Jennifer Roberts and Tracy Barrett bring together their respective mastery of scholarship and storytelling to tell the history of a place, a people, and a culture that has left some of the most beautiful art, the greatest stories, and the most magnificent cities and buildings that the world has ever known. The Ancient Greek World uses primary sources such as Homer's Odyssey , Herodotus' Histories , a Minoan drinking cup, and a child's grave epitaph to present a balanced and lively narrative history of ancient Greece. A chronology, cast of characters, maps, pronunciation table, further reading, and index supplement the main text.
Jennifer Tolbert Roberts is Professor of Classics and History at the City College of New York and the City University of New York Graduate Center. She is the author of Athens on Trial: The Anti-Democratic Tradition in Western Thought and Herodotus: A Very Short Introduction, and editor (with Walter Blanco) of the Norton Critical Editions of Herodotus' The Histories and Thucydides' The Peloponnesian War.
This series can't quite decide from volume to volume if it is an overview series aimed at adults or at YA teens. This one definitely targets the latter in tone and feels decidedly "lighter" than other entries in the series, which is odd, considering the sheer amount of research and study that has been dedicated to Classical Greece for centuries. I definitely feel like, unless one is really completely ignorant on the subject matter, there are better primers, even for the novice.
"The Ancient Greek World", provides an overview of the history, culture, and society of ancient Greece. It is well-organized and structured and covers the major historical events and cultural trends that shaped ancient Greece, such as the Persian Wars and the rise of democracy in Athens. The authors also do an excellent job of contextualizing the ancient Greek world within the broader historical and cultural context. While it may not provide an in-depth analysis of every topic, this book is a good introduction to the study of ancient Greek history and culture. Its content lays a strong groundwork for readers seeking further exploration of this fascinating period in history.
