🆗 Magic system
🆗❌ Character
🆗❌ Plot and pace

DNF at 30% - I realize that this is a very unpopular opinion...

1.5 stars

Elaine escaped from Arcadia where she was held prisoner by Lord Blackfrost 5 years ago. She also managed to kill the evil lord when she escaped, and the new Lord Blackfrost is now indebted to her. She is trying to live a normal life until a mysterious man that she met in Arcadia comes to ask for her help.

The magic system is interesting, it is linked with the zodiac signs, but we don’t have any details, I would have liked it if it were more detailed. All we know is that Elaine has Taurus magic and that it is linked to the earth.

I tried, but I just couldn’t connect with the main character at all. The first few chapters were promising, but I still couldn’t get into the story. I realize that this is an unpopular opinion, but I found the first 30% boring and quite ordinary, and I do not care enough to continue with this story.

Crown of Frost (Faerie Lords #1) by Isabella August

If you like sweet, steamy, self-sacrificing love interests.. this book is a must read. If you prefer intricate magic systems and brutal villains at every turn.. this novel has that too.

According to the author's website, Isabella August is the nom de guerre of not one.. but a pair of writers, who began as childhood friends. As adults, thousands of miles apart geographically, but clearly much closer at the heart.. they collaborate on stories like this one. And what a lovely intricate web they weave...

If he left like this, drowning in shame and despair, she knew that she would never see him again.

I am absolutely in love with Liam. He is indeed, all the things I mentioned above, but also so much more. He's a force to be reckoned with. He's one of the most sensual male characters I've ever read, but in ways I've experienced, which made him feel all the more realistic. He's amusing and possessive.. yet reasonable about it. He's also deeply conflicted, through no real fault of his own, which.. I am a sucker for.

Our story though, mainly centers around a young witch named Lainey, who has lost huge chunks of her memory, but gained something considerable as well. A character that is quite likable herself. She has vulnerabilities, but she isn't the type to just stand aside and wail either. Nor is she an over the top 'bad ass' type. Rather, she digs down when she needs to.. but she stumbles. She makes mistakes.

The world itself.. for me.. was kind of a stunning mix of the frozen land of Beauty's Beast.. and Wonderland mazes.. with a lot of other interesting landscapes thrown in as well. And that magic system I mentioned? Diverse. So diverse, the author(s?) have even seen fit to include a breakdown at the back of the book. I cannot wait to read more.

All in all, I adored every moment of this story. I read it front to back in one sitting. I think my eyes may be bleeding.. but it was worth it. Just as I know the rest of the books in the series are going to be.

"One dress. Five rules."

05-18: 'Crown of Gold' by Isabella August is a wonderful little prequel novella, Book 0 in the Faerie Lords Series, that takes place just prior to 'Crown of Frost' and gives us a glimpse of some of the characters we'll come to know there. It also gives us a little overview as to the structure of alliances and where the battle lines are drawn amongst the Lords.

Though we do see some familiar faces.. Pallid Valentine, the Lady of Illusions, Lord Blackfrost.. not everyone is quite the way they'll become yet.

This story focuses on the Lady's Warlock, Ezra, and a human investigator named Nicole. Ezra, known in fae circles simply as Wraith, strikes a deal with Nicole in hopes of getting her help to steal a valuable prisoner from the Lord of Coins during a dangerous ball in his neighboring realm. If they succeed, the soul he sold to the Lady years before, will be his once more.. freeing him to live an untethered mortal life again.

If they fail.. well, they'll probably both be dead and none of it will matter much at all.

As can be expected from the pair of writers who work under the single pseudonym, August's tale.. while brief, is no less vibrant.

"Breakfast is god...........
I'm here to worship."
"Ah......
So this is where you go on Sundays, is it?"

Ezra is a lovely character, cool on the surface.. though this seems as much to be a common survival instinct in the fae lands. Beyond that casual exterior, lies a great deal of warmth and sweetness that's as obvious in his affectations as his words. He's formal and positively adorable, but he's definitely capable of some snark and I loved every minute of it.

Nicole is on the sarcastic side. She's funny though. She's someone you can see yourself hanging out with, as long as the people you hang out with are also prone to having itchy trigger fingers and trust issues. She's very likeable and even when she's fretting about whether or not she's trusting the wrong person, she draws back from her personal experiences with them and tries to give the benefit of the doubt. Things haven't always been great, but she means well.

The protagonists, the creepy Lord of Coins and his Warlock, Midas.. are just as richly textured. Immediately, I didn't like either of them. The writer always has a way of presenting them even before you get to know them, that just raises your hackles. You're just like.. okay.. this one feels like bad news.

"Have fun......
Don't do anything I wouldn't do."
"I suspect that list to be vanishingly short."

You can't have a fae story without some unexpected complications and August always does a fantastic job of complicating the characters' lives. I enjoyed watching Nicole work out how to handle things as they came up, she thinks well on her feet and that's a trait I have to assume she shares with the writers who shaped her.

I'm thoroughly absorbed in this world they've created. I love the idea of the Hedge which sits in the center of their world bordering the various realms, affected by each wherever it comes up against them, and with dangers all its own. I love the way each Lord's realm is distinctly different, from their magic and how it works to the look and feel of the realm itself.

Since there's a fifth book on the way, I'm going to have to hustle and get caught up. Books 2-4 await and I don't want to miss a thing!

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m PMSing but I didn’t enjoy the book like I was hoping too! It was ok but I kept waiting for something that didn’t come. With such high ratings you’d think I read a different book.

First in a series, Faerie Lords, by Isabella August. This is actually the first book I've read by Isabella August and found it quite enjoyable and different from other books of the faerie type I've read in the past. The book flows pretty smoothly throughout and does have a happily ever after.

Elaine escaped the Faerie Lord Blackfrost with the help of his son Liam. When she killed Lord Blackfrost during her escape, the mantle was passed to Liam. Elaine, however, does not remember any of this except for snipets that invade her dreams. She just feels something is missing. When Liam reappears in her life needing her help, he awakens more memories within Elaine. She remembers Liam, but doesn't. Liam needs his name from Elaine to help him retain his humanity before the Blackfrost mantle steals it from him entirely.

But does Elaine dare to enter the realm of Arcadia again? She escaped once, but if she returns, will she be able to leave again? If she doesn't help Liam though, he may very well end up like his father, who had trapped Elaine in his Lifeless Garden before Liam helped her escape.

I had the opportunity to read Crown of Frost by BookSirens for an honest review.

I will be completely honest here… the only reason why I decided to read this book was because it reminded me so much of the Vampire Academy’s cover by Richelle Mead - and I HAD to give it a chance. I don’t normally choose my books based on covers, but for some reason this one said PICK ME.
It did NOT disappoint. This book takes a good amount of reading in to start anticipating the storyline - A lot of events already happen in the story that you have to read in. I was honestly not that into the paranormal, never really been my thing, but it was readable. I was not anticipating all the sexy steaminess in chemistry in the book, but it definitely gives it some spicy flavor to the book.

My only downside to the book was more information on the characters in the book, I really enjoyed the magic, adventure, romance, and the mixture of Fae, Witches ( all mingling) .. I want more on Liam for SURE!!!!!!! * wink

A wonderful book. A combination of fairy tale, fantasy, romance, adventure, and mystery. The characters are complex and the plot is both unique and familiar. Unique because of the challenges the characters face and familiar because the story met all my expectations. A very good story.

I really don’t mean for this to sound offensive, but I can’t understand the hype this book has, why so many liked it. Don’t get wrong, there was nothing really bad about it. The writing was good and it had its impactful and intense moments for sure. However, for me there was nothing really there to draw me into the world or story. Sadly, I found it underwhelming and missing something.

The most noticeable issue was how so little was explained or expanded upon, especially for a book that carried so many elements. There were warlocks, witches, faeries, different worlds and authentic magic. All the tools to build an amazingly complex and adventurous read, yet I never really felt like the story took advantage of that. Mainly because while the story threw these different races and worlds out there it kind of left it there without explanation, like we readers already should know what it entailed. I mean, I got that Elaine and Jenna were witches, but then terms like Capricorns, cancers and Tauruses was mixed in with that and I never understood what defined or differenced between them. And warlocks? What exactly made a warlock just that? Were they just humans with soul contracts to faery? Or was there something else that made them warlocks? Even the faeries was left unexplained. Where there only faerie lords and no other faery? All of this I felt was kind of important to know to fully grasp the written world, but it just brushed it by, expecting me to know it on my own and move on. This made the story understandably a bit confusing and lackluster in some depth.

Even the the characters had very little detail or explanation to them making both them along with the story somewhat bareboned. I mean, the book was rich on some details, like what the characters looked like, about the magic they could do and even the struggles they faced, which was good. However, the most defining aspect to make the characters come alive was missing and that was their backstory. Sure, Elaine had the whole mostly forgotten Arcadia ordeal and it sure brought intrigue to the book. However, nothing past that was ever mentioned, like her childhood, her parents, friends, exes, really anything to bring some life to her. The same with Liam. Who was his mom? Was he half human? What was his life like before Elaine? The only character who actually did have some more personality to her was Jenna and she was only a side character. But she was given somewhat of a past with the uncle and the tragedy with Gabe, making her a more relatable character since her personality reflected that.

I truly don’t mean to be so critical, but these things was too noticeable for me not to mention. Although, I can’t forget to mention the things I did enjoy with the story as well, like the Adam situation, the intrigue of the forgotten ordeal Elaine went through, Jenna’s past and Liam’s secret identity. That is what gave the book some soul and twists that I could really enjoy and appreciate, especially since it made it unpredictable. Then we had the Lady of Briar and her undetermined stance as villain or not. The doubt about her intention and the twisted way she loved was very impressively handled. Most of all I enjoyed the ending of the book with the reunion and Liam’s fight for humanity. I am a sucker for HEA’s, and even though the romance did leave more to desire (mainly because of the characters) It was very satisfying seeing them come together as equals on common ground. All in all Crown of Frost was good enough for me to give it three stars and it has left me a bit curious about Jenna and Valentine and their future struggles. Curious enough that I might return to this series in the future.

Man, another dud😩. I don’t even know where to start with this one.... I really wanted to connect to the story especially the paranormal side, however I got so sick of hearing about flowers and frost that it was so distracting I finally called it quits at around 30%. I was not connected to the storyline or the characters at all.

Overall 4.5 stars

Note: I received this book from Book Sirens and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

I love the fae, I love how dark and dangerous they are, how whimsical they can be how lavish and magical everything seems. I love everything about them and Crown of Frost had all of that and more.

Magic is a very interesting thing, it can be used and shaped any kinda way by an author and Isabella has shaped her magic system by mixing witches and warlocks and the fae. I haven't come across a magic system like the one represented in this book and it's very interesting. To see how these different beings interact with each other to see their general responses to them as a species and their magic. Crown of Frost faerie lords exists and it seems like they take on the power of the elements, it's no light or dark court (as far as this book goes anyway) and the lords interact with witches it seems more frequently than I would have thought.

The story is a little jarring at first, it seems that readers are dropped into an already playing story. Crucial events have already happened, events that shaped the main character's Elaine's current life but readers don't figure things out until the flashbacks. However, the things that are happening in the current are very interesting, they are full of magic and mystery. Isabella does a good job of letting the readers figure out the world as she slowly adds details. The story is a little short but so many things happen, it was done really well. The way the story is told is because of the things that Elaine has gone through so it makes sense that certain things are missing at first but are filled in by the end of the story.

Elaine, the main female character, is very complex she seems strong in someways but timid in other ways. She is a survivor, she has been through so much at the hands of the fae. She finally makes a peaceful life for herself but she can't help but get involved with the fae when she feels like it's the right thing to do. Liam, the main male character, is a good match for Elaine, there is something about the two of them together that seems so right. Liam is caring, noble and incredibly brave, while Elaine is reference as a "soft-touch", Liam is a protector and I love their interactions together.

Pro:
-Fae
-Witches
-Magic
-Steam/Romance
-Complex Character

Con:
-More of the World
-More character background information

Crown of Frost is the first book in the Faerie Lords series and it was wonderful. Full of fae and magic, mystery and danger, romance and love, all centered around witches. The story kept my interest and I am absolutely invested in the characters and I want more of them. Crown of Frost is an excellent fae story and I will most definitely be continuing the series.

I was so hopeful about this book, but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me.

There were parts that were quite interesting but more often than not I found myself skimming some of the pages.

The steamy scenes were hot and I like the idea of the zodiac magic system.

For a romance, there was hardly any chemistry other than the couple times they get down to it. The tension was missing leading up to any pivotal scene and it was rather anti climatic.

It was so blatantly obvious who Liam was - and that the fact Elaine didn't realise is an insult to be honest. That was an incredibly eye rolling point.

The characters are extremely 2 dimensional and that doesn't always bother me as long as the plot holds my attention. I contemplated DNFing - but there ARE some interesting scenes in this story. It wasn't Elaine or Liam that kept me turning the pages though.

This didn't fill the Faerie void I find myself in - but it did kill a few hours on a rainy day!

Thank you to BookSirens who provided me with a copy for an honest review.

"I have received this book in exchange for an honest review!"

This was a lovely story. I liked the characters very much, I liked the plot, the mystery.
At first I was a bit confused about what was going on but as the story progressed more details came into view and it all made sense.
I loved the world building. It is something that I enjoy reading, magic and love and purpose and conquering ones fears.
I will definitely check out the other books in the series because I am a bit worried about Jenna and I need to know what happens next.

"You'll forget me," a soft voice promised.
"I won't forget you," she whispered. "How could I?"

A wicked faerie warlock haunts Elaine’s dreams. As a Taurus witch, it’s hardly a surprise that she dreams of warlocks. Yet each time, it’s the same mysterious man with long black hair and icy blue eyes. For years, he haunts her dreams...until the day she finally meets him, face to face.

Though Liam is everything Elaine should fear, he speaks to her with a strange familiarity, stirring distant recollections. Everything about him is woven through the fabric of her shattered memory: His voice. His touch. His promise to keep her safe.

And while her memories of Liam are sparse, she finds herself drawn to him in a way that suggests he’s the very opposite of her enemy.

"You will," he assured her.

Okay, where to start with this one? I feel like this had a lot of promise: zodiac magic system (cool!), faeries (also cool!), steamy dreams, and a mysterious tall, dark, and handsome (yum). So why do I feel so lack-luster about this one?

It isn't that it was badly written, because it wasn't. It isn't also like it didn't have any steam, because it did. Perhaps because I felt like it didn't really delve into any of its interesting elements and really had no plot?

Literally the entire book was getting the main characters together and I really didn't see why I had to read so much in order to get there.

Where was the magic system? So the zodiac sign you have determines the affinity you have (Taurus = earth). Got it, that's easy. But why does the zodiac even play a part? How does it link to it in the first place? Dunno. All you know is Taurus = earth. Well, okay then...

Where were the fae? So you find out he's one, but he really just feels like a magic user. She even mistakes him for a warlock. And aside from the crowns being tied to their realms there isn't much in the way of the fae?? This isn't another episode of the Goblin King, okay.

The non-existent plot. She escapes faerie and loses her memories other than a few fragments that causes nightmares. Like, she had PTSD from this. She now owns a flower shop and was in a toxic relationship (why?) before finally breaking it off. TD&H comes into the picture which of course elicits the usual swooning except that he's from that time that gives her nightmares and she'd rather just forget. Except he's turning into something he doesn't want to and he'd like her remember something that will help him out because he's the one that helped her out of faerie the first time.

She decides to go back to faerie because that makes sense. Yes, you've had nightmares and can't sleep right so let's plunge right on in shall we because he's so hot she loses her mind.

(To be fair, he is hot. But I digress.)

She gets tangled up in faerie affairs, the very affairs that she was trying to avoid and landed her in trouble the first time around. (Does she realize what the definition of madness is?) But it's okay, because this time she has TD&H to come threaten anyone that puts her in danger. Which he does. But he's also like...eternal winter personified, so there's that.

There's also this confusing quagmire of the land tainting the crown, trying to change it, trying to save him, and kinda-sorta-pretty-much dooming herself in the process? Well, doom is a little dramatic but she definitely isn't in Kansas anymore.

Can we just keep the two steamy scenes and scrap the rest?

Thanks so much to Book Sirens for this copy of Isabella August's Crown of Frost. I chose this book because the cover intrigued me. I love the fantastical feel of it as well as the fierce, warrior-esque look in the woman’s eye.

One reason that I enjoy fantasy novels so much is because of the incredible world-building that often accompanies them. This book is no exception. The world that the author created is so vivid and unusual. It is a fresh perspective on magic that I haven’t seen before. Arcadia, the magical realm described in the story, is an intricately developed world of powerful rulers, witches, warlocks, and other fascinatingly original elements.

I also like the way that the flashbacks are woven throughout the story. The story begins five years after Elaine escaped from the evil clutches of Lord Blackfrost. Since Elaine can’t remember her time in the faerie realm, she gets help from her apprentice who is more experienced in this area. In the flashbacks, we learn of Elaine’s captivity and her relationship with Liam. We also learn more about Arcadia. The author skillfully transitions from present to past to create a coherent, clear, and creative story-line as well as captivating characters.

The characters are as richly developed as the setting. From the mad Faerie Lord who will stop at nothing to possess Elaine to the spunky apprentice who shows more bravery than common sense, all of the characters are dynamically created with a depth that I love in the books that I read.

Liam is everything I like in a leading man – handsome, mysterious, witty, selfless, and smart. His love for Elaine is unwavering (and swoon-worthy!), and her love for him is just as strong. There is no doubt of their feelings for one another. Even when Elaine couldn’t remember him, she was still drawn to him, and there is a completeness when they are together.

This is an engrossing story reminiscent of fairy tales and complete with a happy ending. Though it is the first in a series, it is meant to be read as a stand-alone novel. That being said, I can’t wait for the next in the series to come out! I’m curious if Elaine and Liam’s story will continue or if the story will focus on other characters within the faerie realm. Either way, this talented author is one to put on your radar!

Favorite Parts:
- the love story. Elaine and Liam’s story is interesting and steamy!
- the faerie world. It is unique and vivid. I definitely want to learn more about this realm.
- a different perspective on magic and faeries

Recommendations:
Readers who like fantasy and romance will enjoy this book. I think it will also appeal to people who like faerie stories with steamy romantic scenes.

Easy read but a bit uneven.

I only realised in the last two weeks I still had a sample of this book waiting to be read.  Having done that, I was interested enough to buy it.
Whilst the book has witches and fae, it was a fairly original concept (for me anyway). The fact that there are different kinds of witch that are in line with horoscopes means that there is enough scope for future books to have different characters, even if they are the same type of 'supe'. Having Lord's or Lady's as ruling over lands isn't particularly new, but again, the types of land give a good grounding (No pun intended) for future books to be different.
It's written well, although the pace of the book fluctuates. It sometimes jumps between the steady everyday lives of Elaine and even Jenna to drama, action or romance quite suddenly so you lose the flow of the writing. It also seems to lose it's way occasionally, forgetting certain plot elements (explained a bit more below)
Elaine is clearly a character who is used to being controlled one way or another so it was good to see her development in to someone with self belief. That said, it could be argued that there is an element of control with Liam. She is still seems quite a lonely character though even if there is an attempt to show friendships/alliances beginning.
Jenna is the 'fierce best friend' but she's not ott. Although she's only meant to be an apprentice, there is a genuine warmth and humour to her relationship with Elaine. There are also hints about what will happen in her own story and I think she might have potential to be a better FLC than Elaine.
Liam is a bit of a let down. His supposed twist in the book is obvious from a mile away. Also, a big deal is made about Elaine remembering his full name but once she does it never used. Why?!
He's a fairly average MLC and it seems like the author sort of gave up expanding his personality once his secret was revealed.
There was also hints that Elaine might be more than she seemed in terms of her supe type but that too seems to have been forgotten. It wouldn't surprise me if she turns out to be the daughter of someone powerful, such as a Lord or Lady.

It's a light, easy read but I not sure I care enough about the characters to go further on with the series. Given I bought it, I sure I'll see it in one of my lists and maybe decide to carry on....

Preface: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this novel. On the surface, it's a pretty simple story. Girl was once in the Faerie World. Girl escaped, leaving behind a faerie dude she loved. Girl lost her memories. Fairy dude finds her years later. She wants to remember him and help him with his problems. It's all very sweet and fairy-tale-esque.

Unfortunately, things kinda go off the rails in the second half. We're suddenly swarmed by half a dozen plot threads that never really get resolved, new characters crawling out of the woodwork. The book's pacing goes flying out the window as it attempts to compensate for all of this, and the novel ends up with 20-30 extra pages after the climax in an attempt to "resolve" all of these threads (i.e., set them up for the rest of the books in the series). It's a little jarring, and left me yearning for the simplicity of the first half.

At the same time, the central romance still stands strong enough to make the novel enjoyable. The main pair are very sweet and gentle with each other. Elaine's a great character - not afraid of being feminine, but not a doormat, either. She's clever and strong-willed and gets the job done when she needs to. Liam (weird name for a faerie princeling, but what evs) is gentle and kind and protective and just very /nice/ - not at all the "bad boy" that the series title would suggest. The supporting cast is varied and interesting (but, again, nothing with them really ends up resolving itself because they each have their own book in the series).

Overall, if you like romances, or the faerie trend of recent years, you'll enjoy this book - it gets a little bumpy after the halfway mark, but you'll still make it to the HEA in the end.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

As soon as I read the summary as saw this sentence "Wicked faeries, missing memories... and a dream that just won't die" I was intrigued. The concept of the story I was soon to find was actually a new take on the standard 'Fae' fantasy romance. I enjoyed the urban elements, it made it feel as if this could happen to anyone.

We meet Elaine, five years after her escape from the darkest realm in Arcadia. But she keeps having dream/nightmares but can't remember everything that happened whilst she was trapped in Arcadia. What she can remember is the blue eyes of a mysterious man. She is a witch but is trying to stay hidden so as not to be dragged back into the games of the Fae lords who rule Arcadia.

Enter Liam and his beautiful cold blue eyes who needs help from Elaine but has also come to protect her.... You see where this is going...

The trope for the romance in this is pretty standard, but very well done. Side character where very well fleshed out and actually had important roles to play. I have read many books like this that just insert characters to make it seem well rounded but fail to actually flesh these characters out. I feel any of the characters introduced (Simon, Jenna or Pallid Valentine) could go on to have books of their own and they would be just as interesting as this one. The world was instantly interesting and actually a relatively new concept. I enjoyed the book and would be very happy to continue to read on and see what happens with the other Fae Lords in Arcadia. It was a high, solid 3* from me, I thought about 4* but there were some elements that just needed a bit more fine tuning.

At first I did not think I would finish the book. Its pacing is a little slow for me. This is a pure adult fantasy romance, so expect only minor action. What I found deserved the 4 stars is depth of the story theme and the fact that the author leaves some details for you to figure out.

First, Elaine is a witch with the ability to grow plants. This ability is characterized by the astrological signs, but is not completely explained. I am fine with that, because I don't want endless, boring explanations of the framework or science behind the plot. Plus, Elaine grew up in this world and would not need to explain nor have it explained to her. As a life-enhancing witch, Elaine was unprepared for Elvish attention, and in the past she was inprisoned by a Fae Lord and somehow escaped. She only remembers a fraction of the experience, until an elf shows up at her door politely asking if she remembered his name.

Oops. No. But Elaine doesn't have the heart to shut the door on him. Instead, she agrees to face her fears, explore the past she has avoided, and find the answers. That is soooooo moving. It takes real guts to face the utmost terrors of one's childhood when you are scarred for life.

I also like most of the side characters: Simon, the Briar queen's warlock, The Briar Queen, the creepy bog warlock...all quirky and interesting.

While I would like more action and a faster pacing, and finish at page 142 instead of later, the whole story was satisfying in its conclusion. It is a nice weekend read when you just want to face those fears and feel better.

DISCLAIMER: I was lucky enough to receive this book from BookSirens on behalf of the author. This is in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. I hope the prospective reader will read this review fully before making any prejudgments on the book. I will give the book my thoughts, good and bad. Also, this review contains opinions that are my own and not the author’s. My thoughts will be different from your thoughts and just know that before reading the book. Lower in the review, I will talk about disclaimers in the book as well that you should read before opening the book.

Elaine is in constant turmoil. After escaping the darkest realm in faerie five years before, she is experiencing nightmares that terrify her. Even though her memories are almost nonexistent, there are mysterious thoughts that resurface in her dreams. These blue eyes that stare into her soul day and night. When the nightmares return, so does the man who haunts her dreams constantly. A man who has dark power seeping out of him. Liam says that he is there to protect her. Is this the truth? Or is this proving to be Elaine’s most dangerous temptation yet?

I am going to rate this book a 3 out of 5 stars. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I don’t know if I would want to read the second in the series.

I recived a free copy of Crown of Frost by : Isabella August for an honest review..

The book is about a young witch who owns a flower shop, her name is Elaine but often referred to as Lainey because to know a true name holds power. Elaine is a strong character, she is brave and kind but also a force to be reckoned with. She has control over plants which is pretty neat. I really liked her back story and how she was a prisoner and escaped, I kinda wish the authors wrote about this it would have made an amazing book all on its own.

Liam is a lost soul, poor guy struggles to find himself, I didn't see it coming when some interesting things come out about him... But he is an instant character you just love.

First thing that drew me in was the cover, I find when searching for a good book you can't always judge a book by its cover, but Isabella August got it perfect with this one, it defently fit with the theme. Second was defently the about this book it told me just enough to hook me without giving good parts away, this book was right up my alley in supernatural... It was written in the thrid person and I am not a fan usually of this type of writing, but the Authors done an amazing job keeping me entertained.

Thank you to the authors Isabella August for letting me read and review..you ladies out did yourselves. p.S I read the sneak peak of book 2 can't Waite to read it.. Simon was a very interesting character and before I knew his book was number 2 I felt I needed to know his story.

Elaine has been taken by the faerie lord Blackfrost and would have died as the land drained her of her warmth and life but Liam found and saved her. He gave her the power to kill Lord Blackfrost and escape. Five years later away from Arcadia she hasn't fully recovered. She's a Taurus witch with a gift for growing things, she's lost most of her memories of her time in Blackfrost but left her with terrifying dreams.

She's successfully hidden from the magic world for over five years, until now. Suddenly warlocks are seeking her out, trying to capture her to gain the new Lord Blackfrost's favor and Liam turns up asking her for her help in recovering his name.

I don't want to spoil everything but Liam is losing himself and hopes if Elaine can remember him, he won't be lost. Elaine is drawn to Liam, she trusts him and is determined to help him.
Meanwhile other faerie lords want Elaine for their own reasons. The book seems to take a different direction for awhile then comes back to Liam and Elaine.

I thought this was an interesting world and I liked that even though the faerie lords were powerful, human magic could still protect them from the lords. Lots of interesting side characters, laying a great foundation for future stories.

Crown of Frost was such an amazing read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a unique twist on witches and the fae. The use of the zodiac as a way to categorize witches it's definitely unlike anything I've ever read and I loved being able to dive into the different types of witches versus the ordinary ones you typically read about!

I especially loved how the author decided to introduce intriguing secondary characters so that they could be used to base additional books off of. She gave us just enough of the secondary characters to be intrigued, but not too much as to make me feel that there were a bunch of unresolved plot lines. By reading only the Crown of Frost, you only understand a portion of the events that took place. I would definitely recommend reading the other books as it makes going back to re-read this book so much more enlightening.

The use of flashbacks was integral to the understanding of Elaine's and Liam's relationship and the way the author provided the flashbacks in spurts left me on the edge of my seat the entire book. Also, the fae's way of twisting words force you to pay attention to every single detail in order to attempt to guess at future plot twists. Yet, even your undivided attention doesn't prepare you for the trickery of the fae and it's resulting plot twists!

I absolutely loved this book! 10/10!

This title turned out to be fantastic. There is a sense that you might be missing a book previous to it but I'm not sure that is the case. The story has enough flashbacks to fill in those gaps.

I was trying to decide if it was a fantasy novel or a romance novel in a fantasy setting. But the story structure didn't really fit either. Then I realize that it is actually a fairy tale and everything fell into place for me. It was a lovely read.

You have a human world where some people have magic and those abilities are tied to their astrological sign. You have a magical world reached by portals much like a fairy world. Full of magical creatures and a race of power human-like beings with great power. Each had their own little realm where they are all powerful.

The story starts AFTER the fair maiden has been rescued and returned to her own, human, world. With most of her memories of the magical world drifting away. She isn't just the meek maiden of a fair tale. In her escape attempt, she also kills the magical lord who had kept her locked away. El's rescuer, a person of the magical world but also half human, is now looking for her. Sometimes, "Happy Ever After" is a two part story. And this follows the second half of that story while telling the first story it bits of flash back. And reasonably sized flash backs.

The story is great and sets up a possible two additional stories. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

Elaine Halstead wins freedom from Lord Blackfrost. Yet the faerie realm of Arcadia stole many of her memories when she left. Now Elaine keeps having dreams of an unknown blue-eyed man and recalls parts of conversations with him, somehow wishing she could talk to him again.

When the stranger with the blue eyes actually appears before her asking for her help, Elaine listens to him and is willing to do what she can to help save him, as she knew he had saved her from the Lifeless Garden. Liam is Lord Blackfrost’s indentured warlock. Although she is frightened, he is still familiar to her and she trusts him. When she calls him by his real name, he is stunned because names have power. At some point, Liam had given her his true name. Maybe he was a warlock, like Pallid Valentine, but Liam clearly wanted his humanity back, and Elaine had the power to help him.

With the other faerie lords believing Elaine has something Lord Blackfrost is after, Liam promises to keep her safe from them. What will helping him mean for her? Is she putting herself in more danger? Can Liam protect her from Lord Blackfrost, his master who also has power over him?

This is a well-written, suspenseful book with a great story line and complex characters. Grab your copy for the start of an exciting 3-book urban fantasy. You won’t regret it!

An Interesting Love Story!!😍
(Read using Kindle Unlimited)
Crown of Frost: A Wicked Faerie Tale Romance (Faerie Lords Book #1)

This is an interesting idea for a love story.
Elaine was tricked, by a Fairy Lord, into excepting his protection. He trapped her in his Realm, Blackfrost, and intended to keep her forever!!😱😢💔 We meet Elaine 5 years after she escaped. She suffers awful, fragmented nightmares of her time in captivity. They're as close to her time there as she can get as leaving shredded her memories completely, she's left with only small fragments!😢 Elaine grew on me once she stood up for herself with Adam.🎉 Her Taurus magic was fascinating!🌾✨🌹
Janna, her apprentice, was pretty opinionated & brash. It made it hard to take to her until she opened up about her back story but by then it was a little late!😟 Liam, who Elaine met in Blackfrost, was kind of scary but also hot, passionate & compassionate 🙈🔥🙏 - When he was able to overcome his birthright!!😱🌁❄ Simon, a warlock, was really interesting, quite sad in his grief though.💔😢

Generally this was a good concept & captivating idea. I felt the writing was a bit disjointed though. The pace & flow was really choppy too, which I didn't enjoy.😕 I do think Simon & his back story is intriguing enough that you will probably want to read his book as well!🌟

No one could blame you for walking away.

It has been five years since Fairie Elaine Halsted escapes the fairie world and the Fairie Lord to the real world. The Fairie Lord. She leaves behind her true love. Elaine makes a life for herself in the real world working in a shop. She doesn't remember anything about her life in the Fairie World. Elaine is teaching magic and is helping an apprentice with personal problems. Elaine leads a terrible life with an abusive boyfriend since shes left Fairie world. Also, she is having dreams about a mysterious blue-eyed man who she doesn't remember. She doesn't know his name or who he is. The strange part of it is she remembers talking to him and having feelings for him however, she can't remember his name. One day a blue-eyed man comes into her shop and asks Elaine for help. Elaine tries all she can to help him despite being afraid of him. And she doesn't know why. This book was really good. It read like a fairy-tale. It was scary at times and beautifully ethereal the next. The story is well-written with three-dimensional characters. I laughed with them and cried with them. I was very invested in these characters. lol. This is the first book I've read by this author and will not be my last. I believe that this is the first in a series. I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What a breath of fresh air

I really liked this book. I read a lot of kindle unlimited books that have a sort of unpolished feel to them. This book had none of that. I enjoyed the authors command of language. It's refreshing to read something that's not meandering.

Big pros here include interesting & fleshed out world building. This has typical fairy realms but also has zodiac-derived witch elements. These are very unique and creative! The heroine isn't annoying in this book either, it's a miracle. She's consistent throughout, a soft-hearted, level-headed adult who doesn't act like an imbicile. I enjoyed the love interest too, he could have been snarkier though. And this book keeps a pretty tight pace, like I said not a lot of meandering. The words are chosen purposefully (albiet sometimes repetitive) and that lends an efficiency to the plot. It gets to the point and stays on point even with flashback/dream sequences. The writing is just flowery enough to paint that fantasy vision. Two big thumbs up!

My only con is that the romance is a little saccharine. I'm not big on that kind of romance personally, but not a huge detractor.

I'd definitely recommend this book.

This is fantasy storytelling weaving through the worlds of witches and fae. This story follows the path of Elaine, a witch, and her subsequent entanglements with the fae worlds and her battle for survival and humanity.

This authoring duo created an original world to explore. They’ve taken concepts like witches and fae which have been told before and brought new elements to them. Tying in zodiac signs into different branches of magic is both original and fascinating. That is just one example of many.

Crown of Frost is what I would consider an erotic fantasy romance and unlike many others, this storyline would have held up without the erotic, don’t get me wrong, the erotic elements were well done. The entire book was not dedicated to one aspect or another but instead, the story pulled you in so completely making all other elements flow in naturally and were all the more intense and enjoyable.

If you are a fan of the Mercy Thompson Series I would definitely recommend this exciting start to the Faerie Lords series!

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to the next book in the series! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
