FANGS, Vol. 1

Rate this book
"What kind of guy is unlucky enough to get bitten... and survive?"

As the sole survivor of a vampire attack, En wakes up to find that his hair has gone white as snow... and, worse, that he's developed a craving of his own for blood.

Fortunately, the vampire health and welfare organization FANGS is there to help with the transition, and the handsome Ichii steps up as his guardian and mentor. Swept up into a confusing and lonely new world where everyone seems to be hankering for a taste of his "virgin" blood, En must navigate the FANGS pairing system, an arrangement that sets up compatible vampires as mutual feeding partners... and partners in all other ways as well. But what happens when En panics and declares that he'll be paired with Ichii? And what does brooding, rough-around-the-edges Ichii make of his spunky, outgoing new charge?

NO THOUGHTS HEAD EMPTY JUST HOT GAY VAMPIRES DOING HOT GAY VAMPIRE THINGS //aggressively smashes that 5-star rating because I am nothing but a being who exists merely to follow and please my libido's commands and it says 5 stars of excellence so 5 stars of excellence it is 😠💥

Currently incapable of coherent thoughts. Logical and critical thinking whomST? I don't know them 😡🤚🏼🙅🏻‍♀️👎🏼

I blame my BL slump for not having read this sooner. This has feels and spice, has a solid plot that I could not fully decipher because I was busy OGLING but I know that it's there somewhere safely and comfortably tucked beneath my vampire-filtered brain, has secondary characters that had depth and given backstories, and has hot characters WITH FANGS. And said fangs do not retract AT ALL they're there ALL THE TIME EXISTING to fry my brain cells and disable what's left of my cognitive functioN. It also has lots of blood-sucking scenes that I'm here for like god was really TESTING ME I've never been your strongest SOLDIER BRO.

And not to be too nsfw on main but i'm crying horny tears at how exquisite the art is??? Can pregnancy be self-induced? After reading this and just staring at the art for a solid hour I'm 100% certain it is. Billy Balibally's artstyle is just so up my alley with its exquisiteness she never disappoints and I will die on that metaphorical hill. 🔪🔪🔪

TLDR; I desperately need the second volume. 😩😩😩

They might be somewhere in your city. Guys with piercings and slightly pronounced canines, wearing sneakers. They might be sitting right-next to you at a café in the middle of the night.

Thậm chí mình còn nhớ đến Let the Right One In bởi FANGS 1 xây dựng loài ma cà rồng cô đơn như thế, sự chung thủy, các mối quan hệ ngoài luồng.

"But i'm... not that even a good person. I'm not respectable enough... to deserve people doting on me the way they do."

"you're the only one who makes me feel safe, ichii."

"i'll protect you, that's my job."

WHAT THE FUCK- 😭 that was one of the cutest things i've read in a really long time. add in a newbie vampire (en) and the experienced vampire (ichii) who takes care of him? yes please.

this was really short, as manga volumes are but these two already give me complete soulmate vibes. they were so freaking precious.

"i like...
being held.
being special to you, ichii.
that's what i want."

like bye i am not okay 🧍‍♀️ how sweet is that? 🥺 i want to cry. the aggressive cuteness i had towards en in this was unmatched. i want to protect him with everything i have. he deserves all the happiness in the world and for ichii to be the one who takes care of him. if ichii ever hurts him….i will probably cry for the rest of my life. but ichii though? that man was mysterious and hot. his unknown past scares me a bit. it seems like he may have had a past lover or something? who is now gone? and this might prove to be some difficulty for en and ichii's relationship. and it seems like en is starting to feel insecure not knowing where he stands with ichii. so i'm definitely looking forward to learning more about his past and their relationship development.

"why do you have to kiss me every opportunity? and quit grabbing my ass!"
"i've decided to kiss you every conversation. and grab your ass."

😭🥺💘😂

now for sugi. how his husband passed away. i was not expecting that storyline and it brought instant tears to my eyes. it was truly heartbreaking.

"you can't sit here...."
"this is...his seat."

SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE THAT WAS SO FUCKING SAD 💔💔💔 i am just hoping he is not actually dead or something. i'm not even sure where his story is going to go. will he get a new lover? because if so that will also be heartbreaking. but i truly don't know what will happen there.

aogiri and utsugi. they are paired but utsugi is a hyper cheater? but aogiri is obsessed with him and makes sure he's not gone for long becasye utsugi will cheat. this was a weird situation and i'm not really sure what to think of it. i didn't feel the best about this couple.

"maybe i didn't....need my charm in the first place."
this moment though - yall just gotta read this to understand it 😭

anyway, excuse me while i go cry through volume 2 ✌️

The art was beautiful and all the characters pretty sexy. The smutty scenes were hot and the story interesting. Too bad it ended in a kind of cliffhanger and I need volume 2, like yestarday!

A wound is an entryway for light.

THIS WAS SO CUTE AND HOT AND JUST EXTREMELY ADORABLE. Heart-wrenching, yes, but delicious. It's a freaking feast, alright. I love this so much, omg I don't think I can keep calm! This is just so good. I love the storytelling and the art style. Just gorgeous. It was so hot, yes, but I love how it's not your usual yaoi story with senseless intercourse. It has its subtleties that also reflects on the art sequence that will just move you to tears. Billy Balibally is such a fairy godmother, I love her! I can't wait for volume 2!!

It can't be less than a five because it's just so fricken perfect.

Turned into a vampire during a violent attack, nineteen-year-old En is suddenly thrust into a world totally different from where he came. Guiding him along his journey is the mysterious Ishii. En can't help the attraction he feels toward his mentor, and at a vampire meet-and-greet, he expresses his intentions to pair with Ishii.

--

This is a sensual yaoi manga that features very pretty characters with slightly blurred sex on the page. I love me my vampires and so I was intrigued by the premise of this manga. And it was okay.

I found the book enjoyable, but the writing was more stilted and herky-jerky than I like. It felt more like a direct translation rather than a cleaned up interpretation of the text. It made it hard for me to follow the very paper-thin plot. In a way, this book felt more like a set up for the universe and the characters with several sex scenes mixed in rather than a cohesive story. It's okay, but I don't feel like I need to read the next volume to find out more.

Additionally, I found the art style pretty but lacking in distinct character design. There are several characters who I could not tell apart when they were on the same page or in the same panel. And I found that distracting. I need to be able to tell at a glance who is whom, and I couldn't. Sugi and Ishii had too similar of design for instance. As did En, Utsugi, and Umesaki (and one of those is a woman so...)

This is a manga that would be great for people who love steamy Yaoi and paranormal mystery. As for me, I liked it but didn't love it. So I'm going to give this...

Three Stars.

Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review.*

I loved this! It was so much more than I was expecting.

I often struggle to get really into a graphic novel series in the first volume because it's hard to get a lot of depth into a single book with so little text (compared to regular novels of the same length), but this book managed to pack so much into less than 240 pages, not in terms of plot and action, but in terms of characters, relationships, and exploration of vampirism and this vampire society.

There are so many things I loved that it's all just ping-ponging around my head with no hope of real organization, so here's a list!

- We got to really meet six different vampires in this volume, and each was unique and different. I really got a sense of personality for every character. They all felt believable and somehow even felt older, like their actual ages, despite looking young.

- I loved good guy Ichii! For some reason, I thought Ichii would kinda be a jerk, but he was actually really sweet, trying his best to be a good guardian to En, and a good friend to Sugi. There was also something about how vampires who work for the Fangs organization (Ichii being one of them) are pretty much volunteers.

- En was adorable! So full of life and emotion, despite struggling a bit with not being human anymore. I can see why all the older vampires would like him. You can't help but be charmed by him, and he's not even trying.

- I loved the different relationship the vampires had with each other, with their families, etc. I don't want to ruin the fun of letting you learn as you read, but there were all different kinds of love and romance and friendship and family, either already established or just blossoming.

- There's such a sweet romantic relationship starting between En and Ichii! A newbie vamp, and a mentor who actually cares. I loved the banter and playfulness between them.

- There are some explicit steamy scenes. Trigger warning for the first being maybe kinda dubcon (En kept telling him to wait, slow down, etc. but Ichii didn't, and then En liked it).

- I loved how much this explored different aspects of vampirism and the different ways it can affect people. Cheating. Loneliness. Depression. Lovers and children growing old. That sort of thing.

- This was also a somewhat interesting take on vampire society, what with the Fangs organization, blood delivery, pairing with other vampires being encouraged, support groups, etc.

- The art is beautiful! And everyone is sexy. I also liked the chibi kinda art scattered throughout because it brought out more fun and personality. (Maybe that's typical in manga. I believe this is technically the first real manga I've read, though I read plenty of other graphic novels, webcomics, etc.) Also, I saw someone mention how nicely drawn all the hands are, and they were right, these are some perfect hands!

- It made me laugh at times. It just always cracks me up when vampires drink from blood bags like they're juice pouches. There were also just some cute and funny moments, like En's excitement over getting to play with a tortoise.

*Phew* Ok, I think that's it!

I loved this graphic novel with its beautiful art, sexy vampires, unique characters, touching and interesting relationships, exploration of vampirism, and sweet blossoming romance!

*Rating: 4.5 Stars // Read Date: 2021 // Format: Ebook (ARC)*

It was about time for a reread and the sequel is out in Japan now and I'm so excited to get my copy. I bought three, because... bonuses. I have a love hate for Japan and their manga bonuses. I know I need help. ANYWAY. SO ready to get the sequel and I'm hoping Tokyopop gets the English out soon too. I need more of Ichii's past and Sugi's plus more Ichii and En romance. It's so fucking good.

*Original Review 7/1/2021*
This was EVERYTHING. The art is fucking immaculate. This is honestly my ideal style. It’s so good. The hands, the way clothing is drawn, the faces and hair. It’s SO GOOD. I desperately want an art book from this mangaka. I just want to study their work. I love it so much.

The story isn’t perfect. The world building is a bit messy and confusing. Not fully fleshed out yet, but I think figuring out the world building could come with future volumes as the story develops. What really sold this series for me is the characters and their relationships. I want to know more about everyone and see all these romances and friendships grow. I absolutely love the main characters. They’re so cuteeeeee. And the ROMANCE. I want to SCREAM. I’m obsessed.

I’m so upset that I couldn’t find anything about a sequel. I need it so badly. Even just a crumb of a chapter PLEASE. I need more.

Volume 1 of FANGS follows newly turned En as he's introduced to life as a vampire by Ichii. There's an interesting system of 'Pairing', where two suitable vampires take care of each others feeding needs. The majority of times the pairs turn into a romantic relationship. So it's pretty obvious where En and Ichii's relationship is headed.

I really liked En and Ichii's dynamic. Ichii is dark and brooding but opens up to En, and is actually very sweet. While En is like a cute golden retriever in vampire form.

Throughout the volume we also meet other vampires. One of my favourite aspects of this manga is that we see how people deal with the longevity of vampirism; the loneliness that comes with the territory.

Also, the artwork is gorgeous.

the way the vampires exude such sexuality yet at the same time a deep loneliness is such a visceral feeling for me. i get to see a glimpse of their solitude and the way they live their own lives away from humanity. i like how en is a ball of sunshine to these brooding vampire oldies, and his character gives refreshing vibes because of his innocence.

3.5 stars!

This reminds me so much of True Blood. Just gay.

CW: suicidal ideation

To be fair, the elements that felt reminiscent of True Blood aren’t necessarily elements that are exclusive to that series. It’s just a lot of elements from vampire stories in a BL manga.

En is a new vampire that’s survived a mysterious attack. Iichi is an elder, experienced vampire that works for some sort of agency that tried to maintain human/vampire relations. He becomes En’s guardian and looks after him. He tries to get En to see the benefit of forming a blood pair with him because En’s scared of letting anyone else pair with him. In this world, apparently the bad vampires feast on humans and the good vampires feast on other vampires.

They set up 3 different types of vampire relationships in this world. The vampire couple that’s happy, but really worried about infidelity. Apparently you can scent the blood someone drinks. The vampire that mated with a human - his story is interesting. He was married and then got injured while near another vampire and he was turned to save his life. His wife is human, he has a human (older looking) child. The vampire that lost his husband and wants to die. His story was so sad and there’s some scenes about his suicidal ideation.

I felt like En wasn’t that well fleshed out as a character. His only trait seemed to be youth - but I’m trying to think if there’s any protagonist in a vampire story that’s interesting and no, there really isn’t. I liked that he tried to help Sugi, the suicidal vampire.

The relationship has elements of tropes that bother me in some BL’s. At times, Iichi feels a bit too pushy. The sex scenes felt like he was moving faster than En wanted him to and there’s talk about him using his “charm” to make it “better” for En, which wasn’t great. En later calls him out on it but I don’t necessarily feel as though that was quite remedied. Add to that, you have the knowledge that Iichi is so much older than En and attracted to him bc he’s emotional and youthful.

So, not quite my favorite elements for a romance, but I enjoyed the book overall and I want to see where it goes!

A newly found vampire being taken out of his old world and thrown right into a new one.

As a fresh vampire, En has to face struggles he never had to face before. Adjusting to his new life as a vampire certainly isn’t the easiest task, but Ishii, a much more experienced vampire, helps guiding him through his new daily life. The story dives into many different aspects of what it means to be a vampire and goes into detail about topics such as loneliness and suicidality. The reader is able to see En slowly but surely adjust more and more to his new everyday and I honestly want to figure out how this story will go on.

Definitely will be reading further, as I think this story has potential.

*Warning, there will be mild spoilers*

I'm bummed. Finding FANGS at a library after an optional work training session made me excited. I'd seen this at a local bookstore and put it on the backburner to ILL later, so seeing I didn't have to do that made me smile. However, this manga struggles to realize its full potential as an introduction to Balibally's version of a vampire story. Reflecting on the first volume made me realize I had more problems with it than I initially thought.

One thing I did enjoy was Balibally's art. I like their scenery and how they gave their characters distinctive traits. They're able to build sexual tension effectively, and some of the comedic elements worked in their favor (Darwin's introduction). I also emphasize with En figuring out his place as a newly christened vampire, being as "young" as he is and getting to meet fellow peers and see how they deal with the transition. I didn't understand vampiric plastic surgery when Masaki explained it, but that's relatively minor given how much Balibally went over.

The story was weak for me. This volume felt like a prologue to a bigger story with little establishing action beyond En getting turned and him declaring his partnership with Ichii. Balibally teases their audience with Ichii's mysterious past and a secret he's keeping, but the pull isn't strong enough when the volume centers around meeting side characters, how En reacts to them, and two sex scenes. En's framing also made me uncomfortable at times. I understand age gaps have existed in vampiric love stories before, but the constant reinforcing of En as a "virgin" and a "baby" feels like infantilization and reminds me of fanservice media I've seen/been exposed to with women getting the same treatment. I'm getting past the point where characters are framed as desirable because of their youth. I think supernatural romances deserve more than that.

En and Ichii's relationship also could have been developed more. The latter chooses to be the former's guardian right off the bat, but the romantic framing isn't strong enough to want to root for them. I also didn't like Ichii taking advantage of En at several moments throughout this volume. Balibally's established dynamic is currently the driving force of these two being together, rather than their growing feelings for each other. They can grow as a couple. However, their first time threw me off because it's related to what I discussed earlier and in a status update.

It's a shame, because FANGS looked really promising. While Balibally's art style was the biggest draw to this series, their story is not compelling enough to make me want to continue. Hopefully I can find other supernatural romances that don't fall among the media I read as a teen and am now not interested in.

✨️GAY VAMPIRES FOR THE WIN!!✨️

This is such an underrated manga. Balibally does an amazing job creating this mysterious world in which vampires are trying to promote cohabitation with humans by pairing up compatible vampires so they can feed and support each other. This system helps vampires combat their "urges," which means fewer attacks on humans.

En, the newly turned 19 year old vampire is adorable, and Ichii, his gaurdian, is helplessly infatuated with him; their sexual chemistry is undeniable. There's something about Ichii that makes me want to know him better. He's got this dark and mysterious thing going on that always manages to pique my interest.

The plot is laid back yet interesting, and the characters are beautifully drawn; sensual and sulty with hints of melancholy that gives modern Interview with the Vampire vibes. The sex scenes are censored, but they are drawn in such a way that you'd hardly notice. The emphasis is on the eroticism and tenderness of the act (..through you very much see the act 🔥), and it looks stunning. 5 stars

FANGS Vol. 1 was an enjoyable read. I liked the premise, and both En and Ichii came across well as characters. The artwork is fine, the men all beautifully drawn, and I also enjoyed a lot of the interactions with side characters, as well as those between the two main protagonists. However, it was missing a spark for me. I never completely well in love with the tale or the characters, and when this volume ended I felt like I wouldn't mind seeing what happened next, but that I wouldn't be heartbroken if I didn't read on. As such, I am giving it 3.5 stars. Although it didn't completely grab me, it has a lot going for it that will make it appeal to fans of BL vampire stories with plenty of steamy moments.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Okay! Now this was purrrrrrrfect! We got the ideal amount of spice and an age gap relationship… well, when your partner is a vampire, you’re bound to be much younger than him.

After being bitten and left for dead at a party, En wakes up a vampire. Ichii is tasked with being his guardian, which in turn begins a beautiful friendship. But they might just end up a bit more: A bonded pair.

I need volume 2 IMMEDIATELY! Their growing love affair is my fave and I need them to become a pair!
