Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

Back to bloody basics great book containing Conan the Barbarian issues 1 - 6 2019. Conan is back with Marvel (now Disney), but the great work done in Dark Horse comics is well and truly on display.

This is Conan how he is supposed to be. Going from adventure to adventure, battle to battle, fighting to the death. Yet even he cannot out run his own demise forever a death was promised and it intends to collect no matter how many years later.

See Conan in various stages of his life fighting, not just surviving but thriving. Called many names but never civilised (atleast not twice) or tamed.

A great collection of stories from birth to death, with many adventures from between. A must have for any Conan fan. Cover gallery of all the covers including variant covers either displayed on full page or 4 on a page picture. Great artwork, great story and as I expect from Conan action at its bloody best.

Let’s get the disclosure stuff out of the way first: I am a fan of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Cimmerian. I have what I believe is a complete collection of the Howard, Carter, Sprague de Camp stories complete with the Frazetta artwork. I am also one of those who followed Conan to Marvel for iterations by Roy Thomas and others. Disney has now put Conan back in its Marvel Group courtesy of Dark Horse.

You do not need to know anything about Conan. Knowing something about the sword and sorcery genre might prove helpful. Jason Aaron is well-versed in both and this new approach to the Conan saga is valid and works well. This is the first collection in a series that reprises the arc of Conan’s “career” from his first battles to his rise to kingship in Aquilonia. It is knit together with a cursed prediction of his death. We learn that an early encounter with a witch leads to a lifelong attempt on her part to kill Conan and use his blood to revive the catatonic god she serves.

Excellent art and a careful storyline make this one of the better revivals of this saga. It raises the bar on many Conan efforts and gives hope that it will end as good as its beginning. 4.5*

Jason Aaron built his career out of writing comics about somber angry men waging war and destruction, so Conan was pretty much a perfect fit for him. This book feels like the middle ground between Aaron’s Thor (especially the early years, like God of Thunder) and The Goddamned. It’s a very solid and enjoyable read, and Aaron’s format of one-shot stories loosely connected by a few pages in the back of each issue seems to work better for him recently than writing one big story arc. Still, I couldn’t help but wish for something bigger — as a Jason Aaron fan who’ve read a lot of his previous works, these stories felt a bit too familiar and safe. Maybe this series will build towards some bigger, more daring storyline in the future, but for now it’s just another Jason Aaron book about a somber angry man waging war and destruction. Сould be worse, right? Plus the art is really nice. So yeah, definitely a worthwhile book, just temper your expectations if you're waiting for yet another Jason Aaron masterpiece.

I was expecting a full story instead of a collection of short stories, but all six of them were so damn good, five stars.

Conan the Barbarian returns to Marvel for the first time since the 1970's. Jason Aaron dishes out 6 solo issues of blood and dismemberment across Conan's life connected by an overarching story. Aaron's story does continue into volume two, so don't expect any resolutions with the Crimson Witch yet.

Mahmud Asrar's detailed art is a good match. Gerardo Zaffino's scratchy, muddled art feels abrasive and out of place in the midst of this.

Great graphics and a compelling storyline that follows Conan through several stages of his life, from a young barbarian first setting out from Cimmeria to a seasoned warrior and king and beyond. Aaron does an excellent job mixing in bits and pieces of Conan canon to anchor the story in something that feels authentic.

Does Aaron's contract with Marvel require him to set all his titles in at least two timelines? Following on his Thor of the past, present and end of time and his Avengers of the present day and One Million B.C., we are given tales of a young barbarian Conan beginning his adventures framed by sequences of King Conan facing what may be his final battle.

Most of the chapters contain stand-alone tales of Conan doing his Conan thing. They are perfectly fine if all you want is some simple sword and sorcery action with pirates. witches, monsters, etc. There are even some allusions to Batman-style vigilantes, guerrilla warfare à la Vietnam or Afghanistan, and Conan going full Costner in a Dances with Wolves homage. But it's all filler for the dull and too slowly unfolding overarching story.

For my first Conan read this was pretty solid.

This is just a bunch of solo stories. They all kind of connect, well in the sense they revolve around Conan. The first issue sets kind of the blueprint of how they will go but also giving the backstory of most of the stories in here. Conan is tricked by a witch and is on the way to being killed. That's how the first issue starts and the next 5 issues kind of go over different events in Conan's life to come to this point.

The thing is, the stories are all solid. Some are better than others. The first issue was actually the weakest for me but the stories of Conan among a new tribe of people, facing off against snakes, and also stories of nearly being hung and stuff all worked well. This is typical war stories with a angry man who wants to just survive. The art is solid enough, brutal when needed, but not overly done, which is nice.

While nothing mind-blowing, it's all pretty good, and I'll check out volume 2. A 3 out of 5.

Conan is back at Marvel and it seems that they haven't held back on the violence and gore. Conan slashes his way through a variety of enemies in a series of short stories that take place in different parts of the world at different times in his life. There is a overarching narrative that ties these stories together, but other than the first story, it is only touched on in a few panels per story, so it feels like these stories are only loosely connected. The art is nice, but Conan himself is not that interesting of a character here. He doesn't seem to have much personality or agency. Just bad stuff happens to him and he survives. There's no sense that there is anything he desires or strives for.

A pretty good collection of stories to start this new Conan series. I wasn't blown out of my chair by anything here, but I also didn't majorly dislike anything either (although Conan putting on a costume and becoming a batman-like vigilante in one of the stories was stupid. "But Conan didn't want anyone to know it was him!". Nah, Conan wouldn't give a shit).

Let's just hope that both Marvel and Aaron keep politics out of this series and stick to telling good, pulpy, sword & sorcery tales. I mean, honestly, if there is any character in the world that doesn't need to be injected with PC tripe it's Conan the freaking barbarian (I'm looking at you Wonder Woman/Conan teamup).

By Crom, what a fantastic read! Conan is a mirthless, invincible killing machine and I am here for it! Picture Wolverine or Hellboy, but high fantasy. Each issue in this volume is a single tale from Conan's life, a scrumptious bite of battle, both of the wits and of the sword. Each issue is also carefully tied into a larger story: the death of Conan. Hence, the title, I suppose. Jason Aaron writes the pants off this thing, brilliantly toying with numerous high fantasy tropes. The Life and Death of Conan is stuff you've probably seen before, but never packaged like this.

The details are really what makes Conan the Barbarian sing. Take, for example, the fact that each issue begins with a map of Hyboria, a portion highlighted to show where the following story will take place. Listen: I'm an avowed lover of fantasy maps, so this was an easy win for me. But Aaron's dedication to using the map, calling out different locations, and sending Conan all over the world - I dare say only Game of Thrones has been so satisfying.

And hey, if you're not a huge map nerd, there's also at least one full-page image of a bloody, half-naked Conan sitting on the bodies of his slain enemies like they were a throne. So, you know: something for everyone here. Conan the Barbarian is easily the most surprisingly amazing read of the past year for me. Don't hesitate to give this a look.

Although the character has been around since his 1932 debut in the pages of pulp magazine Weird Tales, most people will be familiar of Conan the Barbarian as played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in John Milius' 1982 adaptation, a deeply weird film that is at times both brilliant and problematic. Obviously, Robert E. Howard's creation has made its way into multiple media, including comics that were originally published by Marvel in the early 1970s until in 2003, Dark Horse acquired the license to publish the character. Last year, Marvel reacquired the rights and started new runs featuring the Cimmerian.

We have had over eighty years of Conan from the original author to the many other storytellers who have put their own spin on the character, and for something that is subtitled "The Life and Death and Conan", it's pretty ambitious. However, having written the likes of Thor and his creator-owned comic The Goddamned, Jason Aaron is born to write Conan the Barbarian. Born on the grim battlefields in Cimmeria to later in life, becoming king of Aquilonia, a lot has happened in Conan's life as explored in these six issues, whilst at the same time building up to his supposed death.

Despite being a continuing story of a witch determined to spill Conan's blood to awaken her dark lord Razazel, each issue feels like its own episode where Conan goes from one adventure to the next. Each of these stories is classic sword-and-sorcery antics for the barbarian, where he can go from defending a village who hates him despite the greater threat of giant snakes, to being a one-man crew of a ship battling pirates and monsters. Aaron is no stranger to writing angry men who slashes his way through any threat that opposes him and although some may read this as being all-too familiar to the writer, it is still entertaining as hell, Crom damn it.

As the primary artist of Conan the Barbarian, Mahmud Asrar has a literally bloody good time in illustrating the various locations of the Hyborian Age, where Conan – no matter how old he is – has to cleave his way to survive, leading to gloriously gory action sequences. As impressive as Asrar's art is, Gerardo Zaffino steals the show in issue #4 with his grittier style that does not shy away from the gore, but is telling an intimate story of a king who frustrated with tax problems and is in need of adventure, with the company of a lion.

This issue alone showcases why Conan remains a compelling figure who can more than just a topless muscled man who can hack-and-slash. Aaron's Conan is a perfect gateway for new readers wanting to read some sword-and-sorcery comics as this first volume honours the history of the Cimmerian, whilst taking him into new directions.

3,5* - uvidíme, co s tím vyvede druhá půlka a zakončení příběhu

This is a collection of six short stories with a tiny little thread in them that connects them all together. Sadly, that tiny little thread of a story isn't resolved in this volume and, I suppose, it will carry on into the next one. I was kind of disappointed with that.

It's still Conan though - so I definitely enjoyed it. I think, so far anyway, that I like the new Savage Sword of Conan more. Having one cohesive story spread out through an entire volume, for me, was more entertaining than the short story collection that Barbarian gave me.

That said - the 6 short stories that we are given in Barbarian are pretty right-on. I definitely enjoyed them and will most certainly be carrying on with the series.

(I'd like to give this 3.5 stars if I could)

Jason Aaron excels when writing about badasses. And Conan is pretty much the ultimate badass. Maybe my expectations were too high for that reason, but I found this to be just good, not great.

It’s nowhere close to Aaron’s Thor run, Southern Bastards or Scalped, but it’s certainly fun sword & sorcery, without much meat on its bones.

It’s basically just a series of short stories of Conan overcoming insurmountable odds. So, it’s Conan.

And the one through line this volume has is a story about a blood witch that gets a few panels here and there. It’s the most interesting aspect of this collection, but it ends in a cliffhanger...

This was 6 separate stories at different times in Conans life which all lead to the same conclusion, later in life, finding himself tied down about to be sacrificed. The first 3 tails were just ok, not the best. The last 3 stories is were the book got a little better.

Different stories of Conan delaying the main plot supposed to lead to his ultimate demise. Good enough for Conan fans; the character is true to form. Well written, Aaron's way with hints of humor here and there. The narration is a bit verbose, though, not Aaron's usual touch. Overall good but certainly not mind blowing.

On the other hand MahmudAsrar and Matthew Wilson shine throughout the book. Asrar draws an impressive Conan, a true survivor whatever the cost, not shying from bloody action. These two will make me follow the series.

Not bad, not bad, not bad at all. Conan from birth to death...and I'm hoping against hope somehow somehow that he doesn't die, but, these authors are all about shock value these days, so, yeah, Conan gone and done, sorry. 😂
Good stuff. The Dark Knight story was awesome.

I liked how each story peeps back to the present.

Much like with "Savage Sword of...", this is exactly what you'd think it would be. Very reminiscent of the Conan movies. The art is much better and Jason Aaron's writing is always fantastic.
I'd read this title over Savage Sword, but it is still a violent barbarian book.
Recommend.

Just finished this one. I'm back in the mix! Last year I missed my reading goal by a lot due to how crappy a year it was. Got to get back on track!
This is the newest foray into the Conan stories by yet again, Marvel.....Finally! This is a beautifully drawn and written piece, volume one of two as far as I know. This details the fall of Conan as King and why indeed he fell and if you read the story, his ultimate demise is laid out in these pages before us.
Several tales unfold here, taking the reader across the Hyborian trails of Conan. Turan, Nemedia, Aquilonia, The Pictlands beyond the Black River, all are here to be delved into. Cover art is great and the the art is wonderful, save for one of the middle stories, but it was a valiant attempt and the flow was stalled, but not killed.
Wine, wenching and warfare. These are not and never will again be mainstream books like back in the day. There is too much social commentary and not enough room for good old pulp action and adventure. In these pages we get that again. Is this for everyone? Not at all. It carries me back to when I was 10 years old and read the Conan novels for the first time. A better time indeed and maybe, I hope a return to this form is on the wing. I look forward to volume 2 of this graphic novel!

This is Conan being Conan. I liked it. It definitely emphasizes the gore soaks slash-fest aspect of Conan, but that is one of his more winning qualities.

I was sorry that this was grim Conan and not fun Conan. He is supposed to be a fun guy, at least as fun as a hardened killer with a lifetime of PTSD can be. He isn't the Punisher. He does not go through life driven by revenge, even if the occasional feckless monarch or nefarious sorcerer can drive him to fits of vengeance. Conan likes a joke. Robert E. Howard describes him as a man of "titanic mirth." He also likes the ladies. He wanders the world because he loves life, not because he's a homicidal maniac (though the frequent killing probably does cause him to wear out his welcome faster than most).

This was fine, but not all that Conan can or should be.

This book was quite fun. Picking up in random events of Conan life when he was a cimmerian who was born in the battlefield to the far future when he became the King of Aquilonia. Then focusing his adventures like in a battle in zamora, fighting with the picts against the ghost snakes near Black river, traversing the southern seas alone (Conan the Pirate), or near the Red Tree Hill or fighting alongside the Turans. This book shows all the savagery, blood, women and drinks that Conan is known for and shows Conan adventures at different points of life meanwhile tying it all together with Red doom and the children of the Crimson Witch.

"A man who can't believe the unbelievable hasn't seen much of the world."

Having next to no previous experience with the Conan character, it was my eternal adoration for all things Jason Aaron that lured me to this comic like a siren to the rocks. Though, sticking with the "siren" theme, Aaron's polished, poetically-framed pseudo-anthology created an ocean of lore I'd be happy to drown in.

Although Jason Aaron's stories meander like a Turanian marauder, the spirit of Conan is solidly intact with self-contained adventures reminiscent of Robert E. Howard’s non-linear approach. And the art is excellent as well. I was a huge fan of the Dark Horse run (especially Busiek and Truman) and I feel like the folks at Marvel took good notes. Can’t wait to read what’s coming up, and The Savage Sword as well.
