The Nephilim Legacy #1

Sins of the Nephilim: Fallen Conspiracy

Rate this book
The Magic Council declared my kind an abomination. Now I'm their only hope.

I’m a Nephilim, one of the unlucky few fathered by a fallen angel. If the supernatural elite finds out what I am, they’ll destroy me.
"Hide your magic and lay low," that's my mantra. Until a handsome guy up-to-the brim with magic appears at work and starts asking me questions.

Curse the fates, this guy can’t be fooled. Turns out he’s a high-profile angel and member of the Council of Nine — an ancient secret organization that fights a cult of dark Nephilim. What’s more bizarre is that the Council claims I’m the only one who can thwart the Nephilim's evil masterplan for a magical apocalypse. “Only a Nephilim can kill another Nephilim,” they said. To accomplish this mission, I have to procure the Scroll of Lies and hand it to the Council.

So what’s a poor girl to do? Accept the job with a pay raise, of course, and pray to the fates I’ll survive. Small relief, I won’t be alone in this suicidal mission: four gorgeous archangels and gods will accompany me.

Note: the four archangels and gods are definitely sexy, but this series isn’t a reverse harem. It’s a fast-paced, fun and sassy urban fantasy adventure.

This was a quick adventure read, with action and romance. Who doesn't like a story with angels and gods and other supernaturals. The ending gave me goosebumps " “I’ll hunt you down and make your life living hell!”

Man I loved this book. I seriously wish more authors know how to write a good angel book. One that captivates the reader and makes them excited.

I really am obsessed with angels right now, and I wanted to find some good YA urban fantasy books that dealt with them. There was Fallen, but that felt a little choppy. Halo was actually a good read and I enjoyed it. House Of Earth And Blood is another one I am getting to. I also have a bunch of Shadow Hunter books to read again, like Clockwork Angel.

When I mean angels, I mean celestial beings with feathered wings and haloes who possess supernatural divine powers. There’s a whole array of angel books to choose from in the YA genre, but the ones I come across are few and far in between. Most of them are either bland and uninteresting, or don’t really do the angel aspect correctly.

Now, this book? This book isn’t like that. This is one of the good angel books.

The lore, the angels, the world building, the characters. I just loved them all! Aiyana is a very spunky down to earth heroine. She isn’t annoying and she isn’t whiny. She’s hidden her Nephilim heritage all her life, as her kind is feared among the supernatural community.

It isn’t until she gets sent on a mission, that she realizes she has to stop a evil Nephilim from taking over the world with his dark forces. There’s also some romance in here, and it’s gentle and fun. No insta-love and it takes time to develop.

One more thing I liked- the action sequences and how Aiyana found her angel wings. I loved seeing how she used her powers (it’s a bunch of cool energy blasts that are like fireballs!!!) to fight. It felt like I was in a movie theater while reading these scenes!

I am just gushing over how much I enjoyed this book. I can’t wait to read the next book.

I want to say:
Aiyana the Nephilim offspring =
#FallGuy
#Doomedtofail
#TheQuest

Plot: half-Neph Aiyana is recruited by the secret council of 9 (angels and gods) to retrieve a scroll and defeat an evil Neph. Hello, that doubles the fee. Even if I am #untrainedandaggressive. I expect Aiyana to be used like toilet paper. She knows nothing about her heritage, and she is told she is their only hope. WTF?

Frankly, I love how magic is described: Gunpowder and used socks. Champagne. BItter lemon juice. Gasoline. But the magic system doesn’t seem planned out. The plot is.

However, the main character is arrogant. I mean, even if you have been told to retrieve a scroll from an evil man’s home, you don’t just break in and say “Gimme the scroll or I will take it by force”. Huh? That is similar to “Gimme your TV or I will take it by force.” He should point out that breaking and entering is a crime. There are no social interactions like “Hi, I am... and I didn’t knock; how rude of me. You are...?” For all she knows, he could be her uncle. He smells bad? Well, we don’t mention someone’s B.O. unless we can be tactful. Aiyana seems prejudiced from the start. Since a couple of people have rudely called me racist without knowing me, I automatically feel indignant. Naivety doesn’t equal racism. But complete denial and tribalism is linked to racist tendencies.

When two equally opposite forces meet, they cancel each other. Unless one of them is smart. Neither are. Magic gets thrown around like baseball bats, and ultimately Aiyana discovers that she doesn’t need anyone else to heal her, and she somehow performed a unique spell. Then her team called her “brilliant.” Since I already think of her as close-minded, acts-before-thinking, she is the perfect tool if the author is diabolical.

The story is short and entertaining. It feels like the prelude to a real story or a serial. It feels like a real improvement in Antara Mann’s writing style. Perhaps in the future there will be more character development, and I god-awful hope that Aiyana learns a little humility, social grace, and intelligence. Just sayin.

What a great start to an action and adventure. They need her help and the angels who help her want a scroll. Very well written storyline and a very good start to a new series. Cannot wait to see what happens.

This had too many pandemic references for me to want to read it right now. I kind of need an escape from COVID as opposed to a more on-the-nose fantasy about the turmoil afflicting US society on multiple levels now.

Antara Mann has knocked another one out of the park with this first book in her new series. Angels, nephilim, a pantheon of gods, secret councils, conspiracies, all interwoven with magic and secrets. What more could you want? It even has a hint of love with a very strong lead female character. This book is a must read.

This is book one of the Nephilim Legacy and the main character is a young woman called Aiya, who is working as a bartender in McManus’s Pub and Grill, a supernaturals only establishment. Matters are getting a bit dire, since a magical plague of sorts has hit all of human kind, turning some into ravaging savages and giving some small level of magic to others. Work has dried up everywhere and her previous job of searching for magical relics for a wealthy human, dried up when he died of cancer, with none of his expensive objects helping to cure his cancer. Aiya is part Navajo, from her grandmother’s side and most of her family, including her half-sister Dara are all hedge witches and her sister tries to bring some money in with an online site selling potions and spells. Aiya has to pretend and hide her true identity and magic, as her kind is one that is forbidden and were sought out for annihilation worldwide. Whilst she was at magical school, she had to keep a lid on her magic and be thought of as a weak mage. Her mother never speaks about her father, other than to let her know he was an angel, making her a Nephilim, warning her to always hide her magic and stay low.

When she gets obnoxious customers at the bar, who like to be a bit handsey when drunk, she uses her physical skills to put them in their place. That is until a very old vampire and stranger to town, tries to take her skimpy top as an invitation to get overfriendly and flirty with her and crosses the barrier of the bar, to accost her, that she unleashes part of her true magic, to push him away. She hoped that knocking him out would mean he wouldn’t remember her using her forbidden magic, but that soon gets put to the back of her mind, when she has another well-dressed and very handsome visitor comes calling at the bar. His name is Damian and she can’t work out what he is immediately, but he can sense her real magic, even though it is well hidden within her. He comes with a job offer for her, but won’t discuss the details there and then. When she finds him waiting for her hours later, after closing, she thinks he is a bit creepy!

She has had to hide her magic from the Magic Council and the Black and White Courts, who rule the different sides of magical beings. But as she is about to find out, there is another organisation, even above all of these, the Council of Nine and he is a member of this! They are offering her a huge sum of money, that would set her and her sister up for life, if she can recover a secret scroll, which the dark cult of Nephilim are using to cause this plague on humans, or at least that is what they all presume. If she can’t rescue this scroll, then matters will get worse for humans and all supernaturals next. As the angels have found out, only a Nephilim can kill a Nephilim! So she is their only hope of getting to this dangerous castle and locating the scroll and managing to get it back to the Council of Nine. She is accompanied by archangels Michael, Raphael, Enki and Loki, who help her get through many of the traps Lord Drago has set up to keep others away from his lair. Even the archangels were unable to use their full abilities in this area, as it was deeply spelled and warded. Hopefully, Aiya would be able to use her full Nephilim abilities once she came into contact with another and faced a severe enough danger that her magic came to her automatically.

She’s been told she is the only one who can put a stop to this evil masterplan that could destroy the world, but she has never allowed her true magic to come out or used anything but a tiny iota of it before, always afraid she would be discovered and reported to the Magical Council and put her sister, mother and even grandmother in danger for their lives. The four archangels are all very different and have varying skills that are put to use against the hellhounds, phantoms and other obstacles they come across on their journey. Aiya even gets on Loki’s back about him leaving the hellhounds to everyone else, until one of them explains how they used to work with him, before the dark ones took them. It is a near suicidal mission, one she is ill prepared for, but is also the only one that has a chance to stop this evil, and so she has to rely on her four archangels to help her all they can. She has a lot to live up to and she may finally get some answers about her father, which she has always sought. A fierce battle is coming and Aiya will face the dark of her kind for the first time. A cracking read, with a foe who promises to come back for revenge against her and her kind. I look forward to seeing what else she gets pulled into by the Council of Nine and whether her true status will ever be allowed to be known to all. I can’t wait to read what comes next! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I’m still technically reading/ deciding if I should continue, so I will give it a neutral 3 stars for now.
I’ve only currently read up to page 67 and the writing style is fine. However, contradictions and holes in the storyline have started to build up.

Some examples:

-she mentioned multiple times that she dressed up and did her make up sexily in order to get tips. This assumes that talking to your customers is part of the job, being a bartender and all, but once any guy takes notice of her low cut shirt, or flirts with her, its inappropriate? Is that not how she was planning to get more tips?

-she quickly trusts this guy who’s asking too many questions just because he’s offering her money. She’s reiterated many many many times about how she and her family would be dead if anyone finds out and that she would never risk her family. So why is it that a stranger who hints at you that he knows your secret- one who is evasive and requires her to travel somewhere secret with him, ALONE, even be an option for her? What happened to protecting your family first?
-she continues to go along with this guy to his secret location and then is surprised when they confront her about her magic and tries to play dumb.... what? Damien’s already basically told you to your face that he knows what you are.

-Nephilims as a race have been killed off by the magical council and what not. Then we get to page 67 on kindle and suddenly “only a Nephilim can kill another Nephilim.

I’m still trying to determine if I should push through since many other reviews have rated it well and I haven’t reached the halfway point yet, but it’s hard when I’m not really enjoying the book. If I were to stop here, I’d probably give it a 1.5 stars.

Interesting ideas and some unique elements that make for an entertaining story! Aiyana is the lead character; she’s a tough lady, and has some fun magical powers. In Aiyana’s world, there’s lots of supernaturals and supernatural issues going on. Aiyana’s a bartender that hides her magical powers because she’s a Nephilim, and Nephilim aren’t looked upon too fondly in the supernatural world. Aiyana tries to pass herself as a normal mage, but things don’t quite go as planned. She’s in for some dangerous adventures, and learning about lots of things she never knew about.

This book opens with a magical plague already in play; when the plague broke out it turned humans into very aggressive types, and it seems there’s more to the plague than its affect on humans. Things are looking dire for everyone! Aiyana is going to find herself more involved in resolving the plague than she could’ve ever thought. She ends up being offered a job of sorts from the mysterious Council of Nine; they want her to find the Scroll of Lies, this will put Aiyana on an interesting path. Lots of danger and intrigue! I’m interested to see where this series is going to go!

This novel is an interesting start to what promises to be an action-packed series. The world-building was interesting and is the main reason I kept reading as I wanted to know more. The characters are decent, but were a little flat for me. Although there were some random insta-attraction moments that seemed to be fuelled by magic, this novel has no romance, but there's a chance later novels in the series might have.

One thing I found rather dubious is that the female MC ends up in an otherwise all-male party to achieve the quest, which had reverse harem vibes and because there was absolutely no romance that felt weird. I kept wondering why there was only one female on the council of nine and why she didn't join the party for the quest. The gender disparity was weird for a modern book and kinda threw off the balance of the "girl power" feel of this novel.

That said, if you want a no-romance, action-packed urban fantasy with some interesting world-building, give this one a try.

Gods, witches, and angels

Aiya is nephilim, a race of fallen angels that are outlawed. They have been hunted to extinction or so thought. She hides her magic, pretending to be a hedge witch. Until a vamp shows up at her bar and tries to put the moves on her. Next thing she knows, some powerful beings are asking for her help and offering big bucks to get it. She accepts, going on a mission that not only reveals more about her kind but gives insight into her father as well.

Aiya is a touch chick. I like her spunk. This is def a chosen one trope but not in a bad way although she does seem to be attracted to quite a lot of people. I like her banter with Loki and her and Raphael's whatever it is they may have. Fun story!

Unfortunately, this one didn't really work for me. It's a 'chosen one quest' type story where everyone was attracted to the FMC and she was super powerful despite having to repress her abilities her entire life. I found her extremely brash unthinking actions decidedly annoying bordering on TSTL at times. That said, the concept was interesting and the magic system especially I found to be unique and intriguing. Sadly, I also felt that the story needed more refinement (while the magic system was very interesting, I did find the descriptions a bit limited).

Overall, I think this series (at least so far) would appeal more to youth / young adult readers.

Aiyana is a Nephilim. She has hidden her magic all her life to protect her family. Now a hot looking guy comes to her and reveals her secret. He demands her help to recover a stolen scroll of lies. Does she do it? Will she be able to protect her family? Who are these who want her to recover the scroll? Only you can find out by reading this excellent book. I am holding my breath anxiously waiting for the next book to read. More please.

Ariya is a magic wielder with a secret. She is a nephilim, too. This must be kept secret. As the world is reeling from a virus that is killing non shifters, she continues to work as a bartender supporting her sister. As more and more of her acquaintances acquire the virus, they have to leave. Circumstances arrive that inform her that her secret will save the world. What? How can that be? She has been raised to never acknowledge her secret. What will she do?
This is an awesome read and I highly recommend it to all interested in the paranormal.

Rough draft

This reads more like a rough draft than a finished novel. The language was stilted, the plot poorly put together, characterization was one dimensional. The premise was fine but it needed editing and several more drafts before being put out as a finished work. I don’t want to discourage the author but want to strongly encourage her to get a group of first readers and accept criticism and input on her writing. It could have been a good book. It just didn’t have enough time or work invested in it.

I normally don't enjoy Nephilim, Archangel, Angel-demon genre but since I love Antara Mann, I thought I'd give it a try and I'm extremely glad that I did. This is an extremely interesting and engaging story and one hell of a series starter.

Knowing Antara Mann's excellence in plot creation and imagery this book is very very vivid and thoroughly enjoyable. Waiting eagerly for the next book in the series.

I had started this book a while ago as I’m really curious about this author, and I finally today finished it. I found the beginning of the book a little info-heavy, and it took a little bit of time to get through it. However, once we got to the meat of the story, we really got to see the writing shine! The action was great, I loved all the side characters, and it is an interesting story. I want to find out more about Aiya’s past and family. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

A fast-paced plot with twists and turns and a rich and diverse world of magic and supernatural. The story is set in a modern-day California where magic and supernatural coexist with humans but hidden from their sight. The author creates a vivid and detailed world with different factions, cultures, and histories of the supernatural beings. The story also incorporates elements of mythology, folklore, and religion, adding depth and complexity to the world-building. This is still only book one of three, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Sins Of The Nephilim has everything I could ask for. From vampires and shapeshifters to Angel's and Gods. I love how it is based off what is going on in our world right now but with a magical and supernatural twist. The main character Aiyana is a strong and brave girl that has had to hide a part of herself for most of her life but it has been unleashed and it was everything I hoped it would be. Fighting hellhound with the guys and fighting the evil Drogo she did it and completed her mission. I absolutely loved this book.

Good

Ayia is Nephilim, one of a forbidden race of magical beings, who has spent her life hiding what she is. When a mysterious Angel recruits her for a dangerous mission, she realizes she will have to use all of her forbidden magic.

An entertaining trip into a world filled with magical beings, and a mysterious group of “bad guys” trying to take over the world.

Straight Forward

What I liked about this book is that the decisions of the protagonist did not automatically mean that her family was going to be dealing with the consequences . This is a very straight forward book. The author takes time to fill in the back story of why the society is the way it is. There were some things I did not like, but not enough to drop to three stars.

I enjoyed reading this book. The reading is easy flowing. An adventure with a little romance mixed in. The heroin knows of her powers, but she does not know the extent, as she has lived in fear of them all her life. But now she is needed to save the world. A spunky and tough character, I love her attitude.

Dara is a sweet sister. I like Leia. Aiya is supposed to what? Damian is very strange. Damian is part of what? Aiya is needed for that? The white parchment and quill was cute. Meeting everyone was a lot. I love the action. Aiyana has what? Her father did what? Drogo is scary. It's always good to put work away for one night. This was a good story.

A New Supernatural Twist

As the first book in a series, it took a bit to get into, but once the premise was clear, it moved on well. The given premise was solved with the ongoing threat of Drago to continue. The Council of Mine was interesting in its composition and how it interacted.

Aiyana Carter was just a girl working in a bar to make ends meet. Well, she wasn't just a girl, she was also part witch and part Nephilim. The Nephilim part was a secret as they were a race hated in the magical community and as far as anyone knew there were none left.
A plague has hit the world that is only affecting humans, but Aiyana finds out that the plague is just the beginning and that it is caused by the black Nephilim. She is hired by the Council of Nine to help stop the dark Nephilim because only another Nephilim could stop them.
As she heads into the heart of Drago's castle in search of the Scroll of Lies she must learn to accept what she is and tap into her powers.

Good story, could use work

I like the story and the protagonist, but I wonder if the author is aware of the racist overtones in several spots. I can overlook comma splices and the occasional run-on sentence, but by the end of the book I was very uncomfortable.
