Resolutions for an Arbitrary Holiday

Rate this book
Petter sneaks out of the New Year’s party he didn’t want to go to and treks to an old burial site he’s dying to see. Alone. Without telling anyone on a freezing December night. Without cell service…a huge problem when he twists his ankle.

Someone passes by Isak’s house on the path leading to the stone ship. When the person never returns, Isak worries and sets off to investigate. What he finds is Petter, a pack of sparklers, and an instant connection.

Under a starry sky, they learn they have a lot in common. Will the attraction burn hot and fizzle out like the fireworks going off over their heads when they return to the real world? Or will it deepen, grow, and turn into something real? Something everlasting like the stone ship?

4.5 stars Nell Iris just writes the best romance, the proof is here, again.

Before you start to read the book take a look on the Internet at Ale’s Stones in Sweden.

Escaping a New Years' party and hike alone, without telling anyone, to the remote ancient stone ship at the top of the hill, was a bad idea.
Here he is, with a twisted throbbing ankle. No way Petter can get back, it’s so cold.

Isak lives in the last house on the road to the stone ship, he saw a man walking to the stone ship but he never returned. To be sure the man will be okay Isak takes a look.

When Isak finds Petter in the dark and they start to talk a sparkle hits them both. What follows is something endearing, sweet, and highly romantic.

I’m always in awe of how a short story like this, feels like one full novel, everything we need to know is there, their lives, their personalities, the past, the present, and a beautiful future.
I adored this uplifting narrative!

I loved this sweet story about two men being true to themselves and breaking away from societal and family expectations. I read it in one sitting.

The story feels very real, and is also romantic and heartfelt. I loved the description of Isak’s home, and the scenery surrounding it. I always enjoy reading stories set in different places, so that was an extra bonus too. I thought the setting was very atmospheric, especially with the backdrop of the ancient stone ship, which almost felt magical given how these two souls connect and share their hopes, dreams, and history.

Although the story is short, it packs a lot into its few pages, and builds a wonderful picture of Petter and Isak. I loved reading about the beginning of their friendship and relationship, and enjoyed the epilogue catching with them a year later.

“Resolutions For An Arbitrary Holiday” is the perfect book to start the new year with. It’s a sweet holiday story with two people being true to themselves and finding love. I love reading Nell Iris’s books, you never feel like you’re just reading a novella, the characters and story are always well written and you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. If you’re looking for a cute holiday story to start the new year with, give this one a go.

I give this one 4.5 stars.

Super cute and sweet

Quirky new years romance with sparkles and snowflakes, what more could you ask for? Low heat with plenty of laughter and a satisfying HEA. Wish it had been longer!

Petter is attending a New Year’s Eve party in a small seaside town in southern Sweden. He really did not want to come but got pushed into by his long time friend. When he’s finally had enough, he grabs a lantern, a bottle of booze, some sparklers and a lighter and heads off to climb up to an ancient site with a stone ship. He’s always wanted to see it but his parents would never let him visit it properly. Unfortunately he trips and sprains his ankle when he’s reached the top. Of course he doesn’t have a phone signal, so he can’t call for help. And honestly, except for the pain in his ankle and the slightly chilling wind, he’s enjoyed his trek. He’s just not sure how he’ll get back down to his friends below.

Isak has seen someone head up the hill toward the stone ship. But when he doesn’t seen anyone returning and it’s been some time, he decides to go check and make sure nothing is wrong. He discovers Petter with his sprained ankle and his bad beverage choice and his celebratory sparklers 🙂 They sit and watch the fireworks and listen to the ocean and talk about why they should or shouldn’t make resolutions 😉 But the chill is getting worse and Petter’s ankle isn’t getting any better either. So Isak helps Petter down the hill. When they get to Isak’s house, he offers to help with his ankle and get something to ice it and elevate it for a while.

They fall into easy conversation. Petter has never had a connection with someone like this before. He finds Isak wildly attractive, but he’s not sure why Isak would bother with him. But as the evening continues, and both men reveal their true selves, it’s obvious that there is something, a spark, between them. The question is, will it still be there in the morning?

As usual, Nell Iris writes a truly beautiful short story that tugs at the heartstrings and provides hope for those who have been unlucky in love. Petter and Isak have both done what’s expected of them and that in turn has led to them living somewhat unsatisfying lives. But they are both on a new path – to be more of their authentic selves. They’ve found a kindred spirit in one another with a serendipitous meeting because of a silly accident. Isak’s story is a little bit sad, but he’s a strong guy who is going to be fine in the end. Petter is finally getting his legs under him at nearly 30 and has finally decided it’s time for him to live his own life, not the one his parents insisted on 🙂 The lovely and evocative description of the small seaside town, Isak’s house and of course the stone ship overlooking the sea paint a clear picture of the setting for these men as they learn about one another. It all seems rather breathtaking and I would love to visit this place someday. For fans of a perfectly presented love story in a short format, I can’t think of any writer more up for that challenge than Nell Iris. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.

“Resolutions for an Arbitrary Holiday” by Neil Iris chronicles Petter’s New Year’s Eve decision to visit somewhere he’s always been interested in, with disastrous results…until Isak’s intervention, that changes the night to something worth celebrating.

This short and sweet contemporary gay romance reminds us to celebrate and accept our differences. I love that it shows how decisions can have far-reaching effects (and haven’t we all beaten ourselves up over poor decisions?) and unexpected benefits. The gentle evolution of the relationship between these two guys and the genuine caring that shines from Isak’s pores made me feel warm and fuzzy while reading this story, and I love that they can be awkward but free to be who they are. There are great images (“It’s extremely difficult being romantic when we’re two marshmallows rolling on top of each other, trapped underneath a net.”) and I connected with both characters immediately because of their self-deprecating personalities and their abilities to laugh at themselves. I have definitely been in search of feel-good stories the past few months, and this was a perfect for my mood.

What a fantastic little story. There is no heat it’s not anyway steamy but the intimacy between these too and they details in with the author describes a kiss is beautiful. I finished on New Year’s Eve and it was a fantastic story to finish 2020 with.

Isak spots a lone stranger climbing to the top of a hill on New Year’s Eve all by himself when he does not see him returning he decides to follow him to the top.

Petter had to get away from the Party that he never wanted to go to in the first place but claiming to the top of a hill on his own on a cold wet New Years Eve was probably not the best idea especially when he falls and hurts his ankle. Little did he know that faith would intervene.

Set in a beautiful little village on top of a hill on New Year’s Eve it’s all told over one night but it’s not rushed or cramped it’s just the perfect length for this story. I would highly recommend it.

This was such a sweet story, and fun to read. I couldn’t have stopped the goofy grin on my face if I had tried. I love heartwarming, holiday stories, and I loved that this one centered around New Year's Eve.

Petter and Isak were great characters. I loved them, flaws, and all. Although, really, their ‘flaws’ were only perceived that way by others because they didn’t fit the ‘mold’ they were supposed to (so says the world). I enjoyed how easily they understood each other, and ‘spoke’ each other’s language. It was endearing.

While this story was brief, it was complete, and it was perfect. If you are looking for high heat, this is not the book for you. For those who don’t like high heat, this is right up your alley. It was low heat (lots of kissing only, w/o nudity) and all heart. It was well written and absolutely charming. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Creating your own future, crafting your own traditions and finding love.  Beautifully written with words that are music to your soul.  This is a delightful novella that is filled to the brim with thoughtful words, meaningful moments and actions that create a future of love.

There is so much to love about this story from the insightful and honest dialogue to the thoughtful and heartfelt dialogue.  The setting of New Years Eve at the ancient stone site where Petter goes to celebrate his new direction to Isak's old and intriguing cottage that is filled with character and warmth.  The characters are so likable and well developed.  The writing flows beautifully and the pacing of the story keeps your heart fully engaged.

Highly recommended!

I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my honest opinion and review

Resolutions for an Arbitrary Holiday is a cute romance by Nell Iris. It's short, quick, and full of emotion.

Isak and Petter's meeting is definitely a cute one. But the sweetness is the way they immediately hit it off with one another. Both men face pressures and both don't want to cave to those expectations.

As usual with Nell's books, I am left in awe at how well Nell develops this short story. The characters are fully developed, the setting is fully established, and the feelings jump off the pages. Nell's ability to write such meaningful short stories is truly a gift.

Resolutions for an Arbitrary Holiday is sweet and romantic. Nell Iris adds plenty of atmosphere to the read, making everything a little more special. This tale covers one night and includes all the feels. It's the perfect little romance.

Such as sweet story!

Nell Iris has been my go-to MM author for short stories and short novellas for quite a while now and this book didn’t change that. It’s a sweet and tender story (no sex) about two men who meet in a kind of unusual way. The blurb describes it much better than I can so take a look at it.

Nell’s description of the setting and Isak’s home allowed me to visualize the place and made me want to visit there, even with snow. (I don’t like the cold. 😊)

The book gave me all kinds of feels. Everyone should meet and fall in love with someone like Isak; he’s perfect for Petter.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Friends, pick this one up because you'll treat yourselves with a fun and sweet holiday themed story. It's wonderfully atmospheric and you'll find yourselves transported to the freezing shores of Sweden, almost breathing the same cold air as the protagonists.

Even if it has a short page count, Nell Iris managed to make it feel like a fully fleshed out storyline, in a way that helped me really know Peter and Isak, with their pasts, present and hopes for their future. I felt the magic of their first meeting, the sweetness of their connection and made me smile at how cute they were together. And that epilogue...swoon!

This story is just fun and endearing, steamy and heartwarming. Enjoy!

Not instalove, but an immediate connection does spark and with a little bit of holiday, read liquid, courage, two men find something more than arbitrary. Petter and Isak are the kind of men that might not have met without a little cosmic help but absolutely needed to, thus the circumstances combining to bring them together. Their evolution was sweet, realistic, and lasting. It's the kind of sweet story that sucked me in and didn't let me go. I still think of moments of the story I wish were drawn out and that it were longer. Both men were real and likeable and inspired me to root for them. As with every other story by this author, I didn't want to let them go.

This is a sweet and delightful holiday story with amazing characters and a great storyline. I really enjoyed it but I wish that it was longer as I would love to spend more time with Petter and Isak as their relationship develops. They are perfect for each other, I love how they meet and that they have both learned to rely on themselves and that living for other people will not allow them to be happy. The changes they make in their lives in spite of the pressure from their families is inspiring. The ending is great and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Petter and Isak are complete strangers when they meet, but there's an instant connection when Isak, curious because he watched Petter pass by his house and yet, hadn't come back down in the middle of winter. Isak's a sweetheart for watching out for Petter in the first place, but as they get to know each other, he's the salve that Petter, who felt something was missing. A sweet short story and a celebration of possibilities for the new year!

I can be as much of a cynic as anyone else, but I do love a bit of insta-love. Yes, it’s unrealistic if handled clumsily. And yes, it just doesn’t happen for many ordinary folk, but sometimes a bit of wish-fulfilment, some sparkle and a slice of feel-good fiction is just what is needed.

This is one of those times.

Okay, so I have to admit the title is a little off-putting. It makes sense, but is clunky for such a lovely, light, deliciously romantic book. But ignore that bit, because the story itself is a real treat.

Petter leaves a boring party on New Year’s Eve and trots up a nearby hill for some solitary ruminating over love and life, then promptly twists his ankle. Along comes a concerned blond Norsk hero (Isak) who, having noticed him earlier and realised he hasn’t come back down the hill, goes to see if he’s all right. They hit it off.

And that, basically, is the story, but what a wonderful way the author had of making me care about these two characters. Petter is cute, angsty (but not too much) and sweet. Isak is a solid practical man with a heart of gold, not to mention blessed with Thor-like good looks. They have real chemistry and how the evening progresses is totally convincing. The course of their meeting and getting to know each other is played out on a stage of sparkling stars and a crisp, frosty landscape. It’s corny, it’s cute and I just loved it. The ending is great too.

Best served in front of a fire, with brandy-laced hot chocolate and cashmere socks. I’d definitely read more by this author based on this story.

Wonderful holiday romance, sweet and steamy! Peter and Isak are strangers when they meet but have chemistry and an instant connection. It was well written, although it’s a novella the story line was fleshed out perfectly. Loved Peter and Isak! I’m voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. This novella was sweet and heart-warming, just the perfect little thing for the holiday season.
Even with such a short number of pages, the characters are well developed and fleshed out. The scenery is so alive that it almost becomes another character, which works perfectly in order to make the story all the richer.
I'm so glad I read this one!

Quick, pacy short story that gives warm feels (despite being set in the Swedish winter).
Petter and Isak meet on NYE, with Petter being rescued by Isak after spraining his ankle.
much instant attraction, talking and promises follow.
What we don't see is the year in between but then the next NYE - well Isak's picnic is just great!

This was a short, insta-lust/love story. Nice for those who are interested in a cute, quick read. Both MC's are likeable, and I tend to be a sucker for men with tattoos, and man buns, so I really enjoyed that one of the MC's had both.
