This is not "searching" as in looking for Darcy but rather as in doing the job of searching on Darcy's behalf. Georgiana has disappeared and after searching everywhere he can think of and questioning all he thinks might have a clue, Darcy contacts Elizabeth at the recommendation of Charles Bingley who is married to Jane already and knows of Elizabeth's talent at finding objects and people with her visions connecting her to when either was last seen. He does put her to a small test (as have others) and now trusts her completely.

George Wickham has the "living" at Kympton so he is not the villain in this story.

As this is a mystery and I don't want to spoil the story by laying out how events proceed I will not add much here. The story does eventually jump back and forth between Elizabeth's and Darcy's tracking Georgiana's movements and with what is actually happening to Georgiana from Georgiana's viewpoint.

We have Kitty and a Meryton childhood family friend and several others traveling along. Kitty suffers greatly from seasickness in this story but also comes to find her own happy ending. While most of the interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth has to do with what her "visions" have shown her we do read of their admiration and respect developing.

This was an interesting story which did not dwell on misunderstandings as in canon. Rather we have a small group of people adding their part in the search for one of the Darcys.

This is an unusual paranormal P&P variation. That I felt should have been better.

It is a weird story where Jane & Bingley are married - Lizzy is Miss Bennet and Lydia eloped with Denny while Mr. Wickham is the rector at Kympton.

Additionally the Gardiner family has a history of female's who are seers and Lizzy is one. Lizzy can somehow see into the past and visualize (view) what has happened. And her talent isn't limited to hours or days she can see into the distant millennia. We are exposed to this when she finds a neighbor's missing jade tobacco pipe.

Meanwhile Mr. Darcy is searching high and low for his missing sister who has vanished along with her companion from Ramsgate (okay it might have been somewhere else Margate?)
Anyway luckily Darcy returns to London, runs into Bingley who tells him that his sister the seer is coming to London the next day.
Meanwhile back in Meryton there is a bunch of craziness going on involving a Bennet servant but eventually Lizzy & Kitty and Mr (I forget his name) arrive in London, are met by Darcy & Charles and agree to go on an cross country tour to help find Georgiana.
The author doesn't keep Georgiana's situation secret from the reader we know where she is and what she is doing we just don't know her geographic location.

The author puts a lot of detail into Lizzy's visions to the point where I was just totally bored with it. This is book with way too much telling. As Lizzy speaks her visions aloud. Georgiana also spends her solitary confinement speaking aloud to herself or her friend the mouse.

There are lots and lots of new characters, lots of vomiting and lots of talking. Also Lizzy is almost constantly apologizing for not seeing something it's tedious.
Fun fact The author tied the Gardiners of Meryton to the Gardiners of Connecticut. Which is where Gardiners Island near Plum Island gets its name. And also the character of Ben Gardiner in Jaws the book which is set on Long Island.

Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare. ~ Japanese Proverb

“Searching for Darcy” is an action-filled adventure beginning with a conundrum.

Fitzwilliam Darcy’s sister has disappeared from her residence in Ramsgate. Darcy is alerted by his Aunt Catherine’s letter which takes weeks to reach him. When he arrives in Ramsgate, the trail is cold. He only knows that his sister’s carriage has returned to Pemberley per her orders according to the coachman. Darcy travels to Gretna Green looking for clues to a possible elopement. He discovers nothing and returns to London to confer with his recently-married friend Bingley.

The reader learns early on that Wickham is not involved. In this version, he took orders, married well (in other words, he married someone with money), and remains on good terms with Darcy.

Where is Georgiana?
Where is her maid?
Where is Mrs. Younge?

Bingley suggests Darcy meet with his new sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bennet, who has a rather unusual ability.

The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps — we must step up the stairs. ~ Vance Havner

Females in the Gardiner family sometimes have a gift of “sight.” Elizabeth is the only one of her sisters to inherit that quality. She can “find” things by “seeing” them as they disappear. In the early chapters, the reader gets a sample of Elizabeth’s gift when a neighbor, Mr. Stanhope, asks for her help.

Mr. Stanhope escorts Elizabeth and Kitty to London on a planned visit to the Gardiners where they meet with Bingley and Darcy. Elizabeth agrees to help. Darcy, Elizabeth, Kitty, and Stanhope leave for Ramsgate accompanied by Darcy’s valet and his wife who are along for propriety.

In Ramsgate, Elizabeth looks into the past and discovers a clue. The group begins a journey involving a pirate ship, storms at sea, seasickness (poor Kitty), and a whale. Along for the voyage is a school chum of Bingley and Stanhope who happens to have a ship.

In the end, I did have a few questions about some details of the disappearance but they were not serious enough to stop my enjoyment of this adventure. I especially liked the fact that Wickham was not the culprit for a welcome change!

Very odd story

Lizzy can see into the past but only see things that happened where she currently is. This story is about Lizzy and her amazing power.

It’s funny, it’s a cross country romp, it’s an action story, it’s a thriller. Oh, it’s totally original and true to it’s self. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Very good
I normally do not read books that touch on this kind of genre, even if it’s a Pride and Prejudice variation which is definitely my favourite reading material. I must admit, out of curiosity when I see trusted Goodreads friends rate a book so well, I do make an occasional exception.

I thought this was a pretty darn good story, even though I find Elizabeth’s gift a bit preposterous. I’m simply not a believer in such things, and if in fact they do exist, I am dubious and distrustful of their source, even if the instrument is innocent.

That said, I did enjoy the adventure of searching for Miss Darcy, which I also thought would have been a better title for the book. Darcy was never missing, and throughout the story, even though often stressed and worried about his sister, he comes off as a more than usual pleasant character. Regardless, the story is a page turner, steadily moving toward a happy conclusion.

Lydia and Jane are already married in this story, and it is Kitty that Elizabeth uses to help guide her when she is “looking”, mainly so she doesn’t walk into or trip over things in the present where those objects may not be where she is looking in the past. Kitty without Lydia is a treat to behold.

A tiny quibble— In canon Darcy was a Cambridge man, not Oxford. Author’s choice I suppose, but when it’s clear in Austen’s P&P, why change it?

I kept waiting for Elizabeth to look back on Darcy’s past, but she never does. That could have been great fun! Darcy’s reactions to her comments especially. Ha!

Overall, very well written, and I do recommend it.

Couldn't hold my attention.

Synopsis:

There are some significant alterations to the original P&P timeline, here Darcy did not form part of the Netherfield party and thus Jane & Bingley's relationship blossomed unimpeded. Darcy first meets the Bennets at their wedding and has no pride nor ill disposition, thus is able to straight away appreciate Lizzy's beauty, though he only admires her from afar with no significant interaction.

Wickham got his long bemoaned parish living and is on good terms with Darcy. It is mentioned he used to be a bit wild, but the variable of marriage to a sensible lady had supposedly grounded him. Lydia, despite never having met her would be dear Wicky, still manages to secure an elopement with Mr Denny; proving once and for all Lydia must have her scandal and she cares not with who:
description
The story opens with a haggard & desperate Darcy arriving at Bingley's revealing Georgie has been missing almost a month from Ramsgate.
description
Bingley shares with Darcy that his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, could be the key to finding his sister.
Lizzy benefits from a magical inheritance from her Gardiner side. She can see the past of any place she is in.
description

What Worked:

♡The author explores throwing Lizzy and Kitty together, an interesting dynamic as they are both missing their preferred sister. Lizzy needs a side kick and Kitty needs someone to trail after, and they both fill the others vacuum seamlessly.

♡Mr Stanhope- neat addition. It is humorous to see Kitty being so overt with her intentions towards him. She is awful clingy, I am talking 'Miss Bingley targeting Mr Darcy' level clingy, but here her attentions are welcomed.
Kitty, possessively gripping Mr Stanhope's arm at every opportunity:
description

What Irked:
✗I also echo the other reviewers in that Lizzy having such an ability and being so flagrant about it was very unrealistic, like they only stopped burning women recently and for a hell of a lot less. IMO Lizzy would be much too clever to be loose lipped about it. I could see her helping her neighbors and others with her abilities, but fibbing how she knew what she did, which would have opened up a host of more interesting venues where Lizzy's wit could be exhibited via her creative excuses. Bingley being in on the family secret and Darcy benefiting from what he would have thought otherwise to be a foolish alliance would have been a more compelling statement.

✗A lot of character actions and events felt contrived and did not make sense, i.e. this silliness of Georgiana's maid coming back to find her mistress missing and just nopeing out.
description
Not even alerting her boss his sister has banished, or tendering a resignation before getting a new gig!

✗ Superfluous & boring scenes. So much dialogue that is pleasantries, like 'Oh how do you do? Care for some tea?' Snooze! Wake me up when something is relevant! Enough setting the stage, can we get to the meaty stuff?
description
There were these punishing scenes where we get Georgiana's POV, which would be alright if she were up to anything interesting or were they far shorter. A mere paragraph would have more than sufficed to establish she is cold & confused and that would be plenty atmospheric; a whole chapter is downright excessive.

✗Some moments told from wrong POV. For instance when Lizzy was tested at rosings it was told from her POV.
description
The reader already knows how Lizzy feels when she operates her gift from when she searched for Mr Stanhope's pipe. We should have seen it from an outsiders perspective- Darcy's! Then we could be afforded the emotion that would there lie of him witnessing such a feat and how that impacted his perspective of Lizzy, you know, use it to develop the characters and relationships. Missed opportunity. This whole song and dance of her 'seeing' gets awful repetitive in regurgitated detail.

The Brass Tacks:
It is a perfectly passable JAFF, I daresay some will be able to appreciate it. Unfortunately for me it just evoked a clash of an earworm in the back of mind, deliberating whether I should tread on or cry off.
description
The entire time I was reading that apt melody just taunted me and no line or instance provoked it to abate. The story just didn't grab me- not even by a halfhearted tug of a pinky.

There is no pride nor prejudice from Darcy nor Lizzy, which was weird because there was plenty of legroom for it to fester with the premiss of Lizzy's incredible abilities. The lot would have been a lot more intriguing had tension formed from Darcy being skeptical about Lizzy's abilities, or Lizzy being more shaky on her talent so that sometimes she would fail and cast doubt.

And I guess that encapsulates my chief beef with this work: The story is so mechanical focused on the search, but fails to recall that a story is more than mere events. The plot should act as a backdrop, a showcase, for the characterizations to shine; never is that more crucial than in Fanfiction as readers are there to glimpse their beloved characters first and foremost.

Readers revisit JAFF chiefly for Darcy, Lizzy, & co. There are many more complex books out there about searches for missing people & ESP, if that were what we are in the market for. If I wanted a missing person case without getting much character development I'd watch forensic files or it's ilk.

This review, as all my reviews, is but a post-mortem for me to come to terms with why the book & I didn't jibe, and not intended to deter any prospective readers. I only got to 40% so really what do I know?

Different premise to be sure

But not unwelcome. The story moved along nicely and the way the story was told was well done. New characters introduced but blended in nicely.

I really wanted to like this book. Alas, it’s unfortunately just not for me. Several parts that just didn’t sit well with me.
Miss Darcy is missing, but Mr. Darcy doesn’t find out until weeks later. He has looked everywhere but cannot find a trace of where she went. Her maid Mrs. Younge, who accompanied Miss Darcy to Ramsgate, are also missing. In this story, Bingley is already married to Jane and he asks Elizabeth, who has the gift of “sight” (can look back in time of the place she is currently in), to help find Miss Darcy. Elizabeth follows Darcy to his sisters last known location and then “looks back” in time till she sees here there and follows her from there to discover where she has gone.

I had a hard time believing that her gift wouldn’t be seen as witchcraft and therefore she had no qualms sharing with everyone and anyone about her gift. But I told myself to look past this and accept it in order to move forward with the story.
I truly though Miss Kitty was too bold/forward with the gentlemen she liked and matrimonial wishes for. Too many people knew about Miss Darcy’s sudden disappearance (including her family, servants, and those unrelated to her in any way such as Mr. Collins or strangers she has never met but Darcy is introduced to). This would place Miss Darcy’s reputation at great risk and could easily spread to the ton and become a new scandal for gossip.

The reactions of Mr. Darcy, Miss Elizabeth, and Nurse (this is how Miss Darcy’s nurse is referred to) was extremely disappointing at times as they discover certain things. These reactions come along about 35% if the way through and I will explain it below orrrr you can skip the rest of the review if you don’t want to fine out as you plan to read the book.

FYI, you can see my notes/highlights if interested. I did mark the highlights and notes as a potential spoiler so you can skip it if you aren’t looking to find out just yet. Now... the reactions that were disappointing:

Nurse is portrayed as someone very fond of Miss Darcy and loves her a lot. Hence, she and her husband come along with Mr. Darcy in search of Miss Darcy and act as chaperone while Miss Elizabeth is with him). To me, this meant a dedication and love for her equal to what I feel Mrs. Reynolds likely also has for the Darcys. Yet, upon discovering that Miss Darcy’s maid (Mrs. Clarke) who was supposed to be caring for the young charge ended up running off and finding employment elsewhere when she realizes Miss Darcy is missing, and WITHOUT alerting Mr. Darcy or anyone at all, thinks “poor Mrs. Clarke, she must have been terrified”?

Mrs. Clarke has a lame excuse for why she never said anything to Mr. Darcy and looked for another job. And how does Mr. Darcy react? By paying her wages so far, gives her extra money for her “excellent service” to his sister, and offers her to come back to work for him if/when Miss Darcy is found. What? I don’t understand this at all. This honestly was were I stopped reading :( DNF at ~39%

Entertaining

An enjoyable tale written by a talented author. Elizabeth Bennett has a gift that allows her to "see" events that happened in the past if she has a certain amount of pertinent information. It's an ability that is inherited by only some of the family, and friends ask for her help in finding lost items and other trivial concerns. However, Bingley, already married to Jane, finds out that Darcy's sister has disappeared, so Bingley introduces him to Elizabeth and recommends that Darcy allow Elizabeth to help him find Georgiana. Although Darcy is sceptical at first about Elizabeth's ability, he soon discovers that her gift is quite powerful.

I've read other JAFF variations in which Elizabeth has some sort of special ability, and this one is well executed and easy to understand. The plot , although far fetched, was exciting. I didn't really feel the development of the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy, since Darcy spent most of the book worried about Georgiana, in a hurry to discover her whereabouts, and therefore crabby with everyone. There are other romances going on, as well, and they're wrapped up so neatly and tidily that it's almost too easy.

Although the book is well written, it could have been shortened significantly. Way too much text was wasted on extremely unimportant dialogue and descriptions. So many polite greetings going back and forth, so many descriptions of clothing, dishes at dinner, blushes and other reactions. A certain amount of this information is interesting and necessary, but I feel a line was crossed into excess. I began to skim over paragraphs, and that's never a good sign. Too much content that does nothing to advance the story starts to seem like filler in order to generate more pages.

This isn't great literature, but it's a pleasant way to pass some time, and an interesting plot. I recommend it.

Frolicking Felicity

This was a quite enjoyable and irreverent romp through mystery and romance. The story is placed in am AU, where Jane and Bingley have already married, Lizzy and Darcy first met at the wedding with no ill feelings between them, and Wickham is both not a player and not a dastard.

We start with insight into Lizzy and her gift, introducing some of the main players. We learn of Georgiana's disappearance, and we eventually meet all the principal players. The story starts out nice and tidy, but a few chapters in it splits into two parallel storylines. So we follow our intrepid search and rescue team, interspersed with insight into what Georgiana is doing and learning.

The story is well written and engaging, with out-loud laughter and an overall feeling of joy even with the dreadful reason they are all coming together. I truly loved this variation and shall definitely read it again.

10/10 recommend.

Georgiana Darcy is missing and her brother Fitzwilliam will do anything to recover her. As he runs out of options, he learns that Elizabeth Bennet has a special gift. She can find anything. She has a supernatural power to "see" in the past on demand. Luckily, her sister Kitty, is willing to help and ensure she doesn't hurt herself while following the clues.

Elizabeth is convinced to help, Kitty is convinced to help Elizabeth because the guy she likes is helping as well. The whole team travels up and down the coast and then on the water in an effort to find the missing girl. The missing girl has her own adventures as she adjusts to her situation. During their adventure Elizabeth and Darcy find themselves admiring each other as all the pieces come to a happily ever after.

Other than the names, this story has very little in common with the classic story line.

Not Regency but enjoyable

Love the story, less fond of the writing. If it could be corrected for Regency England habits and attitudes, I would happily give it 5 stars, else give me footnotes supporting shaking hands and the term "blaggard" instead of "blackguard". (I saw nothing in google to support the word). Ignoring what seemed like blatant errors to me, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of a gifted Elizabeth whose gift is accepted instead of having her persecuted as a witch. Is there a sequel? I would love to see an exploration of how the gift relates to Georgiana's dreams.

Inspired

Interesting idea for a P&P Variation which when starting I didn’t think I’d enjoy but as soon as I read the first chapter I was hooked. Although I was happy with the ending (ended how we’d all expect), I think it came about so suddenly and could of added more- turned the last bit into a proper epilogue. Overall really enjoyed it though.

Enjoyable variation.

Story opens dramatically with Darcy searching for his sister. Twist gives Elizabeth Bennett the ability to find something that is lost. Written with a surprising amount of depth of detail to keep the reader engaged and interested in it outcome. Enjoy.

Having read other stories about witches, vampires and fairies, this story about Elizabeth having abilities to “see” while traveling back in time intrigued me.
Mr. Bingley suggests to his long time friend Mr. Darcy that they ask his sister in law Elizabeth Bennet to help search for the missing Miss Darcy.
Elizabeth needs to be able to pin point point a day and possible time to “see” what happened. Mary and sometimes Kitty help Elizabeth while she is “seeing” to avoid injury.
Once Darcy is convinced of Elizabeth’s abilities they begin their search for Miss Darcy at her last known place in Ramsgate.
On this journey, Kitty’s love interest, a neighbor of Longbourn and school mate of Darcy accompany them. As they four travel to Ramsgate, Darcy learns to appreciate Elizabeth and her abilities, falling in love with her.
At the same time Miss Darcy is left alone on an island and learns to fend for herself until her brother comes to rescue her. Although it seemed tedious, I did learn a lot about how one would survive.
Again I would have liked a longer ending with ODC.
