Daisy and Friends What Happened to Yesterday: A Covid-19 Story

Rate this book
"YESTERDAY we could go to our classrooms in school and our parents went to work every day. TODAY some of our parents stay home from work and we are home schooled."

Once again, meet Daisy the cat and her three canine friends, H-Dee, Smokie, and Rocky, as together they face a worldwide pandemic.

The story tackles the Covid-19 pandemic and how everyone's life changed in just one year.

Daisy and Friends What Happened to A Covid-19 Story begins with the definition of the words pandemic and essential workers. The story then explains the changes in our daily lives before and during the pandemic.

" When many people in a country or even all over the world have the same illness."

" A flu-like illness that passes from one person to another person when they have this illness by sneezing and coughing without covering their nose and mouth. Another way people contract Covid-19 is touching something that the affected person has touched. Some people do not know that they are sick with the Covid-19 until a few days after when they show symptoms of the illness. This is the reason why everyone needs to wear their masks in public, sanitize and wash their hands frequently, and stay six feet away from people they do not live with."

Inspiration for the author's books comes from her working over 20 years as a pre-school teacher observing children at work and play.

Daisy and Friends: What Happened to Yesterday – A Gentle Introduction to the Pandemic for Young Readers

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Barbara J. Meredith’s Daisy and Friends: What Happened to Yesterday aims to help children understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic through the lens of Daisy and her animal friends. The story explores themes of sudden changes, isolation, and confusion, offering young readers a relatable and gentle way to process the events of a global crisis.

The book’s strength lies in its heartwarming characters. Daisy and her friends are endearing, and their conversations about the pandemic feel approachable for younger audiences. Meredith uses simple, clear language to explain the disruption caused by the virus, from missing out on school to not being able to play with friends. For children who experienced similar feelings of uncertainty, this story provides a reassuring voice, normalizing their emotions.

However, the narrative can feel overly simplistic at times, missing an opportunity to dive deeper into some of the emotions and complexities children faced during the pandemic. While the book succeeds in easing anxieties, it might not fully engage older children or those looking for more detailed storytelling. Additionally, the illustrations, while charming, could have been more dynamic to further captivate readers and add to the overall impact of the story.

Overall, Daisy and Friends serves its purpose as an introductory tool for young children grappling with the changes brought on by Covid-19. It may not leave a lasting impression for all readers, but it’s a comforting resource for parents and educators to initiate discussions about the pandemic’s effects.

This review highlights the book’s accessibility and comfort for young readers, while acknowledging its simplicity and limited depth.

🖍️ If looked at as a sort of study into the minds of people during the Scamdemic of 2019-22, Daisy and Friends What Happened to Yesterday: A Covid-19 Story gives a fascinating peek into that attitude and psychology of the Malefactors and True Believers. Be terrified of the flu, hide and cower— Three dogs and a cat show us how to follow the crowd, obey questionable rules, and most of all, do not ask questions. I say that this book can be used as a look into the Era of the Scamdemic, for we have learned much in the years after being beat down with it—the standing six feet from strangers has been debunked by The Malefactors, wearing “the mask” has been proven to be ineffective, et cetera.

Enough said about this nonsense.

There are typographical errors, e.g. “the effected person” among a few obvious others.

✧⋆˚₊˚⋆✧ Excerpt of note:
🔸 Daisy, Rocky, Smokie, and H-Dee want to once again remind you to wear your mask, keep washing and sanitizing your hands frequently and stand six feet apart from people who do not live with you. Because they want you to stay healthy!

Thanks to Barbara Meredith for gifting me this book to review!

I think that there was a really solid idea here, but it was executed poorly. Allow me to explain. I definitely think that this is a great book for little ones to be educated on the COVID-19 pandemic in an easy-to-understand way. At the same time, however, the delivery/the way the book was written felt very depressing. Sure, writing about the pandemic isn't going to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows but you don't want kids to walk away from a book feeling sad. The main thing that made this book such a downer was how each phrase ended with: "because of the COVID-19 pandemic". The author really doesn't let us forget that all of this happened due to COVID! To fix this, I would remove this phrase altogether, but keep everything else as-is. Daisy and her friends remaining present will keep this story somewhat lighthearted, but the writing will still allow it to be informational.

I won this through a Goodreads Giveaway.

A cute book about why things changed during the onset of Covid-19 for kids. It's narrated by Daisy, Rocky, Smokie and H-Dee, all dogs. It shows how before COVID we could go and do a lot of things, but during COVID how we had to mask up. It written so children could understand all that was happening during time.

Thanks to Goodreads, the publisher and Meredith for the E-book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

😊 Happy Reading 😊

Because of covid 19

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. I thought it would be fun for my neices but they'll never see it. I found this book to focus negatively on changes that were made during covid. I think for children, we should be as positive as we can. I also felt like it encourages children to place blame...because of covid 19. Cute idea, I just felt that it's not actually written for kids of the 2020s.

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway.

This book explains how things changed during the pandemic. The artwork is engaging and coincides with the changes that are listed. There is no story.

As the name of the book suggests, this is very specific to the height of the pandemic. Because there is no story and we are no longer in the height of the pandemic, this book no longer holds much relevance to current readers.

I received this free copy! I'm so glad I did! From the moment we started reading, my children were captivated by Daisy and her adorable friends. The story is not only entertaining but also incredibly relevant to the world we're living in today. It's a wonderful conversation starter for families and a reminder that even in tough times, friendship and resilience can see us through.

During the pandemic life became confusing for all of us. Children especially were looking to understand the new world they were in. In this charming book the contrast between yesterday and 'today' are explained with engaging illustrations featuring the family pets. This was an enjoyable take on these difficult days.

As a side note, while these days are past now, this book remains as an explanation of the difficult times brought on by the pandemic. I would use this story to illustrate just how much life changed in that single year.

Fair disclosure: I received a copy of this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. This in no way influenced my review.

Overall, this is a great book for education for young people about Covid-19 causes, effects, and things we learned we need to do everyday to keep ourselves and others healthy. There are some editing errors, and some of the information is out of date since publication. I would still recommend it though.

This was a great book that helps us relate to the changes we had to make during the pandemic. Children had to change their lives dramatically and quickly due to covid and this book will forever be a part of history that helped our youth cope with those changes. These cute animals make the story more delightful.

I won this e-book at a Goodreads giveaway. I don't know why but I didn't enjoy the book that much. I didn't feel like a story. It's just some basic stuff that we did before and the time of covid comparison. There's no storyline or plot.

Explanatory

This would ha e been a great book to share with kids during the height of the pandemic. So many children were confused by the sudden changes and even scared. This book, with its bright, friendly illustrations, may have made the transitions easier.
