Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.

All I need from you is an email address to send them to. Here's the link you need - https://mailchi.mp/fd47a6eb4ae5/patri...

When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.

Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Lancashire Hotpot Peril by Steve Higgs is the 9th book in the Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers mystery series. Retired police detective Albert Smith and his”assistance dog” Rex Harrison are visiting Lancashire on their culinary tour to taste their famous award winning hotpot but find that a television chef has been murdered at the restaurant. I love this series and especially Rex who seems to always be ahead of his humans. A very entertaining mystery with Rex providing plenty of laughs as always.

More of the same in this book. The attempted “mentoring” of the not so distinguished policeman was pretty funny and added to the story. The plot line got a little complicated but all worked out in the end.

Who would ever think of cooking as dangerous?

Our main characters, Albert Smith and his German Shepherd dog Rex Harrison certainly didn't think it would be. After all, it's only food.

So, expecting a tasty cooked meal they ventured to Lancashire from where Lancashire Hotpot takes its name.

Obviously things rarely go according to plan, and although Albert was thinking longingly of mouth watering Lancashire Hotpot; one of his late wife's spécialité de la maison, and it had been some time since he had last eaten it; he was not destined to get to taste any on this culinary tour of the British Isles which he and Rex had embarked upon. It seemed that on the very day that they arrived, that a man had suddenly dropped dead at the very restaurant that Albert was hoping to eat at!

The dead man; a famous chef called Chris Caan, had died on the day he was supposed to be filming a program at the very restaurant he sadly died in.

Albert, initially saddened at the mans death and the closing of the restaurant he was hoping to eat at, decided to try to help the Lancashire police force to solve the case quickly enough that the restaurant could reopen, therefore allowing him to get some of the famous hotpot.

However, things tended to get complicated when Albert and Rex get involved. Of course, Rex considered himself as the better sleuth as he had the better nose for things, but he was unable to explain his findings to his owner, and so was forced to wait till Albert figured things out for himself.
Much hilarity therefore ensues as Rex and Albert set out to do what Albert felt the local police were failing to do. Find the guilty party, promptly. And Albert being a retired senior police detective could not resist the challenge!

Albert and Rex are in Clitheroe to taste the award winning Hotpot created by Danny Parsons when a celebrity chef is murdered by the very dish he wishes to try and Danny is suspected of murder!!The story reveals Chris, the celebrity chef, and Danny went to catering college together along with another friend called Jack. Jack called on Chris to visit his restaurant in the hope that he would give a glowing review to help rebuild his business ,instead though Chris tore his establishment to shreds causing Jack to lose everything , Jack finds out Chris is in town to do a show and tries to get revenge but others have beaten him to it!!! Rex causes quite a few laughs too as he cannot get his human to understand him, another great story from Steve Higgs. 5 stars really do not do him any justice.

Read books in order!
I just love this series, Albert and Rex are quite the pair, Albert is getting better at reading Rex's clues.
Rex as usual cant wait for his partner Albert to catch up, why dont humans have a better sense of smell?
Rex is sure that if humans had a better sense of smell, they would solve the crime much sooner. Rex did get to play his favorite game of chase and "bite", I always get a kick of his never ending "Taking a Bite out of- the bum side- Crime. This was a very twisted, too many suspects with false starts, twisted motives, hidden past resentments, and surprise ending. Another must read.

In this latest installment of the adventures of Albert and Rex, they barely get into town when they run into their latest dead body. And, of course, they can't stay out of it. Although Rex's main concern is finding the food that he thinks people are hiding. It's a who-done-it with multiple suspects, a bumbling cop and a very smart dog. And don't forget the recipe at the end of the book. I didn't even know what a hotpot was, but now thinking very seriously about trying the recipe. It's good, clean fun. You can't go wrong with this one.

Adventures galore

The newest adventure of Albert and Rex did not disappoint me. The crime solving duo is growing better able to work out what the other partner has on his mind. Hard to do, since one talks and the other barks.
Albert's adult children appear on and off to bring in an official bit of police work. The family touch is nice, as Albert is wandering around England with just his dog for company.
Albert missed his famous dinner of Hot Pot at this stop on his travels, but stirred up his own hodge podge of wacky villains in the latest murder.

This was a fun series. Traveling around England with his German Shepherd police dog, retired police detective, Albert Smith, finds adventure in every city. Spiced with a bit of danger, he's getting on the local detectives' nerves - woo hoo! There's a backstory that won't be solved until the last book which also makes this an interesting read. The reader knows the outline while Albert and Rex the dog can only guess.
I am enjoying another series by Steve Higgs - I think he is a very talented author!

Retired Chief Detective Albert Smith and his ex-canine officer Rex Harrison continue their culinary tour of Great Britain when they travel to Dundee, Scotland to sample the famous Dundee cake. Before they even disembark from the train they’re caught up in another murder investigation with some very surprising plot twists. Steve Higgs series of books are all addicting, and Albert and Rex’s adventures are no exception. There are many LOL moments. All Higgs books are bing worthy! Very enjoyable!

What fun!

As usual, Albert and Rex lead us all on a merry chase in another British town with a claim to fame for a special food item. The clever detectives work together to solve a new mystery in each new location. The hilarity that ensues will keep you laughing along with being amazed at the sometimes far fetched conclusion to each new case. This one was a favorite. Try it, you'll love it!

Yummy - again

I don't know who I love more, Albert or Rex. Rex is definitely funnier. Their adventures are so much fun to read. I always try to figure out whodunnit, and I'm always surprised at the ending. This story, with the constable assistant, was delightful. He added something the other Albert and Rex stories didn't have. Long live Albert and Rex and may they scour the continent the way they're doing England.

Albert wants a hotpot! Unfortunately if he wants one before leaving Lancaster,  he's going to have to solve another murder since the local police aren't doing a very good job of that.
Rex Harrison is quite comical in this book as well. Quite the character, Rex brings humor to the stories with his keen dog wit.
Higgs has another hit on his hands and we all benefit!

Albert and Rex are continuing their culinary tour of the UK. Of course, there’s bound to be a crime to prevent or delay Albert’s pursuit of the best tasty treats. As usual there are plenty of laughs and lots of action. Really enjoyable.

I received an ARC copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Love this series

A fun series about a retired inspector traveling in the UK with his former police dog on a food tour. I find myself checking out the food Albert is exploring since the cuisine is different from the US. The plot and subplots move quickly. There is humor with the antics of Rex that had me laughing out loud. I can't wait for the next book!

Hot Pot

This book was almost as confusing as the one before but not quite! It was a great read and I can’t explain how much I laugh at the antics of Rex. He is a veritable character that makes me out loud when remembering some of his antics. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

Rex had it right

Another hit right from the start. Murder, jealousy, attempted murder, more jealousy, hilarious antics from Rex and this was a recipe for a great story. I might have peed a little from laughing in certain parts but it was worth it.

I am glad that Albert did not appear as ditsy in this book as he previously appeared. This book seems to have lost the gastrothief thread. Not my fav of the series but still an enjoyable , easy read. I LOVED the scene where the car grill played dead. I clutched my phone and manically giggled.

Albert and Rex are venturing into Lancashire to learn about the Hotpot. As they arrive at the destination, the police are on site as a TV chef is deceased. The circumstances are questionable. The suspect list is long. And the detective in charge is unwilling to investigate properly.

This story is an engaging "Cozy Culinary Mystery." The main characters go to great lengths to learn meaningful details about the crime to help the local constabulary find the correct culprit. The tale comes to a rousing conclusion because of the long years of experience available. Hopefully, the following episodes are just as entertaining.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Haunting. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
