This is the story of the life and works of Sister Mary Wilhelmina Lancaster, foundress of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles as told by the community in a creative way. Helpful pictures and connected histories throughout.
I loved this book. Although there are difficult moments in her life story, the story is put together in such a way that the reading is light and easy. It can be read quickly or slowly (depending on one's state in life). Sr. Mary Wilhelmina is an inspiration to all. Definitely an inspiration to me. May she rest in peace! If she is already in heaven, I ask that she ask Jesus for my mother's conversion asap. I'm going to ask my mom to read this book and hopefully, Sr. Mary Wilhelmina will do the rest. :-)
Really incredible story of a woman I believe will be known as a great American saint in 15-20 years. She lived a very playful and youthful life, which seems to be the source of her holiness. Her poetry mixed into the book gives a unique glimpse into her personality.
(Raise your hand if you purchased this book while on pilgrimage to the convent to see Sister's incorrupt body.)
Mary Elizabeth Lancaster entered the convent at age 17 in 1941, and as Sister Wilhelmina she saw and adapted to many changes and challenges in her life, including founding a new religious order at age 70! Her vibrant personality jumps off the page, and her profound love for her Lord and trust in him fill the poems that dot the margins. She is funny, wise and no-nonsense — except when nonsense is exactly what's needed. I had tears running down my cheeks as I read the account of her holy death surrounded by her sisters — perfection.
It took me a while to get over the visually overwhelming page design: The biographical text wraps around cutouts from photos and religious artwork, with captions and poems tucked into any available space. There is nowhere for the eyes to rest, and I would dock a star for the design except that Sister's life really is worthy of five stars.
I loved this book and love Sr. Wilhelmina! I highly recommend this for anyone at any age to read!! I got this book when viewing her incorrupt body. I will pray for her intercession and pray that the Sisters thrive and their community grows!
This was a very powerful book to read. Sister Mary Wihelmina wanted to be a nun at a young age. When she was a little girl in the 1930's, she had to go to a Catholic Church just for blacks. As a Catholic, I never knew that the church was segregated. I especially like what Mary's mother told her that even if you are the last person to receive Communion it doesn't matter, what matters is that you received the body of Christ. Mary didn't like the loss of the Latin Mass after Vatican II, so she after a long time started a community Queen of the Apostles. She was a very holy person. The book has a lot of her poems that she wrote and is full of pictures. This is a very good read!
