On her thirteenth birthday, Thalliya watched her entire family get slaughtered. The humans cut off their fins and hung their heads from their Viking ships. Left cradling what few pieces remain of her twin, Thalliya screamed to the gods for vengeance.
Answered by the Goddess of Love and War, Thalliya now guards the seas without mercy.
HE FIGHTS WITHOUT FEAR
Ragnar is hired to take care of the mermaid terrorising the western seas. With seventeen kills under his belt, he thinks little of venturing into the Mouth of Hel. It'll be a quick job with a quick pay…
But when his ship is wrecked and the majority of his crew is drowned, Ragnar realises that it's not a mermaid he's hunting. It's a morgen, a dark mermaid, that's hunting him.
As an author of fantasy and paranormal romance, she just needs to know some things, like how many dead babies can fit in a bathtub (34, 52.5 if blended), what human meat tastes like (dry pork), how to get away with murder (it’s really hard to tell the difference between a drowning accident and a drowning murder, just saying), etc.
This non-serial killer lady lives with her partner, who often drags her outside, claiming ‘sunlight is necessary’ and ‘social interactions are a good thing’. Given her questionable search history, she goes along with it, thinking it’ll be better to have less ‘aloof serial killer vibes’ should the police ever knock on her door…

I really enjoyed this dark re-telling of the Little Mermaid. I haven’t read any other books like this and this read has made me want to.
This was an action packed short read, with a lovely fairytale ending . This novella was very descriptive and you could tell a lot of research had been put in to make the story as close to historically correct as possible. Another very positive point to this novella is the pronunciation guide and character guide at the start of the novella, as due to the length of the novella this was hard to achieve through just the story alone.
A lot happened in this story in a short amount of time which made it very fast-paced but also sometimes confusing as characters appeared without much explanation requiring you to refer back to the character guide at the beginning. But this did not stop me being gripped by this novella and finishing it in one day.
Can’t wait to read the other books in the Fairytales of the Myth series.
We all love fairy tales. No library is complete without at least one collection of fairy tales. I had quite a few. I still do. Out of all those collections, one of my favorite stories was “The Little Mermaid.” I adored the Disney version, so I was quite curious when I came upon the original Hans Christian Anderson story. While the endings are a bit different, I quite liked the original.
Miranda Grant’s “The Little Morgen” is a retelling of “The Little Mermaid.” The Little Morgen is the second novella within her Fairytales of the Myth Series. Thalliya was young, innocent, and carefree. At the age of thirteen, she looked forward to exploring the world of humans with her twin. But in one horrifying second, her world turned upside down. It started with her twin sister. One by one, Thalliya watched as her family was slaughtered by Vikings before her very eyes. Her screams of horror caught the attention of the goddess. For a price, the goddess gifted Thalliya with the power to lure men to their doom. From that day, Thalliya became cold and ruthless; an all-powerful dark mermaid of the depths whom no one could destroy. Ragnar has killed several times. He is on a mission that nothing and no one could deter him from. His last step: get rid of the dark terror that dwells in the sea. His determination to succeed draws assistance from a goddess that appears a little crazed. With her help, Ragnar is sure that he will achieve what he set out to do: kill the little morgen.
This short story will have you hooked from the beginning. The author draws you in with her descriptive writing. As you read, the story unfolds in your mind as if you were watching a movie. Her method of writing leaves you cheering the characters on and hoping the bad ones would get their comeuppance. The story is definitely not one for kids. This is an adult only fairy tale. If you are looking for something new and steamy, this fairy tale retelling is for you. It has a little bit of everything: romance, adventure, magic, and fantasy. The Little Morgen is a five-star read worth adding to your library.
A most extraordinary dark retelling of Andersen timeless tale
“The Little Morgen” by Miranda Grant is a dark gothic retelling of the wonderful classic “The Little Mermaid” by H.C. Andersen originally published on 1837. A multitude of version have been re-written since that date, some good and worth reading, some others bad or even atrocious. Miranda Grant’s version is extraordinary, if Andersen came back from the grave and found the book, he will be in fact pleased, this retelling maintains the gothic underlying feeling of the original and bring it to a whole new level. The story succeeds in blending the original story with various mythological tropes into a coherent tale that is both, true to the original version and extraordinary original, a most unique feat.
Grant’s writing-style is captivating, with the dark beauty of a pure gothic tale, with immediately recognizable, realistic characters, easy to relate with, credible and multifaceted, wherever the side they fall (good, evil or as the majority in-between). Whether you know the story already, and I mean the original story, not that watered-down Disney’s versions, or are new to the core of the tale, Grant’s version will captivate you and make you reflect on the sense of living, while being entertaining and satisfying at the very same time.
Should you decide to just only pick one retelling of the story, let it be this!
Hello there, lovelies! I first of all wanted to thank the author for having sent this novella my way, in exchange for my honest opinion. I had thoroughly enjoyed her previous book and I actually have reviewed it on this blog. Sadly, I have to admit that I didn’t like this novella as much as I loved her first book, mostly because I did find the length of it a bit too short, which made the story in some parts seem quite confusing, even more when we were exposed to so many characters in such a short time. I also personally thought that it didn’t help with the characters and their relationships, because we didn’t get to properly meet them and neither we got to see the relationships develop fully. I do want to say that still I enjoyed the concept of the story and the premises of the characters. Certainly, a lot of research and attention were put in the world-building, which I appreciated, and I wouldn’t be against to knowing more about this world in the future, with other installments since this novella certainly caught my attention and seduced me in a world of Nordic men and mermaids. Sadly, I personally still have to say that we might have needed a few more pages or introductions to get better acquainted with the characters and the plot.
This is the second novella in the fairytales of myth series and I was as hooked on this one as I was the first it really doesn't seem to go on long enough.
The raw pain and anguish Thalliya feels watching her family murdered is horrendous i feel it with her, I also get why she freezes that heartache is certainly one that takes your breath away!
The relationship between Ragnar and Thalliya and how it grows and flourishes is very steamy but also needed by both of them. Its sad to know it doesn't last.
I enjoyed the fast pace of the tale and that it doesn't hang around there is adventure from the start deffinatly a fantastic read
4/5 absolutly cannot wait for the next installment

Wow! I am loving these new dark fairytales. Miranda Grant is taking the stories that we know and love and retelling them in a new and interesting way. It is a short novella and I read it all in one sitting. Though I liked the first book in this series better I still really enjoyed this one and I am very much looking forward to the next one because I already know that the Beauty and the Beast retelling is going to be awesome. All lovers of fairytales should pick up these books. You won’t be disappointed! *I received an ARC for an honest review*
I really had a lot of fun reading this book, the story felt like an original story and still felt like the original story. The characters were great and I really enjoyed going through this and enjoyed the way the author tells a story.

This is the first book I have read of Miranda's and I'm really impressed with this novella. The retelling is original and had me interested within a few pages. I absolutely loved the kickass female characters and the writing.
Looking forward to reading more of this authors work.
Content warning: swears and sex. Don't mind that? Full steam ahead!
This is a fairly short novella but very immersive and gritty, like the type of fairy tales your great great great grandma would have had before they got sanitized, but with a bit of modernity thrown in as well. 5 stars as a entertaining immersive experience you can read in one sitting.
An incredible sequel, well written and nuanced with fascinating characters and satisfying arcs with brilliant conclusions! A tragic heroine and protagonist, a wonderful read overall!!
I loved this! So many in-depth details. It was a movie playing inside your head! So much action and dark fantasy elements/ characters. I enjoy and completely recommend it.
Action packed and fast paced without compromising on well developed characters and a vivid ancient world full of myths and monsters. Delentia is fast becoming my favourite recurring character.
I really enjoyed this short novella. A dark fairy tale retelling of The Little Mermaid with plenty of action and romance. It was interesting to see both sides of the story from Thalliya and Ragnar. Ragnar is trying to discover more about his past as a half-elf and trying to save someone he loves by finding a way into the afterlife. Thalliya is full of vengeance and trying to protect the seas. Lots of romance (not suitable for younger readers). A much darker story to the original and a fun, quick read that I enjoyed overall.
THE LITTLE MORGEN is the second novella in the Fairytales of the Myth series, and in case you've not realised, this time it is the Little Mermaid that gets the dark retelling.
This one I didn't enjoy quite as much, and let me tell you why. There is just too much that goes on for the number of pages you get! This made the story feel a bit disjointed to me, the pace is slightly too quick. There were so many characters and I didn't really get a feel for any of them, including Thalliya and Ragnar. There was no time to build a connection between them, or for a relationship to develop. I also found the epilogue slightly confusing as I've only just read Burn Baby Burn and the names given for Bjerner's parents jolted me.
What I did enjoy was the amount of world-building Miranda Grant puts into every story. The details were amazing. One of my favourite parts was when Ragnar bit into an orange!
So, not one of my favourites, but still a great story if you like dark and twisted retellings.

I should have realised from the first book that this would be a loose look at the little mermaid......I didn't though. This is no sweet story, and the only song you'll find is a siren song luring men to their deaths.
Loss is the catalyst for The Little Morgen, both Thalliya and Ragnor experience it and are thrown together because of it.......and yet again the Gods have their hands in what unfolds.
I really liked that there are links between the first book and this but the epilogue was bittersweet for me. So I'm hoping the next book will again have links and that I'll find something nice in that link.
As with the first this is dark with a bit of passionate sex and plenty of death.
Thalliya is granted incredible powers by a goddess in order to help her get vengeance on the humans who destroyed her mermaid family. 10 years later, Ragnar is sent to vanquish the mermaid who's terrorizing the seas. If he defeats her, he'll be able to enter the underworld and rescue his loved one. But when the opportunity comes to strike Thalliya down, will Ragnar be able to go through with it?
I knew that this book would draw heavily on THE LITTLE MERMAID and other relevant myths and folktales, but I didn't expect that it would lean quite so heavily into the gore and psychological horror of those classic stories. Thalliya and Ragnar were well-motivated in both of their pursuits, which gave the plot a great skeleton. My issue was with the (lack of) connective tissue. I felt like they jumped around with their actions, intentions, and emotions with very little prompting or explanation. It kept the story moving at a fast pace, but left me with more questions than answers. The ending was quite abrupt and kept the door wide open for a follow-up.

Or so Ragnar thought... Thalliya swam into his heart and changed that...
A dark retelling of The Little Mermaid, I loved the attention to detail, and how the author added her twist to the tale... Thalliya is a siren, and Ragnar is the one that can't speak, and must communicate in silence...
The world building, melding the historical and paranormal was amazing...
This story felt a little rushed, ended abruptly, and I would have liked more... Enjoyed it all the same, and can't wait to read more from the author.
Quick and easy read about the revenge a mermaid seeks against those who killed her family. She terrorizes many ships and is merciless. Ragnor is hired to put an end to the mermaid in order to learn how to save his son. As he hunts for her, his ship quickly becomes under attack and he realizes it’s actually her, the morgen ( a dark mermaid) hunting him. He prays to the gods and goddesses for help and one answers revealing her secret and the key to her undoing. But when the time comes, can he finally put an end to her?
Fast story with some plot building, a little romance, and lots of action. Quick dark retelling of The Little Mermaid.
The concept was great. The execution? Not so much. It’s quick, confusing and unsatisfying. I have a feeling reading further into the series might offer something more but I have no interest. It was clunky and hard to follow. The Viking was a jerk. The mermaid was too for that matter. There was no build in their “relationship” if you could even call it that. Don’t even get me started on the random character from modern times they tossed in there. This story was supposed to take place in the time of Vikings yet it was a weird mashup of modern slang and “ye olden words”.
It definitely felt like a waste of time and money. There was not much writing and poor execution of character description. The only good thing is that it was not expensive. I feel like I would like it more if it had development of characters and story. It felt very rushed and pushed. While the concept was interesting, the story just didn’t meet the expectations. The ending was also very quick and felt like the author just wanted to finish the story and be done with it to start a new one.
I may not have been in the mood to read this or I may not have preferred the writing style so I didn't really get into the story. I didn't realize I dropped it until I picked it back up and tried again but ultimately decided it wasn't for me.
1.5 out of 5 rating for me!

This author does have a known VERY dark series but she writes other genres too. This one does not have a lot of spice but a good story line. I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone. I have read her VERY dark series, the Shadow series and loved it, but I’m twisted. This isn’t even close to that. So you should be safe in this story, lol. Enjoy and good reading loves💚
I wish this could've been longer so the relationship could've been more explored however I think the instalove worked for that ending (which I really liked actually), I also would've liked them to deepen in the aspect of grief but otherwise it was a fun story
Only Miranda Grant can “take The Little Mermaid” and make it dark and twisty and *spicy* and make me completely obsessed with the story and devour it all in one go!! 😍😍 I can’t wait to see where the next story goes! Totally going to download it right now!!!! Ahhhhhh!!! I’m obsessed!!!! 😍
