Cassandra Logan's husband died in a saloon brawl, leaving her pregnant and destitute. When she reads of a man's disappearance and presumed death in the newspaper and notes how much he looks like her deceased husband she gets a crazy idea. Then when she can't pay the rent and the landlord attempts to take it out in kind resulting in his accidental death, she puts the idea in action. She shows up at Morgan Tolliver's ranch claiming to be pregnant with Ryan Tolliver's child. Morgan doesn't believe her but she knows some facts about Ryan and has a picture that looks like him. Morgan hires a retired Pinkerton to find out the truth. In the meantime, Cassandra has her baby and begins to make a place for herself in the family. Morgan and Cassandra are drawn to each other but the truth will end their relationship. Good story of ranch life in 1879 Wyoming with interesting secondary characters in a Chinese family working on the ranch.
"Do you trust the wind? Do you trust the rain? The man who does not move until he is sure of everything will spend his life waiting. Do not be afraid to do a foolish thing, my son. Do not be afraid to lose, to hurt, to bleed, or you will die old and lonely, mourning all the things you have never known."💜 Beautiful and heartfelt, Elizabeth Lane knows how to write romance and adventure with characters filled with flaws and vulnerability.
found family, pregnant protag, miscommunication, and a touch of "my brother's woman" to make things even more difficult.
I liked this, but the rating is solely for the strong writing and premise. the start of this book was infinitely more pleasant than the latter half of it. It's not a bad book, I just feel as though the ending was rushed, leaving a bit of an underwhelming feeling once we're done with it.
The plot of this book required me to suspend disbelief that a God-fearing woman could concoct and brazenly lie about such a serious matter as the father of her unborn child. The author did spend time explaining that Cassandra Riley would do ANYTHING for her child.
Morgan Tolliver surprised me with his willingness to allow Cassandra to stay while he checked her story. Again, the author did a great job explaining the animosity between Cassandra and Morgan and the angst Cassandra felt while continuing to lie.
Once the reader gets past those two boulders in the road, the rest of the book is fascinating. There are unusual characters aplenty in this story. The subplot about Morgan helping his Chinese cook import 2 brides for his adult sons was interesting and unusual.
This was a story I couldn't put down until I finished it.
This book was cute, but the whole lie that Cassandra maintains kind of irritated me. It's sort of historically inaccurate, too, that she didn't have more of a problem with Morgan. Everything falls together a bit too easily.
