The Recount is a realistic, action thriller comic book mini-series set in an unsettlingly recognizable American political climate written by Jonathan Hedrick and illustrated by Gabriel Ibarra Núñez and Sunil Ghagre, published monthly by Scout Comics.
When the US President is assassinated by one of his own security detail, a female Secret Service agent named Bree Barto must protect the Vice President at all costs from a mass conspiracy by a group calling themselves 'The Masses'. With nowhere to turn and no one to trust, these two women with completely opposing political views and beliefs must work together to preserve what’s left of American democracy.
That was intense. It's about a massive conspiracy to not only kill the President, not only everyone in his administration, but everyone who voted for him. People in your neighborhood showing up to murder you just because of who you voted for. It's like The Purge for politics. My only complaint is it's very vague on details of why they are doing this. If it's for a specific reason or just an extrapolation of today's cancerous political climate.
I’m guessing this will be the first 4 issues. I’ve been reading the singles and this issue 4 ended with a tag at the end saying “End First Term”. Anyway this was good. A political thriller where some crazies try who kill the President and are coming at full force to take out the vice as well. Some nice art and great action. The secret service woman who is trying to protect the new Madam President is a bad ass. She wasn’t playing with these people. Then once you find out who is behind this nonsense the shit just gets crazier. Curious to see how the next arc plays out.
Quite the fast paced, terror-inducing, political piece that fits very well in the era it comes from. It looks like a pretty good piece that goes into the fear going through people when it looks like their neighbors will turn on them; especially from the eyes of an army veteran. The way everything is presented evokes the feeling of trying to establish control and scrambling about it all.
Fortunately, there's a little positivity than just unloading all of your worst fears onto a story. For all the terror inflicted on people, for the screwups of some politicians, it's when the public inner feelings rise to the surface that events become more interesting. You might even say it has moderate sensibilities. But you'd have to look inside to see what I mean.
Read the trade 0-4 and man was I hooked read it in 2 fast paced sittings and got to thank Cowabunga Comics in Green Cove for having this book right in time to read before Hedrick comes to sign tomorrow morning at the comic shop :) The book is pretty vague as some others have reviewed but it is none the less action packed and terrifying. Also the art is sooo great! Can't wait for the next installment. Hopefully we will get more answers.
The United States of America has gone through some stuff over the past few years. Although The Recount was written prior to this turmoil it almost feels too real, almost.
The Recount was written by Jonathan Hedrick with art by Gabo Ibarra Nuñez, and Joe Bocardo (chapter 4), colors by Sunil Ghagre, and letters by Cristian Docolomansky. The four-issue series was released by Scout Comics beginning in November 2020.
Over the past few years I have been leaning more towards great independent comics and stuff based in the real world, less superhero stuff. Not that I don't still read my Marvel Comics.
In 2021, after the four-issue series wrapped, I stumbled upon The Recount and I was pleasantly surprised. Once I finished the four issues, I was begging for more.
Set in a far too realistic world where the US President is assassinated by one of his own security detail and a female Secret Service agent named Bree Barto must protect the Vice President at all costs from a mass conspiracy by a group calling themselves 'The Masses'. With nowhere to turn and no one to trust, these two women with completely opposing political views and beliefs must work together to preserve what’s left of American democracy.
The mix between fiction and something that seems like it could be real had me glued to the pages. In addition to Hedrick's great story, characters and flow of the book, the art by Nuñez keeps me engaged with the turning of each page.
The Recount is a great combination of action, thriller and drama that I makes me go back to reading the mini-series, over and over.
For a practically unknown creative team, The Recount is the perfect book to get their careers kick-started. So much so, the series was optioned for feature film by KadinCreative & Motor Content. Peter Landesman (Concussion, Kill the Messenger, Parkland) is set to direct and Nick Jones Jr. will co-write.
In May 2022, Hedrick teamed up with artist Gil Lopez to bring us another story entitled The Recount: Preamble which fed my addiction enough to get me by until the next time I can read this series.
This needs two things 1. Several Sequel issues 2. A film or TV adaptation, especially now that much of media is comic book centered, I feel like this story is one worth telling to a mass audience
