating and articulating common human experiences.
The novel is powerful! Laureano crafts a believable backstory for Kendall, and her characterization is also believable. As a result, I has some definite tear-jerker experiences as I walked with Kendall on her journey.
I enjoyed the cast of characters and their relationships, within the small town. For example, most of the townsfolk stop at the coffee shop every morning to start their day and Gabe’s grandpa bakes desserts and treats for the local diner, as well as the cafe. And, the market doubles as a pizza parlor. (Okay, maybe I actually liked the small town food. Is that a thing?)
The mystery element was well-executed. Kendall begins the story knowing close to nothing about her family of origin, and spends the novel learning her own story. I would have liked to have solved the mystery even earlier, but I think that’s a good thing, in the sense that it unraveled over time.
In terms of the romance, I appreciated that the plot wasn’t as straightforward as romances often are. For example, both characters acknowledge that they have not known each other very long. There was another component I really liked, but I don’t want to spoil anything.
Content Concerns

There is one somewhat intense/ graphic kissing scene. However, part of the graphicness is due to Kendall wondering if it will “lead” anywhere.
There are references to a homosexual character, as well as a comment (made by a non-Christian) to the effect that the character previously repressed his “true” identity.
Overall Impression

This is one of those books that I think I would recommend by comparison. As far as Christian books go, it was just a little more graphic than I’d have liked (I don’t think most people would take issue with it)—but it makes sense due to the character’s perspective. With that said, it’s not my first choice as a Christian book, but I would feel very comfortable recommending this title over a non-Christian book. And, I think it can definitely appeal to non-Christian readers. (I will add a quick note that I don’t agree with 100% of the ideas presented).

There's something ironic (and also blissful) about reading a book during summertime that involves snow. :D I might have devoured this read amidst a record-setting Pacific Northwest heatwave ... and loved the mental respite.

Readers of Laureano's other works (notably The Solid Grounds Coffee Company) will enjoy the occasional Easter-egg reference here; I love it when authors do that!

Also similar to her other works, Laureano isn't afraid to sidle up to hot-button issues, as well as point readers back to Christ above all. I truly enjoyed this thought-provoking read about provenance in every sense, from interior design and home restoration to one's own personal life and family history. The small-town Colorado setting was endearing not just for snow in my heat-infused world, but also for its residents' love and care for each other ... where "everyone knows your name" (with all the perks and foibles that come with it). An excellent read.

DNF. // I generally like Carla Laureano's books. As a friend once described her: it's inspirational romance that doesn't make me roll my eyes.

But I had to stop reading Provenance at this line: "She had no problem putting away a massive amount of barbeque and dessert in front of him, which he found inexplicably sexy -- he couldn't stand when he took a woman out and she only ate a salad, as if he were weighing and judging her food intake."

(Which, he is..........)

Authors everywhere, STOP using this tired, sexist, damaging stereotype/trope. STOP telling your readers that men are only attracted to women who eat a lot of food/have big appetites. STOP telling your readers that if they're a woman who likes to get a salad at a restaurant, her man won't find her sexy. STOP IT.

This stereotype is so early two thousands. It wasn't okay to send people this message then, and it's definitely not okay to send them this message now -- twenty years later.

I know this line doesn't represent the whole book. And maybe you shouldn't judge a book by its one line. I'm being honest that I did not finish the book. But I'm writing this review because I'm so tired of this message (a woman's attractiveness being tied to and judged based on what she eats) STILL pervading culture. I'm tired.

Carla Laureano returns once again with her classic, captivating style. Provenance — which is perfectly titled in every way — delivers an enthralling read complete with compelling characters, a gripping storyline, and a mesmerizing backdrop. The setting came to life with clear, vivid images that, even now, I can instantly see though I’ve read several other novels since finishing this one.

I loved the historical angle and its link to every aspect of the book: Kendall’s background, her job, the properties she inherited, etc. Laureano crafted a thread that ran through, and tied, everything together perfectly. This and my need to know Kendall’s story had me devouring pages.

Gabe, sadly, wasn’t my jam. Not wanting to give too much away, while I wasn’t a fan of him all along, I can accept we all make mistakes. However, the way he acted once everything came to the light compounded his mistakes rather than redeem him. In spite of him, the quest to uncover the history of both Jasper Lake and Kendall’s family kept me riveted, and consequently I would recommend Provenance to readers of women’s fiction.

#BookReview: PROVENANCE by Carla Laureano

Wikipedia defines provenance as the chronology of the ownership, custody or location of a historical object. Kendall was in her element as she perused the houses and antique pieces found from her surprising inheritance.

Provenance is a sweet, slow burn story of healing and forgiveness. Kendall’s perspective in life was challenged as she uncovered the mystery of her adoption and learned the truth about her heritage. It didn’t hurt that love bloomed in the process with the small town’s mayor. Their heartwarming love story and their support for each other was a delight to read. I was moved by the faith elements weaved in the story as well. It was essential for both of them but was not preachy. Gabe was definitely the man for Kendall.

If you enjoy clean, small town romance with lots of snow, coffee and pastries, this one’s for you. 4.5 stars

Carla Laureano has officially been added to my list of authors who just "get" the way I think. :) As a Colorado girl, I love reading about familiar places and settings. There was a point in the book where it felt like a natural break, but didn't end there. As a reader, I was a little unnerved, wondering, "Why am I still here? What else is there to discover?" Then, it went to beautiful, beautiful places!

One of my all-time favorite scenes in the book was a frank discussion, "You're not in love with this girl. You've only known her for a week." THANK YOU!!!!!
