A shunned lady determined to keep her secrets. A newly minted earl looking for a fresh start. A love gone wrong gains a second chance.
A shunned lady determined to keep her secrets. Lady Leventon had been shunned to the Scottish wilds of Badenoch for a reason. But she never thought it would be the death of her. That is until her maid and only friend in the world falls deathly ill just days before Christmastide and Karta is determined to make it through a snowstorm for help. She didn’t think it would cost her her life, but as her feet slow in the heavy snow, hope gives out.
A newly minted earl looking for a fresh start. When Domnall Greyford, Earl of Kirkmere, discovers the woman that left him years ago frozen in a snowbank, barely breathing, he does the only thing he can—he carries her to his new home. Never mind that she shattered his heart long ago when she left him without a word, without a note, without a thought. And the last thing he wants is her in his new home, in his new life.
A love gone wrong gains a second chance. Karta awakens to find the last man in the world she expected holding onto her frozen bare toes—Domnall. The only man she’d ever dared to love. The same man that had abandoned her years ago. Yet the all-consuming heat between them is unmistakable.
She knows full well she needs to deny him, deny the insistent rumbles of lost love fighting for life. For if she doesn’t, he’ll discover the truth of her past and his scorn would be irrevocable. That will not do—she isn’t willing to risk her heart again to the only man able to destroy her—or can she?
The Christmas Countess is a revised and expanded version of the story that was previously published in the October 2019 multi-author anthology, Once Upon a Christmas Wedding.
This novella is part of the Valor of Vinehill series, though it is not necessary to have read any of the books in that series to enjoy this interlude.
Domnall Greyford was essentially adopted by the Earl of Dunhaven's family (H in book 1 of the series). Orphaned at a young age, he never knew his real family until the elderly Earl of Kirkmere passed without an obvious heir, and it was determined that a great-grandfather's brother was married at the time of his death leaving a widow and now, and heir: Dom. Though Dom has been heavily involved in the running of the Vinehill estate, he is not sure how he will manage a property as its lord. He isn't sure what to expect when he arrives at the abbey he has inherited, but it definitely wasn't the nearly frozen body of his long-lost love.
Widowed Lady Karta Leventon is desperate for help: her best friend and maid is very ill, she sent the staff of her modest dower home away for Christmastide, and she must find help if there is any chance to save her only ally. Karta decides to brave the furious snowstorm to try to reach her nearest neighbor, the abbey held by the Earl of Kirkmere. But as determined as she is, the weather becomes more severe, and she cannot see where she is going. And she is so cold and so tired....
When Dom's beloved hunting dog leads him to the huddled form of a woman, he isn't sure she is even alive. When he pulls back her hood, he is shocked to discover that the lady is none other than the woman who broke his heart when she left without a word years earlier to marry a titled elderly gentleman. He rushes her to the abbey and immediately does everything he can to warm her up, including using his own hands on her feet... which is what Karta eventually awakens to. Can it really be the man that broke her heart those years ago when he failed to appear at the ball that her father finally agreed lead be their engagement?
So who really left/stood up whom? And can either of these stubborn Scots swallow their pride long enough to work things out? What will happen when Karta's deceased husband's son and now heir shows up demanding that she become one of his mistresses or he will reveal her horrible secret to Dom? Is there any hope for a second chance when such outside forces threaten to snatch away their only change at happiness?
I really enjoyed this story - I have read the books in the Valor of Vinehill series, and I liked Dom when he was introduced in them, so I am glad I got to know more about him and his story. I felt that the "secret" was more odd than earth-shattering as Karta seemed to believe it would be, and I am glad Dom quickly dismissed it. Overall, a great addition to this series!
Plot --- 4.5/5 Main Characters --- 4/5 Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5 Steam Level* --- 3/5 Violence --- nothing graphic or domestic Language --- not egregious POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
I received an advance copy of this book from the author for my honest review.
The first eight or so chapters of this were only three stars to me. It was fine, but a little boring. As soon as George the stepson showed up, my rating flew up. I love a little bit of drama in my romances and drama related to the modesty of a historical period is a real favorite of mine. What really convinced me to give this four stars was the last chapter. I loved the way this story wrapped up. It was so strong and really made me love the hero. The way he treated the heroine was so sweet. This was just what I wanted after DNFing a previous novella. I would definitely read more by this author.
I really liked this one. Too short though. I can definitely see her stretching this one out. Got to love Dom. But I really would have liked to see George get his due. He got off too easy IMO.
This was a nice addition to the series. I'm happy to see Dom and Karta get their story.
A second chances romance, but one with so much unfinished business and pain, that one wants to weep for the main characters. On a quest to find a doctor for her desperately ill maid and companion, Karta braves the snow, ice, and wind to reach Kirkmere Abbey, only the elements are far stronger than she is. Taking up his inheritance at the Abbey, Domnall Greyford has his deerhound to thank for dragging him out into the snow again after a difficult and tiring journey. At the hound's insistence, he follows the yips and barks, until he comes upon Karta's freezing body in the snow. Their meeting after a number of years makes this a difficult time as they tentatively dance around the reasons for their parting and recognise the pull of attraction between them. When a further element enters the plot that tries once again to destroy the connection between Karta and Dom, it would appear that all is lost. Fortunately, Dom sees in Karta a woman with a big heart and not the pawn she had been in her father's hands. This is a bittersweet romance that brings healing and reconciliation. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Two so in love yet people and duty get in the way. 2nd chance only because a wonderful dog made it so during a snow storm. Ms Jackson is a very talented writer. Overall quality of writing is once again amazing. Well rounded characters and storyline, with no cheating or cliffhanger and you get a happy ever after. Yep.... the best present! Enjoy 🤓
WOW!!! An amazing story of second chances. A young couple separated by class dared to love one another. They planned to meet and officially declare their love to her father, but fate was not with them. As cruel as it was she made a deal with her father and now had to keep her word and marry a decrepit much older viscount. Six years later Domnall Greyford and Karta Williamson path crossed once more. Karta now a widow lived in the Leviton Dowager house across the field from Kirkmere Abbey. Dom was now Lord Kirkmere, the new Earl of Kirkmere. They were now neighbors. As much as Karta fought her attraction to Dom it was of no use. Dom never got over her and although she broke his heart, he still wanted her. The way Karta remembers six years ago, Dom let her down, did not show up when he ought to have and that forced her into an unwanted marriage. Little did they know there was a particular person behind their separation. Now Karta felt she could not give into Dom for she kept a shameful secret that she felt if he knew he would never look at her again. She could not sustain a second heartbreak. To make matters worse the heir to Viscount Leviton, her stepson George appeared at her door and because of her shameful secret he thought he would be able to have his way with her. He had a wife and children. But he did not care. For the present he only wanted Karta in his bed. Now Dom suspected this but could do nothing about it. After arguing, trying to escape Karta finally told Dom her shameful secret. He could not believe she believed the nonsense, the absurd manipulative shameful blame of how her husband died that the Leviton brothers spread around society. As they spoke of that fateful eve six years ago, they realized who was behind their miscommunication breakup. Shocking as all these revelations were, Karta believed Dom would no longer want her. But she was wrong. What would become of them? What about the rumors and gossip? What about George. A very entertaining story. I loved the epilogue. It was the icing on the cake proving how right Dom and Karta were together. A wonderful loving romantic story of star-crossed lovers.
I readily admit I am a fan of this author and rarely does she disappoint me. Even though The Christmas Countess is a novella compared to her other works, it still offered a lot of satisfaction to this reader. It is a lovely, second-chance-at-love story that captured my interest from the beginning. The heroine, Karta, struggles to reach a neighboring estate, a former abbey, in a blinding snowstorm, when she becomes lost and disoriented. She is found by Domnall Greyford, the new Earl of Kirkmere when his wolfhound leads him to her hidden form. He is surprised to find Karta, someone he thought to never see again. When she later regains consciousness, she is shocked to see Dom, the man who broke her heart six years before. Karta had been in a terrible, abusive marriage to a man several years her senior, and had been forced to take up residence in the dower house of Lord Leviton when she was shamed and ostracized by her step-sons and local society. The prose used by the author describes very well the feelings and emotions going on between the two main characters. Karta had hated Dom for many years and Dom had held unkind feelings toward her as he had never heard why she left and married an old man. Karta has a secret she doesn’t want to be revealed and knows she must regain her quiet, solitary life before her feelings continue to grow for Dom and her heart is broken again. A confrontation with an old nemesis occurs as well as treachery is revealed which had led to the misassumptions between Karta and Dom. It was so good to read this story of Karta and Dom. Such a heartwarming, second-chance-at-love HEA. I’m so glad there was such a charming little epilogue. I recommend this read. Rating: 4 ½ stars; Heat Level: 3 ½ stars.
The Christmas Countess is A Valor of Vinehill Novel. K. J. Jackson brings us the story of Karta and Domnall. We meet them as Karta is trying to get help for her maid and ends up close to Kirkmere Abbey, but the snow and cold get to her before reaching her destination. Domnall and his dog Theodora find her in a heap in the snow. Choosing to stay at the Abbey while her maid recovers, Karta and Domnall are stuck with each other bringing their past, anger, and love all to the forefront.
K. J. Jackson continues to bring delight readers with her stories. Karta and Domnall will need to get past the hurt and betrayal in order to move on to their future, but will they be able to let it all go? Will the secrets of the past destroy what they are starting to build or will they allow it to continue to drive them apart?
K. J. Jackson continues to weave her magic with her stories. They are always delightful and pulls you into their world wanting to see what happens while not wanting it to end too soon. I enjoyed reading Karta and Domnall's story and look forward to the next adventure.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank K. J. Jackson for this privilege.
This was a lovely second chance romance & I loved both Domnall Greyford, Earl of Kirkmere & Karta Williamson (Lady Leviton). Dom & Karta had fallen in love over 6 year ago & they had planned a future together, even though Karta's father was against Dom & forbid Karta to see him. Misunderstandings, no shows for a ball & an agreement Karta made with her father, found her married to a Viscount, 24 years her senior & swept off to his estate leaving Dom thinking she had married for a title & given up all they had planned. Six years later Dom unknowingly rescues Karta from a snowstorm & takes her back to Kirkmere. Dom & Karta's journey to healing, forgiving & telling truths begin after Dom finds she is now a widow. The story is heartwarming & the couple are a perfect match - the epilogue was wonderful & I had to wipe a few happy tears. I highly recommend this entertaining holiday story.
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Six years ago their happy-ever-after was lost to them, but just maybe they can reconnect and recover their trusting love and secure their future with a whole new understanding.
The Christmas Countess by K.J. Jackson is a well written, spicy-sweet Highland romance with a sigh-worthy ending. It is easy to like both Domnell and Karta because neither of them is truly at fault. They both fell victim to an unexpected force. As they figure out the details of their lost years, the passionate flame that has always existed ignites into a roaring inferno. This time they will not let their desired future slip away.
My only negative comment has to do with a detail that was omitted from the epilogue. But still, I really enjoyed The Christmas Countess.
Content 411: This stand-alone novella contains mild secular swearing and detailed sexual intimacy.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of it from the author. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
The Christmas Countess: A Valor of Vinehill novella was a beautifully written second chance regency romance by K.J Jackson.
It had all the emotions, feelings of betrayal, love and passion which made up to a powerfully woven story between Karta and Domnall. After six years, they find themselves thrown back together by dire chance when Dom saves Karta's life in a snow storm. All their passion and misunderstandings are drawn out and soon the love they once shared becomes again all consuming and this time unstoppable.
Even though this was a short story it had it all and hit all the right notes for me. I'm never disappointed by a K.J Jackson book.
It made me smile. There is so much to deal with from their past your heart just weeps for them. I love characters that take hold like these ones did brilliant writing. This is a second chance for Domnall and Karta they had been in love but they were torn apart. Now perhaps fate was giving them one more chance. I loved how this was written I just allowed myself to be completely caught up in their story. In the end, this gem made me smile and filled my heart with warmth. Lovely piece of work by K.J. Jackson I highly recommend the book. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I truly enjoyed this series, it was filled with many different emotions from hate to love, fear to safety, anger to peace. The story of Karta and Dom brought a closure that was years in the making. This author always has a twist or surprise within her stories that you will not expect. She has great attention to detail and descriptions of her characters and scenes within the story. This is one of my favorite authors, she never disappoints. I would recommend this Christmas read.
Love this author's stories and this one was no exception. A story of a lost chance at happiness with misunderstandings and promises made, two people find each other again after several years.
A snowstorm that sends her to get aid and who other than her long lost love comes to her rescue. That second chance at love that always warms my heart and brings a smile...
This was part of the Anthology Once Upon a Christmas Wedding.
I found this story on Radish. I read some of the other books in this series a while ago, so I did have some background going into this novella. Since I don't specifically remember Karta and Domnall, I think that this story can function as a standalone. It is a steamy second chance romance featuring a couple that was separated due to a parental manipulation. I read it in one sitting. The character of Domnall seems like the perfect hero. He even loves dogs, so what's not to like?
Dom and Karta were in love years ago when a series of events split them apart and sent them their separate ways. Six years later Dom finds her unconscious in the snow near the home he recently inherited as a new Earl. They each believed the other had betrayed them but their attraction was still undeniable. A snowstorm, an evil step-son, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, passion and a love never ending make this a great holiday story.
This story is set in Scotland amid a snowstorm and concerns Karta and Domnall. Domnall was a strong and loyal man and very protective of those he cared about. Karta had an unhappy relationship with her father as he saw his daughter as someone to use for his own advancement. They had known each other six years ago but due to misunderstandings they had gone their separate ways. They still had that connection, even though they and their circumstances had changed. However, Karta has a secret that she is afraid that once revealed, Domnall will see her in a different light. They were both likeable characters who deserved a happy ending but there is a villain to contend with. This was an engaging read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Surprisingly complete story for a novella. Books of this length are often shallow or leave gaps, but I find myself satisfied with this one. Dom and Karta have the best dynamic; love how they each see beyond the other's surface to truly know one another.
This book was wonderful!! I have enjoyed this series, meeting the men and the women who make them crazy!! K.J. has a way of drawing you into the story, making you feel like you are there with them! You are so invested, you don’t want to stop until the end!
Six years ago they lost each other and blamed each other for it. Now he finds her in a snowstorm almost dead. They quickly realize it's not hate they feel for each other but she has a secret. One that she thinks will make him turn away from her. She's wrong.
I originally read this in the once upon a Christmas wedding anthology.. and I loved it then and I love it even more now with the extended epilogue.. It truly had me all misty eyes.. K.J is truly a great author.. I loved this Christmas novella from beginning to end..
This is a bittersweet tale of reunited love. A lot has happened in the six years that Karta and Dom have been separated. It's a slow burn as they relearn each other. The dramatic reveal was not one that I was expecting, which is a pleasant surprise.
I enjoyed reading this novella. It is a book that realistically describes pain, sadness and shame felt by a person. It also describes happiness, love and contentment.
Loved the short novella about Domnall and Karta. It was a sweet loving story with a happy ending. Loved Dom from the first book and so glad he got his happily ever after.
It was a lovely story with likable characters. A little steamy at one point. I enjoyed the series and came back and read this again. I had previously read it in a boxed set.
Ms. Jackson is a treasure. Her writing brings characters full into life and allows them to tell their stories with an amazing range of emotions. This long overdue HEA for Do,mall and Karta created a lovely Christmas gift.
I am very happy that the author decided to write Domnall's story. It rounded out her series and made it feel complete. Setting it at a favorite time of year made it even more special.
Dim and Karta’s story was short and sweet. I would have preferred a little more intrigue with the stepson. I would have liked him to have had a bit more of the story until he was put out. I loved this story and I think everyone will enjoy it!
