A picture book about being kind to friends and strangers alike.
Ash and Pudd take care of everyone in the woods, from their furry and feathered friends to the shivering trees. But then one day, a strange new creature appears in the forest. Could it be a new friend?
This is so sweet and gentle, cozy yet inspiring. The illustrations are charming and reminded me a bit of Elsa Beskow. I loved it! Wonderful to see a story about wee folk featuring boy characters who are strong yet compassionate. I hope we will get a story about Ash and Pudd for every season! Vidya's excellent review says everything I would wish to say about it, so I will just refer you to that: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Ash and Pud, two little gnomes or tomte-like creatures, were the caretakers of all of the forest residents, from squirrels to trees, making sure everyone had enough to eat, and dispensing the knitted caps and scarves they made, in their tiny home. Discovering a massive and unfamiliar creature in the forest one day, the brothers were frightened at first, before realizing that they had a duty to this stranger as well...
Although not quite the right season for reading this, I am glad that The Little Forest Keepers, enthusiastically recommended to me by my friend Kathryn, finally became available at the library! I enjoy stories featuring tomte, or tomte-adjacent beings, and this was no exception. With a simple but sweet story, and cozy artwork that draws the reader in, I think this is a picture book that will please both young fairy-tale lovers and those who enjoy reading about woodland creatures. It's a lovely winter tale, suitable for younger picture-book audiences in the mood for gentle, reassuring fare.
While I picked this book up for my younger child, I read it before I could hand it to him. I LOVED it. Sometimes we get so caught up in complex story telling that we forget the charm that lies in simple story telling.
This is a story of two brothers, Ash and Pudd, who are kind and compassionate. Honestly, they reminded me of my own boys. They are the forest keepers and they take their job very seriously. While this is a book for children, there is a lesson for all of us - always choose kindness!
In a world that thrives on competition and proving to others that you are the best, we keep telling the boys that being kind, looking out for each other, stopping every now and then to take in the beauty and just being honest is very important. These are traits that we hope they imbibe and carry with them.
Do pick this beautiful book up - even if you just spend time looking at the illustrations, it is worth your while.
My 4yo son LOVED this book. As soon as we were done he asked if we could read it again. A sweet story about two brothers who take care of their forest friends with the upcoming snow storm. Not a lot of text but between text and illustrations, story is clearly told.
The jacket of this book reads “This sweet story about kindness and generosity is as cozy as a mug of hot chocolate on a winter’s day.” That is a good summary! A simple and gentle book. I like that it is two brothers who are portrayed as so nurturing. (I feel like brothers are usually mostly portrayed as rough and teasing in books, it is refreshing to see something different). The illustrations are sweet and, looking at them, I felt inspired to get out my watercolours myself! I want to move into in Ash and Pud’s stump home! Also, as a knitter myself, I was happy to see knitting featured in the book! 🙂 I haven’t read this to children yet, but I think they will enjoy it very much.
