Especially when one of the house staff—and member of the book club—swears they saw the nephew later that night… very much alive. From whispers of espionage to the motive of a spurned lover, the book club collective isn’t sure which way is up. Even worse, time is running out as the killer makes them the next target. I’m loving this new cozy series! It’s fun, mysterious, original, has endearing characters, a nifty (reminds me of a castle) setting, and a cool cat named Hank! And that’s just touching on the highlights and not even getting into the bones of the murder mystery story! I highly recommend the Secret Library cozy series to all mystery readers!

A meeting of the secret book club is interrupted by the butler, informing the members that the police are on their way. They learn that Andy Fitzwater, Mrs. Fitzwater's nephew, has just dropped dead in the cigar room. After having solved the mystery of the missing crown, Mrs. Fitzwater asks Laura Lee and the book club to find out who killed her nephew. Andy had a reputation as a love-them-and-leave-them playboy, which means there was no shortage of enemies. After the police leave, Laura Lee realizes she cannot find Hank. While searching for the elusive cat, she uncovers some more of the mansion's secrets.

Andy was poisoned, but how was it administered? Who hated Andy enough to kill him? Can Laura Lee and the Book Club members uncover the killer? Where is Hank? Can Laura Lee find the mischievous cat?

CeeCee James has another winner with this episode of the Secret Book Club series. She has wonderful characters and realistic situations, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged clear to the end. I am definitely looking forward to more of the stories in this fantastic series.

Loved the mystery

I tried guessing on who did it and my guess was wrong I love the mystery part of it just enough clues keep you wondering who it really was I thought too it was the reverend Because of the clues that they found along their way. I really would have loved to have picture dog hidden garden in the walls of the mansion I can see it in my mind and it looks beautiful so hopefully that's what the author wanted us to picture And it's kind of neat that they through the hidden tunnels and stuff in there it made It harder to guess who actually done it because of the mysterious tunnels and where they came out it through off track Overall it was a good book I love it

I chose to read this cozy mystery novel for 3 reasons. 1. It fits a square on my Book Cover BINGO as it has a picture of a book on the cover (actually it has many books pictured on the cover). 2. By being a cozy mystery, it meets the requirement of a monthly challenge. 3. It is a book I have had on my Kindle for awhile, and I am trying to read more books that I own.
This was a quick and fun cozy read told in the first person. It is book 2 in a series, but it can be read as a standalone book. I don't think that I missed anything by skipping reading book 1.
I liked the main characters and Hank, the big marmalade orange cat.

This was a really fun read for me. Who wouldn’t love a group of household staff crowding together to meet for Book Club in a secret room filled with a glorious collection of books? I loved the amateur sleuths. The kitchen and scullery maids, cook, even the house manager all hiding away in a beautiful hidden library. I even loved the upper echelon, most of whom were kind.

This is a very odd setting. Kitchen maids are scolded for not remembering a flower on a breakfast tray for the “mistress” and they text one another on their cell phones to tell each other about day-to-day events. The staff stays in a beautiful Manor with a gruff but lovable house manager that is upset the staff doesn’t know the difference between a high tea and an afternoon tea. Yet you can call someone on your cell to see if you can drop by. Seems as if there should be a carriage ride in there somewhere, doesn’t it?

For me, even though this was somehow out of context, it all still worked. I think part of the reason is because of the setting CeeCee James has created, as well as her characters. What emerged was a quick enjoyable read with enough twists and turns to keep the mystery part of it interesting. I love CeeCee James’ work but am not sure if I’ve read this series. Will make a point to read some more right away.

great addition to this series

This is book 2 but you can read it if you’ve not read book one. You will appreciate it more if you can read book one first though.

Because the”book club” solved the murder from the first book, the neighbor wants to hire the girls to find out what happened to her nephew at one of Ms Janice’s dinner parties. The girls at first are hesitant but for the amount of money she’s offering they decide to try. And since two of them like to ask questions and find clues it comes naturally to them.

This isn’t as good as book one but it’s still a very good book.

It has no sexual references or language so I can recommend this book to anyone who wants a good mystery to read.

Laura Lee is an avid reader who works for a woman who hates books. She's also a member of a secret book club along with some of the other employees while the house itself is full of mysteries. When Mrs Fitzwater's nephew dies under suspicious circumstances, Laura Lee and her club are in the case.

I enjoyed this book which is second in the series; however, there were quite a few errors throughout the book that detracted from the story. The series is shaping up to be a fun one. After all, who wouldn't love to be a member of a secret book club? I was drawn into the book from the start and was kept guessing throughout. I recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.

Very charming book about a large house full of secret passages and the staff who run the house for the lady of the house.

I kept forgetting the book was set in the present day, with cell phones, Bluetooth, and USB sticks. Keeping a large house is still very labor intensive with the lady of the house's busy social calendar.
A large, male orange cat is an important character in this series and the staff has a secret library and a talent for solving murders. Can't wait to read the next book!

A Cee Cee James review

Thus far I have enjoyed the series; though I have questions that haven't been answered.
Where does the The Secret Library Cozy Mysteries take place, it seems like it should be in England; though I get the impression it's in the States. The large estates, high tea, afternoon tea, and many British terms are confusing. Having read quite a few British cosy mysteries, Ms. James needs to clarify for those of us who know the difference, therefore the 4 star rating.

This is part of the Secret Library series. The main character is Laura Lee. Laura Lee is a house maid and is part of the team that takes care of Miss Janice's mansion. At the end of a dinner party , one of the guests drops dead. Laura Lee and her friends are asked by the aunt of the dead man too find out what happened. If they do , she will give the group $50,000 .
Laura Lee starts to ask a lot of questions and with every answer she gets closer to finding out who did it. Can they figure this out before it's too late ?

In book 2 of the series, a young man drops dead in the cigar room. He is the nephew of Mrs. Fitzwater, a friend of Miss Janice. She asks the servants who belong to the secret book club for help in finding out who killed him. When Hank disappears, Laura Lee has another mystery to solve - where did the cat go? As Laura, Mary, and Lucy talk to the various suspects, they eventually solve the case. A bit silly, but a good read.

Enjoyable

This second book in the series was just as delightful as the first. It’s an easy read. The characters are likable. I’m reality, the staff had way too much spare time, so that part is unrealistic. There’s a lot of mixing between staff and the upper crust. It’s sure not Downton Abbey, but then it’s America. Things are different here, I suppose. All in all, it’s a pleasant way to spend a rainy day.

I like clean cozy mysteries, with good grammar and interesting characters. This story met all these criteria. It takes place in an interesting house with secret rooms and tunnels all over the place, a little girl who needs friends and an interesting heroine and her accomplices.

Who dun it?

Another exciting mystery from CeeCee James. After selling the crown Miss Janice is able to make repairs to the old manor and, once again, host elaborate dinner parties. However, when one of her dinner guests dies at her party the secret book club ladies are brought on the case.

Mrs. Fitzwater’s nephew, Andy suddenly passes away at a party at Ms. Janices'.
Mrs. Fitzwater asks the book club to look into it and even includes herself as one of the people Andy had taken advantage of with his get rich quick schemes.

Pro's:
Developed characters, and a fun storyline.
Con's:
I didn't understand the blurb.
No member of the book club was targeted.

A Murder At A Dinner Party

This book was full of interesting characters plus a puzzling murder to solve.
So many characters were guilty of something but who is guilty of murder?
The prime detective in this book is a servant in a mansion with many secrets of its own.
A quick read and very enjoyable.
I highly recommend it if you are looking for a diversion.

Old fashioned

Lovely to come across hidden tunnels and secret gardens in a modern mystery. Today's stories lean so much on technology but these just use observations and mental exercise. Can't wait for the next one.

Abrupt

This story was not as cohesive as the first one. The ending seemed rushed and abrupt. I liked the characters, but even they seemed to have lost many of the endearing qualities that were found in the first story. The only exception was the little girl Sofia.

Stunning

This mystery weaves weaves the cultures of privilege and servitude of working for the wealthy seamlessly. The eccentricities are as apparent as the tight bonds the characters form, regardless of social stations. A great read!

Barely 3 stars. Very little character development, along with an unrealistic setting make this book not terribly believable, in fact this book might be called implawsible. However, it is a very quick read.

So many characters so many duties so little time when you got to catch a murderer. A simple dinner turns into tragedy. He dies in front of everyone but how.

Unmet potential

I enjoy the series' premise of a secret book club that solves local mysteries. Less enjoyable, however, is the "Upstairs, Downstairs" vibe, especially considering the story is set in modern America; also, the characters are woefully underdeveloped.
