Allie Brosh has enjoyed writing ever since her mom tricked her into writing a story to distract her from her immediate goal of wrapping the cat in duct-tape. She started her award-winning blog in 2009. Brosh lives in Bend, Oregon, with her husband Duncan, her two dogs, and six pet rats.
I enjoyed parts of this. (I read Hyperbole And A Half.) She is excellent with animals, especially nutty dogs, and the animal humor resonated with me. I like her utter honesty about her own neuroses, though much of this was repetitive and too drawn out. I found the book hard to read because many of the colored pages were too dark. The depictions of people bothered me - too rudimentary and ugly. To me, a major asset of a good graphic novel is well-done artwork. The dogs and geese were wonderfully rendered, but the drawings of humans were all terrible (the worst being the protagonist) and thus harder to relate to.
I didn't like this book as much as her first book. I understand the author suffers with depression, as do I, but I didn't understand some of her behaviors, they came off as pretty strange. The author seems to strive for being the one human that hands out "appropriate" justice in the world, and takes a lot of offense when she discovers that's impossible and throws several fits. This book would go over well with the younger population where everyone is so easily offended! I wish she would write more about her dogs, that's what I enjoyed most.
Hyperbole and a Half is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. Who is this Allie Brosh? And where did she come from? I’m in the middle of Solutions and other Problems and also funny as hell. Her cartoonish illustrations make me cry with laughter as much as does her writing. Brilliant.
