After a degree in History of literature at Uppsala University he worked as a newspaper columnist and TV debate moderator from 1965 to 1976. Because of his work he soon became an influential figure on the Swedish literary scene. From 1970 to 1971 Enquist lived in Berlin on a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service and in 1973 he was a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been working as an independent writer since 1977.
Enquist's works are characterized by a chronic pessimistic view of the world. They always describe the restrictions imposed by the pietistical way of living, especially in March of the Musicians (1978) and Lewi's Journey (2001). Disappointing -- the idea was interesting (famous hysteria patient from Charcot's Salpetriere hospital in 1880s) ends up working in Marie Curie's laboratory in turn of the century Paris.... but the story is too disjointed and melodramatic. Enquist makes up notebooks that the patient, Blanche Wittman, wrote and quotes portentously from them about her quest for love, her secrets, etc It just gets tiresome.

This is the unusual story of Marie Curie and Blanche Wittman; two extraordinary women caught between the ordered mathematics of science and the symbolic alchemy of love. The novel deals with amputated emotions, the desire for detachment and its antithesis; a longing for reconnection. Set during the dawn of a new century; Enquist explores the questioning of the rational ‘Enlightenment’ period which nurtured cut and dry methods of modern science and the unfathomable, fledgling studies of psychology.
In the heart of this revolution, the arcane gods of alchemy clashed with the new generation of scientific thinkers who championed the sloughing off of Old-World superstitions to make way for solid fact. Amongst this tumult, Enquist recognises Wittman and Curie as major players and revolutionaries as well as victims of the struggle between the increasingly masculine world they inhabited and their feminine needs.
“The word ‘medicine’, Charcot told her, ‘comes from Medea, the mother of Witchcraft.”
“Does that mean you are a magician?” she asked.
“No”, he said, “I am a prisoner of reason, with my feet buried deeply in the mub from which magic is composed.”
At the crux of this strange narrative lies the eternal battle between the rational senses and the repressed, animal psyche. Enquist builds a masterful framework based on these opposing principles on which to hang and analyse the passions, obsessions and martyred freedom of these women. The result is that he draws many fine connections between the frustrating incompatibility of what we are, and what the world expects us to be.
Inspired by Wittman’s diaries, Enquist finds ways to weave her erratic accounts with historical documents of that time. The story itself is divided into three colours; red, black and yellow which represent the colours of the three diaries Wittman used to record her thoughts.
To begin with, I found Wittman’s personal history infinitely more fascinating than Curie’s; purely because of the sheer bloody-mindedness of her devotion for a science that she was not only a guinea-pig of, but later to which she was a major scientific contributor. While Curie is meted as one of those rare female geniuses that made science her life; Wittman emerges as a little short of a saint, who surrendered her body piecemeal to that wondrous and deadly discovery known today as radium.
At the beginning of the story we are introduced to Wittman in the final stages of her life. She is quite literally only half the woman she once was, having lost three limbs to the radium research that eventually killed her. As an amputee riddled with tumours, she dedicates the rest of her life to recording her experiences as an inmate of the mental institution at Saltpetriere and later as research assistant to the Curie’s. Already a celebrity when she first met the Curie’s, Wittman was famous for her performance of hysterical séances conducted by Prof. Charcot, who later became her lover.

Wittman is presented as a woman riddled by obsessions so severe that they manifest in the form of her withering limbs, but Marie Curie is not immune to this form of hysteria. In the final chapters of his book Enquist shows us an alternative Curie; one stripped of that infallible, sterile image that we associate with the founder of radium. We meet a Marie restored to femininity, a Marie who has had been deserted in the wilderness of her deepest sexual desires without a compass to guide her. Enquist’s Curie is so far from the persona we are familiar with, that the tale of forbidden love that ensues serves as a deeply embarrassing and candid account of an average woman’s fall from grace.
The ways in which ‘love’ manifests throughout the novel resembles the chemical transmutations that the Curie’s concoct for their radium research. Science itself becomes a metaphoric element that Enquist shows as having transfused into the lives of these two historic women.
Radium, the cause of Blanche Wittman and later Marie Curie’s death is used as a clever device to represent the toxic, cancerous quality of love.
“He is reposing, secure and painless like a cancerous tumour of love, in her life.”
The luminescence and radiation of unbearable desire is seen as the true culprit in the demise of the women. Enquist takes ‘hysteria’ (a psychological condition synonymous with feminine weakness) and turns it into the guiding light. The phosphorus burn of love remains ever elusive, as neither woman has sufficient words to describe it in the various forms it takes. In conclusion, the formulaic sum of its parts are far too dispersed making them irreconcilable.

Time and time again we see Wittman trying to rationalise ‘love’ through the use of scientific methods of questioning, however this falls apart at the seams as the story verges on a narrative hysteria of sorts. The overuse of exclamation marks indicates over excitement that is associated with Wittman’s previous occupation at the mental institute, where she would stimulate bouts of hysteria with the aid of hypnotism. The use of the three colours red, black and yellow are reminiscent of the ancient method of classifying different physical maladies (research). Enquist also uses her amputations to refer to many different folktales where this takes place. I was surprised and moved at the reference to the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Anderson’s tale of the girl with the red shoes, as it beautifully mirrors the moral tale of the price one pays for one’s vanities and obsessions.

Reading this book gives you a feeling that the people who you used to read in your science books in school are alive: Marie Curie (the only female who won Nobel prize twice: first for physics with his husband Pierre Curie and second for chemistry. She discovered radium and plotonium); Albert Eistein (theory of relativity), Sigmund Freud (theory of unconscious mind); Louis Pasteur (germ theory of disease), Joseph Babinski (Babinski reflex), Paul Langevin (Langevin dynamics and Langevin equation) and John Martin Charcot (the founder of modern neurology).
However, this is not a science history book. First and foremost, this is a story of love affairs, mostly forbidden. Brainy as they were, these people also have sex urges and they don't care if they were in the radiation laboratory when the urge kicks in. There is a scene between Marie and the married man, Paul where they made love on top of the laboratory table where blue-glowing Radium is being extracted from pitchblend. I agree with the blurb from O, The Oprah Magazine saying: "These women (pertaining to Marie and her friend Blanche) explore passion so hot it's radioactive."
Well, Marie Curie had five loves: first two when she was still in Poland. Third was his husband Pierre with whom she had two daughters. When Pierre died, she had an illicit affair with a married man, the physicist Paul Langevin that created a controversy and almost became a reason for the Swedes not to award her 2nd Nobel prize. Along with these love affairs was her lesbian affair with, the Queen of Hysterics, Blanche Wittman who is the narrator of this book.
The novel is divided into three books: the yellow (basically on the love triangle of Blanche, Charcot and the dancer Jean Avril), black (the love triangle of Marie, Paul and his wife Helen) and red which includes the book's conclusion or specifically the answer to why the story had to be told, that's how it was, that's how it happened, that was the whole story (p. 196)
The three books are basically found inside a brown file folder with labelled AMOR OMINA VINCIT or LOVE CONQUERS ALL and above this is a label, "BOOK OF QUESTIONS". Blanche was the one who compiled all the books and put them in that file folder before she died. In each book, there are questions on top of the entries and in the last book is this question: What is the innermost secret of love? . The answer was actually whispered by Blanche when her husband Charcot died. Marie also told the same to Blanche when, after both the legs and left arm of the latter were amputated (due to radiation), she was about to die. Marie whispered to her "I will never leave your side".
The only reason why I am not giving this a five-star rating is that I read this in English. If only I knew how to read Swedish, I know that the cadence could be flawless and not erratic. In fact, the answer of not leaving by one's side does not really make sense as the innermost secret of love. There must be rhyme or something that got lost in translation. Anyway, we all get the drift. I think. I did.
However, still the intensity of love and lust is very much expressed in the book. Brainy as they were, they are still mortal beings like us.

Hello, female children. Allow me to inspire you with a story about a great female scientist. Polish-born, French-educated Madame Curie. Co-discover of radioactivity. She was a hero of science until her hair fell out, her vomit and stool became filled with blood, and she was poisoned to death by her own discovery. With a little hard work, I see no reason why that can't also happen to any of you. (The Big Bang Theory)
1. Одразу скажу, що ця книга піде не всім. Якщо ви шукаєте класичну біографічну історію з послідовним викладом основних подій життя і роботи мадам Кюрі, вам не сюди.
2. Пер Улоф Енквіст має свій своєрідний стиль, і багато в чому він робить протилежне до того, що зазвичай робить біограф — замість того, щоб залишатися відстороненим, він усе пропускає крізь власний досвід, пише, яку жінку з власного життя йому нагадує Бланш, а яку — Марі, ділиться особистими спогадами, шукає зв'язків зі своєю рідною Швецією. Іноді здається, що він пише про своїх подруг або родичок, може, саме завдяки цьому обидві жінки постають напрочуд живими, як, утім, і їхні колєжанки, теж дуже цікаві особистості (наприкінці книги Марі перебуває в Лондоні, де саме вирує рух суфражисток).
3. У цій книзі багато болю і горя (як без цього написати про жінку, якій через небезпечну роботу ампутували три кінцівки?), але є й про короткі миті щастя і про любов, якій немає кінця (Я ніколи не відступлюся від тебе.).
4. Я не усвідомлювала до цієї книги, скільки у мадам Кюрі було, як тепер кажуть, хейтерів. Усіх цих покидьків, які абсолютно нічого не досягли у власному житті і які тільки й чекали, коли вона проступиться. Чому її ненавиділи? Ті самі висмоктані з пальця причини, що й тепер: жінка-науковець! полька! (чужинка!) єврейка! шльондра! Скандал, який виник через її одруженого коханця, ледь не позбавив її другої Нобелівської премії (цього разу з хімії і особистої).
5. Щось я тут уже багато найспойлерила. Основна моя думка така: дайте шанс цій книжці. Я не гарантую, що вона вам сподобається, але це важлива історія, після якої вам буде про що подумати.

The use and abuse of exclamation points drove me nuts, and the vacuity of the "story" did nothing to make me forget the terrible writing. Its only redeeming quality seems to be its shortness.

Хотілося б написати про цю книгу більше, ніж я зараз можу.
Вона - не підберу слова українською - максимально engaging водночас інтелектуально та емоційно.
Це історія про Марію Склодовську, її відкриття радію (що коштували життя не лише їй та її чоловікові, але й Бланш, другій героїні) та її роман, який коштував їй репутації та призвів до цькування і переслідувань. Історія про жінок, на плечах яких ми стоїмо (короткий уривок про британських суфражисток, одна з яких прихистила Марі у Британії, коли у Франції її переслідували через роман із жонатим колегою, був для мене дуже важливим). Історія про дуже щільний період історії, коли жінка були водночас істеричкою - об'єктом вивчення та контролю, темрявою та аффектом, який необхідно вгамувати і вивести на світло, політичною активісткою, яку треба було припнути, морити голодом, висміяти, і професіоналкою - науковицею, лікаркою, журналісткою, самодостатньою і творчою силою.
Цей час зачаровує мене - уся потуга науки, що нарешті докопалася до суті речей, і містицизм, який хвилею пробіг світом, безтурботно займаючи місце у головах людей поруч із наукою. Сальпетрієр - середньовічний притулок-в'язниця для безумних, калік, аморальних, для усієї можливою поторочі, який перетворився на медичний театр.
Раціо та аффект, історія та майбутнє, технологія та містицизм - Енквіст втиснув у цей малесенький романі на 200 сторінок буквально есенцію початку ХХ століття. Окремі речення, абзаци можна розгортати у розвідки, статті, біографії, у цій книжці - потенція для десятків годин читання і розмов.
Але, звісно ж, насправді це роман про кохання.
Про те, як наважитися, як знайти місце для нього, як перебути його, ніби темну холодну ніч.
"Ми можемо уявити, що ти збираєшся вирушити на Аляску і ніколи не повернешся. ... Ти вирушаєш до Нома і зупиняєшся в Парижі лише на одну ніч, а потім, під час подорожі до Нома, помираєш. І ніхто тебе не дістане, а нам було так добре разом..."
Кохати, уявляючи, що світу не існує, що ж тільки тут і зараз, а завтра ви зникнете.
Це дуже темні речі, далекі від сучасної прозорою, проговореної, комфортної та екологічної любові, речі з минулої доби, сповнені болю аж до кісткового мозку (опроміненого радієм), сповнені відчаю і безнадії.
Любов, що калічить і лишає сліди, "ніби тавро на тварині".
Якою є природа любові? - запитує Бланш Віттман, королева істеричок. "Я ніколи не відступлюся від тебе", - відповідає сама собі, і Шарко, своєму лікареві, і Марії, своїй подрузі.
Чи може любов зцілити Марію (від самотності, заціпеністі, від раку)? Бланш думала, що так, вийшло навпаки.
Чим була любов для Бланш, яка стверджувала, що вбила Шарко, що любила його, що ненавиділа, не давала себе торкатися, але дозволяла демонструвати?
Знов-таки, на 200 сторінках, без особливого сюжету, майже без діалогів, у дуже туманий спосіб, без ясної мети, Енквіст затягує у намул спогадів та емоцій, змушує хотіти чогось неможливого, боятися того, що не станеться, жертвувати безпекою, спокоєм та передбачуваність заради інтенсивності відчуттів.
Така собі машина часу з наших просвічених днів у часи несвідомих збурень та публічних переступів.

Історія про дуже щільний період історії, коли жінка були водночас істеричкою - об'єктом вивчення та контролю, темрявою та аффектом, який необхідно вгамувати і вивести на світло, політичною активісткою, яку треба було припнути, морити голодом, висміяти, і професіоналкою - науковицею, лікаркою, журналісткою, самодостатньою і творчою силою.
Цей час зачаровує мене - уся потуга науки, що нарешті докопалася до суті речей, і містицизм, який хвилею пробіг світом, безтурботно займаючи місце у головах людей поруч із наукою. Сальпетрієр - середньовічний притулок-в'язниця для безумних, калік, аморальних, для усієї можливою поторочі, який перетворився на медичний театр.
Раціо та аффект, історія та майбутнє, технологія та містицизм - Енквіст втиснув у цей малесенький романі на 200 сторінок буквально есенцію початку ХХ століття. Окремі речення, абзаци можна розгортати у розвідки, статті, біографії, у цій книжці - потенція для десятків годин читання і розмов.
Але, звісно ж, насправді це роман про кохання.
Про те, як наважитися, як знайти місце для нього, як перебути його, ніби темну холодну ніч.
"Ми можемо уявити, що ти збираєшся вирушити на Аляску і ніколи не повернешся. ... Ти вирушаєш до Нома і зупиняєшся в Парижі лише на одну ніч, а потім, під час подорожі до Нома, помираєш. І ніхто тебе не дістане, а нам було так добре разом..."
Кохати, уявляючи, що світу не існує, що ж тільки тут і зараз, а завтра ви зникнете.
Це дуже темні речі, далекі від сучасної прозорою, проговореної, комфортної та екологічної любові, речі з минулої доби, сповнені болю аж до кісткового мозку (опроміненого радієм), сповнені відчаю і безнадії.
Любов, що калічить і лишає сліди, "ніби тавро на тварині".
Якою є природа любові? - запитує Бланш Віттман, королева істеричок. "Я ніколи не відступлюся від тебе", - відповідає сама собі, і Шарко, своєму лікареві, і Марії, своїй подрузі.
Чи може любов зцілити Марію (від самотності, заціпеністі, від раку)? Бланш думала, що так, вийшло навпаки.
Чим була любов для Бланш, яка стверджувала, що вбила Шарко, що любила його, що ненавиділа, не давала себе торкатися, але дозволяла демонструвати?
Знов-таки, на 200 сторінках, без особливого сюжету, майже без діалогів, у дуже туманий спосіб, без ясної мети, Енквіст затягує у намул спогадів та емоцій, змушує хотіти чогось неможливого, боятися того, що не станеться, жертвувати безпекою, спокоєм та передбачуваність заради інтенсивності відчуттів.

Pierre Curie dies in 1906 when a vehicle hits him. In 1910 Marie Curie falls in love with a married man with children, Paul Langevin. Things become very difficult and complicated for Marie when Paul Langevin’s wife learns of the affair.
The book is at times difficult to read with some unclear passages and a narrative that is not sequential. Blanche’s character is a little mystifying. The reader does not gain a clear appreciation of why she is a dynamic person.

Тема і герої (відомі науковці минулого століття) просто бомбічні - Париж ХІХ і початку ХХ ст., лікування істерії, Шарко, Фройд, Бланш Віттман, дослідження радіоактивності, Марі та П'єр Кюрі, Поль Ланжевен. Їхні історії, стосунки і драми дуже цікаві.
Але манера письма автора не зайшла.. постійні повтори, риторичні питання (як у "Книзі запитань" Бланш), обриви, незрозумілі високі ноти (!) викладу оповіді, уривчастість і круговерть, ніби автор кидається в лихоманці у своїй залежності темою Бланш.
Хотілось би прочитати ще щось про цю історію, але у більш виваженій манері)))

енквіст – хороший містифікатор, який використовує рівно стільки правди, щоб, з одного боку, читачам було комфортно сприймати всю його розповідь як опис реальних подій – і, з іншого, не особливо зв'язувати собі руки історичними умовностями, які в сюжет можуть вкластися недостатньо добре. після нього хочеться більше почитати і про сальпетрієр (принаймні в мішеля фуко – все одно "історія безумства" з тих книжок, які дуже варто, але до яких ніяк не доходять руки), і про марі кюрі.
не знаю, щоправда, чи витримаю біографію кюрі – навіть у стислому, фрагментарному викладі енквіста від неї безпробудно сумно, і справа ніяк не в наслідках радіації. люди зі своїми подвійними стандартами й лицемірними вимогами таки гірші за радіацію, а впоратися з ними, як показує досвід, значно складніше.

Maybe I missed something, but I really didn't get this book. I found it to be repetitive, boring, and easy to put down. The only part that was mildly interesting was the setting and the period of time during which psychology was still an emerging science or maybe art.

Дуже цікава розповідь про нобелівську лауреатку, про її життя, про чоловіків і про те, наскільки в той час засуджували жінок. Блін, як добре, що живемо в інші часи. Коли те, з ким зустрічаєшся, кого любиш абсолютно твоя справа. Зачепило це дуже. І найосновніше те, що в стосунках страждала жінка, а чоловік, попри винуватість, скажем так, виходив "сухим". Жінка ж зазнавала поневірянь, позору і всього іншого

Hidastempoinen, jutusteleva tutkielma kahdesta 1900-luvulla tieteelle elämänsä enemmän tai vähemmän antaneesta naisesta, Marie Curiesta ja Blanche Wittmanista. Enquist kuvaa herkästi Pariisin Salpetrieren sairaalan hysteerikkonäytöksissä esiintyneen ja Curieiden avustajana toimineen, elämänsä viime hetket lähes kaikki raajat amputoituneena eläneen Blanchen tuntoja ja juttelee tämän jälkeensä jättämien kirjojen kanssa, joskus toki ehkä hieman liikaa tulkiten. Opin paljon uutta Curiesta ja hämmästyin Britannian suffragettien kokemasta julmuudesta.

Started up in poetic and thrilling way. The interconnections between live, science, hysteria and radium was alive. But that was almost it, seeing the pattern, feeling its wildness. The book then became a jungleexpedition in search of something more to the primary thesis or some more poetry. But, the idea of the book was a lot better than the book itself.

Interessante Idee, das Leben von Marie Curie auch unter dem Blickwinkel Emanzipation und Frauen in der Wissenschaft literarisch zu verarbeiten. Aber leider war es dann sehr langatmig und verlor sich in Details, die keinen Mehrwert hatten.

Knjigu sam dosta „razvukla“, što zbog neobičnog piščevog stila (koji mi se usput dopao), što zbog teške teme, što zbog obaveza. Marija iz naslova je poznata prva žena Nobelovka (ustvari prva u mnogo čemu na polju fizike i hemije) Marija Kiri, a Blanš je (do tada meni potpuno nepoznata) Blanš Vitman, poznata pacijentkinja neurologa Šarkoa koju je lečio u klinici od tada „otkrivene“ bolesti nazvane histerija. Enkvist meša stvarnost i fikciju u dovoljnoj meri da stvori ovu neobičnu knjigu.

Ik vind dit een geslaagde roman. Knap hoe Enquist een verhaal bouwt rondom de onbekende figuur van eenvoudige komaf Blanche Wittman en de wereldberoemde natuurkundige Mme Curie. Tijdens experimenten over de aard van de hysterie van de arts Charcot aan het einde van de 19e eeuw, was Blanche een van de vrouwen die ten overstaan van een publiek onder hypnose, naakt, werden ingezet. Later wordt ze de assistente van Mme Curie. Zelf raakt Mme Curie in 1911 verwikkeld in een schandaal als haar affaire met de natuurkundige Paul Langevin in de publiciteit komt. ‘De radiumgloed met zijn geheimzinnige blauwe licht heeft nu het hart in vuur en vlam gezet van een die wetenschappers die zo intens de straling ervan bestudeert, terwijl zijn vrouw en kinderen gelaten huilen,’ zo opent Le Journal. Mme Curie wordt met de grond gelijk gemaakt, dat ze Pools is, en (wellicht) joods, wordt erbij gehaald, er wordt revanche gezocht voor de Dreyfuss-affaire. Heftig.
Blanche zegt dan: ‘Marie, jij bevindt je nu in een situatie die ik heel goed ken. De wilde beesten kijken naar je. Why did I pick this up and did it deliver what it said it would?
I did not, it was sent to me as a birthday gift from a friend. I don't typically pick up books like these and uh...it seems like that won't change anytime soon.
What did I like?
Honestly...not a lot. I liked that it was about 2 women but that's about it.
What did I dislike?
- The prose that it was written in, this semi-romanticism, float on clouds and drink valium until you're passed out in the backyard. those have never been my books and never will be.
- The fact that it was probably 50% made up (maybe even more)? Don't worry the author says that and does not deny it, but it bothers me personally because i dislike reading made up shit about real life people. And the fact that he does not specify which thing was made up makes me even more angry. I dislike that he's putting words in their mouths and the reader has no idea what really happened and what didn't.
- I dislike the way one of them is repeatedly mentioned to be a torso in a box. yes. we get it. writing it out 70 times per page (hyperbole) is redundant and also please was that woman all that she was??? a torso in a box. He basically reduces her to those few words the first 3/4th of the book and then kinda tries to fix that by showing us oh no that she was really a person.
- The fact that it's not really about Blanche and Marie because they barely interact. It's honestly more about this fantasy dream world where the author as blanche romanticizes about love without heads or tails.
Would I read more by this author? No.
Would I recommend it? No. Don't waste your time.

"Історія є у всіх, та про небагатьох написано".
Це книга, якій ви повірите. Хоч добре знаєте, що це не біографія, а художня вигадка, хоч часом все видаватиметься вам геть сюрреалістичним. Ви повірите. І ще цілий вечір після прочитання не відлипатимете від ноутбука, прагнучи зрозуміти, що ж тут правда, а що вигадка. А потім подумаєте, що це, зрештою, не має ніякого значення, бо вам і так подобається історія Бланш і Марі, правда це чи ні, і покинете ту дурну справу.
Тут багато про жінок. Не тільки про Бланш Віттман, Марі Склодовську-Кюрі чи Жанну Авріль. Взагалі про жінок. Суфражисток, успішних жінок-науковців, жінок-"істеричок", що так лякають чоловіків. Про дітей, доля яких так сильно залежить від батьків. Про історію психіатрії і відкриття радію з усіма його наслідками. Це про дружбу і суперництво, радість перемог і тугу за втраченими можливостями. А загалом, тут про любов. Про прагнення знайти її, зрозуміти, втримати, використати і увічнити. Про таку різну любов: неможливу, беззастережну, зраджену, нерозділену, безмежну, викривлену. І завжди незрозумілу. Бланш Віттман прагнула пояснити любов, пишучи свою "Книгу запитань". Марі проживала любов, яка відібрала в неї все, і просто шукала відповідей. Жодна не отримала того, чого хотіла, бо "любов неможливо пояснити. Та ким ми були б, якби не намагалися?"
Якщо Енквіст хотів, щоб його історії повірили більше, ніж реальним фактам, йому вдалось. Ще одне стовідсоткове влучання від ВСЛ. Блискуче.

"Maybe I just didn't get it - I found it way too repetitive.." is what I saw in quite a few reviews of this book. I must also say - maybe I just didn't get something, I didn't find it repetitive at all.
A rose is a rose is a rose... You know what Gertrude Stein said when some one asked her why she uses so many repetitions? "No, no, no, those are not repetitions at all". She used the comparison with a frog - it might seam as a repetitive action but actually no frog jumps are the same. Hmm.. a better one - she also said that when a man thousands of years ago looked at moon, he saw the moon. What we see now is our knowledge about moon, all the moons mentioned in love poetry or horror stories. I hope Gertrude will forgive me interpreting her texts. Because I believe that is precisely what is happening within truly great book.
Of course, overuse of a metaphor can get a bit annoying (but I will amputate my annoyance right here).
Nevertheless, this book really motivates me to dig deeper (I didn't know anything about Queen of Hysterics Blanche Wittmann) and inspires me to follow whatever my heart burns for. And make a research in advance if this flame is not going to burn off my limbs. Just in case.

Enquist is my favourite Swedish writer, and I'm so happy he has given us the story of Blanche Wittman from the hands of Dr Charcot at La Salpêtrière to being the assistant of Marie Curie. The story of the Swedish Nobel Prize Committee, twice reluctant to have her as Nobel Prize Laureate. The history of 100 years ago, told the human way. #eyeopener

Marie è Marie Curie, l'eroina della scienza, la visionaria polacca la cui scoperta del radio e le rivoluzionarie ricerche sulla radioattività valsero ben due premi Nobel (il primo Nobel dato a una donna e la prima persona a meritarne un secondo).
Blanche Wittman è la paziente preferita del dottor Charcot, la regina delle isteriche alle cui pubbliche sedute di ipnosi assistevano Freud, Strindberg e Babinski.
Entrambe bruciate nell'anima e nel corpo dall'inspiegabile e letale luminescenza azzurra del radio e da quella non meno misterioso e mortale della passione.
Scrive Dacia Maraini nella postfazione:
"Ricordo di aver sentito parlare di lei (Marie Curie) per la prima volta a scuola. L'insegnante ce la presentava come una accanita lavoratrice, un genio della scienza, una donna completamente dedita alla sperimentazione, senza mai accennare alla sua vita privata, quasi fosse per antonomasia inesistente. Si sottintendeva che, essendo sposata all'esimio scienziato Pierre Curie, non poteva, da brava moglie, che lavargli le camicie e cucinare le cene come avrebbe fatto qualsiasi moglie italiana.

Blanche Wittman è la paziente preferita del dottor Charcot, la regina delle isteriche alle cui pubbliche sedute di ipnosi assistevano Freud, Strindberg e Babinski.
Entrambe bruciate nell'anima e nel corpo dall'inspiegabile e letale luminescenza azzurra del radio e da quella non meno misterioso e mortale della passione.
Scrive Dacia Maraini nella postfazione:
"Ricordo di aver sentito parlare di lei (Marie Curie) per la prima volta a scuola. L'insegnante ce la presentava come una accanita lavoratrice, un genio della scienza, una donna completamente dedita alla sperimentazione, senza mai accennare alla sua vita privata, quasi fosse per antonomasia inesistente. Si sottintendeva che, essendo sposata all'esimio scienziato Pierre Curie, non poteva, da brava moglie, che lavargli le camicie e cucinare le cene come avrebbe fatto qualsiasi moglie italiana.

Op het schilderij Une leçon clinique à la Salpêtrière van André Brouillet zien we professor Charcot en Blanche. Blanche onder hypnose. Een uitsnede is hier te zien op het omslag van de Nederlandse vertaling. Charcot, die ik al eerder tegenkwam in het boek Human Traces van Sebastian Faulks, is vooral bekend van zijn behandelingen van wat toen werd genoemd hysterie. Nogal omstreden behandelingen.
Charcot kwam te overlijden in 1893 waarna Blanche de assistent werd van Marie Curie. De ontdekster van radium en tweevoudig Nobelprijswinnares. Een te veel aan straling zou beiden uiteindelijk fataal worden.
In zijn typisch non-fictie romanstijl heeft Per Olov Enquist hier weer een bijzonder verhaal gecreëerd. Niet lineair. En niet altijd even makkelijk te volgen. Maar sommige scenes zijn schitterend. Naar mijn mening zijn Het bezoek van de lijfarts en ook De vijfde winter van de magnetiseur beter en makkelijker te lezen. Maar toch is dit een boeiend inkijkje in het leven van beide dames. De focus ligt op de liefde. Altijd weer de liefde! 3,5*
