Title: Sending the Divine
4.5 stars.

This was such a detailed and well thought out plot. With the Children of Desire being used as vessels to hold all the vital qi of the flesh idols and Yin Ci being combined with the Hanging Tree to strengthen it (and thus being the tool for its destruction), I was constantly in awe of the mysteries being unravelled before the characters.

Also, I really enjoyed the main pairing. Yin Ci, an immortal corpse that can’t die, but wants to die, and Shen Jingzhi, a Child of Desire that has a chronic illness and will die young, but wants to find a way to survive— their partnership was both ironic and satisfying. I also liked that they didn’t try to pretend to be moral. They were both deeply selfish and ultimately wanted to survive, which is why they had to defeat the Hanging Tree and Jiang Youyue.

The fact that it ended where it began with Auntie Li was just perfect.

It was a very beautiful written novel but the plot moved so slow that I got bored and then annoyed.
The romance was slow burn and while I liked that we had time to get to know the characters and develop their relationship from strangers to master-disciple to friendship and then eventually to lovers it kinda lacked the heat.
The side characters were well written and had complex backgrounds but they didn't add that much to the overall plot and you forget about them from time to time.
This is the first novel I read from this author but I heard a lot of praise for her other novels so I will be reading then in the near future.

I wasn't expecting much when I started this book and ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought. It starts off simply as the main characters meet by chance and partner with each other out of convenience, but as they get deeper into the search for a legendary item, you realize there's an intricate plot woven through each of the arcs and that the two of them have a much deeper connection than initially suggested by their chance encounter.

The story follows the MC, Yin Ci, an immortal and former demonic sect head who has tried to repeatedly kill himself but is unable to do so. He's looking for a rare item that supposedly can cure any illness, in hopes that he can turn it into a poison. As part of the search, he joins up with the ML, Shi Jingzhi, to form their own sect, as only sects can participate in the search. They each have their own reasons for partnering up with the other, but obviously initially they don't really trust each other that much, something that gradually changes as the story progresses.

The story itself was very engaging. It starts off simply but eventually you realize there's a whole conspiracy that's been perpetuated for hundreds of years, and it was an engrossing journey to follow our main characters as they unravel the mystery. Romance was solid as well; reading about how Yin Ci and Shi Jingzhi's relationship evolve and how their interactions change over time was very rewarding.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

The story can be broken into a couple of different arcs:
1. Ghost Tomb, i.e. Yan Budu's tomb where the shirou (the legendary item) is supposedly hidden
2. Yuanxian Village, the next clue for the shirou takes them to this village where they uncover a horrifying plot involving flesh idols
3. Jianchen Temple, they get stuck in the formation leading to the temple and leave embroiled in a larger conspiracy involving the abbot's death
4. Getting help from the Mishan sect, where Chen Qianfan removes the block on the ML's memory and they learn about the Queen of Milan
5. Zongwu Mountain, where they go to find Kongshi's remains and stumble upon a deadly formation in progress
6. Chigou sect, where they plot with a Protector from the sect to prevent the fake Young Patriarch from ascending as sect leader
7. Electing an Alliance leader, where Qu Duanyun gets completely foiled in his attempt and Yan Qing unexpectedly becomes the leader
8. Fight against the Hanging Tree and the Immortal Assembly

There's a lot that happens, so this story is a bit longer than the ones I'm used to at 160+ chapters. The author writes in a way often it's not clear what is happening, so I found myself rereading certain sections a couple times and was still confused. For example, when SJZ gets his humanity in the Buddha Heart Formation, I had no idea that happened until afterwards when they kept alluding to him becoming more human. Needless to say, I was very grateful for the translator's summary at the end of chapter 155 that clearly explains what has happened up till that point, since some of the finer details were lost on me.

I really liked the romance in this story. While Yin Ci and SJZ initially start off as hesitant allies, they get closer as the story progresses, and when they discover their lost shared past, they start trusting each other unconditionally. They can each provide the other with something they need. For Yin Ci, because he's faced so much betrayal in his past life and was alone for the past 300 years, SJZ is like a ray of sun to him and the sole reason for him to want to live again. For SJZ, YC is an important figure as he first helped him quell his object addiction and then brought out his humanity. It's funny that the Imperial Preceptor thought he could use SJZ's object addiction and desire for life to get between these two, but he doesn't realize the strength of their bond.

All the characters in the Kushan Sect and not just the MC and ML were a hoot. The two "servants", Yan Qing and Su Si, were both interesting characters in their own right. I love how Yan Qing, even though he inherited the crazy eyes of Yan Budu and the Ling Sect, just wants to live a proper life, make money, and practice cultivation the right way. His childhood friend, Su Si, lives up to his title as the Young Patriarch of the Chigou sect and toes the line between right and wrong. I kept expecting the author to make the two of them a second pairing, but that never happened and they remain good friends till the end. And of course, you can't forget Lord Bai, the lucky goose. I loved that there was even one chapter written from Lord Bai's perspective, where he wonders where he made a wrong decision :D

Even though it's a plot-heavy story, not everything is serious. Because YC has been alive for 300 years, there are some absolutely hilarious scenes. For example, when he showed up as a "ghost" at the Chigou sect's ascension ceremony to denounce Wu Huai as a fake Patriarch and everyone was down on their knees praying to him. Or when he realized that his former subordinate who calls him "ge" is also SJZ's great-grandfather and he asks for his subordinate's permission to marry SJZ. The look on his subordinate's face when he walked in on them kissing in their bedroom was priceless XP The scene where Yan Qing is drinking tea and spits it out when they decide to make him the Alliance leader was great too:

Yan Qing pondered for a moment, finally calming down. He was about to speak when Yin Ci leisurely added, “The Alliance Leader also receives a monthly salary. By the rules, the leader receives sixteen taels of silver each month. For major sects, this amount is trivial, but…”

Yan Qing’s eyes hardened, and he instantly declared, “I’ll do it!”

The last thought I have on this story is that I'm glad I read it in book form, as so much of what the MC and ML come across would be way too gross for me to watch on TV, even in animated form. It's a good thing I don't have a very active imagination, otherwise I'd be freaked out by the author's descriptions of flesh idols and the lotus flowers blooming on top of corpses and the 3,000 headless corpses stored by the Imperial Preceptor and so much more. There's honestly so much creepy gruesome stuff that the main characters encounter that I'd be surprised if this was ever made into a manhua or anime.

All in all, I really enjoyed this story. I'd give it 5 stars if the writing was easier to follow.

English name: Sendoff or Sending the Divine

How is this not rated higher?! This is an amazing story. I love the HUGE and satisfying character development. And not just among the main characters, plenty of the side characters also get their plots and backstories and development. It's a bit sad that there are no side couples that develop, but a lot is left to the readers' imagination ☺️

I don't know where to start when trying to explain why this story is so good. I think the unraveling mystery and endless scheming is really well done and pretty realistic. This story will definitely captivate your attention and not let go.

I also like how the story illustrates how so much is luck. People live as best they can with what they have and strive to act as well as they can given what they're given. It so perfectly reflects real life. If someone finds themselves successful, however they define success, this isn't license to look down on those doing less well or think of themselves as any more valuable or intrinsically worthy than anyone else. If they were born intrinsically well off, that just meant they had more chances to try and get it right. If they were born less well off, it means they were lucky and able to take advantage of that luck. This isn't to say they didn't try, perhaps even try really hard. But lots of people try really hard and don't make it. And there's people who barely try at all and still make it.

I think it's also great how the main characters in this story accomplish so much, but it's clear that they're only able to due to the slow buildup and work of those that went before. Every great deed is a combination of many people's hard work, even if only a couple people end up being associated with it in the end. Like a research paper, there's a long bibliography and acknowledgment for every great work.

I think the musing on immortality and a person's inner demons was also really interesting. I almost found myself nodding along to some of the Buddhist philosophies the author embeds and interprets in this story.

Finally, I don't think this story would be half as impactful without the thoughtful translation. It captured the humor at the beginning perfectly (I was chuckling along to the many antics), the horror throughout, and the beauty/peace at the end. There are great notes and links when the story references something the reader might need additional context on.

Overall, I can't believe how fast I blazed through this story. I'm definitely now a convert for this author. This story was just so good and well thought out.

Rating: 4/5 - This was one helluva ride and a complex Xuanhuan novel that served well.

Yin Ci and Shi Jingzhi are morally grey characters but are still so loveable. I enjoyed this read as long as it was and even when the story seemed rather convoluted or overly dragged out, it was still very different.

The most interesting concept in this novel for me was the idea of immortality being a form of suffering instead of the bright and shining diamond it’s mostly shown to be.

The pain and morose really hits you with this one and you almost feel relieved when it finally comes to an end.

I initially found this author’s work Stray incredibly difficult to read. Not due to the content but rather just the writing style not gelling with me. However Sendoff is definitely easier to get through because it’s intriguing with each arc.

You want to know more and you start to love the side characters just as much.

Yan Qing and Su Si stole my heart. I loved Shen Zhu and even Yan Zheng and Yu Zikuan were adorable.

The emperor Shi Jingxing and the annoying brother Shi Jingming were just as interesting whilst the villains were honestly mentally ill.

Overall I totally recommend reading this. It’s not your usual jianghu xuanhuan but a rather intricately woven mystery adventure with a sweet love story amidst it.

Best characters, sick plot, best relationship, wicked backstory. Just wild overall, like so good. The plot was so intricate but still understandable(mostly) and I just loved the main characters so much. The character development was so well done and the communication between the two were so clear. I hate misunderstanding and bad communication so this was beautiful. The world building was so cool too, it was unlike anything I’ve ever read.

(2.5⭐) If I can be frank, I have read a more interesting story than this one. Half the book in and I was simply bored, the villain wasn't villaining enough for me and though it was true the character development is great, I do think the best character development falls on Yang Qing, with Su Si just a bit behind (he was hella interesting). There were some funny parts I enjoyed, but for the overall plot, this isn't the gem I sought.
