In a world where elemental magic has disappeared and drought has plagued the land for a century, only one woman has the power to create water.
This is the story of a woman held captive by a cruel king, until a mysterious warrior arrives with the chance of rescue . . .
This is the story of a woman’s journey to find her way back home, a journey that unveils the true extent of her power and the weight of responsibility that comes with it . . .
But above all, this is the story of a woman falling unexpectedly in love—a love that could be the most transformative, or most destructive, of all.
I've been an avid reader of fantasy romance for many years, but have unfortunately become a bit picky over time. I'm always hoping to find a new author or series to get into, and so I'm happy to report that I'm pretty stoked about "The Water Spinner"! The writing is beautiful, and the story, characters, and fantasy world have everything a reader would want. Just hoping the next book in the series comes out soon :)
For those who want a bit more info about the story (without giving away spoilers) - In "The Water Spinner", water has been scarce for about 100 years with the land being plagued by drought. There are four ancient "Wandering Tribes" - the Eewana, Eedaga, Eetori, and Eelara - which represent the elements of water, earth, fire, and wind, respectively. Since the formation of the tribes, there was always at least one "Spinner" in each that had the magical ability to manipulate their tribe's element, which was used to help maintain "balance" in the world. However, for reasons unknown, the Spinners have died out and the only one to be born in a century is the character's protagonist, Elmira - the Water Spinner.
Obviously, with the world's sources of water almost depleted and people suffering everywhere as a result, Elmira's ability to create water becomes a priceless commodity. Without saying too much, there are those that seek to use her for their own ends - since whoever controls the only reliable source of water wields untold power in this world.
"The Water Spinner" is an engrossing yet easily digestible read - I finished it in 2 days! What I really liked was how vividly detailed and well thought out the fantasy world was, yet it wasn't so complicated to make me feel there was a learning curve to understanding how everything worked. I was invested in the characters, and the story flowed naturally and beautifully with a good balance of action and romance. I was satisfied by the ending, yet looking forward to the next installment in the series. In short, for me it really hit the "sweet spot" of what I look for in my escapist reading :)
Again, I'm really excited about this new author/series, and encourage other readers of fantasy romance to check it out! According to the Acknowledgements section, the next book to come will be "The Wind Spinner" - a continuation of a key revelation that comes at the end of "The Water Spinner". Can't wait!
Holy moly. That was a beautiful and beautifully written story. I may or may not have stayed up until 4am to finish it.
Totally worth it. Bravo.
SO stoked for the next book. I would give this one more stars if I could. ALL THE STARS.
Dear author, I get that you have a job and a life but can you maybe abandon it for a while and just write all the books. Plz and thank you. You were meant to write. This is your calling. The world needs it. K thanks.
This book started out amazing! I had very high hopes for it based on the first few chapters, but as the story continued I felt the characters undeveloped. The dialogue became unbelievable (reminded me of Linsey Hall) and the relationship between the main characters progressed too quickly. About halfway through I had to push myself to finish it because I didn’t really care anymore.
I would have given it 3 stars (my typical rating) if the beginning hadn’t been so interesting. My expectations were high so I was very disappointed by the decline in the story and writing that I took away a star.
I will probably still read the next one and just keep my expectations average.
This was a suggestion to me by someone in one of my many facebook groups 😆
I wasn't expecting, honestly, but I have a thing for fantasy and elementals, so I decided to give it a try... and gUrl, i was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED *full on heart eyes*
❗❗❗❗❗ hints of the story ahead❗❗❗❗❗
I remember reading another book about an elemental in hiding but would showcase her powers as if she wasn't an elemental. In this, our girl, Elmira, was openly known as a water spinner and wasn't really hiding because she was being used.
I've read a loooot of fantasy stories already, but the plot in this one was very fresh to me that I was quickly sucked in 😆 It is a fantasy romance, and it is very slow burn. I actually love those, so i personally do not mind because that meant the book would really be plot focused.
I love how Elmira was described as fragile, but at the same time she wasn't. She's not the typical bad-a heroine we love that swings swords and fights gruesomely. She has her water spinning abilities, yes, but what i really like about her is her strong fighting mind. I appreciate how the author protrayed the moments that she was scared and felt hopeless. It made the character development much more pleasing to see how far she'd become. Even her relationship with Greylock, i believe was thoughtfully written. ((Greylock = *swoons*)) I actually like how the other characters were described as well and how they interacted with Elmira.
There was one *incident* in there that me want to drop my device and scream. I just want to say that.
anyway,
There were funny parts and the scenes/places were described thoroughly without it being dull or too long. I reaaaaally wish there was a map in the book because that would've been soooo cool...
so overall like a 4/5, the other star was left out because I personally am a bit forgetful. It would've been really nice if there was like a glossary for the terms (i know some of it was mentioned per chapter but again, im forgetful lol) that i could come back to evey now and then...
oh and i cant wait for the next one! i wonder who we're gonna meet
The book has all the elements I’d want in a elemental fantasy book.
I’m not even sure where to start. Right off the bat, I noticed the writing style and how intricate the word spinning was ( ;) ) The world building was impeccable too! Elemental magic has always been my favorite type of magic in fantasy stories so I was nervous to read this because of my high regard, but I can say with much certainty that this book did not disappoint. I will definitely be recommending this book to my book club girls and anyone who is looking for a good fantasy read.
The action was great, I appreciated the different languages, and the characters were so easy to fall in love with. I’m always for a strong female lead, but I also appreciate the growth to become the strong female lead too. It’s almost better because it makes you step back and grow with the character.
I’m usually not a slow burn type of gal but after everything she’s been through I was so happy for this slow burn romance. Elmira deserves all the happiness and love.
Whenever asked which element I would weave I always choose air, so I’m so excited to see where this series takes us.
I’m so appreciative for the authors work in the medical field, especially in our current climate but I have to say (gently) I think many would agree that we’d like the next book ASAP hahaha. Please :)
"This is the story of a woman falling unexpectedly in love—a love that could be the most transformative, or most destructive, of all."
Sounded intriguing.
I have an extremely soft spot for Mary Sue heroines who don't know their own worth, I adore books with slavery (not bondage) as a theme, and the journey the characters have to make before they are truly free almost never fails to suck me in! The Water Spinner sounded like it would scratch that itch, but from page twelve I was ready to abandon it.
I held on...
I kept reading...
I learned the character's names (finally), and it didn't help...
Ninety-eight pages in I realized it wasn't. getting. better. (For me.)
It was the combination of telling-not-showing, and my own utter apathy for the characters, that relegated this story to the dark and dusty trash bin in my mind.
First person has never been my most favorite of all perspectives but I usually read it well. The character's head we're confined to is just so... bland I wasn't able to overlook it. (Not fact, just opinion.) I wanted to love it! I wanted to be invested! I REALLY wanted to fangirl all over it, but alas, it wasn't working for me and I moved on.
I'm not positive what Fandom this will appeal to. 🤔 There's magic so definitely those who love fantasy, but it also had a slight dystopian feel to it which was fun and opens up the book to more readers!
Trigger warning: there's abuse and enslavement of the main female character. I suspect the hero is going to wind up being very kind but I didn't get far enough in the story to know for sure - I can't speak to the romantic element or triggers beyond the beginning so if you're a sensitive reader proceed with caution, if not, dig in! It might be exactly what you're looking for!
The Water Spinner by Jessie Chang is such an interesting and refreshing read. The way the story revolves around water as this mysterious, almost magical force is super creative. The main character’s journey is emotional and pulls you in, and the world-building is beautifully done.
Some parts were a little slow, and I wanted more from a few of the side characters, but overall, it’s a really enjoyable book. If you’re into imaginative, heartfelt stories, this one’s worth picking up.
I rarely write reviews but this book deserves one. I feel like there is a lot of mediocre fantasy romance out there… This book far exceeded my expectations. The characters, the story, the fantasy world -all of it was perfect.
This author is extremely talented and it was refreshing to read a well written story with excellent plot and great character development. I highly recommend this book.
Elmira and Greylock. Fun read and liked the idea of the plot. I think it had a chance to develop the characters more and Elmira could of been more kickass. While she had moments she seems to plateau in the middle of the book.
Wow, talk about a Diamond in the rough. The Diamond, being this book - the rough, being all of the other books available via Kindle Unlimited. I read so many books via Kindle Unlimited and very rarely do I come across a 5 star book. Maybe once or twice a year, if I'm lucky. Most of them have either a terrible plot, terrible grammar and a multitude of errors or the story line is super redundant in their genre. Some of the unlucky ones have all three. Not this Diamond though!
What a fascinating and engaging story. I was hooked from the very beginning and just could not put this down. Can't wait to see what Chang does with the rest of the books in this series.
This tells the story of Elmira, the Water Spinner. The land lays in imbalance, drained of all its water and Elmira is the only one that can bring balance back as the only spinner in a century. However her gift is sought out by the cruel King Ulrath, who captures her, imprisons her, breaks her down and uses her powers for his own personal gain. She dreams of breaking free and reuniting with her people among the Wandering Tribes and never being forced to use her powers ever again; but it seems like only that, a dream. Until she comes across magnar Greylock, of the Haveneth people. He springs her from her prison and brings her to the Haveneth city of Rystanith to provide water for his people. She thinks he’s just another ruler using her for her powers and he sees her as his peoples salvation, but they both find out that they are so much more to each other.
While their relationship builds, King Ulrath is helbent on reclaiming what is his, bringing war upon those who took his Water Spinner from him. Elmira’s anger towards him urges her to use her powers for more than just balance, instead to seek revenge, but it will come at a cost; because above all, there must be balance…
It has magic, found family, rescues, battles, quests, war and romance. I loved everything about this book. The plot, world building, character development and overall vibe.
I loved Elmira’s story and how she builds herself up after completely being beaten down. Learning how in the right circumstances, she can learn to love and trust, and her gift can bring joy. Greylock is a man willing to do anything for his people but I love how once meeting Elmira, he’s forced to see that he can also find happiness. Also love how cutthroat he is to protect what he loves. The both of them together, with their slow burn romance, were absolutely everything.
Please tell me there will be more to this series because I need more! So so good!
“Sometimes it takes someone on the outside to show you what you have on the inside.”
Let me start this with I have read A TON of books, avid book nerd here for sure and very, very picky on my stories.
**I do NOT hand out 5 stars like candy.**
You all know that feeling of reading so many books and then getting in a slump of nothing exciting you anymore. I've been there past 3 years and this one pulled me out quick! It was so refreshing at the end I was so happy. Yes it has an HEA, maybe predictable, but the story, plot, and character development to get there was refreshing. The bond and love story between Elmira and Greylock kept me intrigued. The side characters were fleshed out but not too confusing where I get lost. Action was great. Love scenes not too graphic. I've read both extreme and mild, and my personal preference is mild, but that's up to you as a reader.
I don't read many elemental stories but am a fan of the concept and this was a unique storyline to me, which I loved.
I hope this reaches Jessica Chang bc I would love to read more of her stories. I have a few select authors that I follow consistently, bc again, I am picky, and she has been added to my list. Keep on writing, you have a unique talent that is rarely seen and I would love to continue the journey with you.
5 STARS have been fully earned thank you for sharing this journey with me!
Jessie Chang is an insta buy author for me. WOW. What an incredible novel and talented author!!! I cannot believe this is her first novel. This had amazing world building, dynamic characters, and a sweet love story. I usually speed read through books but I found myself slow down in this novel just to savor all the scenes.
Jessie has an incredible mastery of pacing. Usually pacing is one of the biggest gripes I have with romantasy novels so I am BLOWN AWAY at how well she encapsulated Elmira's story in just under 400 pages. This is such an incredible romantasy. The relationships are delicate and handled with such care, the violence was harsh and brutal, and the main characters felt alive.
I am in love with the titles of the chapters, the stories within stories, and the vivid, heart warming characters. I was moved to tears several times during this novel. This is perhaps my favorite novel I've read this year besides Carissa Broadbent's books. I cannot wait for her to continue this beautiful series!!!!
I’ll admit, I was wondering if this would be good. It was promoted on Instagram and I took a chance. And man was I PLEASANTLY surprised. It was well written and edited(thank god because now a days that’s a rare find) and a creative story (double chaching$$). The water spinner is a good fantasy, that has heart. There is a romance that I liked as well. My one gripe, yeah there has to be one, is that she creates such a great relationship with the MC and said love interest and then the really romantic scenes seems to be rushed. It’s like finally we get to them kissing and then BAM, it’s over, he rolls over and goes to sleep, next scene, lol. But really, it’s a good book. You won’t regret reading it.
A century long drought. The world needs to heal. And a spinner to bring back the balance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I stumbled upon the book by searching reviews and this fantastic book is now a favorite of mine. I almost jumped off the couch with excitement at the end of the author's acknowledgements that The Wind Spinner continues the saga! I can't wait! I love the budding relationship with Greylock and Elmira through the story and the ending for them was perfect. It's a slow burn between them with a raw start, she is broken and needs to heal. He is patient and kind. I loved how she grows through the story. Elmira revenge on the King had me cheering for her! I really enjoyed the world building and magic the author created, I'm excited to read more.
One of the reasons I stopped reading fantasy romance is because it's hard to find something that either doesn't feel like it's already been done or doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be different. This one kind of feels like the former. She's a really special girl with a really special power. Very much a "chosen one" with a destiny to fulfill. Nothing really new there. The other downside is the dialogue. A lot of it felt forced and unnatural. This was one of those books where I wasn't dying to get back into it to find out what happens, but it kept me interested enough to keep reading and not end up a DNF. Hence the 3 stars. Plus, the ending is pretty decent.
DNF'ed. It was interesting in the beginning, but got super sappy towards the middle. Everything was so convenient, and people's reactions were unrealistic given the lack of water. I won't rate this because I might have just been in a bad mood.
If you would like to know how into the first half of this book I was, I will tell you that I made the font size HUGE (ie. Like 3 sentences per page) and read it while running. Dangerous? Maybe. I guess it would have been a funny story to tell the gym staff that I flew off the treadmill because I was focused on a novel.
This book is great for fans of Avatar the last Airbender. I remember reading the part about the four tribes and their elements and one spinner born every century and messaging my friends “I think I’m reading Avatar fanfiction lol” (not that this writing is fan fiction level! Don’t wanna insult the author!)
Some things I enjoyed:
FEMALE FRIENDSHIP. We didn’t get a ton of developed friendship, but we got some blossoms of it, and I LOVE IT. Something else? The other strong women were good people. They were leaders and friends. I hate reading strong female character be written as one dimensional villains who just want to take the main man and be super catty.
The apocalypse-ish setting. The idea that the world is just like… running out of water? SO COOL. With every clean glass of water that the MC gave to someone, I felt so excited that they were going to finally get clean refreshment.
The love interest’s people were really interesting. They’re all about chemical warfare and sneaking and all sorts of stuff I’m not used to reading in a fantasy.
Now for the things that were just okay:
The first half was so fast paced and exciting, and seemed like the stakes were super high. I think the second half is where the pacing slowed down. My recommendation? This book should have been 2. Or perhaps cut out a chunk of the middle to get to the end.
My recommendation for book 1, if it were to split, would be this: Elmira spends more time fixing the water in the city. It isn’t as easy as she thought it would be, and has a few mishaps. Maybe injuring someone by accident, overexerting herself, just plain not knowing how to do things, etc.. I could read about it for days. It would be nice to see her struggle with the disappointment of the people who were waiting for her as a savior, and having trouble doing everything they expected. Toward the end, she finally starts to get things down, and then THE ATTACK happens. It would have felt sooo cool to have spent so much time with her not being able to use her powers well, to being able to dominate the battlefield in the attack.
Then book two could be the pilgrimage across the desert and what comes after that.
I didn’t really ever feel like anyone was in danger. Honestly, the one named character death at the end surprised me. It just seemed like our two main characters were so perfect at everything, and nothing would stop them.
I think I would have enjoyed the romance a little more if this story were split in half. I love that falling-in-love feeling between characters, and when they get together super quickly it feels a little boring for the rest. I’m sorry to say that our protagonist is MUCH more interesting than her boo. Yes he was perfect and sweet and handsome and a great lover and yadadadada, he was a little boring okay? Give the man a flaw or two.
I very much want to read the Wind Spinner after this. I think that I read that this is the author’s debut novel, so I’m sure she put so much life and sweat and tears into this. I would love to see what comes next.
Jessie Chang creates a great world in this book. The drought, the legends, the tribes. All of it is fantastic.
I found the way the magic worked to be a little vague at times. I would have liked more specifics and a way to see where exactly the limits were.
The romance while enticing, was a little lacking. I feel that is starts a little too quickly and I would have liked to see more building. I think Chang excels at writing longing. She does that extraordinarily well, I just wish that the longing had started like five chapters later than it did.
I found myself wanting Elmira to be a stronger character. She seems to do big things throughout the book, but then is fine hiding behind other people for smaller things. I think overall I wanted her to have more initiative, and a bigger drive for what she wanted.
I think the book overall was great and a fabulous debut novel. I think that Jessie Chang can go even farther and do even more and I'm excited to follow her journey to becoming an even better author.
The book started with a unique perspective and I was drawn in. Yet, I couldn’t comprehend why the king would abuse the Water Spinner when she was the only one on the planet to provide water. I didn’t expect her to be a queen, but the rationale for why the king was abusive wasn’t provided. The statement about how he was evil (not the exact wording) didn’t cut it for me.
Second, this golden retriever MMC fights to save the MFC and has a friend die in the process, is AMAZING at respecting her boundaries, and prioritizes the MFC’s needs. Then, he didn’t want the MFC to be exposed to hearsay. I get it, he should have told her, but the word “betrayal” by the MFC was SO dramatic. Thankfully, the MFC acknowledges this dramatic response and owns she only felt betrayed because she likes the MMC, but storming off, taking the MMC’s horse without consent in a fit of toddler level rage, verbally attacking/manipulating the MMC to get what she wants (she even thinks about how she is going to intentionally say something mean, again towards someone she likes), and then ignoring him after she is verbally aggressive towards him, all while acting like a 13 year old… ugh I dnf’d at 38%.
I totally get the MFC was abused and sheltered the last 12 years; however, I didn’t enter this book wanting to read about an adult acting like a toddler-teenager. The first 30% the MFC was thoughtful, made decisions based on her safety, and was reserved in her trust all because of her trauma, which I really liked this. I also liked that she had emotions and had to cope through trauma triggers, which included panic. Further, she challenged the king in the only way she could, she was creative and sassy, loved it. This initially made me think I would love this MFC, she had a balance (which is what I look for in an MFC). However, that changed when she learned information that was possibly hearsay. Again, I get this was a trauma trigger and she reacted based on that, but when calm and past the trigger, she acted continued to act like a teenager, so I was done reading. She by far did not need to be “grateful” for the MMC for saving her from the abuse/prison, but she completely became unkind, manipulative, and abusive towards someone who did right by her and respected her boundaries.
Wow, I don't write reviews but I'm so forgetful I need to start so I can remember why I love them so much. The Water Spinner, I was NOT expecting to find it that great. I saw that there were not a lot of reviews and was skeptical. However, this book is everything I ever wanted. The two things I look for in a book to really make me read it till the wee hours of the morning is character development and world building. Jessie Chang crushed it! I found myself caring and liking the side characters that one usually forgets and doesn't really care about. I felt genuine hate, love, anger, and care for these people. They came alive on the page. Let get into a bit of the nitty gritty's.
The heroine, Tortured and fragile, yet so incredibly strong and powerful. How was the author able to do that? I kind of loved the fact that it was all in her POV. It left me guessing at the romantic interests thoughts. The hero, I have read enough books to know what might be going on in the head of the other person. Through the writing it was the perfect flow of showing not telling. I LOVED the protectiveness and anger and power and just pure sweetness that radiated from this guy! 10/10 would recommend.
If there's a trope that I look for on a regular basis its having an outcast being brought to the culture and love of another community, and belonging to it. This almost fit that. Enough so that I still got my needs met;)
Just one more thing before my super unorganized review is over! I love a good romance book, don't get me wrong. But I am even more obsessed when romance isn't the main purpose of the book. The heroine wasn't constantly thinking only of the hero, (Although there was enough to keep me happy.) She had other thoughts and worries that took up a lot of the story. The romance was beautiful and the story was so well thought out and the battles were so well done.
I feel as though in recent years, the quality and content of books have fallen short of the classics that we know and enjoy today. Simplistic writing, bland storylines that take place in unimaginative worlds. Not since the likes of Sharon Shin and her Archangel series from the 90's (if you are unfamiliar with her works, I highly recommend that as well) have I delved into the realm of high fantasy romance and truly found myself immersed within the story and the lives of the characters unfolding within. In fact, it was through Shin that I gained an appreciation for the romance genre-but I digress.
Chang's Water Spinner (soon to be series, quasi-spoiler?) masterfully weaves a classical romantic tale into a spiraling and daring adventure through a highly imaginative, mysterious world struggling to survive in the wake of a cataclysmic imbalance. The author literally pulls no punches in their writing, this quickly becoming apparent little more than a few pages into the book. From start to finish, this book is definitely a page turner, and leaves you hungry for more answers than the author is willing to divulge. When you finish that last page and snap out of your literary reverie, prepare to echo the sentiments of your fellow readers - when is the next book coming out??
Would give 3.5 - I was really into the book (skimmed the torture bits in the beginning but couldn’t put it down after that) until somewhere half way. It was right before the attack from king U, and I just lost interest. It continued that way especially as the main character kept throwing herself into harms way to save others against loved ones askance for her not to, and then blamed herself when people died for her actions. I found it super annoying. There just seemed to be a lot of chapters that didn’t add to the plot and were fillers. I liked the slow build of the romance and found it really sweet, again until about half way. The inevitable scenes at the end where they hook up were just sooooo awkward to read, perhaps bc while it was a slow burn, it felt rushed-fake.
Lots of potential, but I pushed thought a lot and then just skimmed at the final battle scene as we were once again reminded how cruel King U and his men were and what felt like a forced setup for book two.

My favourite part of the book is the realistic depiction of PTSD. A lot of fantasy books where the female protagonist goes through hell, their emotional trauma is so downgraded and brushed off and then miraculously they’re this amazing super hero. This book takes time to show that she’s struggling to trust and find her self worth. And another part I like is when she actually recognizes that she’s beautiful because she resembles her mother, which to me was very sweet. I also liked how the male figure in the book respects her and her wishes, which is something that definitely needs to be normalized more. Loving someone doesn’t mean stifling them. And I also liked the ages! He’s in his 30s and she’s in her mid 20s! The story itself is a bit similar to Avatar the Last Airbender, so to me it wasn’t super original, but I still liked it.
I loved every moment of this book and found myself both wanting to tear through the pages at breakneck speed to find out what was next, but also slow down to savor the experience. I fell in love with Elmira and so many of the characters; each of them came to life in a rich way, not just the protagonist. The world is fantastical but also believable because the details are so vivid. There’s enough epic adventure and epic love for each to stand on its own, but together they’re a beautiful story that really stayed with me. At the end I wanted to jump into the next book in the series - it's not out yet (sigh!) but I will be counting the days!
At first I was going to give it 4 stars because I thought maybe there should have been some indication where these folks got their water before her but there was a mention of digging for it and the fact that it didn’t rain at all was a little much. But in the end I decided to give it 5 because that was my one and only hang up. I thought it was written really well. It was fast paced and kept me interested from start to finish. There wasn’t this insta love...the main characters began a friendship that evolved. It was very beautiful. Overall I was very happy with this book and I’m looking forward to the next one.
