I'm going to try to keep this spoiler-free for fans of the Hemlock Creek series, so read on with confidence.
Billie and Barrett and Daddy and Kat and Effin' Doug and even Tom Petty the evil turkey (sort of) make an appearance in this shortie created especially for the Snowed In anthology. If you're not familiar with Josie Kerr's Hemlock Creek Series, this is a good way to dip in and see the lay of the land.
So, this is a romance, right?
Yes.
(Long pause.)
It's also well written and just plain fun to read. Siddown. Hear me out on this. The characters are believable and even better than that, they're relatable. The lead character is not a high-bred lass with heaving bosoms, pouty lips, and mane she tosses as she teases the stableboy. She's fifty, a degreed professional, and someone who has had more than her share of rides in the love blender (TM Matt Groening.)
Her foil, Barrett, is younger, works with his hands, and I'm pretty confident he has an enviable six-pack. He's a good guy, has more than a few brain cells, adores Billie just the way she is, and he has...skills. More on that in a minute. This Barrett person? I can see many of my friends asking Santa to leave one of him under the tree.
Another reason to pick this up is to get a feel for Kerr's way of creating a sense of place as another character. Her dialogue is sharp and so on point, you can hear the characters. You can also hear the cadences of the local dialect. This is leisurely Southern storytelling that coaxes you along. When it's done right, as it is here, you feel -without having to be shown- the differences between where you are and where they are .
The only quibble I have, and this is more about me and my sensibilities than the quality of the writing, is that I subscribe to the Rob Reiner school of thought when it comes to sexually explicit scenes: I don't need to see that unless I am directly involved. So yes, there is some R-rated content. Did it have an effect on my enjoyment of the story? Nope. The tradeoff is reading about people you feel like you know in a place you'd love to visit. That's the magic of Hemlock Creek.
