It’s time for the ho-ho-holidays and while this is one of my favorite times of the year, I’m feeling a little off. My mom has gone on a well-deserved cruise and I’m alone, starting a new position to be the assistant of famed researcher Dr. Nathan Amherst.
The department secretary says he’s terrible and they have to hire new assistants all the time which is why I’m starting at the end of the term. She’s all but begging me to overlook his bad habits and nasty temper.
I could’ve endured those things, but I wasn’t prepared to for him to be the science version of John Wick. He’s so gorgeous and so smart and I’m so attracted to him that I’m worried I won’t be able to keep my hands off of him.
I need this job but it’s already in jeopardy—and so am I!
Fast pace some steamy moments and alot of shall we shall we not.
Nathan is a scientist and he is antisocial and a grumpy everyone hates working with him because he's a jerk. Now hes getting a new assistant and he doeant want it. Until he meets Kayla she's everything he wants and needs but doesn't wanna ruin their work relationship or have her transfer because someone else would be around her. Nathan was mixed for me.. he acted like an alpha one seconds and then pulled back. As for Kayla she was okay she enjoyed being around Nathan even if he wasn't what the rumors said.
Her problem was a ex student who kept wanting Nathan.. as for Nathan he was blind to the ow flirtyness. He only wanted Kayla.. wish he was more jerkish to the ow.
No om drama slight ow drama (an ex student), no cheating, slight drama, Sexy times, both virgins

I never thought an extremely smart (im not sure, whether he was a biochemist or something) research prof could be smutty dirty hot. He was alpha in every sense but with social awkwardness and clueless on social cues. The whole plot was as per usual Ella style; alpha H met sweet innocent h and everything happened in a zing.
Dual virgin OTT instalove No condoms Safe read No cheating, no exes HEA, epilogues Overall score: 4 gooey tingly romance stars
HERO - Dr. Nathan Amherst. Scientist and professor. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular with longish black hair. Kayla likens him to a younger John Wick (Keanu Reeves) in appearance. Wears glasses (though it’s only mentioned once, so maybe not).
HEROINE - Kayla . Biotechnology graduate student. Height-wise, about a foot shorter than Nathan. Has some curves. Golden-skinned with long dark hair and light gold eyes with green flecks.
OVERALL THOUGHTS - I enjoyed it, but I wanted to like it more than I did. I found my attention wandering multiple times and it wasn’t as festive as I would like out a holiday read. Ultimately, while I did get a few laughs, it was a so-so read.
What I Liked
The humor. I laughed quite a few times and found Nathan to be quite quotable.
Nathan. He was the primary source of humor in this story. He’s logical to a fault, has a brilliant mind, and became obsessed with Kayla on sight. He’s definitely got some of the best lines in the book.
What I Disliked
Lack of details. We’re never told their ages. Kayla’s a grad student, but never talks about school. I was confused about Nathan’s status as a professor. He talks about teaching in the past, but was he not teaching in the current semester? It’s not mentioned, I don't think. I have quite a few questions I was left with, but you get the idea.
Disconnect. I found it hard to connect to either main character, even Nathan. Thanks to a lack of details and very little background information, they came across as very surface level. I don’t mind it too much with Nathan because not emoting is part of his character (logical to a fault, remember), but I felt weirdly detached from Kayla, too, even with the sad backstory about her father. Maybe because that story felt unnatural as well. It was meant to give Kayla a reason to feel sad around the holidays, but it’s not really delved into or focused on so it ultimately felt unneeded.
Lack of chemistry. Probably a result of the disconnect I felt with the characters (Kayla mostly), but I didn’t really feel the chemistry between her and Nathan. I could see the potential, for sure, but I didn’t find their intimate moments very steamy.
Dropped plot threads. So we’re not going to get any fallout from Nathan being threatened with or him . Did anything happen with those two things?
Christmas vibes. I don’t think the holiday gets mentioned until about a third of the way in. From there, I can’t say this book gave me strong holly jollies. LOL
Neutral But Noteworthy
Kayla. I didn’t dislike her, but I couldn’t fully picture her either. It didn’t help that there was no physical description of her until a third of the way in.
A cute Christmas novella with a clueless couple who go gaga for each other on first sight. They both are jealous/possessive/protective with each other. 4 stars
Recomendado 😁
I loved Nathan’s character in this story. His grumpy, anti-social attitude didn’t change when he met Kayla, just transformed into possessiveness and love for her. Great Christmas story.
All was great until the quote where he said he'll make an obedient wife of her, so she doesn't have to think for herself... Well, I might not be a full on feminist but this quote was plainly fucked up. And offensive. Cut it out and we'll have a nice read.
This was so good! Nathan and his mouth made me laugh out loud. The grumpy Dr finally meets his match in Kayla. Kayla has some self image issues to overcome. There’s a little bit of angst, but it doesn’t last long. Super sweet part about the Christmas tree topper.
Dr Nathan Amherst has a terrible reputation around campus, he is notoriously difficult to work with, he is antisocial and just an all around grump. He feels the teaching part of his job is a curse, all he wants to do is his research and help humanity. Kayla is going to be his new graduate assistant, one he does not want or feels he needs. But he changes his tune as soon as he sees her. He has never indulged in the pursuit of a woman or showed any interest in one until now. He is captivated by her, he is drawn to her in a way he can’t explain and that messes with his head. He finds himself doing things he does not ordinarily do around women and he is always aroused whenever she is near or he thinks of her. Kayla does not see the effect she has on him, she is attracted to him but tries to keep things professional as possible, especially for her, because she loves to think out loud and she hopes it does not bother him. It doesn’t he loves the sound of her voice and could listen to her all day. While trying to leave one night they get stuck in the elevator and share a steamy kiss. The department secretary has told him what he can and can not say or do to the assistant, he knows the kiss was a big no, but doesn’t care. Nathan tries to remember all the do not’s but finds it hard to remember them with Kayla, he just wants her. To try to spend some time with her he tells her he needs her to accompany him to his remote cabin to get it ready for his stay during the holiday break. She agrees to help him and they spend the night there. Their first time is funny and hot, dual virgins. They head back to town to attend the department holiday party, drama happens with a former student who wants Nathan and Jack a co-worker who hits on Kayla again. They confess their love and head back to the cabin. Nathan proposes and Kayla accepts after making sure its not to save her job, but because he loves her. Epilogue one year later them married, back at the cabin and expecting a baby.

Plot: So one dedicated, slightly (!) judgmental, cranky scientist + one sweet, beautiful, smart intern = love? This time it does!
Nathan is a hot nerd who is such a scientific genius that the university puts up with his foul moods and less-than-amenable disposition.
Kayla is his new intern, and the rest of the office isn't sure she'll last - his interns never do. But she has a case of hero worship for the John Wick lookalike and will put up with just about anything.
She doesn't have to though, because Nathan falls in love at first sight. He changes his attitude immediately - but only for Kayla. He decides that it would be the end of the world if she were hungry, so he feeds her - constantly. He goes to office parties for her, even though he hates them. He is, in a word, smitten.
Of course, there is some external conflict, but I won't spoil that for you.
Commentary: Nathan is the one with the most development throughout the story. He has to think about his attitude and demeanor towards others if he wants to be with Kayla. That doesn't mean that he always changes his thinking, but he definitely changes his actions.
All in all, it was a cute book with a type of hero that we don't often see. This was a sweet Christmas entry in the insta-love category, and as with all Ella Goode books, I definitely recommend it.
I'm usually let down by books this short because they're almost always all sex and no plot. But not this one. This had an actual story! I'm so impressed by this author and so in love with this book just for that reason. Is it the greatest thing I've ever read? No. The nonstop push/pull was done so poorly it was ridiculous. I couldn't figure out the reason for the back and forth because they changed their minds so quickly and so often. And the OW drama was absolutely pointless and completely forced. But I don't care. I'm not taking anything away because of it. Nope, this is a 4 star story based on the fact that IT HAS A PLOT. It's not just a nonstop sex scene; it's an actual story!! That is so refreshing.
Thank you Ella Goode. My expectations for these short romances has been painfully low for a while now because it's the same thing every time (sex sex sex and no storyline). But you wrote something with substance. THANK YOU!! I know I keep repeating myself, but I'm so happy right now, I can't help it. Lol.
The idea here isn't new, but I still love it. H is a highly intelligent, anti-social, grump. His h is a sweety-pie who miraculously gains his insta-love attention. There's an OW who tries him, but he's oblivious. After an issue or two, the couple finds their HEA. Worth reading. Rec!
If you want to read something similar to The Love Hypothesis, but shorter and more steamy… then this book is for you! Ella Goode doesn’t miss with the super possessive heroes who fall hard and fast for the heroine. It’s very well written: I noticed no editing mistakes. The tropes are grump-and-sunshine and office-romance, with both main characters being super smart. The hero is a professor and renowned scientist, and the heroine is his student assistant. Absolutely loved this! Hopefully you will too.
Safety spoilers: Dual virgins! OW Drama: a girl who makes advances on the hero, to which he is oblivious. OM Drama: a man who lies and makes the heroine think badly of the hero, and offers her a good time. Obviously, she doesn’t pay any attention to him. Completely safe.
Definitely one of my favorite holiday themed stories. Nathan is so nerdy and oblivious to what other people are thinking and he could really care less... until in walks his new assistant Kayla. Kayla is a nerd herself. She loves to ramble and eat. Good thing Dr. Amherst loves the sound of her voice and loves to feed her.
I love a good over the top clueless alpha male! This man is brainy and sexy, but he’s never had the feelings. He doesn’t know what to do with them. He just knows he wants her. Sweet romance story!!!
No strong representations of diverse characters or minority figures.
Overall: 3/5 stars
Christmas Chemistry was a cute and steamy romance with an OTT alpha hero and insta-lust meet-cute.
However, I really didn't appreciate that the OW accused the Hero of sexual assault because he rejected her. That feeds into the stereotype that women falsely accuse men in power for fame and that false accusations are common (they represent less than 10% of sexual harassment reports–and that statistic is commonly inflated with unfounded reports... meaning there isn't enough evidence to leave the case open, rather than it being a false report).
Safety Rating: Safe • No cheating – Both MCs are virgins • Does have OM drama (kind of) – Colleague of the Hero and Heroine hits on the Heroine and doesn't take no for an answer • Does have OW drama (kind of) – Old student of the Hero hits on him and doesn't take no for an answer • Does have the Hero pushing the Heroine away • No separation
Possible Triggers: • Sexual harassment and attempted assault • OW accusing Hero of sexual assault in revenge for him rejecting her • Death of a parent
“ As long as it makes Kayla feel better, I could write papers about how the sky is green and the grass is blue.”
“There isn’t a word you’ve said to me that I’ve missed. If I looked spaced, I was more than likely thinking over the things you said.”
“What is your plan?” “To trap you in my cabin and make you fall in love with me.”
5 SPARKLY STARS FOR THIS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
DR NATHAN AMHERST HELLO 🤌🏻✨😮💨
A brooding grumpy hella sexy nerdy scientist who has nothing in his mind but SCIENCE. Really, just his research stuff, nothing else.
He cares for nothing at all until his new assistant, Kayla walks into his office 🤩
BUT HE IS DROP DEAD ASSERTIVE ALPHA WITH A TINGE OF SOCIAL AWKWARDNESS
HOW CAN A MAN BE SO GRUMPY AND NERDY AND AWKWARD BUT THEN POSSESSIVE AND ALL ALPHA WHEN IT COMES TO THE WOMAN HE LOVES 😩
But sweet as hell please 😭
•He hates christmas but said he likes it when Kayla says she loves it • buys her dozens of doughnuts and asked the cashier whats her fav to go coffee • all soft and gentle when Kayla has a panic attack ( the elevator scene 🤌🏻✨) • hates social events but went to one bc of Kayla • demands for the corner piece of the cake just bc Kayla loves the cream frosting 😭 ( HE TOOK TWO FOR HER??) • likes peace and quiet but doesnt mind Kayla’s ramblings 🥲
This is such a quick sweet love at first sight stem romance and I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS BOOK BY ACCIDENT
Have you ever found someone who talks about science all day long and find it interesting? Well honestly...I have not, but you will find Nathan who has trouble communicating with the human race. Nathan is known as grouchy, bark orders to everyone who surrounds him, and very demanding. Nathan is a top scientist and only communicates well with the numbers in his head. He does not know how to deal with emotions, but that all changes when he meets Kayla who is the new intern at his office, and he starts to want to talk to Kayla, feed her, and be a good man to her. The change in Nathan was so sweet to watch and swoon worthy!
Kayla is the new intern to Nathan. She is a young woman who finds Nathan to be rough around the edges with his foul moods, but she finds it hot! Not to mention...Nathan reminds her of John Wick. She also finds Nathan likes to go out of his way, to make sure she is taken care of. This has Kayla falling for her boss fast!
Kayla and Nathan are the perfect couple to fall in love. Christmas Chemistry is the perfect holiday read and so much more!
This is the kind of trope that I find hilarious and catchy. The antisocial, scientifically oriented professor who gets an unwanted assistant and falls hopelessly in love with her. He has no clue as to how to seduce her without incurring in harassment.
The inner dialogues of this man are so funny! And she is adorable, curvy, very tempted by the hot and bossy man, and ready to go against all the university rules as long as they can have a Christmas season full of love and bedroom discoveries.
For a novella, I think there's plenty of scenes where the characters talk, know each other, melt my heart, make me laugh, and show their work environment where they interact with other co-workers with hilarious results, too. I really loved how they behave towards each other, trying to appear unobsessed but failing miserably.
Office gossip, isolated cabins, a couple destined to love, and much Christmas joy. This is a sweet, funny and naughty treat that I thoroughly enjoyed. Perfect formula.
What I realized tonight was I need to read other reviews before I start a novel.
This one started with promise,a smart, handsome researcher who has a difficult time keeping assistances. A competent secretary who warns him not to fire another assistant.
A young, eager, very smart assistant enters, and instantly the good doctor falls for her, for a few brief chapters, a rom-com occurs, he trying not to do anything to ruin or break any rules. It makes you think though briefly, this has the makings of enjoyable journey of 2 book smart people figuring out their love but (spoiler alert) it quickly becomes a sexy, hot mess. I don’t personally enjoy the whole male dominance thing, thoughts of locking someone up until they they are submissive and are theirs. If you enjoy that this will be great a read, I found it sad. Two smart people could have been developed into a wonderful story line that might have matched the ending. Unfortunately for me it left me not wanting more...literally!
Ella and her romances hold a special place in my heart. Light, flirty, possessive, sexy. But this holiday romance had a layer of humor that stole the show. Dr. Nathan Amherst cracked me up on every page with how obsessed he was of Kayla. I connected with him deeply because of his intelligence and astute way of thinking.
Kayla was adorable. She went with the flow and just accepted what happened as it happened. She was innocent but genuine and it’s so refreshing to read a FMC like that.
Super quick, festive, sexy little read, y’all. If you’ve never read Ella Goode before, now may be the perfect time to dive into her instalove stories. They’re perfect resets or “easy” romances.
This H was one of my favorite type of bookboyfriend heroes. The obsessed at first sight but slightly confused at first because he doesn't normally get possessive over anyone. Nathan is a brilliant research college professor who does not have a normal sense of humor, does not interact with other people very well, prefers to work alone and to work all the time on his research projects. His new cute bubbly petite yet curvy TA captures his attention from the first moment she walks into his office to work as his Teacher's Assistant. The H's inner-dialogue is HILARIOUS and his actions are sweet yet caveman'ish. (Sighhhhh) And of course Ella Goode always leaves us readers with a HEA ending! Fast, hot and sweet - just what I needed! Oh and with just a touch of Christmas and a tiny moment of angst just to make things interesting but not puss you off.😉
