Krystal writes as USA Today Bestselling Author KL Donn. Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, she has over 50 published books in differing romance genres. She enjoys making her readers cry as they go on a deep journey of love and loss through each book.
Experiencing her own insta-love at 17, Krystal has been with her husband for 18 years and they share 4 beautiful children together.
Fun facts about KL: Perpetual romantic. Coffee addict. Sarcasm lover. Give her an action flick over a romance. But a romance book over action. She’s weird like that. Did she mention coffee addict? Closet shopaholic. Beach lover. Coffee addict, it bears repeating. Again. Husband obsessed. Hers that is, you can keep yours. Mom of 6, well 7 if you count the husband. Oh and 2 of those are a cat & dog, that are confused about their species.
I liked this book better in theory than I did in execution. One, I didn't realize it was only going to be 98 pages long. That was way too short to give the subject matter this author tackles its proper due. Which leads me to my second issue. The doom and gloom of this book was laid on SO thick and for SO long (70 pages) that "I" wanted to drown myself in the bathtub. Sexual abuse. Bullying. It was really just way too much, especially (and I'll say it again) in such a short book.
Which leads me to yet another issue I had. I felt ZERO connection between the hero and heroine. We basically get NO interactions between them until he ends up on her doorstep after he gets out of prison. I didn't believe for ONE second that this girl (who legit should have been taken for a psych eval, in therapy, and on some sort of medication) would just be A-OK with this (not quite all there) hero being all over her.
So yea, this book fell short (see what I did there *lol*) of my expectations. I think had it been about a hundred pages longer and the story fleshed out much much more, it could have been a solid 4-Star read. As it stands, I can't give this one more than 2.
She was no longer my shy neighbor. She wasn’t the abused girl I had rescued. She was my passion. My pain. My everything. In that moment, I became Crux Malcom, man obsessed.
KL Donn is very quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books are so emotional! And STEAMY!!
Farren and Crux are neighbors. They’re 7 years apart in age. When Farren was younger, Crux discovered that she was being sexually abused by her mom’s partner. He went into protective mode and killed the man.
He went to jail and three years later, he’s out and wanting Farren. She’s 17 throughout the book- nothing happens until she’s 18.
This book deals with tough subjects like child abuse, sexual abuse, and suicidal thoughts.
”Why can’t I be free, Crux? I’m always a victim, a target. I don’t want to be.” “I’ll set you free if you let me, Ren. Let me in, and I’ll be your safety.”
I really enjoyed reading this book. Now i’m off to read another KL Donn novel!! 🖤
”Your life, bird, was always meant to collide with mine.”
triggers: child abuse (on page), sexual abuse (on page), suicidal thoughts
safety: virgin heroine celibate hero age gap (17h, 24H) no OM/OW no cheating/sharing HEA 🖤
“The End.” I just read those two words and now wondering what I should do. I have been completely engrossed in this book since I first opened it. Never put it down and probably won’t read anything else until I read it again.
Farren is a sweet shy girl that absolutely breaks your heart. I don’t even feel like she is a character in a book, but a girl I need to find and squeeze with the biggest hug. I hate to say she is broken because she is so much more than that. She has had it rough to say the least. Beaten down but Crux refuses to let her be broken. The warnings are no joke! It was tough to get through her background at times, but it made me feel so much more connected to her. KL Donn has a way with making you feel for her characters like they are your family. Tomorrow I am most definitely going to smile and talk to everyone I come across. You never know the complete agony some are going through and this book reminds you of that.
Crux is obsessed but also the most loving and determined man I have ever read about. He is a fierce protector and loves with his entire heart. A better hero couldn’t have been written. I could feel his pain while he was trying to help Ren. I fell in complete love with him!
Absolutely beautiful and heart wrenching book. Just buy it, read it, keep it on your shelf, and re-read it again! It’s not a full length but the development of characters made it seem like it was. It didn’t feel rushed at all, and it felt complete.
I can’t wait for the other brothers and to hopefully see more of Ferren and Crux!!!
Shy mouse like h being abused by her mother’s boyfriend. H lives next door. He is obsessed with her. He kills the abuser and then goes to jail. When he is out of jail he goes straight to the h. H’s behavior is so cool and casual apart from him being obsessed with the h and beating anyone who touches the h. He is just out of jail but he is very casual and even his brothers. The h was too doormatty and too accepting and easily wooed by the H. Sorry but this was too boring for me. There was no spice.
I know my review is not going to do this book justice. I have been waiting very (im)patiently waiting for this to be released, and I was very, very, very lucky to have been able to win an early copy of this extraordinary book. My heart hurt for Farren, I wanted to take her in my arms and just hold her.
Farren Hallewell has been abused and mistreated for years. The people who were supposed to love and care for her. Because of the abuse she has withdrawn into herself and does not have any friends. Of course, there are some kids at school that love to torment and do things to humiliate her.
Cruz Malcom is a hero in my book. He took matters into his own hands to make sure his bird would be safe. The day he is released he seeks Farren out. He comes to her rescue when a group of kids are bullying her. He steps up to be her protector.
There are some things that comes to light with one of the young men who was tormenting her. Farren steps up and learns to deal with her past. Crux stands beside her through everything. He shows her what it is like to be loved and cared for. He helps her spread her wings and how to live life.
The only thing I wished for in this book, is that we would have been some closure where her mother was concerned. I'm looking forward to see what is in store for Free and Cross.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the first book in the Malcolm Boys series by KL Donn. Crux Malcolm has just been released from prison after serving three years for the murder of Jeffrey Warner. The prosecutor took a bribe, and knowingly presented planted evidence and because of that Crux was released early. Crux killed Jeffrey to protect Farren Hallewell from being sexually abused by him. He’s become obsessed with Farren and now that he’s outta prison he plans on claiming her.
Fair disclosure on triggers: h was sexually abused by her step-father from a young age and describes some graphic memories. It's relayed much later in the book when she is with the H for the first time that she is still a virgin.
h is 7 or 8 years younger than hero. He had a (not creepy) connection to her and was next door or across the street neighbor. When she was 14 or 15 he saw the step-father touching her and later kills stepfather. Hero gets out 3 years later when it's determined that the prosecuter falsified evidence in his trial. Now he's back and is going to claim the nearly 18 year old h.
He totally adores her and only wants to protect her. It was very beautiful to me and I wish it had been longer. The H tells her later in the book that he was never with another woman after he met her. But truly, he wasn't romantically attracted to her until just before he was released and saw a picture of how she'd grown.
This is a beautiful and emotional novella sucked me in from the very first page. Farren Halliwell omg I wanted to crawl in the book and hug her. She’s been through so much at such a young age and she really needed something good in her life. Crux Malcom..love him!! My favorite KL Donn Hero. He was such a protective and possessive Alpha male. He was swoony and amazing! This book is about overcoming abuse, bullying and abandonment. So happy that Farren was so strong at the end. They got the HEA they deserved. Can’t wait for the rest of the Malcolm brothers.
I've been wanting to read this story for so long, ever since the author, K.L. Donn announced the book :) I've been intrigued by it's blurb and now that I get the chance to read this, I'm super happy and excited!!
Yes, this is a story that has possible triggers for some of you guys, but it's not a dark romance story, at least for me it wasn't and if for some of you guys, the possible triggers is hard to come by then proceed with caution if want to read this book because this was an awesome story written by even more awesome author, who actually knows how to portray to her readers, all the emotions, both the good and the bad and I'm guaranteeing that you won't regret reading this, pinky promise :)
Now, I'm being completely honest about this story... I loved Crux's character so much!! I loved his obsessive devotion towards his girl, Farren aka Ren; that's his nickname for her <3, who's also been through hell. Crux saved her and has loved her through absolutely everything and will do undoubtedly do anything for her; to protect her, to always keep her feel safe, loved, cherished and above all, no one messes with what's his and Farren's his ;) I also loved his character in the way that he was with Farren, tender yet at the same time OTT, but I loved it <3 ;)
Jesus, Farren, I felt for her and her brother (NO SPOILERS!) but I will say this, they BOTH go through hell, one more than the other but still are both survivors, strong even if they don't recognize it at the time and at the end, justice was served! :)
I also adored the start of this new series, "Those Malcolm Boys" and I can't wait to see who's story is next and to see our beloved Crux with his woman, Farren aka Ren and see how their lives are going in the future and HOPEFULLY, we'll see MAYBE a bundle of joy in their lives?? I really hope so! Because both Crux and his girl deserve that ultimate happiness in their lives; the light that would obliterate all the dark spots that had been rooted in their souls; but don't get me wrong guys, these two do get their happy ending here. This is just a little fantasy of mine that will HOPEFULLY COME TRUE ;)
This author blows me away with her writing style. The intends subject matter is phenomenally written. She takes sensitive subject matter and doesn’t rush or gloss over the gritty nature of the matter. Crux and Farren are fantastic together. Crux is a billionaire bad boy that gets arrested for murder protecting Farren. But there is a price to pay for protecting the girl-prison time. He gets out after three years on a technicality and the first thing he does is drive to see Farren.
Farren still has nightmares from the time she was in her stepfather’s clutches. Crux soothes the worst of them. It seems to be a family affair when it comes to abuse. Farren and Crux’s relationship starts out and comfort and ends in them being lovers. I can’t wait for the other two brothers to get there stories!!
Wow! KL Donn has done it again!! She writes stories that make you laugh and cry and this book made me cry much more than I laughed. Without going into too much detail, Farren (the heroine)...absolutely broke me completely. My heart literally shattered for her. I can't pinpoint to one thing I like or love about this book, I love it entirely!! As with most of KL's stories, she gets a good grip on your emotions and doesn't really let go until you see that the characters get a HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happily for now) type of ending. I honestly think that this is one of KL's most tragically written stories however like with all her previous stories, it ends beautifully.
This was a very different read than the usual KL read. I really loved the characterization and the plot and the in depth research about a sensitive subject that may not be easily be able to establish with readers, however, KL did it beautifully.
The alpha is out of this world obsessed in the best way a girl can ask for. His intensity was something so strong I needed to breathe!! The heroine and her circumstances and how she preserves through them is just as beautiful as the love story within.
"I feel it, bird. I feel your dying soul. Your lack of will. And I'll fight for it. For you." -Crux Malcolm
Oh my, how you ever been so swept up into a story it's like you feel what's happening. Every hurt, every joy, every triumph? That's what Obsessive Love did to me. This book is like an addiction once you start it you won't be able to stop. And it'll wrap you in it's strong but brutal arms and you'll love every minute of it! I'm still recovering from the best book hangover ever. OA will have you wondering if you could get your hands on your own Malcolm boy lol it's that good.
KUDOS to K.L Donn for conquering SEVERAL taboo subjects with Obsessive Addiction. The protectiveness of Crux for Farren is off the charts sweet. This story may NOT be for everyone and it touches on some extremely sensitive topics, but it is done so in such a healing way I felt the relief after everything is sorted.. Well Done.
Wow! I am flabbergasted with this author, it's my first time reading her work, and I can honestly say that book will stay with me forever. Characters are well developed and well written, amazing work Miss KL Donn, 5 stars.
I was completely engrossed in this book. Farren is a sweet and shy character which will break your heart. She has endured years of abuse but one night Crux comes to her rescue and becomes her saviour. Crux is such a heartwarming hero, who is utterly in love with Farren.
Very hot, steamy insta-love YA romance. Crux is a sexy alpha who finds his obsession & wins her love. Very moving love story, even though it’s a quicker read.
Still reading If you take out the "romance," it's almost like an overly dramatic after-school special. Its tone is too young for me, even if male MC is 24-25yo. Female MC is way too OTT needy, & male MC seemed way too weird & creepy, lusting after an 11+yo. He says it wasn’t about sex until now, but there was no sudden change in emotion or realisation that his feelings had changed, that I could discern. It's strange that Farren isn't body conscious due to her upbringing & crush on Crux, at least initially anyway. And why didn't he talk to his brothers/police about his suspicions before leaving for college so they could look out for Farren or confront the step-dad. The whole thing is unrealistic - the dialogue, the one-dimensional characters & their reactions, & the way the characters can just magically discard trauma & baggage. If it was that easy, there wouldn't be: cycles of abuse where victims become the abusers; no-one would take their own life or abuse themselves or become drug addicts due to desperately trying to find ways to forget etc. NB: Any kind of abusive behaviour isn't genetic, & it’s irresponsible to even suggest it. Sadly, a victim often becomes a perpetrator, which becomes an extremely difficult cycle to break running through families generation after generation, Learnt coping NOT genetic. Unless the suggestion is that homo sapian as a species are predisposed to aggressive abusive behaviour?
This book....wow. I don't think I could ever, ever write a review to do this book justice. My emotions are all over the place right now...so please, bear with me here.
***May contain spoilers ahead...
The beginning of this book starts with Crux getting out of prison on a technology after serving a few years for killing the man who sexually abused Farren "Ren". She is 17, still in school and getting bullied. As soon as Crux is free, he goes to her school to watch her. He sees her getting bullied/touched by her abusers nephew and stops it. From that point on, he is her protector, her anchor and her salvation. He sees no one but her and he fights to help Ren feel a sense of normalcy and helps her battle her nightmares.
Now, there's obviously a lot more to the story but I won't go into any more detail because you just need to experience this book yourself. There are some definite triggers but no rape committed, just flashbacks and nightmares of step dad touching the heroine (which is still a horrible thing). There are no OM/OW, no cheating. I believe Crux has been celebate since meeting Ren.
I very much enjoy this author and in my opinion, this is her best book yet. Which is really saying something since all of her books are amazing. Great HEA ending.
Great job KL Donn!!! I look forward to more from you.
“I’ll set you free if you let me, Ren. Let me in, and I’ll be your safety.”
Crux has assigned himself as Farren’s protector since she was a young child. He saw the look in her eyes every time he was near her. Something was going on in her home and it wasn’t good. It wasn’t until he came home for a visit then he saw through her window how right he was, he vows that her torment stopped that night. He spends the next 3 years locked away for his crimes, should of been longer but it gets overturned. When he comes home to Farren he finds her with those sad fearful eyes still. Her tormentor has been changed but it’s still there. After threatening her new tormentor Crux is left in disbelief. The whole family is sick! Now with a new mission and purpose he sets out to protect not one but two innocent people from their tormentors. But when Farren decides to stand up for herself can Crux let her? Can he give up control and just be with her or is his obsessive addiction to be in control going to cost him everything?
I can already tell that I’m going to be obsessed with this series!! Crux is the perfectly obsessed, protective , Alpha male! Yum!! He did what he felt needed to be done to protect Farren, he killed her demon. Now that he is out of prison he only wants to do what he can to protect and keep his little bird safe and happy for the rest of her life. Farren was abused in one of the worst ways but her protector stopped that, and now that he is out there is a pull that she cannot deny. And she wants to see where giving in will take her. This book is amazing and definitely tugs at the heart strings. You can’t help but want things to work out for Farren for her to get everything she never knew she could have. Boy does Crux deliver best boyfriend ever!! Definitely one click this one!!!
Absolutely loved this story. It's a powerful story about two people who meet, one is saved from an awful situation and the other is the bad boy billionaire hero. Farren might be young but her soul matches Crux Malcolm the sexy bad boy who will win her heart. Their love story is not easy, it's dark, ugly, beautiful and ever lasting. KL Donn has added another amazing story to her collection. I personally cant wait for Crew and Cross's stories. I mean you know these characters will be sexy alphas just based on their names. Love it!! Happy Reading!!!
Reading this story really gets to you how farren suffered by the many people around her. Be it her abuser or her absent minded mother or the kids at school tormenting her. Farren suffered and only one man sought out and demanded to destroy her pain. Crux went above and beyond for his little bird. Be it to avenge her as a child with no voice or as a lover set on vengeance once she became an adult. Always in the shadows watching and waiting to be her comfort when she needed it. It was a brilliant read, although sad that farren had to suffer so.
KL Donn has outdone herself in this book. Crux would do any thing for his little bird. But can be put her back together again. She has suffered unbelievable atrocities. But she has always had him. I until he was forced to go away. But he's back! Will they survive the evil? Will they cave to the addiction? Must read this beautiful story! Can't wait for the next book.
This book took my emotions on a rollercoaster. Ren shattered my heart with all that she went through. How strong she became thru the book with the help of Crux was amazing. I'm glad that Crux did everything in his power to make sure Ren got the justice and the family she deserved. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book for this series of the Malcolm brother's.
