A Nightmare on Elk Street
Out in Audible now!
Of course I have already read it but was offered a chance to listen to it too!
Still loved it! Full of wit and humor I have come to adore from Phipps and Suttkus! A good giggle while doing chores is a true gift! I will thankfully take it!

E-book
A Nightmare on Elk Street
by C.T. Phipps and Michael Suttkus

This is the third Jane Doe, a weredeer story, and I have loved every one! Each one gets crazier! Start with the first book so you can get the whole background on this zany town. This starts when someone tries to kill her dad. Or maybe it was when the Boogeyman came to kill her? Was it when they decided to do a shifter's slasher movie to help the vampires hide money? Or when Jane's boyfriend, soon to be ex, put the ultimate enemy, dead but alive in spirit, in the community lake to imprison him?

Well anyway, there's lots of action, puns, plenty of humor,
strange creatures, shifters, vamps, (did I mention puns ?), snarky attitudes, and so much more!

I think this book was the best so far! I want to thank the author for letting me read this book! The opinions are my own! Recommend highly! Start with book one!

I enjoyed this book! I thought that it was a nice way to end the Bright Falls Mystery series. Everything about these books is fun so I couldn’t resist giving this book a chance, especially after seeing the title. Like the previous books in the series, this book was filled with pop culture references and a plethora of puns. In addition, this book includes a lot of references to the horror films I remember watching as a teen. I really had a great time with this story.

Jane Doe is currently the Shaman of Bright Falls and decides to take a job working security for a low-budget horror film that Lucien is making. The job turns out not to be so easy once real attacks start happening. Throw in some family drama, some boyfriend troubles, and her feelings for Lucien and things get exciting really quickly. I thought that the pacing of the novel was very well done.

Arielle DeLisle does a fantastic job with this book. I think that her voice works very well for Jane and I like the various voices that she uses for the other characters. This book has a lot of humor worked into the story and I thought that her delivery was very well done. She was also able to add a lot of excitement to her reading. Her narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story.

I would recommend this series to others. It is a nice lighter read that I had a lot of fun with. I loved the way that the puns and pop culture references were worked into the story and I thought that this book brought the trilogy to a satisfying ending. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more of this author’s work in the future.

I received a copy of this audiobook from the author/publicist.

Initial Thoughts
I enjoyed this book. The narration was very well done and the story was very entertaining. Like the previous books in the series, this book was filled with pop culture references and a plethora of puns. Lucien hires Jane to work on the low-budget horror film he is planning to film. Of course, the danger starts right away and Jane not only needs to survive but also deal with some family and boyfriend trouble on top of it all. I thought that this book wrapped up the series quite nicely.

Do you like puns? Horror movies? Fantastic urban fantasy full of witty banter and pop culture jokes? Then you should definitely be reading the Bright Fall Mysteries. Presumably if you’re looking at reviews on this book, you’ve already read the books one & two (if you haven’t, go do so, you can thank me later), and enjoyed them as I did. Book 3, in my opinion, is the best of them. Like Jane, the series has matured a bit, don’t worry, there’s still lots of snark and jokes. But Jane has gained a well deserved confidence that was great to see. The premise of the story, they need to make a low budget horror film to save the city, was a little ridiculous, but in a tongue-in-cheek fun way that was throughly on board for.
Many of the characters from the other shared United States of Monsters world make an appearance, or are at least mentioned, and while it probably helps to be caught up on those, it isn’t needed. William, The Accountant, was a particularly fun appearance for me.
Having read The Supervillainy books would also be helpful to you (especially as I’ve heard laughter is the best medicine, so I’m pretty sure that makes them healthy for you), but not strictly needed to enjoy the book.
But back to Bright Falls and Jane. No longer a teenager, but still obviously a were-deer, she’s got bills to pay, a diner to run, a boyfriend not returning calls, and a movie to star in with a bit too much realism for comfort. I enjoyed getting to experience Jane figure out what she wants for her life versus what was just expected of her. Phipps and Suttkus knock it out of the park with the writing, great pacing, wonderful dialogue, and lots of well timed jokes to keep you laughing. And as usual, they sneak in some great reflections on our current world between, or with, the jokes.

Note: This is book 3 in the series and really works best being read in order.

Jane has to shoulder a lot of crap in this book. She’s the shaman but a lot of people look at her age and make assumptions. But it’s not like she chased after the position. It is what it is. Then there she is, working hard providing safety from the local paranormal elements for a film crew. That film crew includes some of her cousins, and they have a bone to pick with her still about the death of their sister. Then there’s her unavailable boyfriend, Alex. He isn’t returning her calls or texts. It’s all a bit much and it feels like things are falling apart.

But for us readers, it’s a great story full of plenty of culprits with a laundry list of motivations. Jane and her allies must stay on their toes to manage this situation. There’s plenty of snark and pop culture references. I especially liked the cross-over cameos from other Phipps series.

Jane has to face an old fear in this book as she survived an ordeal as a kid at the very same location this film crew wants to work at. Then there is Lucien, who is Alex’s brother and Jane’s ex-lover. Such an awkward position for Jane to be, especially when she vents a little to Lucien about Alex being so distant these past several months. I really felt for Jane on this one as Alex has left her in relationship limbo.

The story has a blistering pace for much of it, plenty of action. I felt like Jane was constantly having to kick something in the mouth just to take a step forward to square up with the next problem. It was great. I liked that there was no moss growing on this story. The tale ramps up a bit for a nice little crescendo and many things are resolved. I still hope to have more books in this series as I don’t feel that Jane is really done fighting Evil. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Arielle DeLisle makes a really good weredeer. She has a great voice for Jane and I like how she managed to make her cousins sound related but also maintained unique voices for each of them. Her male voices are also believable. The pacing is perfect and there were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Buck Yeah, Another Great Weredeer Book!

A Nightmare on Elk Street is the third (and last) book in The Bright Falls Mysteries Series and follows An American Weredeer in Michigan. Like many of C. T. Phipps’ books, it’s set in the United States of Monsters urban fantasy universe (which you can read more about on the author’s blog).

Phipps pays homage to the classic slasher film genre in A Nightmare on Elk Street. Another supernatural killer is rampaging through Bright Falls and Lucien Lyons convinces Jane to work security on the set of his money-laundering scheme … I mean B-movie horror film. While trying to protect the crew, Jane attempts to track down the killer only to discover that the murder’s next target is her.

Though it is still essentially a comedy, A Nightmare on Elk Street is also well-written with a great plot. The plot is a bit thicker in this book than in previous novels as this final installment reveals a hidden narrative arc that’s been building throughout the series. I love the deeply satisfying “ah-ha!” moment you get when you realize how all the little side stories and individual plots have been linked together the entire time. It really makes me appreciate the planning and talent that went into the series.

I’ve liked all of the Bright Falls Mysteries books and Jane’s snark and puns are deer-lightful. So, even though this book is perhaps the best of the series, I’m also really disappointed that this is where the buck stops for Jane’s tail. I’ve just grown so fawn of deer puns and Jane’s snarky personality – along with the rest of her family and friends in Bright Falls. Jane’s just now getting into her stride in Nightmare on Elk Street and my hope is that she continues to show up in supporting roles and cameos in other of Phipps’s books.

Special thanks to C.T. Phipps, who provided me with this book at my request.

Review originally posted at BooksOfMyHeart.net.

I was very excited to be back in Bright Falls, Michigan, a town full of shifters and other supernaturals. Our main character, Jane Doe, is a weredeer. Weredeer have a thing with puns, they can’t help but make them. So, be ready for some truly chuckle-worthy puns in this series. There are plenty of pop-culture references, this one heavy on 80s slasher flicks (though there are references to genres of horror too).

So in this story, criminal mastermind and weredragon, Lucien, is trying to get Bright Falls out of some seriously heavy debt from the vampires. How do you make money quickly and mostly legally? You make a cheap horror movie with the supernatural (way cheaper than special effects). But then, someone is trying to kill off the cast. Jane, hired to be one of the stars and security, has something to say about that.

This is a really fun series with characters I would love to meet in person. There is plenty of action and so many laugh out loud moments. I would recommend that you start the series with the first book, I Was a Teenage Weredeer. If you’ve read some of other Phipps’ books, you will notice that some other characters from this world are mentioned, but you can read this series without having read any of the others (though I recommend them because they are just as much fun).

Narration:
Arielle DeLisle does a wonderful job of the narration of this series. There is a fairly large cast of characters, many of them male, and she has no issues with all the voices. I think each of the voices match the personality of the character. She’s also great at the inflection of each character, bringing out the humor of the story.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELK STREET is the third and final Bright Falls Mystery. It may not be the last Jane Doe, Weredeer book but it is a nice cap to the themes and stories I started in I WAS A TEENAGE WEREDEER. When Jane started this story, she was newly 18 and determined to change the world. At age 23, she's now someone a lot more cynical and aware that she's outgrown her tiny town and its dark secrets.

I had a lot of fun writing this book as it deals with a kind of ridiculous premise: that Lucien is making a bunch of exploitation and slasher movies with real shifters. I used to love the Horror section at my old Blockbuster and these are the kind of films he's making that probably would be Kickstarter-backed if not for the fact he's a pot kingpin. I also got to incorporate characters like Arthur (Brightblade) and William (Psycho Killers in Love) due to the fact they're exactly the sorts of people you'd hire to help make cheap horror films.

We'll get to see the resolution of Jane's love triangle with Alex and Lucien, meet some of Jane's cousins, and also have her come to terms with the events of Darkwater Lake. I think you'll really like this if you've enjoyed the series so far.

Oh all the horror movie references! And from a time when I watched horror (I don't watch horror anymore, or the newer ones). This was fun with them and all the cliches. Jane's not your "damsel in distress" type. She's a horror fan.

This book talks about Jane's time with Super Villainy and Straight Outta Fangton series's. It's nice to see them all come together with Jane here. Did I laugh as much...not really, But I love all the references to old time movies. So fun!

Jane has somethings to work through with her family. She also is working on her relationships. As the story goes, she works through these and learns about her relationships more as she solves the mystery of who's behind the horror characters trying to murder people...and why.

This story comes to what feels as an end for the series. Things feel to have tied together even though life goes on. It feels complete to this series.

There's a bonus Short Story added to this book. :D Always fun! It's a fun little adventure with Jane and her best friend Emma. A vampire looking for a very special sword buried in the area. It's a little history with Emma's family and a quick fun adventure.

Time to make a horror movie!
When making a slasher movie with a cast and crew of supernaturals; what could go wrong? Just the normal stuff: Possessions, Kraft Services issues, stabbings, and demonic gods.
Lucien, the criminal enterprising weredragon, is now making B-Movies in the slasher genre using an all supernatural cast. I mean, magic costs a lot less than CGI. But someone is trying to kill him and the rest of the stars of the movie. And the worst part of all, it’s someone who read the script.
Jane Doe, (weredeer and Shaman of Bright Falls), has been hired on as a principal actor as well as security for the shoot. But when you count werespiders, vampires, and conservatives in your cast, the suspects are endless.
This is a fun romp around the slasher genre with huge stakes. Puns and bullets fly as Jane attempts to do her best impression of a detective and find out who is trying to kill the cast of the movie…as well as who stole her CDs. And there are no butlers to be found.
Another winner from CT Phipps and his expanding Supernatural Universe. A fun and fast paced read!

In some respects Jane has come a long way since book one and in others she hasn’t. She’s still very much winging it through this episode.

I like how the world building is now intertwining elements from the wider United States of Monsters. It brings a depth to the story for those whoever read the authors other works. I don’t think it would detract from the story though for those who haven’t.

I’m still not a fan of the Jane, Alex, Lucian triangle and that’s why it’s 4*. However, I look forward to seeing more of Jane Doe.

Great conclusion!

This one hits all the points for every character. Horror movie references galore. Tons of ridiculous predicaments with equally funny results.

A Nightmare on Elk Street

A great read! In my opinion this was the best book of the trilogy.

I really enjoy the universe the author has set up over the years
