This is Your Destiny by Aliza Kelly strives to link the science of astrology with manifestation so the reader can use the tools to cultivate their most abundant life. While I was very excited about this premise, I was disappointed with the delivery. There were no specifics that I could use to really connect my personal astrological signs to the various areas of life that the author covered.

The book begins with an autobiographical account where Aliza Kelly details her life experiences and how she used astrology to manifest the life she has today. The book itself focuses on a handful of different areas in life where one can use astrology and manifestation, including money, relationships, jobs, trauma, healing, and psychic abilities. Each chapter includes an anecdote about a particular person who was struggling in that particular area. The author gives that person's birth stats (but unless you happen to have the exact same birth chart, that is really of little use) and explains how they were able to overcome their obstacles. The chapters end with two manifestations, one for the astral (internal) plane and one for the physical (external) plane. These manifestations are the best part of the book, in my opinion. In all honesty, a reader could just skip through each chapter and only read these exercises and still get as much out of the book as they would have had they read every single word.
Perhaps my disappointment lies with misunderstanding what this book was offering, but I did not feel like I learned anything new about astrology or how I can implement it into my life. Most of the information I found valuable can be found in almost any article about intuition and manifestation. In fact, if you already practice manifesting on a regular basis, you might not find anything new here. Had there been more specifics that allowed me to apply astrological information to my own personal life, I would have rated this much higher.

*Thanks to the author, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Decided to read the book before doing any of the manifestations, so don't want to rate it yet. But glad I bought it! Lots of insightful ideas about how we interact with the physical and spiritual realm to create our own reality.

As an avid astrology student and Manifestation coach I really wanted to love this audiobook, and was really looking forward to two of my favourite topics fused together, but i just couldn't finish listening to it. I got to chapter two and found that its just a lot of filler and stories and antidotes, many of which i didn't find relevant. Also, the intro with all the covid talk also put me off and i found greatly unnecessary.

I had really high hopes for this book. One thing i realize this isn't the type of book you want to listen to. It would be better to have a physical copy so i could just skip over these parts and get to the meat of the subject. My time is too valuable to be wasted listening to the author talk, for what seemed like for the sake of talking.

Maybe if i had a physical copy instead, i'd feel differently. But with that said, maybe consider a different version for audio that makes it a bit friendlier to listen to. In my experience reference type books are better in paper so you can find what you need quickly. I can't imagine trying to find something i needed to reference in an audio version.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the ALC

it's ALL over the place. the writing is bad - unstructured, monotonous, crammed full of useless details that don't go anywhere. don't read this if you want to actually learn about astrology as a field. this is much more of a memoir of Kelly's astrological practice with semi-useless examples thrown in because they're delineated badly and do not make sense in the larger argument she makes in each chapter. beginner level guides must stay easy and brief, so having only chapters on each topic isn't a problem. it's that each chapter doesn't say anything of worth. this is about the author living their life and then writing about their life experiences in therapyspeak language, now to be sold to you with no evidence, fact-checking, etc. it's just anecdotes packaged as the life advice you need to solve everything. it's a book of blog posts.

my issue isn't with the memoir part either, by the way, but with how this book combines every imaginable New Age category to sell: manifestation, law of attraction, therapyspeak, vague palatable spells for everyone to enjoy with no clear training in witchcraft or a clear understanding of how it developed over time. there's been absolutely no research for any of it. when one client has financial anxiety, a sociological and psychological phenomenon, there's not even any lip service paid to any psychological research done in this field.

astrologers have been speaking about whether they should train to acquire counselling skills or not because as our systems collapse and mental health services become more necessary but unaffordable, they are being handed more responsibility ever before for clients' well-being. many astrologers are uncomfortable with this burden and want to refuse because this is a shit-show waiting to happen; others aren't thrilled but feel like they must expand their job description to keep up with the changing requirements because they can't just abandon people. the clients aren't just stressed; they also sometimes ask for advice on major life decisions, which many astrologers have limited life experience on. of course, many recommend therapists or other professionals, or astrologers who specialize in the field they need assistance in. but it's still an open debate that goes unacknowledged in this book as the author dispenses therapyspeak life advice to their clients.

I've been thinking astrology as more and more of a 3H practice, where an astrologer is deeply connected to their neighborhood/community because they organize, protest and work with them. they're not just an astrologer. they participate in mutual aid; they babysit in emergencies; they can help track a missing pet. limiting an astrologer's influence forces them to actually pay attention to their surroundings and to engage deeply with them. I've been thinking about how the job of a magical figure in many stories is to live on the margins because it liberates them to break the rules in ways others can't. they can act as guides and healers precisely because they're liminal. the witch can snort and tell the husband to pull his weight. the sage can scold. the hermit can bang their staff and silence everyone. an astrologer needs to know their community well enough to advise them, to understand their limitations by having experienced them khud. how can you advise someone when you have never lived alongside them? but where does accountability end and those receiving the advice learn to practice skepticism and autonomy? when do they learn to engage, instead of just cowering or sneering?

the best way an astrologer can help is to be so connected to a community that they can patch you through immediately. money troubles? they connect you to a mutual aid network. jobless? they help you find work by using their networks. an astrologer is the central node of a massive network, navigating it to create transfers within. the magical figure is the one who rallies a community and urges them to take a stand. but as astrologers move away from this form of practice, as they reject their limits to have access to a bigger market and more money (which is understandable because rent is so high that a neighborhood won't suffice), they style themselves more as self-help gurus. many become so overbooked or clients can't afford repeat bookings that the only way is to teach clients how to do everything - like chart-reading - themselves, instead of returning consistently for guidance, depth and development of initial concepts. the redefning of astrology creates niches like these: guides on 'attracting' everything from money to love modern astrology-style. for obvious reasons that investigative journalism into life-coaching is beginning to reveal, that is deeply unethical. but the book has no acknowledgements because the clients can usually afford those decisions.

as brutal as trad astro may be, I'm glad it acknowledges your environment and how it may remain unchanged, despite your best efforts. it's not as American Dream as modern astro.

I DNF-ed at 50% because so many respectable astrologers had talked about this book but I realize now it was the same marketing that academics do for each other, the same marketing tactic used when authors write reviews for each other to print on the covers. it doesn't mean they like or endorse the work. they just want to cross-pollinate and access each other's markets. I waited so long for the book to become useful but it was deliberately kept basic to appeal to the largest common denominator. if you want an exciting high-school brush with the woo-woo occult, go ahead; it reads like a Sex and the City-esque watering down, like Carrie's column trying to summarize the human condition. don't use this to seriously study or understand astrology.

tl;dr: really New Age manifestation guide using astrology-speak to sound convincing as it spins a 'if I can, so can you!' tale.

this isn’t an astrology book, really. not like “if you’re a leo, you’re like this.” it asks you to examine yourself, your values, difficulties you might have, and how that all relates to your chart. her argument is that you don’t use the things in your chart as an excuse, but rather as a roadmap for healing/self-actualization. i was genuinely surprised by this book. highly recommend- though not a book for astrology novices (though she does an excellent job explaining the terms)

This was a good book. I had to take it back to the library so I skimmed through the last part of it but the main thing I remember about this book is to think back on something that happened in your life and assign it a color. Once you do that when things happen in your life you will remember the color.

A fun self help book for astrology/manifestation/affirmation girlies. At its core is the way to self actualisation and also self love, with ways to get there through manifestation in the astral and physical world!
It’s a quick read with helpful ways to become your best self!

At the very least, the book deserves four stars. The author goes into lots of different topics for the reader to explore and gets onto a personal level.
Aliza is very open about her story and explains how she used astrology to help change her life. She acknowledges different scenarios and situations and how everyone is different with different purposes. The author also makes it relatable and shares about herself. There are a few pieces from the book that will stick with me, and I feel like as someone who is learning about these topics, this book has definitely taught me more. I’ve learned more about how astrology doesn’t have to always be in your daily life, or you can incorporate it into everything. Astrology and manifesting can be what you make it.
It’s hard to pinpoint what I dislike about the book. Lots of people said they don’t like that there were stories told about themselves or their own clients, but I personally thought it made it better. Sometimes the topics would be brought up multiple times and reappear in chapters, but some people might like it that way.

This Is Your Destiny by Aliza Kelly is not a badly written book, however it doesn't feel that it follows the title of the novel itself.

What I thought I was getting - a book on astrological signs and how they can use whatever tools to make their lives better or manifest things they desired in their life.

What I got - a non-specific book on astrology and stories from the author's own life.

I wanted to like this book and I as I said it wasn't bad writing, it didn't live up to what I thought I was going to be reading as I was reading it. I wanted more specifics based in astrology that would help me or that would guide me into the right places.

I am not going to say don't read it, but I am going to say go into reading this with the understanding that it won't be a in depth guide for astrology or items to specifically help you.

This book is fantastic, highly recommend. The amount of really amazing info the author shares is totally enlightening. She really shares a lot about herself & her journey to where she is now. i was amazed at the amount of knowledge she had when younger, which has to do with her intuition & being an empath. It's great to see how she did what her heart/gut told her to, even when the naysayers around her thought differently. Good for her for sticking to it. The ability to read charts isn't easy & there are ways she senses things when speaking w/ people that resonate with her. The way she spent so much time with people was excessive & draining, so it's good she figured out changes that needed to be made. She does astrology, not therapy; though listening is super important. I found this book to be so eye-opening, learned a lot, you will too.

This was so good! Not an astrology text book as some seem to be looking for. There are thousands of those out there. As a student of astrology I liked this because it shared real life examples of how astrology plays out and how it is always a push to growth. Aliza made me laugh but she also taught me a few things I hadn't considered about my own stuff and she also shared a lot of her own stuff in a very vulnerable and relatable way. She used a lot of examples that made sense to me about manifesting as well. In fairness, even before I finished reading her book I took a couple of her examples to heart and employed them and saw almost immediate results. TANC. If you like astrology, or understanding patterns in nature, the universe and life, then this is worth your time. Well done!

I only got to page 80 and tbh I couldn’t finish it. I thought this was a self help book not a biography about the authors incredibly boring life. She makes some good points and I agree with most of them but it was the delivery I had the problem with. If it wasn’t the excessive storytelling, the childlike puns and metaphors used in every other sentence would have gotten me to put it down.

Title is misleading in my opinion, it’s not a completely horrible book and again she does make good points about manifestation but there is hardly any educational information about astrology that is helpful to newer Astro students and it just seems more like a biographical novel than anything.

I won this book through Goodreads giveaways—thank you Aliza Kelly, the author, and St. Martin’s Press in exchange for my honest review.
This book has copious information and detail research for the contents of the book. I am not a person who uses astrology to gauge my daily beings and this book is fun to read and understand the manifestation of astrology to ones life. The book shows how the author researched and delivered the topic with grandeur. An interesting read! I give this book a 4⭐️

This book is absolutely wonderful!

It's mostly coaching, bringing in astrology for beginners and just a pinch of manifestation.
It is truly the perfect down to earth manifestation book, with so much real talk and no .. delulu really.

If this wasn't enough, what it makes it shine is the compassionate and caring tone that makes everyone welcomed and understood.

Loved this and can't recommend it enough.

Super uplifting! I love how Aliza took the lessons from her life and shared how she used astrology combined with intuition to heal from her very challenging childhood to become a strong support for others as an astrologer and healer. I gained a new perspective on how to read astrological charts and reflect on how I could transform life challenges into strengths. This was one of the best astrology books I've read.

A good introduction to manifesting with astrology and how to read birth charts. I might buy my own copy to re-read to revisit some of the concepts. This helped me reflect not only on my reality and life but the relationships I have and how to best keep them healthy and viable. A great book to self reflect and open your mind to all the possibilities of astrology! Will be purchasing for future reference!

Received from the publisher, St Martin's Press, from a goodreads giveaway. "Using Astrology To Manifest Your Best Life". This book is not for the novice reader of the zodiac or astrology. Goes into birth charts and manifestations of different aspects in your chart. Has individual "lessons" to understand your self and become a better person.

If you love astrology and maybe aren’t too fond of “self-help,” this is the book for you. I’ve always been discouraged by the idea of self help but Aliza has written this book in such a way that it is like talking to a friend versus being talked at by a stranger. I look forward to completing the various journaling activities and referencing this read throughout the year ❤️

This book wasn’t bad. I enjoyed the anecdotes (which the beginning of the book is mainly comprised of), but certain parts felt like unnecessary filler that aims to be relatable, but misses the mark a bit. I was hoping for more specifics to each sign, but I didn’t mind the broad astrological and manifestation principles discussed. I don’t think I would recommend this book to other people though.

An interesting book with exercises that focus both on the internal and external.Had this book for a while and finally finished it but the exercises pop into my head once in a while. Some of the stuff is not new to me but may be useful to those who are beginners manifesting wise but astrology wise I'm not sure if I got as much use out of it. Still a fantastic book and worth a read.

I love Aliza Kelly so I was excited to read this book. I was however disappointed with its vagueness in terms of astrology. The bulk of this book is exercises, which for me are impractical considering I read in public places as well as in bed at night with my partner who is sleeping.

As someone who already uses the language of astrology, I found this book insightful and will definitely be one I come back to over and over. I appreciate Aliza's style and the depth of her study in a time when astrology is getting chopped and sold in 6 second videos 😅

Surprisingly, even though it’s supposed about astrology (and it is), the manifestation techniques and considerations lean heavily on modern psychology and feel more like a life philosophy.
Fun and lighthearted, but serious too.

Not really going over astrology or related topics but has chosen a few areas of life and has used real life experiences. But you do get some astrological input. Good if wanting life examples.
