(Raise your hand if you purchased this book while on pilgrimage to the convent to see Sister's incorrupt body.)
Mary Elizabeth Lancaster entered the convent at age 17 in 1941, and as Sister Wilhelmina she saw and adapted to many changes and challenges in her life, including founding a new religious order at age 70! Her vibrant personality jumps off the page, and her profound love for her Lord and trust in him fill the poems that dot the margins. She is funny, wise and no-nonsense — except when nonsense is exactly what's needed. I had tears running down my cheeks as I read the account of her holy death surrounded by her sisters — perfection.
It took me a while to get over the visually overwhelming page design: The biographical text wraps around cutouts from photos and religious artwork, with captions and poems tucked into any available space. There is nowhere for the eyes to rest, and I would dock a star for the design except that Sister's life really is worthy of five stars.
