A child taken during the night, a father with secrets, and a good friend in need of help are just the beginning of Detective Jim North’s next case. But from the moment Jim begins his investigation, he is forced to choose between following the law and helping a friend.

James Hunt's passion for writing began at an early age. While his journal of yesteryear may never be the work of great fiction, he's been working hard every day since then to bring pages to life. James has well over a decade of writing under his belt, but his professional career in literature didn't take off until 2014.
James currently lives in Orlando, FL and when he's not pounding away at the keyboard you can find him at the theater or somewhere outside enjoying the beautiful Florida weather.
The duo is back once again. Right or wrong, true or false, one or two or all three, truth well out. Its all about the saving the kids. The buggy man will always lose.
This is another book on which I feel conflicted but the resolution of the issues allow a 4.
The final book in the North & Martin series, this starts in what I feel is a rocky premise: Kerry’s bad decision in a previous book. There are other parts of this story that bother me, but the resolution of the kidnapping of the son of Jim’s former foster brother and other issues related to it made the final outcome more positive.
The other key character in this story was Cutter, a small but inherently evil man.
P.S. I wish editors caught more grammatical and punctuation errors and resolved incompatibility in verb agreement.
Amateurish and it just got worse and worse as it neared the end.
My wife and I read this book at the same time. When I got to 85% and could not take any more she was still at the beginning. Having been a policeman in my youth, this book was unbelievable at every turn. How the author thinks the book depicts police department procedure is beyond my comprehension. The things going on in this story are beyond belief. No policeman/woman is this stupid to get into the situations they did, and then the so called planning of how to get out of the major Don's control. All I can say is it is like an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond & can only be described as "holy crap". It screams of a lack of research and editing by someone with novel know how. Please forgive my attempt at alliteration. This book is as bad as my grammar. My wonderful wife will form her own opinion and I will include it without my editing. The wife gives it 5 stars stating it is a great read. Since she read the entire book her rating stands. The End.
James Hunts books before. He does have a way with words. A lot of descriptions. Maybe a little too much. This story is not for the faint of heart. Know when you go into this, it's not rainbows and unicorns. Most of us know we live pretty good lives. I don't think we really want to know about the dark side of some people's lives. James Hunt did a very good job of giving us the sheriff side of life, without being too extreme. Those story is real. It's happening now, everywhere. He did a good job of showing us, letting us see and feel his words. At least in a book everyone (mostly) has HEA. If this is something you would be interested in, then I think James books are the ones to read.
I'm not quite done (I'm not sure why GR is listing this as completed on Saturday) but I'll finish today. This was another kindle freebie. Started off all right. It is 5th in a series, and there are a lot of references to what probably happened in book 4 especially, and character development from earlier books. But there's enough here that you don't NEED to know these things, you're just missing the details. However: dialogue is not smooth, at times characters say things pretty out-of-character just so that information can get included. The action and plot movement feel pretty forced. (I mean, the whole story is 'off the books' and yet there is never a question of using said 'books' when needed.) And, about halfway through, I started noticing a lot of editing 'misses'. Were they there before, and I just hadn't noticed? Or did the editor just get tired of reading this one? Queue, when it should have been cue. Repetition instead of reputation. Sentences that weren't quite right, and seemed like a previous rendition had left words behind. Anyway, I'll finish because I'm that close. But not great. Very rough and forced.
Sometimes favorite authors fall into a quagmire of creating unbelievable situations for their main characters and this story certainly falls into that category. While I enjoyed the first book in the series, this one lacked the believability and honesty of the other. Both main characters deserve to be arrested and jailed over their actions and yet, they emerge unscathed from their wrong choices. Unfortunately it dilutes the honesty and likability of both the characters and the storyteller. I won't be hunting down any other tales in this series.
First, I am shocked at the number of grammatical errors in this book - especially for a writer who has been writing this long. I felt that really detracted from the book and it reflects in my rating. This book also has a rather complex plot that depends upon a number of things - rather hard to truly believe that they all happen to work out just right. That said, it does have some good police work, dialogue and decent character development. While not a total waste of time, I would not rush out to read this book anytime soon! I think it might also help if you read this particular 5 book series in order - something I did not do!!!
I am listening to these out of order, with this one it would have been better to have listened to it before the later ones - my fault. It just removes a little of the suspense.
This story was so full of angst and difficult decisions - it wasn't just a normal police procedural but all the characters had such depth to them and anguish. Loved learning more about the lieutenant.
As for the narration, I could listen to Cheryl May narrate a phone book she would put such emotion into it. I just loved the narration she really brought the emotion to life.
I’ve read the 3 previous books in the series, and it’s been a wonderful journey watching these characters grow. I’m amazed at how intricate the plots are but they’re easy to follow. The characters have so many layers to them. I can’t stress enough that the reader should read the first books to get the full impact of who these characters are. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
Oh boy, this was a tense one! Indeed after about chapter 4, I had to skip to the end I was getting so worried and anxious. Really great pacing, loves the story, and of course love the characters, I have to admit this one was a little too stressful for me. Well I appreciate all of the drama that the two detectives are dealing with, I have to say I hope that this signals the end of some of that and that the next books will just focus more on the cases.
Intense and gripping story with interesting dialogue and good interaction. Lots of twists and turns with plenty of drama thrown in. Compelling and complex characters in this book. Grabs you from the first page. Good read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Pieces of our Past by James Hunt is a fantastic book to read. This is book number five in this fantastic series that I have been hooked on since the very beginning and I can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about mysteries, horror and suspense.

Pieces Of Our Past The Riveting Kidnapping Mystery A North & Martin Mystery
I read all 5 of these Books and all were page turner books. I would encourage every one to read them. All the stories were very good. I will tell all my family and friends that love to read to read them. Excellent Books
Big waste of time. The poor editing showed a lack of care by the 'publisher', and if they felt it wasn't worth time to proofread/edit properly, they should expect readers to be critical.
Many other reviewers pointed out the huge flaws in police procedure, dialogue, filler, etc. and I agree with all of them.
This one is really focusing around Jim and Kerry especially individually. The abduction mysteries keep a person intrigued as things get in depth as you turn the pages. Mysteries have really become my go to also because it picks the brain too. But also getting a personal insight keeps it fresh.
It was good to read about Jim and Kerry again. It was also good to have lose ends from the previous book tied up. Looking forward to the next North and Martin book.
North and Martin return in this very tense, suspenseful story. They face a powerful and evil enemy in this well written book. Absolute power that corrupts absolutely describes Cutter, the villain who is a terrifying puppet master.
What a great series. The way it ended leaves me hope there will be more. The writer is able to put you in the situations and make you feel your part of it all. Waiting for more!
Excellent, a gripping story of when one is missing. You have a job and those guidelines or friendship where does one draw that line that they will understand. When they are living on Hope. Well done. Given audio for my voluntary review
Excellent story, with breathtaking scenarios and surprising ending. Unusual plot, and subject, but realistic. Warning, foul language, but not overabundant.
It will keep the reader fascinated with each character and the plot will hold their attention right to the end. Would recommend this book to the ardent mystery reader. Great job by the author.
Riveting read, I read this book from start to end. Couldn't bear to lay it down at mealtime much to my parents dismay!!! However once I finished my review, I know he shall want to pick up and enjoy the storyline as I've done.
The editing on this book was so poor! Whole passages dissolved into nonsense. I've read this whole series and by the end the stories all seemed the same & formulaic.
Never know what the next page or chapter might bring.
Two dedicated detectives with experience with experience, knowledge, and the desire to keep the criminals from destroying the city and people that make it up.
The storyline itself is good, but there are many errors and poor writing choices that make it choppy and hard to really get into. I recommend a better editor next time and some work on synonyms so there's not so much repetition in word choices.
Two off beat, rogue detectives that work well together fighting corruption. As much as I enjoy these easy to read stories sometimes they seem a bit of a stretch to believe. I suppose it's crime fighting at is best . by
James Hunt is an excellent writer. I have read several of his books now and they have all been good. Sometimes I'm up at one or two in the morning reading his book. So keep up the great work. Many thanks.
There is much in here that works well especially having two plot lines running concurrently. But there is a section towards the end that is crying out for accurate proof reading and rather a few loose ends around the concluding scene at the marina.
