Innovative wild game, fish, and fowl recipes for modern-day Providers: those who hunt, garden, cook, and live off the land
In our modern ways of cooking and eating, we’ve gotten out of touch with Mother Nature. Those who hunt, fish, and enjoy wild game know that we should always respect and cherish our food and where it comes from.
For hunter/chef Chad Belding and MMA star Chad Mendes, hunting and ethical farming are crucial ways to reinforce our connection to nature. In The Provider Cookbook, Belding and Mendes share recipes and stories to celebrate this way of life and keep it alive for generations to come. Here you’ll find everything from comfort-food classics to more refined cuisine, including:
They also share tips for properly storing food, plus recipes for domestic meats and their favorite vegetable sides and sauces. Accompanied by gorgeous food and landscape photography, the recipes and stories in The Provider Cookbook will take you on a journey from field and farm to table.
The Provider Cookbook by Chad Belding and Chad Mendes, is a fantastic cookbook featuring recipes for eating wild game and living off the land. Besides a wide selection of fish and game recipes that are uncomplicated to make, there are also recipes for domestic meats, sides and sauces, and even a few cocktails to enjoy after the hunt that will enhance the whole experience of eating this kind of cuisine. Examining every recipe in this book, by far, most sound positively delicious, full of flavor., and very easy to prepare. A huge asset to my enjoyment of this cookbook, is the incredible food photography! The book is loaded with beautiful photography, not only of the food recipes, but includes exquisite photographs of wildlife and environment.
Contents for recipes include chapters on : Big Game Upland Game Birds Waterfowl Fish and Shellfish Domestic Meats Sides and Sauces Cocktails
Some of the recipes I personally would like to try are: Spiced Bison Meatballs, Antelope Backstrap Roulade, Ground Elk Stuffed Peppers, Mama Cobb's Deer-Stuffed Cabbage, Wild Turkey Pot Pie, Grammy's Messy Crab, Crab Cakes, Seared Tuna Medallions, Candied Pork Chops, Chunky Artichoke Salsa....just to name a few!
Overall, this is a beautiful cookbook for those who eat what they hunt, and live off the land out of necessity or preference. That being said, I'm sure many meats, fowl, and fish could be swapped out if unavailable.
5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I proudly recommend this fine publication.
My thanks to #NetGalley and the Publisher, #BenBellaBooks for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are my own.
More than simply recipes, this book is about providing food for your family, ethical hunting, respect for nature and wildlife and the connection to land. Amongst the many topics are equipment, sausage grinding and gardening. Additionally, the authors write anecdotal hunting stories and about enjoying time in the outdoors.
My dad was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and provided our family with moose, elk, deer, grouse, geese and ducks, important where food was (and is) incredibly expensive and game plentiful. Not only that but man, was it ever delicious! He also supplied us with fish. Winters on our farm were at least six months long with deep snow and -40C temperatures. So, this book really resonates with me.
When reading and reviewing cookbooks I always make a few recipes. Not as easy this time without easy access to wild game but did manage to make Wild Game Stroganoff with elk which was very tasty. The Spicy Bison Meatballs look excellent and will make with whatever ground meat I can get my hands on. I really enjoy wild boar and the Wild Board Sausage and Goat Cheese Pasta looks wonderful. So does Thai Basil Ground Elk (Thai + Elk = Delectable!). I have never had wild turkey and would make the Wild Turkey Pot Pie in a heartbeat. I bet the Pulled goose BBQ Sandwiches are amazing! Same with the Pan-Fried Duck. I will definitely make Brian's Coconut Curry Halibut and Cioppino. The thing is, even if you don't have wild game on hand, just substitute.
The chapter on domestic meats is appealing as well. We made the Candied Pork Chops except we have no smoker.but it was still very good. You can tell just by reading the ingredients. There is even a chapter on sides and sauces.
You needn't hunt to enjoy this book, especially the recipes.
My sincere thank you to BenBella Books and NetGalley for the privilege of reading and salivating over this excellent book!
What a fantastic cookbook! The two Chad’s serve up some yummy looking game recipes!
What did I like? The book follows two hunters and their recipes for game. Delicious looking venison recipes and amazing pictures! This is a great book for the hunter in your family. I loved the serving dishes… very unique looking. The book has cooking tips and butchering help too. It also gives some hunting tips along with hunting pictures.
Would I recommend or buy? This would have been a great book for my dad. He was a huge hunter and always butchered his own meat. I wish that they’d have added some canned recipes. Good hunters always prepare meat to save. Maybe a book for the future guys. Otherwise loved it!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review. Copy I received was read on a tiny screen so I may have not been able to read cover to cover. Still enjoyed it!
Great book! I'm going to get one for dad, he loves hunting and preparing his food. This book has lots of good information about hunting and how to prepare wild meat. I personally don't eat wild meat but I grew up with my dad preparing it for his friends so I know he would love to try these recipes. The photos are great and the food look very appetizing. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Overall, an excellent cookbook, for recipes and outdoor stories. Recipes are straightforward and do contain some suggestions to use the author's products (or your own choice). It would be a little more helpful if the type of rub or spice mix were described to give a sense of the flavor profile of the recipe in these cases.
The choice of using "reverse plate" printing does make reading some recipes difficult. For the intended audience the book seems a good choice.
This cookbook is full of beautiful meals just waiting to be prepared. I cannot wait to get this out to my dad's and get some game ready for some hearty suppers. The pictures and stories in this book are so amazing and make it so much fun to read and look thru.
Thank you for the opportunity to win this book thru a Goodreads giveaway.
Beautiful book filled with stories and recipes like no other. How to cook everything from goose to bear and then some! Loved the pictures, the style, and the gourmet, healthy recipes in this lovely book. A keeper and a treasure!
