Work with Me

Rate this book
She’s built a firewall around her heart. He’s determined to crack the code.

Alicia’s first gig for her new tech consulting business is a make-or-break opportunity, and she’s determined to make it. But when she strides into the kickoff meeting to show them who’s the (girl) boss, she’s shocked to find the guy she just asked out for coffee in the power seat. Yeah, the one with the sexy scruff, the bottomless brown eyes, and the gentle hands. He turned her down, and now he’s turned up in her meeting. Awkward.

Jackson’s seeing red, and it’s not only Alicia’s stilettos. Now a consultant’s in charge of what used to be his project, pouring salt in the wound of his exile from San Francisco to Austin. How is Jackson supposed to redeem himself? And why is he obsessing over unbuttoning buttoned-up Alicia?

Alicia’s not about to endanger her business by kissing a coworker. Jackson can’t afford another screw-up. They can’t be together, but working together means they can’t be apart.

Work with Me is a steamy, slow-burn, opposites-attract romantic comedy featuring a straitlaced single mom, a tech genius who hides a secret under a playboy exterior, and way too much tequila. Set in up-and-coming Austin, it’s the first book in the Synergy Software series.

A strong start to a workplace romance series by a new to me indie author that features a female coder brought in to help get a project under control and the playboy coder all star who needs her help to become a better leader.

This was a fun, forbidden romance with a single mom, great Steminist rep set in Texas. There's spice, emotional depth and lots of banter between the two leads. It was also great on audio narrated by Stephanie Kay and Julio Maxwell.

Many thanks to Homecooked Books for an early ALC in exchange for my honest review! I look forward to reading more in this series and definitely recommend for fans of Susannah Nix and Ali Hazelwood.

I grabbed this one while it was free on Amazon and it was a pretty good read. The characters didn't have a ton of depth but they were still interesting to read about.

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

Since becoming an audiobook junkie a couple of years ago, I am all about jumping feet first into just about any promotion, especially one where it’s a new-to-me author and/or narrator. Work With Me gave me a new author and narrator to experience! :) I’ve listened to Stephanie Kay before, but Julio Maxwell was new for me. I really enjoyed them both and having them in my ears for approximately 9 hours was no hardship! #winning

Michelle McCraw was a new-to-me author with this story and although it did not blow my mind, I was entertained, but also not <<< I know, weird, but here we are LOL Not gonna lie, there’s very little depth to the story and both Alicia and Jackson were just characters to me. I didn’t feel their story. I never imagined myself in their world. However, I didn’t dislike them, nor did I dislike the world the author created. UGH, this is me being weird LOL I just enjoy stories more when I want to be inside the world I’m reading/listening to and this time I just didn’t. Let’s move on…

There’s only one other thing I want to bring up and that’s about secondary characters. Can someone please explain to me the purpose of Cooper? He’s not just a secondary character hanging out to the side, he is an influencing character and I am stupefied at just about every choice the author made for him. I am sure that I will understand him better when I get to his book, but he was toxic in this one and unfortunately, he was so toxic that it kinda took some of the entertainment away from the story for me and there were times I wanted to just DNF. Dear authors, stop doing this! LOL You want the focus of the reader on your main characters, but you add a secondary character that sucks all the air out of the story so now the main characters and the story suffer!! WHY? Don’t do that! <<< that’s me begging LOL

Big picture >>> I do not not like this author’s style so I will probably garb another story if it comes my way. I’m a solid 3 stars overall but it should be noted that it’s because I’m combining narration and story that it gets a solid 3 stars. Do with that information what you will! :)

My rating might be a little harsh, but so much of this just didn’t work for me. To be fair, the first 40% was well done. But then I had to force myself to finish this over several days because I didn’t want to quit.

What I hated:
1) Cooper - he was a supporting character, but he was a primary reason Jackson felt he wasn’t good enough and I hated him. His threat to make sure Alicia doesn’t ever work again because of her relationship with Jackson? He’s a villain and an asshole…even though it’s clear he’s going to be the star of a sequel.
2) Jackson has ADHD and it was handled well for a while, but then his insight into helping Alicia’s nephew after one meeting seemed off. There was just so much about their interactions that felt forced in order to move the story forward.
3) Alicia needs this job to work in order for her business to succeed. So what does she do? Kiss him at a party with a coworker in the other room. Flirt at work. Leave work with him regularly to spend time together. But then she’s shocked that coworkers guessed they were together? She went from being intelligent, strong and hard working to a ditzy debbie downer.
4) What was the purpose of mentioning her ex Rick? To show how Jackson is more supportive? To say she is wanted and make Jackson insecure? He just kept popping in and it was annoying more than anything.

Overall it started strong and I was excited about it, but it just fell apart half way through. And I also hate epilogues that serve a dual purpose of setting up the next story in the series…I’d be more inclined to read the next one if I liked the writing and characters, not because of a few paragraphs of fake intrigue.

DNF'd at 67 percent.

Enemies to lovers can be tricky if the turnaround is not perfectly paced, and it was not--at all--in this book. Part of the problem was the techy-ness of the plot, I think. But the turnaround basically came down to:

Alicia: "You're a really good coder, Jackson. You should believe in yourself."
Jackson: "You think I'm a good coder? Wow, I should believe in myself. And I'm falling in love with you."

Okay, it might be slightly more nuanced then that, but not much more. Plus, there was the whole workplace thing; 'We can't, because I'm your boss, but let's skirt around the edges' crap. I wasn't even willing to hold out until the steamy parts, if that doesn't tell you how disappointed I am.

An enemies to lovers story that didn’t have as much toxic energy as most do. I loved the ADHD additions and especially Noah.

💻 Double meet-cute

🏢 Forbidden romance

This is an absolute delight from start to finish, especially if you're familiar with the programming and Agile working environment. The author has clearly either worked in this field, or really done her research as it was incredibly engaging for someone who works in a tech space.

Julio's comedic timing and inflections are spot-on, making his narration a joy to listen to. Stefanie Kay is equally impressive as Alicia Weber, bringing a sweet yet strong and sultry vibe to her character. Together, they bring Alicia and Jackson to life in a way that feels both authentic and utterly captivating.

The double meet-cute/surprise meet-again cute is a charming touch that immediately drew me into the story. The workplace romance plot set in the business/tech world feels fresh and relatable. The rivals-to-lovers dynamic between Alicia and Jackson is perfectly executed, with fantastic banter that had me grinning ear to ear.

Both main characters are not just hot but also incredibly sweet. Julio Maxwell nails Jackson's character, making him smart, sexy, and smitten, with just the right amount of uncertainty. The beautifully intimate conversations and details between them add depth to their relationship, making it all the more satisfying when they finally give in to their feelings.

I was thrilled with the supportive neurodiversity representation in the book. Jackson's support for Alicia and Noah is heartwarming and adds a layer of authenticity and kindness to his character. The way the story handles Noah's and Jackson's neurodiversity is what I really wish I had as a child/teen.

All in all, "Work with Me" is a must-read for anyone who loves a well-crafted workplace romance with smart, sexy banter and heartfelt moments. I devoured this book and couldn't get enough of Alicia and Jackson's story. Highly recommend!

3.5 ⭐️

Work With Me was the first book I have read by Michelle McCraw. It was an enjoyable and entertaining slow burn read. It was also a light hearted, laugh out loud romantic comedy story. I liked the main characters, Alicia and Jackson. Alicia was a strong female lead and Jackson the genius sexy charmer. But, there was more than to him than his playboy exterior.

Typically I do not favor the enemies to lovers trope, but in McCraw’s rom com she set the undeniable chemistry between Alicia and Jackson straight away. As they learned of their Synergy Workplace roles and as the story evolved, they forged through all the complexities of their work relationship turned lover relationship.

I was drawn to this book not only because Michelle McCraw was a new author to me, but also because I liked the books synopsis. It had a unique work plot about two rival programmers in the tech workplace. This was a storyline I hadn’t read and therefore peaked my interest in addition to the relatively high rating. Even more was the steamy romance moments that offset the frustration and witty banter between Alicia and Jackson. It made the chemistry between them even more desirable.

In short, I really liked Michelle McCraw’s writing style. It’s light and easy with likable and relatable characters. Although it was a slow burn, it was witty and entertaining. (Audio)

*Stefanie Kay and Julio Maxwell did a fabulous job narrating this book.

4.5 Stars! So much fun!

Thanks to the author, Michelle McCraw, and the team at HomeCooked Books for providing me with an advanced audio review copy of this book. All opinions provided in this review are my own.

Work With Me starts with our MCs meeting out on the streets of Austin, Texas, during a hailstorm. After Jackson helps Alicia out when she gets injured, they seem to have an instant connection and Alicia asks him out. When he refuses her offer of coffee (which is explained later in the story), they both expect to never see each other again. This is until they see each other later on and realise they are both working for the same company, the very company that Jackson is a partial owner of. Alicia is a software coding consultant and has been hired by Jackson's business partner to get their latest project back on track. Jackson seems cold toward Alicia and they end up butting heads during their time working the project, but their chemistry continues to grow. Jackson’s business partner has a strict no-fraternisation policy after some disaster in the past. So, their budding romance has a lot of huddles to get through.

This was so fun to read, and the characters were very charming. They both had personal turmoil and office struggles to overcome. I also loved the brief, but still there, ADHD rep that was in the book. Overall, it was aa enjoyable listen!

The narration kept me hooked from page 1 all the way through. Narrated by Julio Maxwell and Stefanie Kay, they were both excellent. They portrayed the characters well, and helped bring them and the story to life. I highly recommend!

What I’m Starry-Eyed Overs:
🤩 I love a double meet-cute/surprise meet-again cute!!
🤩 Captivating from the start--workplace romance plot in the business/tech world.
🤩 The rivals-to-lovers feels and banter are fantastic.
🤩 These two MCs are so hot but also sweet.
🤩 I’m so satisfied with the narration (and I have all the s-alliteration reasons to prove it). Stefanie Kay makes a great Alicia Weber—sweet but strong and sultry too. Julio Maxwell is the perfect Jackson—smart, sexy, and smitten, with a hint of unsure in all of it.
🤩 Beautifully intimate conversations and details. ❤️‍
🤩 Hand massages. Neck massages. The touching!
🤩 When I got my wish for some sneaking around!!
🤩 Supportive neurodiversity representation. The way it gives us a look into how supportive Jackson is to Alicia and Noah.

What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 Cooper, I just don’t like him. Does he get a story? I’ll really need it to be like a redemption trope with lots of character development/improvement because I’m not a fan of him.
💫 I feel like it’s Cooper’s fault that I don’t like Jackson as much as I’d like.

Work With Me was a definite case of “it’s not you, it’s me.” In theory I should’ve loved this book, but we just didn’t click.

Alicia is a newly hired consultant at a tech firm, but instead of welcoming her with open arms, team leader Jackson would rather not have her there at all. The two seem to be unable to work together without getting super annoyed by each other.. all that annoyance is bound to tip into something else, but Jackson is only in town for a short period of time and Alicia has a million other things on her mind than fall for her handsome boss.

I love myself a good workplace forbidden romance, and throw in enemy- to- lover and you have my whole attention. I wish I would’ve loved this story, but the characters just seemed so boring to me. There was no depth, no chemistry.. not really anything I liked. I didn’t like the tech and coding talk, which is my own fault since that’s the workplace of the story.

Jackson’s business partner and best friend (??) Cooper was the worst person ever. It was surprising that he didn’t turn out to be the villain of this story, because how rude he comes across. Why would Jackson let him talk like this?! If they’re partners, why is Jackson not acting like this is also his company?! I was so appalled by Cooper, I will definitely not be reading his story.

I really enjoyed Jackson and Alicia's story , though I'm not familiar with coding the story line was smooth and more about them , so I was able to enjoy the slow romance brewing within the friendship they made ,I liked both of their personality's and liked that the topic of a Adult with ADHD was brought up , you don't see that mentioned much in books and it is a relatable topic to many.

I almost wasn’t going to log this book because I wasn’t sure I could get into it. The first few chapters were too tech savvy for me, but I’m glad I stuck it out. I liked the build up from sort of enemies, to cooperative coworkers, to friends, to romantic interest. And when things got complicated, the guy groveled for weeks, and wasn’t forgiven right away.

I couldn't put this down! I was rooting for Jackson and Alicia from the beginning, and the roadblocks they encounter kept me guessing until the end. Jackson is the cinnamon roll hero I go weak over, and it was incredibly refreshing to read a strong, stoic heroine like Alicia and watch them both melt for each other. Workplace romance is not always my favorite genre, but this book has completely changed my mind!! Can't wait to see what's next from Michelle McCraw.

I got this book as a Christmas present. I was hooked from the very first chapter. I loved the characters especially Alicia. My hubby works in the industry that the novel is based on. He never told me how exciting it can be. I can't wait to read the next book in this Synergy series. Just have to order it from the US.

Work With Me kicks off the Synergy Office Romance series and is the rivals to lovers, opposites attract, single parent, fish out of water, forbidden romance, workplace rom com of Alicia Weber and Jackson (Jay) Jones.
Alicia’s life is changed irrevocably when her sister passed away and she became the sole guardian of her nephew Noah. However, when her relationship broke down during the height of her grief, she closed off emotionally and swore off relationships, choosing instead to throw herself into raising her nephew and starting her own tech consultancy business. Alicia is caught in a hailstorm on her way to an interview for her first consulting job since she has gone out on her own when she meets Jackson outside the building not realising he is one half of the founding duo of the company for which she is interviewing. Alicia and Jay are mesmerised by one another, that is until Jay comes face to face with her in the boardroom and it becomes apparent that his business partner Cooper has no faith in him. Despite Jackson being a successful coder, he lacks the confidence and patience to lead his team and with an important deadline looming Cooper decides to bring in Alicia to ensure the project is completed on time. Jackson is understandably upset that his business partner and friend has no faith in him to get the job done and becomes standoff-ish, more grumpy than usual, and is difficult for Alicia and the rest of the team to work with. However, it is apparent there is more than meets the eye with Jackson, he is a little broken and is struggling with ADHD and Cooper seems to get a kick out of treating him like a child in front of the rest of the staff. Alicia wants nothing more than for the sweet, caring guy who she met on that very first morning to come out again and quickly realises there is more to this man than he is letting on. She does everything in her power to bring out the good guy again as she not only wants the project to succeed to help her business, but she also wants it for Jackson, to not only prove to himself that he is capable but to also show Cooper that Jackson can do it without being spoken down to or treated like a child.
Will they be able to work together to achieve their common goal so Alicia can get her new business off the ground and secure a future for her nephew and Jackson can prove to Cooper that he is an equal partner in the business?
New to me narrators Stefanie Kay and Julio Maxwell brought this audiobook to life, and they did an amazing job voicing their characters.
Ms Kay’s performance of the aspirational Alicia who is doing her best to fulfil her late sisters wishes by raising her nephew in the best way possible while also trying to get her own business off the ground was incredible.
Mr Maxwell’s portrayal as nerdy, bossy Jackson who is an accomplished coder but struggled to meet deadlines was fantastic. Julio perfectly showcased Jackson’s neurodiversity and the challenges that come with ADHD in the workplace.
Overall, I loved this audiobook. This was my first Michelle McCraw title, and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was captivated from start to finish by not only the story but the darling characters and can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Work with Me by Michelle McCraw is book 1 in the new Synergy series. It's a Workplace, Boss/Employee, Slow Burn, Enemies to Lovers romance. Narrator Stephanie Kay did an amazing job bringing Author Michelle McCraw FMC Alicia to life. Creating a balance of sass and fierceness to represent her strong will and independent as she prepares to breakout on her own in a job field mostly dominated by men. Bringing a level of depth and familiarity to Alicia's character to draw listeners in during the emotional moments and ready to stand by her side in solidarity if any man does her wrong. Narrator Julio Maxwell who voices MMC Jackson does a great job portraying the cheekiness, friend at work more than a boss, I can do it all own my own man that Jackson seems to be at first. His ability to make Jackson's growth throughout the book feel believable and demonstrates the softness and serious side Jackson turns into. Work With Me is full of fun banter, will they won't they moments, dramatic ups and downs, and the heart of the story isn't just about finding the one or love, but finding out what your truly capable of accomplishing if you believe in yourself.

FMC Alicia I done working for other's and ready to breakout into her own business in the tech world she loves and has worked in for years. Her first contract with Synergy could make or break her start and she'll do anything to make the project go well so she can get a glowing recommendation to draw in new clients. Things art our rocky when she gets caught in a hailstorm, but an anonymous hero steps in to help her and Alicia isn't ready for the impact the following events are about to have on her life. MMC Jackson knows he's not perfect. He's made some mistakes, granted some so big his best friend and business partner Cooper has had to step in to keep them from losing everything, but this last mistake that go him assigned to the Austin headquarters was serious. Jackson thought he was doing better, until in walks Alica, the woman he'd just helped out in the hailstorm and if he just understood Cooper right, she's the new team project leader. That was his job wasn't' it? Not starting off of the right foot Alicia and Jackson instantly clash, but once they take a few deep breaths and really getting into the work they start to get along and actually learn a few things from each other. Quickly what goes from enemies to friends starts to feel like even more, but Jackson knows he can't get involved with Alicia because she's a contracted employee for Synergy and Alicia knows she can't afford to make any mistakes that would put getting the recommendation at risk. Read Work with Me to find out if Alicia and Jackosn find balance and harmony or if sometimes opposites just don't attract?

DNF @ 53%

It started well, I will preface this review with the fact that I was reading it fairly quickly and enjoying it despite the 2D characters. I was into the discussion of being a female in a male-dominated industry and at that point Jackson hadn’t really done anything to give me the ick.

Then at about 40% it’s like the author realised “shit nothing has happened and this is a romance I need to speed it up” all of a sudden after a couple of texts, a lunch where she stormed out and a meal at her house where he showed up unannounced and had dinner with her family he was promising to stay in Austin instead of going back to head office… they hadn’t even kissed! Like I’m sorry WTF, there’s a point where he invites her to a Halloween party a few days before Halloween and says something to the tune of “I’m hoping that on actual Halloween I can take her and the kid trick or treating”. SO MANY RED FLAGS.

I need to mention there has been absolutely no chemistry at this point, maybe 2 flirty texts. It’s not all him though, she’s also like “omg I wish he could stay, I jump at every text he sends” I just don’t get it. She didn’t tell him about her nephew that she cares for because she didn’t want to be judged and she’s given a list of reasons why as a woman she shouldn’t be banging the co-founder of the company she’s working for but now all of a sudden she doesn’t care about that and she’s telling him her ex was shit in bed. Honestly these characters really are just 2D narrative devices, there is absolutely no logic in their behaviour.

To reinforce the utter ick of this man I’ll give you this actual quote, granted he was at a Halloween party and dressed up but just the whole vibe is 🤮 ‘Jackson bounded up to me, wearing jeans and an untucked pink polo with the collar popped to show off a gold chain around his neck. A backwards baseball cap covered his dark hair, and sunglasses glinted across the top…”I’m a brogrammer! Get it?” He made jazz hands.’ I just cannot shake the image of Tim Westwood and it’s just so unsexy. There is just nothing attractive about this man whatsoever.

Oh and he (a multimillionaire) also happens to live in the same apartment as her ex boyfriend who is a kids football coach, sure. Super convenient and not at all convoluted. Ugh. It’s just such a shame, it’s not often I’d have preferred a romance book to stay completely platonic.

This book is no where near as good as Trip Me Up. Maybe she gets better with every book? I really wanted to give it a three but something kept me from it?

First of all Jackson "Jay" is a total screw up. He has ADHD and sees himself as less than worthy so he lets Cooper treat him like crap. He's moody and sulky. He annoyed me for at least the first half of the book. Get it together dude. I guess he stopped annoying me when he brought Alicia her phone.

Alicia was okay but she was constantly swinging between hard ass and being semi smitten that I was getting whiplash. Use words. If you like him talk it out instead of steam rolling over him. Yes I agree with everything she said about it taking women twice or three times as much effort to get what want in business, but it doesn't make an entertaining romance. Especially since he was so moody all the time.

I liked it a lot for the few pages where they were happy. When Jay helped her out with Noah. When we met her mamas. I was like yes finally almost as good as Trip Me Up.

But then Cooper happened. I want to go on record that I hate him. I don't care what his book is about I would never read it. He never has one moment where I think " oh he could be okay". Nope.

I know him showing up everyday was supposed to be sweet but in reality that would be stalker behavior. Ugh. I hate when reality ruins my romance book. But I do feel like Jackson earned my liking enough to earn a 4 star. I know that is not good behavior but he went through so much crap while he patiently waited. And it was rewarded in the end.

The epilogue was cute. ( sans Cooper who was still annoying). I love that it set up their happily ever after. I guess that means I could see them again. Except I read Trip Me Up first and I don't remember them so, maybe not.

Work with Me
Synergy Office Romance, Book 1
By: Michelle McCraw
Narrated by: Stefanie Kay, Julio Maxwell

Fun, fun, fun!!! This book is a fun listen, an easy, romantic, office romance that is sweet and spicy with all the feels. Alicia is starting her own company. Ready to go with her first job, she is off and running. But how does she feel about it? If things go well, this could propel her into the industry. If not, she is going to have to start all over. All the while she is taking care of her nephew and family comes first. Jackson is a successful coder, but lacks the confidence to lead his team. Now that the deadline for his project is fast approaching, Alicia is brought in to save it. Yes, animosity is at the forefront, but will these two find a way to work together? Plus after their initial meeting prior to the office, will they be able to put aside the instant chemistry they have? I loved this story for so many reasons. Jackson is a bit broken, and his best friend, Cooper may have played a bit with that. Grumpy is too kind of a word for him, and he is difficult to work with. Alicia is spread thin. Needing to be there for her nephew, dealing with her moms and launching her business all at once is tough and Jackson just adds to it all..in so many ways. I loved all the banter, the unexpected situations and way it all comes out in the end. It's a wonderful way to please the ears.

Narrated by Stephanie Kay and Julio Maxwell, the time flew by. Kay is Alicia and she gives her every emotion. She is scared, frustrated, passionate, proud, you name it and each feeling is genuine. Together these two gave me an enjoyable listen.

If I had a nickel for every time I read a contemporary romance that referenced George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life this week, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I found this in a Stuff Your Kindle day and it's by far one of the best SYK reads I've picked up yet. There is so much to praise in this plot! First of all, a reformed playboy that is actually up front and honest with his love interest about his past transgressions and tells her the truth about why he can't pursue her? A rich man who says he wants to help and then actually puts his money where his mouth is to support other kids who struggled with neurodivergence like himself? A sorry bastard who blew it and then actually groveled appropriately to win her back? 10s across the board for Jackson Jones, ladies and gentlemen.

And then the FMC: A woman in STEM who isn't afraid to send the office misogynists right the hell back into their lanes? A woman navigating being the legal guardian of her nephew, a full time job, dating in her 30s, and trying to maintain friendships with women in completely different life stages than her own? Alicia Weber, the hot mess hero woman that you are.

My main gripe with this was the role Cooper played in this story; I didn't really care for his role as a frienemy and nothing really seemed to be resolved as far as him being a terrible friend and honestly, the entire reason the love interests were suffering. I would have liked some plot resolution there. I know he has a book later in the series, but I'm glad it's not book two because I really do not want any more of him at this point. I'm really excited to move onto Marlee's book!

Narration 🎤🎤🎤🎤.5

This was such a fun book to listen to. I’m new to both narrators Stefanie Kay and Julio Maxwell and think they did a great job bringing their characters to life. Both did a fairly good job of voicing the opposite sex, something I highly appreciate when listening to narrators. This was also my first Michelle McCraw book and after listening to Work With Me I’ll definitely be listening to the rest of the books in this series.

I loved the double meet cute aspect of this book, it had me giggling out loud. The banter between both Alicia and Jackson was spot on and kept me totally entertained. The representation of neurodiversity was done in a such a compassionate way but didn’t overshadow the main storyline. That part really spoke to me as a stepmom of a child who has ADHD. I truly could feel the struggles Alicia had while she was trying to deal with her nephew Noah.

I do have one question though. What’s up with Cooper? He’s supposed to be Jackson’s BF but he treats him like a child during most interactions in this book. Like I seriously just wanted to punch him sometimes. Jackson is such a sweet caring guy once you get past the closed offness of him, which he does with good reason, and certainly didn’t deserve Cooper’s attitude. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Thanks to Home Cooked Books & Michelle McCraw for the ALC of Work With Me. This is my honest review.
