Sons of Britain #5

Charmed by Mischief

Rate this book
A restless rogue. A virgin with a secret.
Sometimes fate demands a little shift in perspective…

Safir has a life most men would kill for.
Adventure! Glory! A different partner in his bed every night! ...Until his coin runs out.

Which happens with alarming regularity.

But he’s not the sort of fellow to save for the future.

Especially if it’s unlikely to involve the proud but shy giant he’s never managed to seduce.

Nearly broke and with a long winter stretching before him, Safir’s only amusement is collecting trinkets for the clever magpie that visits his chamber each night.

+

Morien has a plan most men would laugh at.
He wants a peach orchard, and he’s willing to wait for a man who can give him one.

Which, granted, hasn’t happened yet.

But he’s not the sort to give up his dream—or his virginity—for just anyone.

Especially a charming rogue of a sell-sword who thinks only of the present moment.

No matter how many shiny baubles the scoundrel might bestow upon him.

+

But when he finds himself stranded at a remote farm with Arthur's men, Morien realizes that tempting Safir with his virtue might be his best chance of hiding his other secret.

The one whose exposure could endanger his kind, challenge Arthur’s bond with Bedwyr as nothing else has, and scatter the men of their inner circle like seeds before a storm…

…or drive them ever closer to a destiny written in the stars.

CHARMED BY MISCHIEF is the 5th novel of SONS OF BRITAIN, a fresh, dark, sexy retelling of Arthurian legend.

Content Notes: This book includes descriptions of battle violence, and a main character’s memory of an intimate situation between his adolescent self and an adult. Readers with specific questions are encouraged to contact the author: mia at miawest dot com.

SONS OF BRITAIN series
They’re a long way from legendary. Amid the volatility of 6th-century Britain, Arthur and Bedwyr are just two young men, born to fight and bound to their warlord by blood and oath. But when fierce hearts collide, loyalties can shift, creating bonds far stronger—and ideas far riskier—than their world may be ready for.

Epic romance, two heroes at a time! My story universe features warriors and blacksmiths, rescue swimmers and hockey players, treasure hunters and time travelers, and quite a few shifters. My favorite kind of hero: a grumpy f*cker who’ll do anything for the man he loves.

Happy reading :)

3.5

Alas, I haven’t enjoyed the shifter storyline as much as I’d hoped 😞 — it felt rushed and a little chaotic — but the romance part was still very nice.

Cai… what the hell did you do? 👀

3.5 stars rounded up. Wasn't aware that this series was going to morph into a shifter-type series, and I have to say that magpies, cats and foxes are not what I normally expect to read about in a shifter series either. Not sure whether I'll now continue with it which is a real shame as I LOVED reading about Arthur and Bed...but as bears?? Probably not so much and it's that turncoat Cai's turn next for a story...

Not sure

I’m not sure if the change to include shifters in this book is responsible for what feels like hesitation, but it felt very slow in the first half and not very focused. I’ve enjoyed this series and the previous but am not crazy about this book. I love good shifter books but this is not one of them.

When I started this series, I didn’t realize that it’s not finished and that the author has 4 more books planned. (For a total of 9 books.) Nor was I expecting shifters when I started the series - although the author’s note at the end of book 1 notes that a paranormal element is added in book 5.

The romance didn’t really work for me - I like to read about characters either falling in love or figuring out how to make their relationship work and I didn’t really get that.

I’m still enjoying this queering of the Arthurian legends and I’m interested in the next book.

The story of Safir and Morien. This is the book that introduces shifters and makes this a more fantastical retelling of the Arthurian legend.

It's fun in that finally magic becomes a part of the story (Merlin isn't or hasn't shown up yet. . .but magic does.)

This story finds Safir ordered by Rhys to go with his son to a villa close to the Saxon border to meet up with Arthur, Bedwyr, Palahmed, and Gawain--wait for instructions.

Well, Safir and Morien find themselves in a kind of teacher/student situation regarding Morien's virginity when Safir figures out about the secret Morien has been hiding when Philip, Arthur's old teacher shows up and introduces shifters into the world after Uthyr and Tiro had been attacked by wolf shifters.

The story gets more tense when Arthur is kidnapped right from their stables by Saxons and Bedwyr decides that Philip should charm him into being a shifter.

Their world turns upside down and fear of the changes seems to pull them apart, then together again with Arthur's kidnapping.

Safir and Morien story fits beautifully into this shifter storyline and makes for very good reading.

The Sons of Britain series takes a major shift when some significant secrets come out. In this book, the MCs, Safir and Morien have always had eyes for each other, but circumstances have kept them unable to pursue a relationship. Morien, for his own reasons, has decided to maintain his virginity. Safir enjoys being with many persons at the local brothel. He also has a cute relationship with a magpie who visits him periodically, giving the birds trinkets now and then.

Safir and Morien are ordered to go to a remote outpost to meet the rest of Arthur's little band. There, they are to await further instructions. Morien is a sell-sword or mercenary, so he is being paid for the job. While they wait, Safir and Morien spend more time together, especially since they must share the one remaining bed. The attraction grows, but how will Safir react if he learns Morien's secret? This book has deep friendships, strong emotions, passion, and a deep love.

Really enjoyed the series up until this book. This one had manufactured tension, characters acting inconsistently, the only plot was a drawn-out seduction scene for the MCs, then everyone turns into shifters. My opinion is a reflection of my disappointment in losing the Arthurian re-imagining. I LOVED this historical realism series and its warrior characters up to #4, but I won't continue with it.

There's, honest to Odin, bird-flirting in this one.
BIRD-FLIRTING.

(Forgive me, Mads, you are not my Safir, you weren't my Palahmed, either, but this is the perfect gif)

I'm convinced Mia West is trying to kill me with adorable queer behaviour, and I love it.

never was a big fan of shapeshifters, I gotta admit (you can call me bedwyr and Palahmeds lol) but it's how Mia made sense of everything and made the whole thing seem cool and ahm ahm.... kinky.
and delving deep into Safir and Morien relationship and them as characters was amazing, fun and emotionally wrecking. love this series so much.

I did not like the shifter switch in this serie. First, it put the emphasis on the shiters more than the HEA of Morien and Safir. Secondly, it was a mess of trying to fuse the previous characters now suddenly shifters. Not well done in my opinion ! I will still read the next ones because I'm curious of Cai's story.

Another enjoyable read, Wasn't sure about the shifters but was soon charmed by them. Sometimes it's a relief to have a slowing down of the action as there has to be a quiet time for the warriors, especially in winter. It was nice to see Safir settling down.

It's another amazing with such a great couple!!!
Safir and Morien were just everything that I hoped for. They had such cute moments but also hot ones. Also, I really enjoyed the new element that the author brought in with this book

Didn't see that coming

Wow so the story took a fantastical turn I wasn't ready for. And totally enjoyed the change. Fun read and looking forward to the rest.

So...book 5 takes a bit of a paranormal turn. But as much as I enjoy paranormal stories and shifters particularly, this did not work as well as I'd hoped. Maybe it's because the first 4 books were more reality-based. Or maybe it's the way shifters pass on their shiftiness. TBH, I find the way this author has chosen to do it to be rather silly.

Also this book felt a little disjointed. I liked it, just not as much as the others and not as much as I hoped I would.
