The Drift: Haven Colony #2

Her Cyborg Champion

Rate this book
She risked everything to escape from Earth - but her new life came with a cost.

Haven colony is Maggie’s new home and her one chance at freedom. Clean water, free air... As far as she’s concerned, it’s paradise. But getting here meant leaving her best friend behind.

It doesn’t take long for her to learn Haven is surrounded by hidden dangers—and the most dangerous of all is a sexy, scarred cyborg named Striker.

Humans took everything from him. His family, his friends, even his voice. Why would he trust one of them with anything?

Striker just wants to live quietly. The wild places beyond the colony are his sanctuary, a place he can go to forget about his past and the ones he failed to protect.

He intended to stay clear of the human colonists. Then, one of them started entering his woods. Maggie isn’t like the others. She’s determined, beautiful, and unaware of the dangers prowling the forest.

He never wanted to be responsible for anyone again, but the flame-haired beauty needs him more than she knows… and he might need her more than he thinks.

Standard cyborg romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💚❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: 😔🤓🥰

The heroine: Maggie - since Earth is a dying planet, Maggie and her best friend Jade decided to hack their way into the lottery of women that get to travel to a new world called Haven. It is a planet with plenty of air and atmosphere. On Earth Maggie and Jade were thieves and lived on the lower levels of an indoor world. They couldn’t see the outdoors and were considered the dregs of society. Though when Maggie leaves, Jade is not with her.

The Hero: Striker - he is a cyborg who lives on Haven, but he rarely goes into the colony. He likes to be in the forest where he is alone and can breathe clean air, and run-in wide-open spaces. Though the forest is dangerous, he knows what to watch out for. Before he was freed from the corporations, he was tortured, experimented on and made to fight and kill his friends and batch siblings. He has a lot of guilt and just wants to be left alone.

The Story: When Maggie gets to Haven, she immediately loves it. It takes her no time to get used to the gravity, which is denser than Earths, and she loves the fact that she no longer has to breathe recycled air. She is very adaptable which comes from the way she was brought up, though she is always preparing for things to go bad. So, she gathers caches of survival items and hides them in the forest so if something ever happens, she can go dig them up and have things like food tablets, blankets and extra clothes. Whenever she goes into his forest, Striker keeps an eye on Maggie and though he hates humans, he is interested in her.

The story is pretty standard for a cyborg romance. The cyborgs hate humans because humans treated them like crap after their initial military use ran out. Maggie has no knowledge of how Striker had been treated and in fact she wasn’t treated much better from the world she left behind. They find common ground in the fact that they both just did what they had to in order to survive.

The romance was cute, and the intimate scenes were steamy, but not too steamy. Overall, the book could have had some more action and adventure. I wish it was a bit longer, but it wasn’t bad. I did like the world and the characters and will most likely try another book from this series. Jade’s story is next for me.

3.25/5

Started off pretty strong but slowly lost its momentum. You know when a book starts off different enough but slowly becomes the same old same old? Like the first 1/3 is good/developed but then everything after is kinda blah and very formulaic. Idk, good but not great, nothing really to complain about but nothing to rave about or even remember 🤷‍♀️ I did start this very long series/interconnected books near the end tho, so im going to start in the beginning and see if they're any better.

I love Maggie. She is a strong, "I'm gonna do it, anyway" type of gal that just makes you want to jump right in there with her. She & Jade seem to have this sisterhood that you have with your best friend that has always been there & always will be until the very end. It's not easy to explain, you are so connected that you feel each other's pain or joy. It seems like that's the way it is for them. Maggie is so worried about her sometimes, she feels bad about being so happy in her new home. Maggie is one of the first humans to be sent to the haven. Striker is watching from the woods as the women all come out of the ship. He notices her joy at being in the sunlight & that she seems to be an outsider to the rest of them. Maggie recycles things & trades with people & has been stashing things out in the woods while she has been getting settled in on haven. She doesn't believe anything this good will last. Skye, a supportive cyborg, has told her to stay out of the woods because of the wildlife & some of the cyborgs who don't think humans belong on this planet. Maggie has a sharpened walking stick & just keeps going out. Striker has been watching her when she comes out into his area wondering what she is doing. He has protected her a couple of times without her knowing it. He sees a bark spider about to bite her, he throws a knife at it & kills it. He scares her half to death but saves her life. She introduces herself & asks his name. He carves it into a tree. He doesn't talk, shows her the scar on his throat. She wants to know about the knife, he shows her the really big spider. He makes hand gestures about it being venomous. She gets the idea, & gets her headed back to the colony. Three days later she has come back out with some homemade cookies for him. He finds her out in about the same spot where they met. She gave him the cookies as a sort of thankyou for saving her. He really likes them, she finds out he can speak. He would just rather not because it hurts. As they are standing there a storm blows in out of no where. They go to his cabin in the woods to wait it out. Skye is trying to locate Maggie. Maggie has sent her messages that she is alright. Edge, another cyborg is communicating with Striker telling him that they might need his help to locate one of the humans. She likes to walk in the woods. Striker tells him she is fine & in his cabin out of the storm. He will get her back in time for dinner. He agrees to train her how to protect herself. He gets her back & is gone before Skye opens a door. She starts asking questions & when Maggie tells her some things she decides they should go to Bar None to talk & grab something to drink as well. Skye introduces her to Anya who owns the bar. Maggie had been a bartender on earth. Anya, her mom, Hezza, & Skye give their orders & Maggie goes up to the bar & makes them. Anya can't wait to hire her & Maggie can't wait to sign on. Skye thinks after what she has heard today, Maggie is ready to move ahead & join the colony as a citizen with job & her own place. Striker goes to get a dagger small & light enough for Maggie to use. While he is at the shop he has the owner design a blaster that would fit her hands as well. He has them put a trcker on it, in case she gets lost again. He takes the dagger with him. Maggie is looking for his place, but her tablet gets jammed up & she messages him. He has too come find her. They do a lot of training. She tells him about her new job & how people can get a little grabby. He doesn't like it. He gives her the knife & tells her to stab someone if they get that way. She tries to tell him, stabbing customers is bad for business, but he doesn't think so. She needs to get back to get ready for work. He decides to go see for himself. He gets cleaned up & for the first time comes in to The Bar None. His pals Wreckage & Ruin are sitting at a table & invite him over. He sees Maggie at the bar & all the males trying to get her attention. He isn't to happy about it or her short skirt. His buddies ask what he is here for, booze or food? He says he is keeping an eye on a friend. He offers to get the next round. He goes up to the bar & orders. She tells him her break will be soon & she will have her dinner with him. He takes the drinks back with him. They ask him how he did with the redhead bartender? He tells them her name is Maggie & she is under his protection. They want to know how he did that in 2 minutes. He tells them how they met & his cookies. Anya asks who he is, & tells her to take her break. She gets her food & sits with them. He introduces her to his friends & they listen to Kade while he gives his concert. Her break is over. She heads to the bar when one of the males pinches her. Striker has him on the floor in short order. Anya asks what is going on, after questions have been answered, she asks if he wants to be hired on as her bouncer. She has needed one for a long time. He agrees, he then says they need to leave, he tosses her over his shoulder & they go to his house that he has in town. He doesn't use it very often. After they get inside he asks if she will stay with him. She says yes, and they get really into each other. Later he is out jogging with a few of his friends, they tell him something is wrong with the protection grid. It has messed up some of the connections with other systems as well. They don't believe it is just a glitch. Skye & Shadow come over to check on Maggie to see if she's ok. After she let's them know she's fine & they leave. He comes home bringing the little blaster he had specially designed for her. She is ecstatic. Striker tells her because of the problems with the grid, she should stay in town while he goes into the woods to check the traps. While he is gone she receives a message from Jade. It tells her she needs to run, hunters will be coming for her. She leaves him a message that tells him she needs to hide out & she is going to go to his cabin. She makes it to the woods when he catches up to her wanting to know what is going on. She tells him everything. About how she & Jade rigged the drawing to get here. Jade put some encrypted data in her enhancements, but she doesn't know what it is or how to open it. Now it seems that someone is coming for her. He is angry that she lied to him, all of them. He tells her he is done & to go back to the colony. She tells him is she goes back people will get hurt. He tells her to go back. She starts running. He lets Skye know what might be happening. He is following her trail as he is talking to Skye to see she didn't go back. He sees that she went to her stashes & he sees more then just her foot prints in the mud, There is a burnt tree from a blaster bolt. Someone took her, He tells Skye. He asks Wreckage & Ruin, & a few others to help him get her back. He assumes they are on hover bikes because there are no more tracks. He uses the tracker he had put in her blaster to locate her. He & his group find a large ship that has shields around it so no one can see it. Maggie wakes up in a room to find her wrists tied & split lip & swollen eye. She sees Jade who looks horrible. Her enhancements had been remover from her arms, not very carefully, judging by the bloody bandages & the way she was moving. She hears men outside. Jade is telling her a little. The men come in to tell her what they want, the data Jade had sent her. She makes a bargain with something she doesn't have to stall for as long as she can & hope Striker will come for her. When Striker & the others start firing to get the other out of the ship she yells at the man. Striker hears her & runs to find her. He hits the man & knocks him into a wall, it kills him. She runs to him. Wreckage helps free Jade & picks her up. She took a blaster bolt in the leg to save Maggie. They get off the ship to find most of the colony there to help. They get the medical unit in to help Jade & check Maggie. Striker took a bolt to his arm. Maggie got a concussion. He tells the council that he wants Maggie to be his mate. Since that is done she should get her nanobites now. They agree. They all go home, with one prisoner alive. He was an indentured servant, a cook. So, later the council decide since he was not there by choice he should be able to earn colony citizenship if he wants later. They discuss what has happened with the grid. Find out what was in Maggie's unit was a list. They think it might have been possible spies since it was all the human women names on the first trip. After the meeting Maggie invites everyone to a party at The Bar None as a thank you for coming to try to save her. It was a great story.

I think I left my heart on Haven

These two characters are a match made in Haven. Striker is such a fantastic example of the strong, silent, alpha male type. I love how meeting Maggie broke him from his shell and gave him focus. And who wouldn’t love Maggie! She’s such a cute ball of endearing energy. From her first moment on the planet I just knew she was going to shake things up. On top of all that, the author gave us this fantastic story about coming together and understanding what’s really important. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book! I really hope we get to see Jade’s story next, there are a few possibilities that I can only hope turn out to be perfect for her. No matter who the next hero, or heroes, are, I just know it’s going to be amazing!

Freedom isn’t free. Nothing in life really is. That’s a lesson Maggie learned early in life. Striker is a cyborg who is still suffering from memories before Haven. His first glimpse of Maggie is a blast of fresh air. I love these two. Maggie is fearless and Striker is fierce. Them together unbeatable.
Escape with these two and enjoy.

4.5 Stars

For me, The Drift books range from 3 to 5 stars. This new offshoot -- Haven Colony is off to a strong start. Grumpy/sunshine with Maggie (sunshine) also having a survivor's need to have back up plans and commitment to developing kick-a self-defense skills.

Starting Over... Together

Maggie Piper and her best friend, Jade, were supposed to be leaving together for Haven. But the night before their flight, Jade disappeared. Maggie will be going on this voyage to Liberty alone. Regardless, when she saw that first glimpse of pure air, clean water, genuine daylight, she was overwhelmed with its perfection. The only cost to her was a lifetime bond with a pair of alien strangers.

Striker was a cyborg whose only common on humans was that they ruined everything they touched. He was hanging back in the woods, watching the shuttle land with the new human brides. His leader, Edge, invited him over but he stayed where he was. When the last one stood in the doorway waiting for the one ahead to reach the tarmac, she suddenly let out a whoop, exploded out of the door, and slid down the railing to the ground, then bounding up, spinning around, and dancing! No one had ever reacted like that with such joy! The other women tried to ignore her, and he felt drawn because she was an outsider just as he was. He watched her every day as she went into the woods and hid things away. He had no idea why. It was an Earth habit to keep stashes so she always had food, clothes, cash or whatever she needed in a hurry. Since no one stopped her, he protected her in the woods, although she never knew that.

I absolutely loved this story! The way Striker and Maggie slowly learned to care and respect each other was beautiful. They were what each other needed. Their dialog was fun and indicated how comfortable they were becoming with each other. She fully trusted him. And he responded to that trust. He appreciated her innate intelligence and he made sure to keep her safe. If this isn’t a love story, I don’t know what you would call it. Seriously, the world building is the best, the characters are so real you want to hug them, and the story line will keep you captivated all the way through. Do not miss this wonderful book!

A story of survivors, redemption, and new beginnings

The Haven Colony “world” expands with this second tale in the series. The planets indigenous flora, fauna, and wildlife would give most settlers pause, but Maggie joins a few Cyborgs in her appreciation of the beauty and solitude of the forest surrounding the colony. When Maggie and Stryker meet the instant chemistry is palpable but both of them have guilt and regrets weighing on their souls. Our lead couple tells us their stories through their own POVs, and it was as if I could feel their sorrow and hopefulness. They join an existing group of characters I have come to know and love through previous books, making this read like taking a vacation to a place so inviting and intriguing you just can’t wait for the next trip. I loved this witty, exciting read.

Futuristic, cyborg-laden, steamy romance…

I couldn’t wait to dive back into the Haven! The Drift is one of my favourite futuristic romance series and the Haven Colony has continued it with more fun, intriguing characters with all the drama and heat I could want…

This time out, Maggie finds herself at Haven without her best friend but in a place she’d only dreamed about. She was life-loving but also realistic. The shoe would drop eventually, and as usual, she would be prepared. What she didn’t realize was that others were noticing. Especially Striker. Ahh, Striker. A man of few words, Maggie struck a chord with him. A loner he might be, she was going to pull him out of his routine and his shell.

There's heat, humour and above all love here. Can’t wait for more!

*I happily reviewed this story

Forest Adventure

This story was between a human named Maggie and a Cyborg named Stryker. Maggie was part of the first group of women from a hive city on Earth. She loved being on a planet with fresh air and a sky she could see for miles. But she tended to be a loner. She started taking walks in the forest and met another loner, a cyborg named Stryker. They got to know each other and a relationship developed. Unbeknownst to Maggie and everyone on the planet, she was being hunted by the Gray Men, a secret cabal working with the corporations to subjugate cyborgs and indentured humans. I liked that we got to see the forested area and the shore of the ocean. This is a decent sized planet that's starting to have growing pains with so many humanoid beings arriving every couple of months.

I started reading The Drift series from the very beginning. I thought they were good in the beginning and they have just gotten better and better with each new book.

Maggie is in the first group of colonists who come to Haven from Earth. While she was a bit shady by necessity when living on Earth, she has every intention of living an honest life on Haven. She meets Striker pretty early on and although he has no use for humans, she earns his trust and they begin forming a relationship.

Striker has little reason to trust humans but something about Maggie draws him to her. She makes him rethink his beliefs about humans.

Just when things are going good, trouble comes looking for Maggie and she almost loses her newfound life on Haven as well as the love and trust of Striker.

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this one, and I truly enjoyed it!

Susan Hayes is always a fun read. She's got loads of humor, action, and sexy times. Maggie and Striker, yum! They certainly "strike" some seriously hawt sparks off each other.

Maggie's a free-spirited rebel, and sometimes near criminal (shhh, don't tell anyone) who pretty much gamed an opportunity to get off earth. Striker is the walking-wounded. A cyborg who trusts very few, and who trusts humans not at all.

The original intergalactic odd-couple that, somehow, work, lol. But Maggie has secrets, will Striker give her the chance to explain herself, or will she find herself booted from the colony?

Awesome addition to both The Drift and the Haven Colony series. Buy it, read it, enjoy it! You won't be sorry!

Another awesome book in the world of The Drift. This is the second book in the Haven Colony series and it did not disappoint. Maggie is one of the new humans to come to Haven. She has not had an easy life and is looking for a new start for more than one reason. Old habits are hard to break though and she continues with some things that well.. read, no spoilers. Striker despises humans. So, when an excited Maggie gets off the shuttle basically doing a happy dance and catches his attention... well talk about shocker. He knows he needs to keep her safe. He just doesn't know how hard that will be and he doesn't expect to fall in love with her. Ok, there is an HEA but.. wow.. I really did not want this one to end. I was beyond hooked.

10 stars worthy, Susan Hayes new book Her Cyborg Champion is a must read if you love cyborgs! This series continues the Drift in a different direction....the planet Haven. Here all species can find peace and possibly a mate. Maggie does her best to escape Earth, her dying planet, to seek a better life with her friend Jade. Striker is the abused misunderstood cyborg who seeks his solitude but not a mate. The Fates have other plans for the two of them. I really love the Drift series but I also love the Haven Colony reads as well. This is quality writing that takes the lead as one of my all time favorites. I can see myself rereading this one many times. Enjoy!❤️❤️❤️❤️

Another fantastic addition to the series and i love it. Maggie just arrived at the Haven Colony and its a paradise. She escaped Earth without her best friend and she is worried about her. She is stashing caches of food and supplies in the forest when she is rescued by a hot cyborg from the animal wildlife. Striker is fascinated with Maggie. She is determined, feisty, and sexy. He doesn't like humans and has stayed away from them since his arrival on the planet. He decides to train her in order to help her survive on the planet. What happens when he discovers that she lied to get here and is then kidnapped? I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

My anxiety was already on alert when Maggie’s story unfolds. I don’t know that I could have been as brave as Maggie. She did have great instincts and was willing to learn. Striker was totally unexpected in how he reacted. He and Maggie worked out wonderfully in Haven. The colony with all of its lively characters is refreshing to read. How Striker, Maggie and the others are learning to live together and put a new footprint on life. When danger comes to them, they all work together and are excepting of each other.

This is the second in the Haven series but does not have to be read in order. The first two have been a pleasure to read and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Light, meet Dark.

Human Maggie is finally free from her old life on Earth and is thrilled to be starting her new life on this new planet despite not having her bestie with her. Recluse cyborg, Striker is drawn to her and is protective of her, even before she knows he exists. Their growing trust and love was emotional and sweet. The suspenseful plot was exciting and the secondary characters were interesting. Though the climax was satisfying, I don't understand how that was the big secret Jade had called their insurance policy? Against whom? Oh well, I hope Jade gets her story soon.

Maggie and Striker

Absolutely brilliant story filled with wonderful characters that have so many interesting tales to tell. I would heartily recommend this book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and hopefully others enjoy it as well. Maggie is finally where she wants to be free but what if the people that run this place find out that she and her friend Jade manipulated the system to be there. Striker is a cyborg who doesn't like humans because of what was done to him and his batch siblings but something is different about Maggie. Can these two people overcome the obstacles that they face and could they each be what the other needs.

Susan's Cyborgs made me fall in love with cyborgs! It feels more than just sci-fi. Her characters so full of life and passion her stories are just a lot of fun to read. Two people seeking something different for themselves, falling in love wasn't on either of their agendas. Haven gives them a home a place that seems anyone can fit in no matter race, creed or sex. When we have things mapped out for ourselves we see the smooth possibilities up until fate throws some curves in. Sit back and enjoy Stryker and Maggie they start off with a little spark read on and see that spark grows. Enjoy

Splendid storytelling!
Nothing can beat Maggie’s exuberance when she arrives at Haven. I love her personality. Is it at all surprising that she attracts the attention of an inhospitable, growly, angry reclusive cyborg? Maybe. Do they ’click’? Oh, yes! Maggie and her friend, Jade, have a fascinating story; one you won’t want to miss. I love reading about the things that take place in the Haven colony. I can almost see several potential matches to come. Tune in for edge of your seat action, hot romance, and a superbly satisfying ending.

An enjoyable sci-fi romance.

The world building of Haven and the woods surrounding the colony was vivid, with the wildlife coming to life. The plot was exciting, which meant the pacing was quite quick. The characterization was good, though the hero had a temper tantrum at one point that was out of character, and that was a little too convenient for what happened next in the plot. The development of the romantic relationship was natural and organic. Reading this novel was an enjoyable way to spend my Tuesday evening.

Champion?

You assume as the story starts that Striker is Maggie's champion, and he is that. But then you realize he got the name because the Gray Men pitted the cyborgs they experimented on against each other until only one was left alive...The Chanpion. With all their struggles it's nice to see these two so happy. It will be fun to see what happens to Jade later. It was also very smart of these two, after what they went thru before Haven, that they wanted to set up rangers to protect the planet they now called home.

Great Couple!

Maggie and Striker are such a fun pair! I loved coming back to Haven Colony in the Drift. Maggie is human and Striker is a cyborg that doesn’t trust humans. He mainly stays apart from most others in the woods. He meets Maggie while saving her and they have an instant connection. He’s gruff and protective and she’s kind and bubbly. Their connection is hot and their banter funny. I really enjoyed reading about them. I received this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review but I loved it so much I already bought a copy for my own library .

Freebie from RARE Melbourne 2025.

Decent enough. Woman goes to new planet for a fresh start because Earth is f*cked. There are cyborgs and aliens. She crosses paths with a reclusive cyborg who hates humans but feels the need to protect her.

Friendship develops into something more.

There's a background story and mystery.

Clearly part of a larger universe (though this is the second in this series) but that didn't matter much other than to make me a little interested in the rest.

Unnecessary, and odd use of the term 'brat'. Affectionately but odd from a cyborg 🤷‍♀️

Another winner

Susan Hayes has once again grabbed our hearts and minds with another winner story of Haven.
Welcome back to Haven, a refuge for the misplaced, alien and human alike.
New arrival Maggie is looking to make a new life for herself, alone. Then she runs into Striker, an alien who has no love for humans. Until Maggie makes an impact on his warrior, and bruised, heart.
Very enjoyable!

I received a free copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It seems every book the author writes I want to be one of the characters. Well this time I am Magpie. What a creature to behold. Finally able to escape the dying planet Earth she finds wonder in all the things she has never experienced before. She can breathe clean air. But some of her old ways stay with her. And she finally finds someone who makes her truly feel like she is home.

Striker’s Brat

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and varied. The world building was imaginative and Susan sets the scenes perfectly. Striker and Maggie were an unlikely couple but from the the first, they clicked. With the sexy scenes and the action at the end, this was an enjoyable afternoon read.

Love, love this new instalment to the Haven Colony.
I’ve been eager to read about Striker and Maggie since Susan’s sneak peek in the previous book.
Maggie is such a spitfire! And Striker is literally big and growly, what more could you want?
Really enjoyed reading more about the environment around the colony. Would very much like to get more of a whole world picture in upcoming books.
