The early 19th century was a period in German art in which painting played a significant part in the cultural resurgence commonly known as the Romantic Movement. Exciting and original developments emerged, of which the paintings of Caspar David Freiderich and Philipp Otto Runge are the most notable examples, and they are examined here against the background of the great flowering in German literature, philosophy and music.
