Lord Townsend’s been skulking about France for weeks, having fled London with a broken heart. Why’d he have to lose the love of his life, the beautiful Lady Ophelia? And to his damned best friend? If he can’t have Ophelia, he’ll have vengeance. He vows retribution upon Lord Wescott and returns from France with a solid plan.
A solid plan that swiftly goes awry.
Lady Jane McConall is minding her business—and her small winter garden—when she learns she’s to wed the devastatingly handsome Marquess of Townsend. Goodness, who on earth would refuse? She vows to be the very best wife to this dark, mysterious man, to make him love her even though they’re little more than strangers. She doesn’t realize yet that her prospective husband nurtures a long-standing affinity for order and discipline.
Nor does she realize a plot is afoot, a plot that will come undone at the worst possible time...

I absolutely adore Annabel Joseph's writing. To go from writing one of my all time favorite book series Rough Love (honestly if you haven't read it please don't walk but run to go and find it) which is set in modern times to writing disciplinary regency era love stories she can do no wrong.
This spin off series is definitely different from the original but that makes sense, you can't keep writing the same books and these sons from the original series H's obviously had different upbringings (nicer parents for one) so it would make sense that these H's have less baggage and are kinder in their marriages although don't worry there is still plenty of disciplinary spanking and rough starts to their marriages.
Jane was an absolute delight. Her love of animals and nature made me instantly love her and her naivety was actually sweetly endearing. She's so eager to please her new husband who at times I wanted to smack but he was also in a way sweetly endearing in his troubles to get over Ophelia and his bungled revenge plot.
Why not 5 stars. Well I have high standards with Annabel Joseph and her writing of steamy scenes and to me this book could have done with a bit more of that. The spanking for the most part was disciplinary and not in a sexy lead up to sex. We were also told about their bedroom antics after the fact and I would have liked to have had a bit more than the handful of fairly tame love making. I know I shouldn't compare to the original series but the H's in that were quite inventive with ginger and other fun things in the bedroom.
I'm quite greedy really because I do think the relationship in this book was more developed that the original series couples but I also wanted that steam as well.
Okay. I want to start of by saying, that I was SO excited when this came out. I have waited for Annabel to continue her Properly Spanked series, with her Legacy one, about the sons of the couples from the PS series (which I LOVED). I will probably rant a bit now and there will be spoilers too - but I just can't help it, I need to voice my frustrations - and boy, am I frustrated 🙄
I was SO disappoint with this to be perfectly honest. Not that it's a bad book pr say, it was just that I personally felt Annabel took the easy route. She didn't (imo) give me dept, her characters, specially Townsend fell flat, the story itself was lacking emotion, and I felt like they never evolved.
I LOVED the heroine Jane. How fun it was that she was a naturalist, loving and caring for animals the way she did. I thought it was hilarious that first time she met Townsend, she talked about frogs, fish ponds and water system 😂 The person she was from the start, she was at the end too - and I kinda liked that. I liked that she didn't change her personality. She was true to herself, al though she did try to rein in some of her peculiar ways (she never dressed as a man, in their marriage). She was giving her all, trying to be the best she could be, and make Townsend proud of her, without compromising too much of her self. (Loved the fact she called her pet python Mr. Cuddles) 😂
Townsend on the other hand 🙄 On page 5 I already hated him. He was bratty, whiney, behaving poorly and just being a mean ass to be honest. His love of his life Ophelia (really dude ? She didn't even know you excisted) married his former best friend Wescott, and Towns flee to Europe licking his wounds. Now he comes up with this plan to marry the woman Wescott was meant to marry before he was caught with Ophelia. Towns has it wrong though, so he asks for Jane's hand instead of June (who was Wescotts former intended, now married to Lord something) brilliant plan 🙄 He starts the marriage by lying to Jane. He continues the lie, and he keeps it up until the last 3 chapters in the book. He was not honourable, he was not being truthful and he wasn't behaving very gentlemanly. Something I had a hard time believing, giving who his parents were - and the fact that specially his father was such a strong character, in the Properly Spanked series. I never believed for one second, that he honestly loved Jane. There was this big scene at a ball, where Jane learns the truth, a lot is happening, but I felt it coulda been more. She eventually forgives him (too fast imo) but why ? Yes he apologized, but I didn't feel like he was sorry enough. Their whole marriage was a lie, a lie he build, a lie he kept going - and he just says "sorry. I love you" and then it's all good ? 🤔🙄 No dude. No! I wanted him to beg, I wanted him to realize what an absolute ass he behaved like. I wanted his friends to be like "So not cool man" and his family, specially his father to be like "You are out of line son, you did this, you fix this or I will put a cane to your backside".. I never really believed him, and I didn't believe the love. I believed Jane loved him (just couldn't understand why ?) But I felt like she was the one to give and give and give, and all he did was take, take, take. The lovestory just wasn't right (imo). The sex was just.. blah.. The deflowering scene was good. But the rest just.. Come'on, the man thought of Ophelia more than once.. it was just not right.
Now I love a good spank and I love kink. Something Annabel always does SO well. But even that seemed ... off ? 😏 There was 3 spanking scenes, but they were not very well explained. It just seemed like he searched for an excuse to spank her, because he was turned on by it, not really because she did something terrible wrong. Okay sure, I will say that when she wanders off into the woods, sure she deserved punishment. But 25 blows with a fresh birch rod seemed beyond harsh to me, and not something I felt was justified good enough. When Jane learns the truth at the ball, he try's to make it seem like he has valid reason to try and spank her in the parlor ? Are you crazy or just stupid man ? Wtf 😳
When you write about spanking, BDSM or domestic discipline it needs to be believeable, it needs to fit with the story, the characters and the punishment must be explained and never exceed the "crime" in my eyes. As I said before, I wasn't getting that. I felt he just did it, because he could, honestly. And Jane just accepted it, because she was a pleaser and so in love with him.
A good erotic (kink/bdsm) HistRom (imo) has an amazing lovestory and steamy hot sex scenes - and this book failed in that. I soooo expected more from Annabel, I expected the sex to be dripping hot as it was in "To tame a Countess" (I adore the Earl of Warren) and the love to be deep, convincing, to pull me in.
All I got from this was a heads up, about the future storyline of the last two sons - a whole lot of frustrations and it kinda just felt like this was a story she did, because she had to 🙄😏

Gw baca sambil, ini kalau Jane tau motifnya Edward, wis lah... kelar hidup lo mas! Ini harus baca buku 1 nya si biar tau gimana Edward marah2nya ke temennya pas die ruined Lady Opelia yg dia idolakan (mikirnya sih cinta), mungkin oke aja baca buku 2 langsung tapi esensinya akan kurang... menurut gw ya ^^
Edward, Marquess of Townsend atau biasa dipanggil Lord Townsend aja sih (anaknya buku Training Lady Townsend itu yg sekarang udah jadi Duke), pas buku 1 kan dia mengira kalau dia jatuh cinta sama Lady Opelia penyanyi opera yg punya suara super merdu dan cantik, elegan ya, malah akhirnya ruined pas ditolongin sama Marquess of Wescott (buku 1) dan Wescott harus nikahin Opelia. Masalahnya adalah, si Edward ini kaga pernah nunjukin atau bahkan bilang kalau die naksir Opelia, lah Opelianya aja kaga tau kalu Edaward ini exist (baka banget kan). Edward sakit hati pas temennya nikahin Opelia trs die pergi ke Paris selama berbulan-bulan, sampai dia tiba2 dapet insiperasi buat balas dendam ke Wescott, caranya
Seru deh... kayaknya buku berikutnya adeknya Edward si Rosaline sama salah satu dr 2 yg blm nikah itu.. kali ya
I absolutely loved Annabel Joseph's Properly Spanked series, a wonderful erotic spanking series set during the Regency period, so I was happy to hear that she was doing a series on the next generation!
I started to read the first book in the series, Rival Desires, but the heroine was a little Mary Sue for my current mood, so I switched over to A Proper Lord's Wife, which was much more my speed.
In Rival Desires, Townsend fell for Ophelia, an aristocratic opera singer, and although he never showed his undying devotion to her, he felt betrayed when Wescott ended up having to marry her to cover up the scandal of staying with her overnight at an inn, after a fire broke out and he rescued her.
In A Proper Lady's Wife, Townsend decides to get back at Wescott by marrying the woman Wescott was originally intended to marry... um yeah. I'm not trying to be snarky but I'm still trying to do the math to add it up. There is no mention of Wescott's love or even affection for his jilted bride, but maybe I need to read the first book to get the scoop. Moving on.
Townsend mistakenly ends up offering for the hand of the jilted bride's sister, due to a mix-up in their similar sounding names. Unfortunately, he can't back out of the proposal without looking like a cad, so he makes the best of it with Jane, a naturalist with orange hair who likes to garden, and has two pets, an albino python called Mr. Cuddles, and a crippled rabbit named Bouncer.
This is a story for all of those that enjoy the odd duckling landing the complete babe of the Ton couple.
The Good
1. Townsend doesn't fall for Jane right away. More believable, and added more angst to the story.
Townsend isn't particularly disparaging of Jane nor is he completely *~*enchanted~*~ by her originality, which can sometimes take me out of this couple type. It does take time for Townsend to form an opinion about Jane. He notices her eccentricities but he doesn't overcorrect, something that I felt was a good thing and a bad thing in the Properly Spanked series (the heroes would take the most minor infraction as an excuse for spanking, which is good from a spanking perspective, but bad from a story perspective).
In the Author's Note, Joseph says that she intended for this story to be spanking-heavy but it turned out to be a gentler story, and I honestly enjoyed it.
2. Jane is a doormat but she is a sweet one.
Her sweetness and her ignorance contributed to the emotional heart of the story.
The Bad
1. More angst - or having that angst come to a more satisfying crescendo.
I am not saying that I wanted to see Townsend actively harbour love for Ophelia (which is bringing me horrific flashbacks of Carolyn Jewel's Surrender to Ruin or Drake's Rakes). Hell no. But that there were more events to complicate and develop that tension.
Townsend's tension of being married to the "wrong" woman, while Jane's tension of being in love with the man of her dreams, but sensing something is off. It was really well-done so I had some high hopes for some drama when everyone would meet in London, and Jane would discover the truth.
Overall, a fun read and I'm excited to read Marlowe's story - I am such a sucker for silver-haired heroes! Hopefully it is very spicy!
Meh I don’t know. I love Annabel Joseph but this one didn’t really work out for me. The h was too naive and I liked the H even less. I love a spanking, but not when she’s spanked for small lies while he’s lying all the time about way worse things. Makes the discipline feel empty and unfair. The ending felt unsatisfactory . I love the series, just not this book
The H is a hypocritical ass for a good 80% of the book and it would only be that his wife is so lovely that he gets forgiven. She has doubts so you have empathy for her as she doesn't come across as stupid.
If you read Rival Desires, then you’re familiar with Lord Townsend. Bless him and his silly ideas of revenge. Bless Jane and her wonderfully big heart. At the very start of this book, your emotions are felt. You will laugh, cry, laugh some more, cry even more, it’s an emotional roller coaster, and so worth the ride. I will say that it’s not a typical Annabel Joseph, there is spanking (of course) but this story is more on the emotional, heart touching side of Ms Joseph. And to very honest, Jane is too gentle and sweet a character to handle the full force of a Ms Joseph disciplinary story. Which is why I love Ms Jospeh’s stories so much. Even though I would expect more, the characters she give life to, are given exactly what they need and can handle. If you love the original Properly Spanked series, and Rival Desires, you will enjoy this story just as much
Udah lama banget ga baca HR, bahasanya berasa berbalas pantun dan berkode2.
Ide novelnya sebenernya bagus, mo bales dendam ngelamar mantan tunangan temennya, taunya salah orang, malah ngelamar adiknya.

This is why I love reading. A Proper Lord's Wife had me laughing and crying. It is everything I love in a romance novel. A demanding Lord, a sweet Lady, passionate and love. Annabel Joseph didn't waste anytime drawing the reader into this story. I was captivated with Lord Townsend and Lady Jane. They weren't a likely couple but they worked so well together. I loved watching them grow as individuals as well as a married couple. Don't hesitate to one click this sweet story.
Townsend is irrationally angry at one of his former best friends for stealing the woman he loved(who didn’t even know who he was). He has a half cocked plan of marrying Jane the girl his friend originally intended to marry. However he botched it from the start because his friend was supposed to marry her sister June. Jane is a source of gossip for being an avid naturalist. This was probably my favorite of both series even though Townsend thinking Ophelia as much as he did was heart breaking for me. The MOST heartbreaking was bouncer though. Overall Book ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Lord Townsend started as an idiot who could not stop pining for this other woman who married his best friend but oh how delicious and satisfying it is to see him warm up and slowly fall for our sweet, innocent Jane.
I just adore how sweet, caring, and intelligent Jane is. I loved how pliant and eager to please she is for her husband. She was the odd one but she was very relatable.
And Edward... oh my god... this man. He was so dreamy and honorable, keeping his promise and fixing the mess he made by keeping Jane satisfied and happy. What a man. I loved their dynamic so much.
Jane was delightful but, otherwise, this book didn't quite live up to the original series. I just needed more emotion, more grovel and, and I can’t believe I'm saying this, more steam. Overall, an enjoyable regency romp but not Ms. Joseph's best.
I haven't read an Annabel Joseph story that I didn't love! Such a great story teller. In this story I loved the humor that came with the antics of these amazing Characters.
Joseph’s historical romance is set in 1822. Smarting and angry, Lord Edward Townsend seeks revenge when he proposes to Lady Jane McConall. When Edward learns that he’s made a mistake, it’s too late and must marry Jane.
The whole Jane and June misunderstanding just seemed too silly. And frankly from the moment I read that the heroine kept a pet python and a pet rabbit... couldn't have anyone guessed at how that would end?
A simple sweet read where mistake and revenge brought Jane and Edward together in a marriage. 💖
As funny as it sounds, i cried hard at the death of Jane’s pet and her love towards animals shown throughout the book. Not too spicy btw as previous series but I really like it!
Second reading: I love this couple. I truly can’t wait for the next book. My only criticism is that this generation is a bit soft compared to the previous one, so Training Lady Townsend continues to be my favorite.
I could not put this one down! I really like that the characters were in roles a little different than what we often see in historical romance. A heroine that actually wanted to marry the hero was such a great departure from the many wilting or railing brides. The hero who was carrying a torch for another woman, while actively trying to be a good husband, made for an interesting dynamic. I also love that the characters were multidimensional. She was more than a bluestocking. He was more than a stuffed shirt. They came across like real people. Can I preorder the next book yet???
