One night will never be enough.

I'm never letting a shrink in my head again. My pants, though? Dr. Scott Howard has been there, done that, and left an imprint on my soul.

It was supposed to be a one-night stand, but I can't get Howie out of my mind. He's my brother's shrink. Nothing else can happen between us. So why can't I stop kissing him?

Howie's not like any shrink I've ever met. One kiss leads to another and before I know it, he doesn't just know my mind … he has my heart.

But will he want to stick around when he finds out just how messed up I really am?

The men at the Vanguard Towers call themselves "brothers"...and they are, only not by blood. They all grew up in foster care...and the Vanguard Towers is an old building that several of them bought and restored into apartments in the first book. It's home to all of them and their ever-growing family of significant others. This is one of the brothers, Owen, and his "love interest"...Howie's story. They are two men who find love in this edition of the series. This series is one of the first M/M Romance series that I acquired... but it hasn't by any means been my last. I bought this series, book by book when it when it first came out and am now rereading it for probably the fifth or sixth time. There were hints in books 1-4 books that something was going to happen between these two, but you don’t need to have read all 4 of those to completely understand this one. It nicely stands up on its own. Owen and Howie get the story started with a hook-up that afterward each man thinks was more than likely a bad idea. Their attraction for one another brings them back together, but they try to keep it casual. The more time they spend together though, the more they’re starting to realize it’s much more than just casual. Howie is ready to jump into the commitment. but Owen, is much more cautious. He has a lot of trauma, which is why he's in Howie's office to begin with...caused by an unprofessional shrink, long ago. He's never properly dealt with it and now when he finds love its holding him back from trying to have a relationship with his current shrink and the personal friend of all the guys at the Vanguard Towers. One of Aiden Bates’ best themes is "found family". He adds scenes that include all the Vanguard Towers "brothers" (and significant others) interacting with both Howie and Owen. These are some of my favorite scenes. Bates also keeps things low-angst and sweet. If you’ve read and liked previous books of this series; or others like it... you’ll enjoy ‘Rise and Fall’ also. Although I have all the books, I decided it would be fun to hear the guys, so I listened to the audio. Guillaume Dubois, the narrator...did a fantastic job on the voices. It was quite the experience to hear the voices of the individual men.

To be completely honest, this is such a great narrator and I loved every moment of this audiobook. It was engaging and real. The two MC's were perfection from the start and I just really enjoyed the entire thing. So far, this one is the best, IMO, but I seem to always say that!!

This is the fifth book in the series, and I have dearly loved every one of them, but this one dug a little deeper into my heart. Owen’s past and his current struggles broke my heart. I felt each sob as he finally spoke to his brothers. It was a powerful moment in the story.

The author did a great job with a sensitive subject. I appreciated the lack of details, though, and don’t feel like it took away from anything by choosing not to go in-depth with the traumatic event.
With each brother having been in the system, they have all experienced a painful past. So, bringing up my opinion, without giving too many details, is not a spoiler. We’ve spent time with Owen in previous books. He’s made comment after comment regarding ‘shrinks’. So, we knew we would be finding out why when his book came around.

I loved Owen and Howie together. They are both such sweet, lovable guys. Howie was exactly the kind of man Owen deserves. He’s so patient, sweet, and kind. They’re chemistry isn’t too shabby either. Nope.

This was another well written book in a wonderful series. Aiden Bates has done a tremendous job with the storyline, characters, and how interconnected each book is to the one that follows, as well as keeping in step with the ones that came before. There’s no misstep. I cannot wait to read Sean’s book. I have my suspicions who his love interest is. I could be wrong—but I hope not.

After attending a fundraising event, Dr. Scott Howard (“Howie”) was ready to go home and get into a hot shower. A paramedic who had held his attention, Owen, had been at the same event and he wanted to get away from the man he was crushing on. But his car won’t start. Knowing nothing at all about car engines, he raised the hood and touched everything that looked important – until a hot pipe made him hiss in pain. Owens’s voice from behind startled him and he smacked his head on the hood amid his curses, much to Owen’s amusement. Owen checked the engine and told him the car was badly maintained with many other problems pending. He needed a mechanic to go over the whole thing, but it was not capable of being driven right now. So Owen offered him a ride home. They both like the same kind of music, so each enjoyed the ride, even through the heavy traffic. When Howie had to adjust himself, Owen’s sharp gaze caught the action. And when he parked his vehicle, they passionately kissed, not remembering who moved first. Then Howie opened his door and asked if Owen was coming in with him!

Both of them felt the sizzling chemistry between them, more intense than with anyone else. But an innocent remark reminded Owen that Howie was still a psychiatrist and therapist, and his whole body felt his repulsion. He had to get out of there. His stomach spasmed with cramps, and he commented, “This never happened,” as he quickly left.

Back at the Vanguard Tower, the guys were ready for an intervention. They knew something was off for the past 3 months with Owen. Military-trained Matt wouldn’t be leaving until he got answers. Brax mentioned his session with Howie that afternoon, and how miserable Howie was over a guy who didn’t want a relationship. As the guys talked about it, Owen jumped up from the couch and ran to the food pantry to get out of sight. But Matt’s voice behind him asked what was going on, reminding him he had been acting odd for 3 months and was just now standing in a dark pantry. Owen couldn’t tell him about Howie and the issue with Owen’s despising shrinks. That would open up things he didn’t want to address. But as the guys ate the meal, Brax suggested they set Howie up on a date to help him get over “the guy”. His first choice for a date was – Owen! Owen began to choke and Richie got water for him. He snarled out NO to the date… he had too much going on, he said, even though he had done nothing at all for 3 months. Matt stared at him. When Brax shrugged then suggested Hunter, the choking got worse. And Matt watched jealousy cross Owen’s face and flare in his eyes! If Owen could get over whatever bothered him about shrinks, there just might be something going on there. Would Owen open up?

This story is really outstanding. It touches on so many things that many may not ever think about. I love the brothers who are always there for each other. The dialog was natural and perfect. This entire book was amazing. Grab your copy and prepare to spend your time with the best family one could ever hope for. Love rules in their family, no doubt about it!

I loved Owen as much as I thought and Howie was super sweet. I just wished that Owen wasn’t such a hard shell to crack and it kind of doesn’t really make much sense. For the strong brotherly foundation that was established in the previous books I seriously doubt none of the brothers would know Owens secret. The ending was so stressful but it really brought everything together. I wasn’t a fan of the epilogue tbh and kinda wasn’t a fan of the fact that the series just ended like that.

I felt so sorry for Owen. He really wanted everyone to think that he had everything together, and psychiatrists just scared him, but Howie, he didn't. I can understand why Owen would want to avoid all psychaitrists, considering, but it's also kind of a little unfair for him to paint Howie with that same brush, since he hadn't seen any of that behavior from Howie.

This is a good series.

This series is a total triumph for the wonder that is Aiden Bates. I was a bit worried after I read his last new book, as I really didn't like it, but he has totally restored my faith because this is the best in the series and is seriously the hottest of his books I've read!

Whilst this whole series is definitely based around hurt/comfort this book works really well with the theme using the backgrounds of both characters to the maximum. These two have been met previously but just fleetingly in the other books; this time round they take centre stage in their own story of sizzling magnetic chemistry that pulls them together whilst they struggle to keep it in their pants and keep it together!! What we get is basically an amazing piece of wordsmithery that you won't want to put down!!!

As with the other books the family situation is central to the story, providing support and structure to the characters but also the story. There is a place for everyone and everyone is in the right place at the right time be they a black and white kitten or a chubby faced baby.

AB has upped the sexy stakes with this book as well so if you're easily shocked or offended this isn't going to be for you; but if you've read the rest of the series you know what you're going to get but turn that gas up to full and that's where the flame is set!!!

I loved this book; I'm so pleased to see Aiden Bates back to his best. I totally recommend this book and the series as a whole xx

A Beautifully Heartfelt Story! Great Narration🎧
Rise and Fall
Vanguard Towers, Book 5
By: Aiden Bates
Narrated by: Guillaume Dubois

I enjoyed this book immensely, it is the fifth book of the “Vanguard Towers” series and my third, I have loved each one of those books, mainly for the wonderful characters and their storylines. Also love how how the Vanguard Towers came about, a family in the making of their choice, with great bonds and camaraderie amongst the brothers. This book is Owen and Dr. Scott Howard’s story, there is great chemistry between these two but a relationship would not be that easy. Dr Howard is Owen’s brother’s psychiatrist, but that is not the only complication for Owen, a bad experience in his past has left him damaged and broken, he is not sure he could get past that. His brothers sense something is wrong with Owen and he finally opens up about things. I loved how everything played out in this book, the story is well written and beautifully plotted, there is plenty of drama, heartfelt emotions, some angst and a wonderful romance. Aiden Bates, thank you for another fantastic story & emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Guillaume Dubois continues to do an awesome job portraying the characters, bringing them to life and humanizing them with their emotions. He gives each character their own distinct voice making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. I love how he takes each role and makes it his own, sounding believable in that role and just as I picture the character to sound. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen🎧

Thank you #GRR

Howie and Owen are amazing!   This is a really touching story of two men who have such amazing chemistry and incredible hearts.  These guys need a few months to work through the challenges of being together. Howie is an amazing good guy that we have met in a previous book as Brax's psychiatrist.  Owen, our paramedic has suffered trauma at the hands of a psychiatrist and time with Howie triggers him sometimes.  Sharing that trauma with is 'brothers' and Howie is a process and it is heartbreaking.

Howie and Owen are steamy, emotional, sweet, funny, romantic, gutsy, and just huggable!    I really love their journey and the amazing heart that both of these guys bring to making this a wonderful relationship.  I laughed, cried and sighed with these guys as they found their way through the struggles to their HEA.  Our main characters, Howie and Owen are very likable and well developed which gives the reader a real sense of connection to these guys  There is plenty of steam in their connection and lots of laughter, real talks and just the right amount of romance for these men.

This is book five of the Vanguard Towers series and I recommend reading them in sequence for best enjoyment.  These are recurring characters with overlapping stories and each of the previous books are wonderful.  I am so looking forward to the next book!  .

I was gifted this book from the author and I freely give my honest opinion and review.

A sweet romance with a confusing ending

Howie and Owen's romance was much more emotional than I expected, and I really enjoyed listening to their journey. It wasn't exactly a secret that Owen had something against shrinks, but I was somehow still not prepared to find out the reason behind his hatred. It was difficult to listen to him battle with his emotional trauma while trying to make a relationship with Howie work, but I'm really glad he didn't give up. Owen and Howie had fantastic chemistry together, and it was so much fun to listen to them spend time together. It did make my heart ache a little to see how wide open and in love Howie was when Owen remained guarded, but luckily Owen managed to get there in the end. Sure, it took a disastrous and terrifying set of events for him to come to terms with his past, but Owen proved in the end that he was 100% committed to Howie. The main thing that confused me about this story was the epilogue. Throughout the story, the author appeared to be setting up potential storylines for the other brothers, but then the tone of the big wedding at the end made everything feel so conclusive and final. I was actually looking forward to seeing how those last straggler brothers would fall in love, but now I'm not even sure I'll get to hear their stories at all?

Paramedic Owen has insane chemistry with psychiatrist Howie— but he also has a traumatic past with a psychiatrist who abused him. Trying to balance attraction turned to caring with a need to protect himself from deeply ingrained wounds is the major source of conflict for most of the book, and it’s pretty much impossible not to empathize with both Owen and Howie. That said, I’m a bit blown away by the fact that no one, including the therapist he’s dating, seems to care much about WHY Owen has a problem with psychiatrists or therapy, despite the many, many clues. To their credit, when they find out, they react in supportive, caring ways, but still. Overall, Howie and Owen have great chemistry and a solid emotional bond. Traumas, both past and present, test and strengthen their bonds, and their HEA is well earned.

This book is part of a series, and while it’s possible to read it as a standalone, the last chapter in particular is going to have special significance to readers who are familiar with previous stories. I love the found family dynamic of the Towers, and I really enjoy the web of supportive relationships between all the brothers, which is at the heart of all the books.

What is up with Owen?
It was obvious that Owen and Dr Scott Howard Howie have chemistry but there was something holding Owen back. He makes funny jokes about Howie being a psychiatrist but doesn’t explain why. But the chemistry between these two is just off the charts and when they’re alone they can’t keep their hands off each other. The passion is electric, but can Howie put aside Owens total lack of support for his job??
I’ve been waiting for this one I’ve liked Howie that we have met in previous books. I only wanted what’s good for the brothers. I know that the brothers have been through so much already but I guessed something had happened to Owen and I knew I’d get upset. When Owen was about to open up to why he has his views I even put the book down and walked away because I really got to care about these two in previous chapters but I couldn’t stay away for long. This book had me totally hooked from the very start and They just make an outstanding couple. Brilliant read!! I have so enjoyed this series

Owen loves being a paramedic. One thing he loves more than his job is his crazy family. So when Owen has a hard time fighting his attraction to his brother’s therapist, Howie, he’s sees a potential for some complications. Of course the first being Howie is Owen’s brother’s therapist. The second is that Owen just can’t get past Howie’s job as a therapist. An old trauma from Owen’s past is what’s really holding him back from being with Howie.

Howie knows something is holding Owen back from their relationship. But he can’t get over how much it hurts when Owen dismisses his job or changes the subject when Howie brings something up about work. If Owen can’t accept his job then how can they have a future.

Owen and Howie have obvious chemistry. There’s no denying that. I didn’t find myself gravitating towards their story like I did in the other books. I felt there was an absence of emotion in this story. The trauma Owen went through seemed more like an afterthought. I’m not saying the book wasn’t enjoyable but I felt the emotion was missing that would have taken the book to the next level.

I have really enjoyed this series and Owen and Howie’s story was no different. The only reason I didn’t give this book five stars was because of the ending. The ending really felt rushed and almost like the author was wrapping up any loose ends there might be, as though this were the last book in the series, which I really hope is not the case. Through the book there were hints that Matt and Hunter had something going on but then out of what felt like nowhere, Matt ends up with Owen’s coworker and Hunter is dating some coworker of his all of a sudden. Then there’s Sean and Shane and where did that come from?! It just really seems random that Shane, a homophobic coworker of Richie and Cam’s, would end up being such close friends with Sean. By the end of the book the focus was completely off the main characters and introducing random characters to the plot out of nowhere. Typically the author has ended each book with a hints about which of the brothers would next be featured but in this case, it just seems like the author just wanted to wrap up the series. Again, I really hope that isn’t the case.

Rise and fall by Aiden Bates is the 5th and last book in the vanguard towers series which is a tower built by 7 adopted brothers. The 5 book series follows each of the brothers except the oldest twins.
This book follows Owen who is a paramedic who had issues about therapy and therapists due to do a bad experience and Howie who is a therapist and their romance.
I didn't really like this book. The whole owen situation i didn't like at all. Howie was very sweet but i didn't really feel the chemistry in them. This book really should've been called Push and pull because there were so many times that either owen or Howie pulled away. Now for the pros, i did how Howie's arc was handled and what it resulted in. the epilogue and the last few chapters definitely saved it for me i was in love with that. I also wanted a book from Sean and Matt's perspective but the epilogue did take care of that so I liked it and bumped it up to 4 stars. I am sad I won't have an Aiden Bates series to read anymore but I definitely loved the Hell's Ankhor series better than this.
If you are interested in the Hell's Ankhor series, it's a motorcycle club Romance and the first book is Blade.

Owen and Howie are a great addition to this heartwarming series focusing on a tight-knit family of foster brothers. Owen very clearly has a problem with psychiatrists and I didn’t love how he kept making cracks at Howie because it was his profession. He clearly knew that didn’t mean Howie was a bad person, but he basically used his past trauma as an excuse to be a bit of a jerk. Thankfully, the character is written so that he’s aware of this and actually tries to reign it in as he gives a relationship with Howie a shot. Unfortunately, his version of doing so is just to avoid talking about it. It takes persistence on Howie’s part, and like the others in the series, some serious talk from his brothers, to make him see that he’ll need to finally deal with his past in order to move on with his future. I loved how Howie never wavered in his devotion to Owen! He fits in with Owen’s family seamlessly, and is so incredibly understanding. An overall good read with a touch of angst, a lot of heat, and a good amount of sweetness!

Howie and Owen have an intense attraction but Owen keeps denying it due to traumatic past experiences. They have a journey of starts and stops, laughs, super steamy sexy times, panic, fears, struggles, emotional moments, healing, amazing found family, so much love, and a hard earned but satisfying HEA.
Both main characters have great qualities, are fully developed, and likeable. All the main characters from the previous books are at least mentioned in this book but it is not necessary to have read those books to enjoy this one - although each one has a depth and a great sense of found family love and togetherness.
What I loved most is the genuine connection between Owen and Howie as well as all the brothers and significant others, they show how a family should be - loving, caring, supportive, and willing to do whatever they can to help each other. I laughed at the creative cursing and smiled throughout the whole epilogue. I would definitely recommend this book.

IF you are familiar with the men living in the Vanguard Tower, you will know that they consist of strong men, who came out of the system and built their own family, fiercely protecting each other. But each of them carries some scars, that make it a little more difficult to be with their partner of choice.
Owen is no exception. It almost seems like irony of fate that he has to fall for the psychiatrist of his brother Brax, after he was molested by a psychiatrist when he had been a child.
Learning to work through his rather mixed feelings and the trauma of his youth, is a large part of this book. And his choice Howie, whom you may already have met before in one of the other books - has his own insecurities after he was thrown out onto the street by his parents when he came out to them.
I love the connections and the support of the men in this family, wishing there were more men like these, open, honest and courageous.

This book rocks! The next wonderful story about the brothers of the Vanguard Towers and this time it's Owen's turn. Having had a traumatic experience with therapists in his past, he doesn't want anything to do with Howie, a psychiatrist who is currently treating his brother Brax. But Owen can't seem to resist him. They will have one night together and it will have Owen running away. But he can't stay away and soon the two are back together again. Things are good as long as Owen doesn't think about Howie's job. One day, that will change. He will admit to his past experience and it will break the two men apart. Howie won't leave it alone though and he will seek out Owen's brother Matt to get justice. An accident will make Owen see just how much he cares for Howie and it will bring the two men back together and get them started down the path towards their happily ever after.

This is the fifth (and maybe last?) book in the Vanguard Towers Series. I have really enjoyed this series that highlights finding and creating your own family. All the 'brothers' have been finding partners, and this time it's Owen's turn. He is attracted to Dr. Howard (Howie), but issues from his past put a roadblock in the way of anything more than a hook-up. For his part, Howie has long loved Owen, but does not understand why Owen is so hot and cold to him. Is there any chance for these two to find an HEA? Can patience and understanding build a bridge? I love all the brothers and partners and the way they all joke, tease, and cajole each other (not to mention stealing each others' food). Even more, I love the way they all come together when one of the 'family' is in trouble or needs help or emotional support. Great series!

Don't run! Stop and talk! Dr Howie Scott, was lusting after Owen after he first met him. He was wary because of the potential ethical dilemma, being Brax's brother. He felt he could compartementalize easily. He had a one nighter with Owen and thought there would be more. Owen has a 'thing' about psychiatrists and can't really see beyond that. He is dragging an extremely steamer trunk behind him. Can Howie overcome his insecurities? Will Owen, set his baggage down, or at least talk about it? Will we get a wedding? It is wise to read the previous stories to give context. And, because the stories are enjoyable! How do the VT feel about Owen and Howie? Sean came home. Can the brothers deal with him? What does Matt do in his room? I think each couple is the best one, until I read the next story. The brothers are absolutely, fantastic! Great story! I'm rooting for Owen. Excellent characters. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The brothers at the Vanguard Towers have my total love. This series is real special and the more and more stories come out about the individual brothers finding love, I get all excited. This one with Owen was real special. The connection Owen had with Howie was super intense and bittersweet. Owen with his hangups with therapists trying to look past it with his growing affection for Owen who is a therapist. Their constant push and pull until we got to the climax was very angsty but I enjoyed the ride. I had my laughter and also I had my tears. This was emotional but very enjoyable. Oh mannnnnnnnnnnn...that ending with the wedding did me in. Goodness that right there wrapped up everything for me...it gave us readers what this series is all about...togetherness, acceptance, family and most important, love. I hope we get more stories ...there's three more brothers to go...LOL

Oh, Aiden how you did it again. I have truly enjoyed this entire series and if there are no more books, this was a great way to end the series.

Owen is a beautiful man with an unsettling past. Letting people in is not a problem, but letting a shrink in is. Howie is the perfect man for Owen to let in, but why can't Owen do just that? There are so many things he likes about Howie, especially the attraction he feels to the man. Will that attraction be enough to let the past stay in the past or will he continue to live a life on his own? He will need the help of his brothers to see the right path to take.

The author did an amazing job of dealing with a sensitive subject and the characters were developed in a way the reader could relate to. I hope this won't be the last in this series, but if it is thank you for giving us a happy ending.

Owen has a deep-rooted distrust of physiatrists and therapists so he is conflicted by his attraction for Dr. Howie, his brother Brax's shrink. When he offers Howie a ride the tension breaks in a hot one night stand. Except neither of the men can forget that encounter. This is a story of fighting the past to gain a future. The cast of characters from Vanguard Towers is delightful in its diversity, volatility, and caring. This story handles a delicate subject with honesty and empathy. It is a wonderful story with well-drawn characters and a back and forth relationship that keeps the reader engrossed. I am just hoping that the epilogue is not hinting at a quick end to the series - the twins and Hunters need their stories, even though Matt is linked at the end of this book. This is intense, emotional and sweet. Howie and Owen have a one night stand, which makes Howie think that Owen has finally decided to stop being a snarky tease. But that's not quite the case, Owen just can't fight the overwhelming attraction between them for once. The next day things are back to how they were. When everyone pushes Owen to date Howie, he gives in, but he can't get over his derision for physiatrists, so he does all he can to pretend that Howie isn't one. Owen's reaction comes from his personal experience, which is explained, and is something he never told his brothers about. Sean shows up finally, but it's under a shocking circumstance. Matt's job is revealed, and it's nothing like what I expected it to be. I love this series, the family dynamics and individual characters are so interesting, and their relationships are entertaining. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Rise and Fall is Book 5 in the Vanguard Towers series. I love this series and this book was a wonderful addition. Owen and Howie are so great for each other but there's one problem, Owen had some childhood abuse and the fact that Howie is psychiatrist is triggering to him. I love how Howie does everything he can to help Owen. I also love how the brothers come together and are always there for each other. Though this book can be enjoyed on its own, it's better when read/listened to in order. The end could be confusing if you're not familiar with the other books. I recommend this wonderful series of found family. They all have come a long way to find their happy endings.
Narrator Guillaume Dubois does an amazing job in bringing these characters to life. You can really tell he enjoys what he does.

This a fun and actually sweet addition to the series!!! Owen and Howie are both so insecure when it comes to how they feel about each other for successful and tough guys! Owen definitely needs some help from Howie and his friends and family to get over a bad past experience. And of course, Everyone is here to help!! Howie and Owen are a steamy pair right out the gate, but his develops into a sweet and steamy relationship as they overcome their own insecurities and find themselves with each other. Told from Both of their POV we get to feel what they are each feeling. The friends and family are great Comic relief throughout!!! I received and ARC of this story and I recommend you grab this one and read it along with the rest of this fun and romantic series!

The Vanguards Brothers are back.

Owen and Howie's story is the fifth book in this series, and it has everything for you. Guilt, Angst, Love, Hurt, Anger, Shame and hatred of shrinks.

These two should never be together, it can't work out, but they have chemistry. As always, all the Vanguard brothers turn up as cameos, well, some of them more than cameos. We do get a HEA.

A good book and great narration. I did listen at 1.25 speed on Audible.

Absolutely loved this book! My heart went out to Owen for everything he went through! Howie was perfect for him! They were just so sweet together! They really had things to work through though. All the brothers and their partners in this series were just amazing! Such a loving and protective family! This series is just awesome and you can’t help but fall in love with all the characters! Their stories just pull at your heart! The big scene at the end with Sean and Matt had me crying! Absolutely amazing! I very highly recommend this whole series!
