They Came from The Abyss....

An old prophecy is being revived. Texts from an ancient time read of events happening in the present day. In the city of Checcheri, where cathedrals rise and merchants trade wares, a young apprentice of the Grand Archivist discovers secrets tied to ancient legends that mirror the events of the present.

It all leads back to a book, the long journey once walked by an explorer of eras past, and a contract with the Shades from the Abyss. Baxter must learn what he can and embark on a quest to ensure the repetition of history does not come with a new, dark ending....

Knowledge is Power!
In the Age of Enlightenment of the Empire of Vincia, reading is not a guaranteed skill. Only a select few talented youths can pick up the written word as naturally as so many others can wield hammers for crafting. Two young men from opposite worlds, Baxter the Archivist and Derek the Builder, are put on the path of adventure by the mysterious words of a forbidden tome. Together with a trader's daughter named Eidel, they travel toward the Old World bordering their homeland where the legends have been laid out long ago.

Why should you read The Shades of the Abyss?

Here are the reasons why this book appealed to me. The basic idea of an apprentice going on a quest to save the world fitted the kind of stories I usually read. It is typical of the genre with the usual "power reveal" that comes with the story. This feeling of "oh, he is not so ordinary after all". The thing is, the author does not really dawdle on that aspect. Very early in the novel, from the first chapter, you know that the boy is something special. And the antagonist is introduced right after. So what is left is for the two to meet. And it comes very quickly as it is that meeting that launches the hero on his quest.
If this is the kind of story and development that you like, I do recommend that you read it because it is quite an easy read. The writing is good with very few grammar mistakes.

However, there were points in the book that should be noted. First of all, I had trouble relating to the characters. I felt that they lacked serious development. And then as I said, it wass an easy read but to me, the story lacked originality overall. None of the developments really surprised me and they even seemed clumsy or rushed at some moments and the end of the book seems to come too early. In the end, I felt that this book was more of an introduction to the real story and I am curious to see it really develop in a second volume.

Cool cover! Baxter is a young man who works at the Archives. He's especially interested in old myths and lore. Lately he has been having strange dreams. He finds an old book and goes off on a quest to save the world. I'm looking forward to more of the story!
