Bay Winchester has battled ghosts, shades, poltergeists … and sometimes her own family. It’s the latter giving her fits now. Well, and Hemlock Cove’s younger set of course. Bay thought the worst was behind her when she modified the memories of four tempestuous teenagers bent on stealing magic and wielding it in a tyrannical manner. Unfortunately for her, when one of those teenagers ends up dead behind the inn her father owns, things start to spiral. The girl’s death is ritual in fashion, bloody runes painted on the trees, and Bay can’t wrap her head around exactly what has happened. Then things get worse when dark figures start appearing in windows, black ghosts threatening Bay and her family at every turn. Between the horror haunting Hemlock Cove and the annoying presence of Bay’s former boss and his current fiancée, who just so happens to be a distant relative, Bay has her hands full … and that’s before her cousin Clove’s baby starts displaying a rather interesting skillset that is going to force accommodations within the family. All Bay wants is a little break to plan her wedding and look forward to happily ever after with her fiancé Landon Michaels. What’s she’s going to get is a whole lot of trouble. Bay’s growing powers are drawing in a new element of evil. It’s going to take everything she has – and a little help from Aunt Tillie – to fight the ultimate battle. Survival isn’t a given but Bay is determined to make it to her big day. No matter what.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
This book was written with a lot of filler material. Too many pages wasted on Brandon and Bay professing their love for each other, wasted pages on Tillie’s leggings, and I am over Bay’s martyr complex. I decided to read this book because I was intrigued about Clove’s baby- it had the makings of an great storyline -The small parts about the baby were excellent. The rest of the story was not worth the time I wasted reading it. Why? Same old plot.
I have enjoyed most of the series but I feel the author is stuck in rut and can’t find a new plot. Someone is murdered, Bay feels responsible, Bay gets attacked and aunt Tillie saves her once again book after book. Add in the over kill of repeated material previously used in ALL the preceding books and I have to wonder if the author is even writing these books or is a template being used. I am hoping that if there is a book about Clove’s baby, that it is unique, fresh and murder free! They are endless possibilities for the story and hopefully after 18 books with the same plot the author will pursue some of them.
OMG please, enough with the insecurity crap between Bay and Landon. It really takes away from the story. The " don't ever leave me" is just agitating at this point.
Prelude to a Witch has a lot to do with the previous book. It brings in some of the same characters and villains, just with a twist. I feel like these two books could have actually been just one, but that's okay. I thought this one was really good, and it was really interesting to see the new dynamic between all of the women in the family. I'm excited to read more.
My Wicked Witches of the Midwest are back! There’s so much backstory in this one-I totally soaked it up. Bay and Landon are getting so close to the wedding and Clove is about to pop. Aunt Tillie’s leggings are only getting more epic and there’s another book coming! I’m a sucker for this series and I think I enjoyed it even more after the long break between books. Keep ‘em coming, Amanda!
It's good to see Bay owning her power and Landon learning to ease up on trying to corral her. The mystery is thoroughly engrossing but the story had a surprising and unsatisfyingly abrupt ending that leaves too much unanswered. What's up with the baby? Who are the seven? What plans do they have for the baby? These are just a few of the questions I'm eager for Book 19 to address.
Another interesting visit to Hemlock cove. The girls are back at their misdeeds and this time they seem to have Brian and Rosemary rendering assistance. Something is definitely not right about them all. And when a profiler, who used to be Landon’s girl friend shows up, they try to hide some obviously strange goings on from her.
Another delightful installment in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest cozy mystery series. I just adore these books (I’d hope so since I’ve now read like 30 stories with full length novels and shorts). The town is a delight, the town characters give off that same Stars Hollow vibe (but witchier). The Winchester banter is consistently snappy. I love the shifting power dynamic between Bay and Aunt Tillie. I think that will be the coolest thing to continue to explore in the series.
This is book 18 in a series, so I hope no one jumps right to this book. I promise it’s much more fun to start at the beginning, but I would note that this mystery is much more intertwined with the last installment than usual: The Witch is Back (Wicked Witches of the Midwest #17) .
Magic: 4.5/5
Over the course of the books, Bay has grown steadily more powerful. She’s had to make tough decisions on how to use her power. I love that it sort of keeps growing, and now, she’s starting to be looked to as the magical head of the family (don’t worry Aunt Tillie is still alive and well). I think this will be my favorite subplot to watch, to see how their relationship continues to evolve as Bay continues to take charge.
For a cozy mystery series, there is also really no end to new magical fronts that the Winchesters get to explore. Obviously with Bay’s powers, there is a lot happening with ghosts, but we always get to explore a new facet of the paranormal.
Overall: 4/5
Obviously, I’m highly invested with the number of these books I’ve read at this point, but I wouldn’t have gotten this far if the stories weren’t consistently fun and entertaining, and they are always both. I’m from Michigan, living in California, so I am always eagerly awaiting the next dose of northern lower Michigan witchy small town life.
Why does EVERY book have to end up in the air? Why does Landon have to talk about bacon and sex in every chapter? Why does Landon insert himself into EVERYTHING?! He’s an ass. Why in the WORLD would you make the love interest of your heroine an ASS?!? I can’t take it anymore. He’s smug, he’s cocky, he’s an ass. I have never wished for a fictional death more.
Where in the hell did Hannah go? What about the meeting?
If the author horny and hungry while writing? Oh all the cozies I’ve read, these are turning into the absolute worst. I loathe the character of Landon with every fiber of my being.
Do yourself a favor if you try these books. DON’T BINGE THEM! It’s too much.
I do enjoy time spent with the Winchesters. This book is darker than others in the series. Shades are evil dark spirits. The violence is more intense. That isn't why I gave it 4 stars verses 5. Please make Landon mature already! I find his whining, talk of bacon, and need th have his macho ego stroked tedious. I actually skip some of the dialogue when Bay is doing what she does and he can'tdeal with it. How long would a strong woman (let alone powerful witch) put up with a man that cannot handle her strength and let her be? Looks only go.so far.
I enjoy the storylines but I’m going to quit the series because i can no longer stand the dynamic between the main couple. Landon has been turned from a confidant man to a whining smotherer who incessantly says he cannot live without Bay, and can’t even sit next to her without his hand on her head or back. The inexplicable thing is every other character finds them sickening but theres no letup in their behavior in front of others. Too bad really. The stories themselves are good.
This was one of the better stories in the series. It wasn’t completely obvious who or what was the villain. That made it a much more enjoyable read. It was light-hearted, but also had a great message.
That the Brian, Rosemary and Willa storylines were finally tied up was well done. I’m not sure about allowing Rosemary off the hook for the murders her body committed, as they had Brian on the hook for the ones his body did. Maybe they didn’t do the actual murders, but they left themselves open to evil entities, that should be enough of a reason to make them responsible for the deaths. Because of their lax and indifferent attitudes, it cost several people their lives, they should be responsible for that.
I look forward to more stories in the series, with the birth of the next generation and the wedding of Landon and Bay.
I will say that I do enjoy some crossover stories with the other series the author creates, but it’s getting a bit overdone. Not every book is required to mention the other series. In this one they mentioned, 3 if not 4 of the other ongoing series. That’s just excessive. Either bring the characters into this story or don’t bring them up. Also, why must each main character for each series be the ultimate in power. They can’t all be super powerful, and just because you call them a different name doesn’t mean they aren’t really all the same. Witch, Mage, Bruja, Reaper, or whatever mix bag of supernatural you create, can’t you just make a somewhat strong character and it’s not that they have amazing powers but it’s what they do with them that should make the difference? A small touch here and there might do a lot more to improve life on earth and with people’s lives then making a character that can control the Spirits and be super-witch.
Also hopefully when the next generation makes their appearance let’s hope it’s not as some super-witch baby. Having the mother’s stomach glow as the baby reached out and saved Bay was just ridiculous. It also was a bit of a ripoff from the original Charmed TV series, when Piper was pregnant.
Absolutely one of the best supernatural cozy mystery series out there
This is one of the best supernatural cozy mystery series out there. An extraordinarily spectacular cast of characters and an extraordinary storyline. A small little town in northern Michigan re-branded itself to become a catchy tourist which town. A number of years back. The whole town please like and they are all witches. Well most of them are humans there is a family of witches that live in the town. There are also a few witches here in there in the area. The Winchester family has lived there for a long time they run a bed-and-breakfast in in the town. Three sisters run the end. Their aunt named Tilly is a very powerful witch and is the matriarch of the family. The three witches have a daughter apiece and those three daughters also are witches and most of the stories center around them. Bay Winchester owns the local newspaper and her cousins clove and fissile on a local magic/which store in town. Follow along as a battle evil doers of the magical type as well as some that are human as well. And eclectic cast of characters that will keep you coming back for more every time. Check it out
I was so looking forward to another instalment of Wicked Witches of the Midwest. I thoroughly enjoy the Winchester family dynamics, the snark and the magical adventures and Tillie is magnificently over the top. Unfortunately, the book did not come up to my expectations - too much emotional baggage between Bay and Landon and Bay’s feelings of guilt. There were so many nuggets of promise dangled in this book: Clove’s baby, residual magic, shades in the glass & Bay’s growing powers. I couldn’t see the purpose of Hannah, the profiler - she was a flimsy distraction. Amelia as an issue was not addressed. Landon’s boss being called to Hemlock Cove was not explored - so many loose ends and too swift an ending
Witchy Winchester drama, evil ghosts, magic coming from all sides some new and good so dark and evil... and it’s just another day in Hemlock Cove.
I always love a good visit to Hemlock Cove especially to see what Aunt Tillie is up to and I have to say I’ve never been disappointed... Aunt Tillies outfits alone are enough to have me rolling around laughing.
Clove is just about ready to burst out her baby, Bay and Landon are nearing nuptials day and Thistle is Thistle lol
Hannah was a very interesting new character!! I’d love to meet her again, maybe in her own series the idea of an fbi profiler with paranormal ties would be amazing.
As always Hemlock Cove was amazing and I’m looking forward to the next story.
As always, a good read by Lee. I thought for sure Clove’s baby would save the day. Clove should name her baby Pepper or Crimson because she’ll probably have red hair. Also, Crimson and Clover… Anyway, the baby is exhibiting powers so I figured the baby would somehow get control of the shades. I cannot stand people who are evil in books, but there usually has to be evil in a story with good, so the power is balanced. As usual, Clove is irrational and a complete whiny kvetch. So annoying. I’m glad she wasn’t a very active character in this read, but neither was Thistle and I sorta really like Thistle. Oh well. Everything turned out fine and Aunt Tillie helped save the day, per the usual. Can’t wait for the Bay and Landon wedding book coming out in November!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read this book in 2 days....it would have been 1 if I didn't have other things to do. I didn't want to put the book down it was so good! I especially loved the Mandalorian reference....that had me laughing out loud last night!! I really did enjoy this book as I have all the other books in this series. I gave this 4 stars only because there wasn't an epilogue with the wedding.....sigh oh well hopefully the next book will have it.....which has me chomping at the bit to read it! Great job Amanda M. Lee on another funny/intense/cheesy at times wonderful book!
You'd think after so many books in a series the storyline would get boring. Not in this series by any means. Bay is trying to plan a fast approaching wedding. When strange shades show up & become violent towards Bay everything is on hold. When the bod of Paisley Gilmore is discovered behind the Dragonfly, her dad's hotel, Bay & Landon must figure out the connection, if any, between the murder & the shades as well as deal with an increasingly vengeful Brian. Brian is bent on reclaiming his newspaper & destroying Bay in the process. Who will survive the looming battle?
I have to agree with a lot of the other reviews that Bay's insecurity is getting old. She is showing growth but it is painfully slow. I also don't think it would be in Aunt Tillie's nature to keep using the leggings as a form of punishment for Bay's mom. With that being said, I still love this series. I love the fun snarky moments. I love seeing Bay's powers grow and see her being strong and assertive (and not insecure!). I'm excited that she's lined up a crossover with Moonstone Bay (in 2022 sadly) and the series has ongoing crossovers with Two Broomsticks. I think the crossovers bring a fresh story and fresh characters that we wouldn't get otherwise.
This book just continues on with the fallout of the last investigation (Marcus’s attack, etc.), however I just wasn’t as into this story as I’d hoped to be. Willa and Rosemary are back, Brian has revenge on the brain, and Amelia and her little clique are acting more like budding sociopaths than grieving friends. Anyway, I’m hoping that Willa won’t be a reoccurring character as she just throws everything off kilter. Looking forward to Clove’s baby arriving, especially after we discover baby Winchester has some nifty tricks, and wondering if Hannah may pop up in future books?
This book is now one of my favourites of the series. The witty banner was top notch. I enjoyed the mystery in looking for to the next book in the series. I enjoyed the mystery and am looking for to the next book in the series. I can't wait for the wedding and the honeymoon, not to mention the birth of Clove's baby. The marriage proposal was really cool. Enjoyed that book immensely as well. Lots of moves are made in this book. Got some answers left over from previous book arc. Highly recommend.
When Paisley's body is found down behind the Dragonfly Inn and Bay notices strange runes painted in blood on the trees Landon and Chief Terry know they are dealing with something paranormal once again.
As Landon's boss decides to send in a profiler they are going to have to try and hide Bay's involvement and powers. As her necromancy skills develop she's going to need to put them all to use as these spirits are being used for evil. Shades are following Bay and it's going to be harder to work out how to overcome the dangers ahead.
Clove is about to pop, freaking out about it, and eating everything in sight. Bay is ready to throw together her wedding and get it done. Thistle is in a very bad mood. And then a bunch of very irritating chickens come home to roost. I mean, if you’re that cool, powerful and determined, there will always be whiners who wanna take you down. Look for subtle shifts in magic power and family dynamics. And a whole lot of peeps trying to give the Winchesters a (totally undeserved) comeuppance. Oh, and there’s a great little peek into the past.
With this book we continue the story of Bae and the Winchester family. This book follows the continuing story line from the previous books so it is important to read the seri a from the start. The story is developing nicely and new aspects are added with each new book. We have a good mystery, some fine action passages and lots of romance between Bae and Landon. I couldn’t put this book down and completed it very quickly. I was sad when it ended and can’t wait for the next one.
I always enjoy catching up with Bay, Landon and the rest of the gang in Hemlock Cove. Bay and Landon are weeks away from their wedding and Clove is due to have her baby any minute but that doesn't stop the mayhem when evil shades hit town. The snark is deep and lots of old family secrets are revealed as the mystery wraps up. I can't wait for the next installment.
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this latest in the WWotM series. I always feel like I’m visiting with old friends. The characters are so well developed they feel like real people you’d love to have in your life. Do start with the first book and read them in order. Like all good series, the developing storylines are progressive. Bay and Landon’s marriage is coming up soon, and I can’t wait to find out what magic and mayhem tries to interfere! Enjoy!
This one was really dark for a Winchester book. Bay’s world is getting much more dangerous on the paranormal level. Most of the early books had bad guys who were human. The last few books swung heavily into a paranormal villain range. While it makes the story more exciting, it’s not as much fun. However Bay’s growing powers meant it was too easy to beat ordinary humans who turned bad, so I suppose the switch was inevitable. I do recommend this book.
Another awesome book by the author. So many twist and turns, I can't wait to see how wedding plans go and what happens with the birth of Clove's baby, what powers will she have? We knew Brian and Rosemary were up to no good and it was interesting to see how that played out, again I can't wait for the next book! They always keep me guessing and make me snicker out loud!!
Prelude to a Witch (Wicked Witches of the Midwest book 18
This is my favorite Author, my favorite series, my favorite characters. I just love this book. As I have all 18 books. I highly recommend all her book and all her different series. Amanda knows how to tell a great story and her characters you want to know them or meet them. Once you start her books you will not put them down. Diana Romano
Can it get any more complicated? Ghosts are one thing and even a poltergeist is better then want is coming for Bay the Winchester witches. They handle it the way they always do, by the seat of their pants. Oh and I can't find the leggings Aunt Follow is always wearing, I think they would be great to have. I hope Landon and Bays wedding is coming up in the next book. Can't wait.
