Two unlikely dinosaur friends brave the way in the second book in the Thunder and Cluck Level 1 Ready-to-Read Graphics series!
It is a hot day. Thunder and Cluck find a dark, cool cave. But which friend is brave enough to lead the way in?
Ready-to-Read Graphics books give readers the perfect introduction to the graphic novel format with easy-to-follow panels, speech bubbles with accessible vocabulary, and sequential storytelling that is spot-on for beginning readers. There’s even a how-to guide for reading graphic novels at the beginning of each book.

Thunder and Cluck are back! This time, it is a warm day and they are looking for some way to cool off a bit. They find a cave but Thunder is afraid of the dark - or at least, that's what Cluck believes. Thunder denies it. So they dare each other to prove that they are brave. I like how the book subtly interweaves the concept of opposites. A pool of water that looks cool is actually hot. Thunder has big feet which makes it easy for him to cross a small stream. I'm not sure if that was the author's intention, but it would be fun to find different opposites with a preschooler/Kindergartner reading the book. And I continue to LOVE the expressions on Thunder's face. Well done! Another fun addition to a series of beginning readers that are also graphic novels!
Another delightful addition to the Thunder and Cluck series! I adore the artwork, humor, and the dynamic between the two friends. What really stood out to me in this book were the panels in which Thunder saves Cluck from trying to prove his bravery by doing something that could injure him, stating "Hugging that plant could really hurt you, Cluck. That is not brave." In a time of Tide Pod and other dangerous TikTok & YouTube challenges, this is an important and timely message, which readers might glean more from in the way it's presented than they would in a preachy, "here's what you should have learned today" format. Well done, Jill Esbaum!
The zany duo Thunder and Cluck are back again as they search for a relief on a very hot day. A cool (literally) cave offers opportunity but it's dark and scary. Who will bravely venture in first? The fun dialogue by Jill Esbaum and vivid graphic illustrations by Miles Thompson offer lots of laughs as the pair of friends figure out who is braver. What's next for these two? Beginning readers will no doubt be looking for the next in the series!
Spunky duo both trying to act brave, but both being a little bit scared. The author does a great job of showing a newer reader how to read comic panels, speech bubbles, etc. The illustrations are vibrant and bold, the dinosaurs change colors and are very animated, depending on their emotions. A few funny parts pull together their adventure as they try to find a way to cool off. My toddler was very drawn to the characters and their antics.
On the whole, pretty simple, but hey, it's a level 1 reader!
Checked out at library and reviewed in consideration for Cybils Award Easy Reader shortlist for 2021.
i read all 3 of these today, but i'm putting my review here. i think this one was my favorite! if only for the funny hug moment at the end-ish lol i have a lot of fun with books for v little ones! this is an introduction to graphic novels/comics and has a section at the beginning of every book about how to read them (order of panels, speech vs thought bubbles, etc). i think this could be a really fun next step for kiddos who like picture books but maybe aren't yet sure about chapter books, if that makes sense? or for adults who just like dinos = )
My little girl laughed out loud while we reading these books about Thunder and Cluck! We hope there will be more. It brings me so much joy to see my child get excited about reading!
