Marina Abramović has truly pioneered performance as a visual art form. Her work – notorious for its feats of endurance, pain and intense physical encounter – has pushed the boundaries of contemporary art and cemented her reputation as one of the most significant artists of the past 50 years. This book brings her complete practice together into one concise and essential volume.
Finally getting around to this biography/retrospective, and Abramovic’s own “walk through walls.” This is a brilliant introduction to her work or a companion piece for the super fans (me); it includes beautiful, high quality photos of her performance pieces, many of which I’d not seen before, and a linear, incisive analysis of her work. To me, she’s one of our greatest living artists - certainly one of our most provocative - and this is worthy of her work.
This is a helpful, clear and succinct biography of one of the most important contemporary artists, including how her powerful and fearless performances have evolved over time. It covers her most important works such as the artist is present and her partnership, both art and romantic, with fellow performer Ulay.
Ossian Ward knows her work well and writes clearly about it. I recommend this as an accessible, illustrated, look at Abramovic and her work - and a book that can be read in one sitting.
