Title: Bearskin Author: Brianna Hale Genre: Paranormal Romance Type: Novella from Slay Belles & Mayhem anthology POV: First Person - Dual Rating:
Carys was in desperate need for her safety. With her baby in tow, she tried to run from a wolfpack when a stranger came to her rescue. But Balen might not be who she originally thought.
I haven’t read a shifter book in a while, and this was my first bear shifter story. It was an interesting read, and even though it was more warm and cuddly than I expected, I enjoyed it.
Balen was a lovable teddy bear, but the claws came out when it’s needed. I like Carys with her nurturing quality. For something short, the storyline felt complete, with engaging conflict and enough actions and heat.
Bearskin is a story of finding the other half. It would appeal to readers interested in a quick shifter read.
Exiled by her village for being different, Carys and her infant son flee to the woods only to be hunted by wolves. In the midst of an attack, a stranger comes to her defense but then Carys finds herself alone with an imposing beast of a man who calls himself Balen.
“You don’t know what you are, do you?”
Told in dual POV, this story is centered on two characters who are without a community. Though Carys is cautious at first, she quickly realizes Balen is a plush warm bear that just wants to be connected with his mate. Showing he is gentle, loving, yet fierce they form a unique bond.
Going into this story, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I was entertained by this romantic tale and adored Balen. I also sympathized with Carys’ plight and liked how she was willing to trust Balen despite how she was treated by her others.
Bearskin is a paranormal romance about accepting differences. This book would appeal to those seeking a shifter story with heart.
*An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review.*
THE BLOOD ROSE by Claire Marta ☆☆☆☆ Omg, I fell in love with the atmosphere of this novella. Intriguing, dark, eerie, intense and scorching hot, this story gripped me. The ending was a tad rushed for my liking but had certainly an interesting twist in it.
BEARSKIN by Brianna Hale ☆☆☆☆ Mrs Hale always write amazing Daddy stories and I recognized her style throught this novella. I would like my own Balen, you're warned! I want this sexy protective alpha with a huge heart to keep me warm and protect me! Bearskin is definitely a feel-good story!
THE GiRl WITHOUT HANDS by India R. ADAMS. ☆☆☆ If there is one book that made me uncomfortable in the several I have read in this anthology that is certainly this one. I absolutley love when my boundaries are pushed and this time, the author propulsed me way out of my comfort zone. I'm sorry to admit that at one point I almost stopped reading. Keep in mind, though that The Girl Without Hands has a HEA, so I encourage you to try it for yourself. I promise that the writing style is pure perfection. I felt for the heroine, all along. I cringed, I screamed but I also smiled, that is how good the author is. Nevermind the darkness, you'll always find the light that will warn your heart and keep you going and fighting for the best, just like her characters.
Eight delectably twisted tales, something for everyone from taboo, shifters, magic, necromancy and human trafficking. I’m not usually an anthology reader, because I want the whole story, not just a taste and having to reread the whole book when it’s released later, Na. Having said that there is a mixture of novellas and a taste of what’s to come. Two of the authors left their stories off with a conclusion, but a promise of more. Very clever of you both because most of us don’t like cliff hangers. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed Slay Belles & Mayhem.
The Girl Without Hands by India R Adams - 5 stars
“To men who believe anything is free, may they lose their eyes and feet.” That way they can continue to be blind, yet not have the ability to run from the price of their crimes. Just as my mother nor I could.”
As usual Ms Adams had me riveted to the pages and her words. This isn’t a fairy tale it’s a brutal and heart rending story about a girl born in captivity. She has only ever known men who are cruel, her innocence was stolen...she has never been able to smell the Roses or dance in the rain. This was a tease into what promises to be an even better story. Characters from her other books are interwoven into her story. Yes there may be triggers, but walk into this tunnel with us, as there will be light. My favourite story in the anthology.
The Blood Rose by Claire Marta - 5 Stars
“Cocking his head, the stranger smiles. “Isn’t it strange how winter is so beautiful, yet everything around us is dead?” “Yes, it is.” I agree, finally finding my voice, my breath rising in little puffs. “But only to be renewed, reborn, in the spring.” “Such a young soul, a young heart to be so melancholy.”
Curiosity killed the cat or so the saying goes. Samantha has a morbid curiosity for all things associated with death. Travelling to Paris, immersed in the history she walks through a cemetery marvelling at the beauty. Rafe an artist, watches her until he succumbs to her lure. A tantalising ending or maybe it was just the beginning with more to come? Not my usual genre but I absolutely loved this!
The Lords of Sutherland by Murphy Wallace - 5 stars
“We will walk these woods until we find a new home. There, we will rebuild our life and no one will speak of Mother or Father again,” “To speak of them is to commit treason; the punishment for which is death.” “Furthermore, from this day forward we take an oath to destroy any woman who comes into our path,” “by any means necessary.”
The king has gone mad, sentencing his twelve sons to death should he have a daughter who can take his place. Their mother sends them off until it’s safe to return. However she delivers a girl and they can never return. They vow to never return, speak of it and take their anger and frustration out on women. Forgiveness is found in the most unlikely place.
Snow’s Surrender by Lylah James - 5 stars
“When he was good distance away, he paused and then looked over his shoulders. Our eyes met. “Follow me. I have something to show you.” I didn’t have to listen to him. I could have stayed where I was and ignored him. But I chose to stand up, chose to pick up my book and chose to follow Duncan King. It was my choice. And that choice turned into a very twisted ending.”
A very twisted version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Snow was sent to boarding school after her fathers death. Five years later, she’s almost eighteen with practically no contact from her mother. Snow goes to visit her mother and meet her new husband. She disregards everything she was taught at school and gives in to temptation. Will the wicked queen be her demise or will she be rescued by Prince Charming? Most importantly I doubt you will see the twist coming.
Bearskin by Brianna Hale - 4 stars
“What are you running from, kochanie?” His voice is deep and rasping, and strangely accented. His warmth is seeping into me. He holds me as easily as I hold Finley. “A wolf pack, and another beast. I think it was a bear. Take us to your village, please. For my baby’s sake.” “Wolves. And a bear,”
Cast out into the freezing weather with her baby, Carys climbs the mountain hoping for a miracle. She senses danger lurking, hungry wolves as despair settles in. When she senses something large and foreboding leap over her, travelling down towards the wolves. She stumbles and a large hand reaches out for her, it belongs to a huge man. Is he her saviour or her demise?
His Diamond by Abby Gale - 4.5 stars
“I light a cigarette and inhale deeply as my body stirs with want for the blonde beauty. I want her. And I will take her. Tonight is the night I’ll take my acquisition. I will use her innocence against her, then take it away, by selling her to the highest bidder.”
Be careful what you wish for because everything comes at a price. Escaping your controlling parents only to find yourself under the control of another isn’t freedom. Luca believes women are untrustworthy and only there to be used, however he seems rather smitten with his diamond. Maybe he won’t auction her off...this one is going to be turned into a duet and I have some theories running around in my head. Can’t wait to see where this one takes us.
Red and the Wolf by Dani Rene - 4 Stars
“The big bad wolf won’t eat you if you don’t veer off the path.” I turn my head, branding him with my stare. “That’s a fairy tale told to little girls to scare them.” Those ocean eyes take in my sleek strands before he shrugs. “Perhaps. But little girls should always be wary of predators in their way,” he says. “Especially when they go visit Grandma.”
He’s powerful, dominant and a wolf on the hunt for someone to stand by his side. Just so happens that someone owes him and it’s time to collect. From the first moment he saw Scarlett and witnessed her sass she was his. Visiting her grandma gave him the perfect opportunity to reveal his plans. Ms Rene left us hanging and wanting answers.
Glass Cage by Anna Edwards 4 stars
“There are things in this world , Nyah, we can not see, but they are out there. They’re all around us, controlling our lives and our future,” my father adds cryptically. “Father, what are you telling me?” I question. “I’m talking about magic, Nyah. It exists.”
Nyah’s ancestors promised her to Malachi, prior to her birth. Her parents groomed her for this life changing event, instead of protecting her innocence. However her twin brother Connor is not impressed and his actions result in imprisoning them both, by the hand of the devil himself.
Glass Cage by Anna Edwards 🧙 This was an extremely cheesy and corny magical story of witches and shifters. An evil male witch must have sex with virgins To keep his magic powerful and prevent aging. He finds one and almost Marries her until the girls brother comes to rescue her only to be turned into a stag. The Clock strikes too late for the evil male witch so he has to wait a year until he could marry her and keeps her in a glass cage. Fortunately, the brother who is now a stag find another male witch to help rescue his sister. it’s extremely silly and a quick read. Insta-love and an HEA guaranteed. Not exactly a story that’s “drenched in darkness and Mayhem” like the anthology promised. Star rating: 2.5 🧙
Bearskin by Brianna Hale 🐻 🐺 ❄️ Balen and Carys are such a cute and fierce couple! I really enjoyed this story. A woman on the run for her life with her baby through the snow in the woods being chased by a pack of wolves. She has no idea shifters exist but she quickly find out when she runs into her mate, a bear shifter. This is a story about survival and love. And it was absolutely adorable. “Because I crave you more than life itself and I can’t let you go. I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth before I lose you.” Balen has lived a long and hard life. And he finally finds his mate.. but it’s not so easy. He must fight for her. Star rating: 5
The Blood Rose by Claire Marta 🌹 Okay Wow!! I’m so glad I’m reading each story because I am floored by this story! I absolutely loved it and I’m seriously craving more from this author and world! “In a sea of strangers, we’re somehow the same. Two lost souls looking for a connection.” A woman on a journey “over the pond” connects with a stranger in a cemetery. Instant attraction from both, he shows her around and teaches Her history of his walking grounds. You can say things get a little weird. Who is this awkward artist who talks like he’s been around for a thousand years?! This story was so dang good. It’s really a soulmate/love story. I hope this author writes more! Star rating: 5
Red and the Wolf by Dani Renè 🐺 So this is a story about a young woman Scarlett being sold off to a man her father was in debt with named Lycan. This is a really short prequel that abruptly ends when she’s about to try on wedding dresses. This is not my first read by this author. But I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just simply not a fan of her work. He has a brother that he’s trying to kill which there’s really no backstory as to why. They’re both after Scarlett. I don’t know. this story didn’t do anything for me. The acknowledgments after the story were thanking Kristy Bromberg for allowing this author to write in the Driven World.. A totally different story so .. I’m sitting here like what?! Star Rating: 2.5
The Lords of Sutherland by Murphy Wallace 👑 “It no longer feels wrong when I’m with my brothers. It feels right, safe, and warm. Without them I wouldn’t know how to breathe. With them, I’m at peace. With them, I’m free. With them, I’m complete.” This story is about a King and Queen banishing their TWELVE sons from the castle and stripping their rights away as future King and Princes because they had a daughter they wanted to rule the 🏰. Fast forward many years later, The daughter discovered she had 12 brothers and runs away and find them. She finds four of them. Four of them went in their own to have families of their own and the other four died. Before she found for whatever reason blames her for their banishment and treats her like shit even though they are sexually attracted to her. This is a taboo incest story. If you can’t handle incest relationships, skip this one. So this story was just okay for me. I’m good with some dirty ass incest stories but the plot and rebellion was mediocre. Storyline was weak. Star Rating: 3
Snow’s Surrender by Lylah James 🖤 “ This wasn’t a perfect love story. It was a twisted tale, an imperfect love… But it was enough for us.” Oh this story is gooooddd!! Twisted and steamy. Little innocent snow becomes not so innocent during her stay with her mother and new stepfather. I can’t really say much about the plot without giving anything away but this short novella was fantastic. Star rating: 4.5
The Girl Without Hands by India R. Adams 💔 Wow. Out of all the stories in this anthology, this is by far the darkest one. Please read her trigger warning before proceeding with this story. I am someone who lives for these dark and brutal and triggering stories. This is also a new to me author but I’m about to stalk her ass because she is an amazing writer with a twisted mind. I will absolutely be looking forward to reading more from India R. Adams. This is a very twisted story of sex slavery, human trafficking, with incest. There’s tons of rape, including children. Yes to an HEA. Star rating: 5
His Diamond by Abby Gale 💎 Ramonas fathers stole from the wrong person. Luca Caruso. Lucky for Luca, he uses that as an excuse to get what he wants. Ramona herself. This is kind of a insta-love book. It was short and steamy and leaves in a cliffhanger. 3.5 stars
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 Overall, this anthology 3.5 stars. The stories were a hit or miss for me. Some of them are just downright silly. However I can appreciate the fact that I found some new to me authors that I absolutely will be searching their backlist now. This anthology said it was going be dark tales.. only one story was somewhat dark and disturbing which was India R. Adams story. I didn’t find any of the stories dark and I certainly didn’t find them to be drenched in darkness and mayhem like the anthology stated.
This anthology im only read one story so thats the rating for that!!
Bearskin by - Brianna hale ⭐⭐⭐
I was okay with this story wasn't my fave Brianna hale book hut it was okay for me. Cary is on the run with her baby from a pack of wolves who aren't well wolves. She runs into Balen a grumpy Bear shifter who has protected her and knows she's his life mate. Not wanting to scare her off just yet he tries to slowly inform her. But he has limited time since those shifter wolves want her and the baby. Balen is going to fight for his mate and her child.
No ow drama slight Om drama, no cheating, Drama, sexy times, no virgins

Slay Belles and Mayhem took me from one dark, twisted, depraved story to another. The variety. The diversity. The twists. The forbidden and filthy passion. Fairy tales remodelled and retold by some extremely talented authors.
Snow's Surrender by Lylah James was my most favourite story of this anthology. A sinister, depraved and beyond taboo retelling of Snow White. Snow didn't expect a gorgeous, devious and brooding man like Duncan King as her stepfather when she comes to his estate on request of her new remarried mother. This man is so cocky, arrogant, infuriating and sinfully dirty. It is wrong but they have a smoking hot connection that is too hard to ignore. Oh it was erotic, it was filthy, it was depraved. Snow's innocence is mercilessly and indecently destroyed by this man.And then came the jaw dropping secret. Duncan King isn't exactly the man Snow thought him to be. The ending was beautiful and brilliantly executed.
The Lords of Sutherland by Murphy Wallace straight out made me rethink my own sanity. I mean how can I find this extremely taboo story so enticing? Princess Jocelyn finds out about her twelve long lost brothers from her mother and set out to find them. But her brothers hate her and despise her because her birth was the reason their insane father wanted to kill all of them and they had to run away. Now they want her to pay. And their ways are carnal and dirty. Jocelyn is ready to do anything for her penance and to get them their rights back. Oh dear..these men. Only four. But too hot to handle. It's erotic. It's dirty. And I am falling for each of them. Brooding ,angry ,broken and intense James. Playful twins Harry and Henry. Soulful Benji. And strong and fierce Jocelyn. Fairy tale for sure.
Red and the Wolf by Dani Rene made me throw my kindle when I reached at the ending and I realized it's not complete! Scarlett has been "sold" to Lycan Shaw by her parents to save their own skin. She isn't ready for this marriage but Lycan is ready to own him. Lycan has so many enemies like his brother because he is powerful and rich. Scarlett is clueless and confused. I cannot wait to see what happens next and I NEED IT YESTERDAY.
His Diamond by Abby Gale is a dark romance about sweet and adorable Ramona with heart of a sinner and the devil incarnate Luca. Age gap. Forbidden. Intense. Steamy. Dramatic. The storyline gripped me and that cliffhanger drove me crazy. I cannot wait for the full book.
This anthology also features Glass Cage by Ana Edwards ( a fantasy romance), Bearskin by Brianna Hale( a shifter romance), The Blood Rose by Claire Marta( a horror themed very spooky necromancer romance) and The Girl Without Hands by India R. Adams( a dark mafia romance that was hard to read but was quite inspiring.)
If you love dark romance with twists and steam, Slay Belles and Mayhem is a must read Anthology for you.
AFTER THIS SERIES OF DARKNESS...THESE STORIES WILL NEVER BE THE SAME FOR YOU. I love absolutely all the books in the series but the one who left a mark was RED AND THE WOLF By Dani René
Red Riding Hood in a new fashion with a Wolf more dangerous than ever... Lycan Shaw brings you to the dangerous edge of darkness...you will feel everything happening around you but the attraction between them will tie your hands to do anything but endure this twisted enthralling ride. I am amazed at just how this author has mixed the paranormal romance with an innocent childhood fairy tale and gave birth to something phenomenon.
Snow White was a innocent creature who s waiting for her Prince to save her right?!! But What if the prince who is coming for her savior is the one looking to trap her. Lylah james have done her magic again...how she manage to make me fall more in love with astory from my childhood is just beyond me...the phrase "We still read Fairy Tales but they are just dark now" perfectly suits this story.
I have literally GOOSEBUMPS after reading this short story. I can give my kidneys just to read an extention of this amazing tale...so much heartbreaking awe moments. I mean if you are familiar with her writing you will know she reaches inside us and touch that emotional part which is recluse from even ourself...Just amazing...
Slay Belles & Mayhem by DANI RENE, MURPHY WALLACE, ANNA EDWARDS, CLAIRE MARTA, LYLAH JAMES, BRIANNA HALE, INDIA R. ADAMS AND ABBY GALE
I was so integrated when I learned about this book! I love dark and twisted stories and I love the Grimm stories so together they promised something great! I think that like most' I grew up with the Disney versions of the stories but the originals were much more dark and not happy endings or prince charming and true love that saves the day – they touched the human nature and fears and imagination and they were no bed time stories! This book takes it to another level – various writers, each tool one story and gave it their own twist and darkness and they really made me think The stories are: Glass cage Bearskin The blood rose Red %thw wolf The lords of Sutherland Snow's surrender The girl without hands His diamond I knew and loved some of the writers' others were new to me but I will read more of their writing! My favorites were: Glass cage by Anna Edwards This writer was new to me but I loved the humor she used and the twisted way she uses not only the story but also the rules of the genre about the innocent that her virginity might empower evil ang must be prevented from and siblings love at all cost
Bearskin by Brianna hale Omg – almost made me wear my hood and go find my mate in the woods Red and the wolf by dani rene Omg – the hunter! Mysterious, kinky and magnetic And red – I really wants to take her place and now I'm waiting for the second part of the story And the girl without hands by india r. adams I have never read her before and I will again Her writing is phenomenal The story is heartbreaking and empowering at the same time And I read it breathlessly GREAT BOOK!!!!
I initially intended on reviewing each book separately but once I started reading i didn't want to stop to to write down my thoughts. So I will just say this....What a fantastic collection of stories by a wonderful group of authors!! Dark and twisted from one book to the next.
What a FANTASTIC set of stories by a group of amazing authors!
I truly enjoyed each and every story that covered a wide variety of genres, tropes, and wicked twists. Dark, gritty, seductive, and downright addicting. Grab your copy today. Highly recommended!
Where do I even start! I absolutely loved how these stories took each author in completely different direction. Who knew India has a dark side, or that Lylah James could make you fall in Insta love with her chracters. These stories were so good and I didn't want them to end. I can't wait for the rest of Red and the wolf, His Diamond, and Hostile grace so many amazing stories coming in 2021. This collection was brilliant.
I plan to read the entire anthology, but, for now, I've read Bearskin!
Bear Your Skin *arc generously provided by the promo team in exchange for an honest review*
What a sweet little story! I don't usually read shifter stories, but Brianna Hale made me tap into that genre real quick. This was an entertaining read full of action, love and protection. The chemistry between the characters was wonderful, and I loved how fierce our lead was about protecting and nurturing her baby. Let's just say it as it is. Brianna Hale can get me to read anything LOL
Sometimes falling for the forbidden isn’t always in your best interest. Luca, a club owner who has a serious distrust of women and a healthy level of “I see something I want, I take it,” can’t help his attraction for the young and naive Ramona, who may be starry-eyed, but knows what she wants. This age-gap romance is dark, steamy, and sinful in the best of ways. And that cliffhanger! I can’t wait to find out what the author has in store for us next.
*The Girl Without Hands by India R. Adams*
Riveting from start to finish!
This author doesn’t hold back when it comes to dark and disturbing. (Please heed the warning before you start this one.) The story is intense, heartbreaking, and at times, difficult to read. But in its darkness comes the beautiful way the author was able to suck me in and keep me reading without pause from start to finish. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
This is a new-to-me author, and after reading this compelling story, I’ll definitely be checking out her other books.
This is my review for The Girl Without Hands by India R Adams, as I finish the anthology I’ll update each review accordingly to each story.
The Girl Without Hands- 5 ⭐️: I don’t know if it’s because it’s almost 4 am and I have not slept. But, What. The. Fuck.
The audacity of India R. Adams to allow me to read an ARC of TGWH and then just do us all readers like that. Like the audacity. Woman!! I love and hate you but right now more of the latter. 😭😭😭
I don’t know if I need an India support group or an India kidnap team to get all the missing words 😂😭 or both cuz yah know moral support and vengeance is right up your alley 😩
Like what bribes do you need for me to get all these other books that are interconnected??? Kids? I got two that are house trained, mostly. My left tittie? Cool I never liked it anyways 🤣 Help a girl out with some insight!!!
Ugh I’ll blame my dark circles and my crushed soul on you.
The audacity man. Where’s my author stick when I need it 😑
Needless to say this story is a must read, ignore my melodramatic rant if you must because this story checks off all points on my list! We dive into a dark and grimy world where Hope is nowhere to be found. India spins a tale like no other and you will not be disappointed. Be warned as it’s not for the faint of heart, but trust me, it’s worth all the torture and pain.
The Girl Without Hands was so such a hard book to write! What my character goes through is this story is so tragic. I'm grateful she finally finds her HEA! Annnnd, there is more! The Man With A Treasure!
This was a captivating novella that, wonderfully, did not end on a cliffhanger. I always appreciate that in an anthology because, though I understand the reasoning behind enticing readers through a partial story I hate not knowing how things end. In this novella, an evil witch traps the heroine Nyah within a glass cage until the timing is perfect to marry her, take her virginity, and drain her youth. But there's another male witch on the scene and he's willing to do whatever it takes to rescue Nyah from her glass prison.
Bearskin by Brianna Hale
I am a huge fan of shifter romances, so I have to say that this novella was the best of the bunch for me. This novella was more romantic than dark. It had dark themes but those themes remained outside the relationship between the hero and heroine. Our hero, Balen, was such a protective alpha male and I swooned every time he spoke. The fated mates trope did away with any eye-rolling at the insta-love between our two lovebirds and the whole novella just felt very...right. I would have read a full-length novel in a heartbeat and I hope Brianna Hale writes more shifter romances!
The Blood Rose by Claire Marta
I am not entirely sure what Grimm Brothers tale this was inspired by, but it was a very intriguing tale. And quite spooky, honestly. It gave off some lite horror movie vibes, so if you like getting the chills from your romances then you're really going to enjoy this book. When Samantha meets Rafe she thinks she's snagged a hot fling in a foreign country, but Rafe's romantic plans have sinister undertones and Samantha may be in way over her head.
Red & The Wolf by Dani Rene
This was an interesting take on Red Riding Hood. It's not a novella that wraps up at the end, so prepare for a cliffhanger, but for those who enjoy non-con/dub-con themes and evil men bent on forcing the heroine to submit to his every whim...this is a novella you'll enjoy.
The Lords of Sutherland Murphy Wallace
This novella was really well-written, but it ultimately did not jive with my tastes. There's full-blood incest between a sister and four of her brothers--along with some rough treatment/dub-con--which is not a theme I am interested in, but I am sure someone here will love it!
Snow's Surrender by Lylah James
I thought I knew where this novella was going but about three-quarters of the way in I went "Whoooooa" because there are some twists, y'all. I won't ruin it (because how cruel would I have to be to do that) but James got creative here because: mind. blown. It was very sexy too with some age-gap and some step-father action. There's also cheating though, so if that's not your thing you might want to be careful. I don't usually enjoy that, but I have to say that I didn't mind much given the somewhat low morals of most of the people involved.
The Girl Without Hands by India R. Adams
I chose not to read this book based on the content warning, so I can't review it.
His Diamond I really like Abby Gale's writing and this novella was more of the same in regard to quality. That said, I found this book pushed the boundaries of dark for me a little, as I've never quite liked the theme of women being sold into sex slavery. But I know that many of you do like this, so I'm sure you'll be dying to continue to read the future books in this series (it ends on a cliff hanger).
I’m glad I discovered two new authors with this anthology! Some stories were definitely dark, twisted and taboo but most of them weren’t that dark at all.
Glass Cage by Anna Edwards - 3⭐️ This was my least favorite in this anthology. I liked how it started and was curious how will Nyah get out of her cage. First two chapters had a good flow to it, but then the whole rescue and ending felt rushed and messy.
Bearskin by Brianna Hale - 4⭐️ I’m not really a fan of shifter romances but Balen might get me to reconsider that. He was one possesive bearskin! I liked how he instantly became protective of Carys and little Finley. He had to fight for his fated mate but in the end they get their sweet hea.
The Blood Rose by Claire Marta - 5⭐️ I loved this one so much and I hope there will be more soon! Rafe had me completely charmed and mesmerized and I loved the building relationship between him and Samantha. The story had an eerie feel to it but was so beautifully written. I found this story really touching and it left me wanting more!
Red and the Wolf by Dani René - 4⭐️ Scarlett and Lycan’s story was a great twist on Red Riding Hood. Lycan is alphahole you will love to hate. He’s completely unapologetic in taking what he wants. Scarlett showed a good backbone and I enjoyed their push and pull. This one ended on a sudden cliffhanger and I look forward to read the rest of this story story!
Lords of the Sutherland by Murphy Wallace - 4⭐️ This was a taboo incest story but due to heroine growing up without knowing she has brothers it didn’t really have that big taboo feel to it. The author did a good job with characters. I liked how each male character had their own strong personality. And I loved how Jocelyn had special relationship with every one of them. They each gave her what she needed in their own way. And in the end they were able to get their unconventional hea.
Snow’s Surrender by Lylah James - 4⭐️ Loved this unique taboo spin on Snow White! I tought I knew where this story was going but that twist caught me by surprise! It was super steamy and dirty but I wish it was a little bit longer to have a better plot development. I can’t help but feel like the ending was rushed!
The Girl Without Hands by India R. Adams - 5+⭐️ This was my absolute favorite, it was so beautifully written despite dealing with such horrible topic. Scarlett’s story gutted me. I cried the whole time while reading it. It started horrible but if you push through there will be a beautiful healing and a HFN ending. And I can’t believe this is my first read by India R Adams! I’m in awe of this author and her talent to pull such strong emotions from reader. I can’t wait to read The Man With A Treasure!! And in the mean time I’ll definitely read author’s full backlist. And PLEASE heed the author’s warning because the first half of the story is really dark and disgusting and it’s not fair to the author to leave bad review just because you didn’t pay attention to the trigger warning!
His Diamond by Abby Gale - 4⭐️ Luca was another alphahole that was hard to like. Luckily he redeemed himself towards the end. Ramona seemed sweet and innocent but she craves rough and dirty. And Luca was more than willing to dirty her up! I look forward to read more in this series!
This anthology contained stories from eight different authors. Some of the stories were sneak peeks or beginnings, while others were novellas and completed. I had a wide variety of reactions and opinions, so I think it’s best if I detail my thoughts for each story separately.
The Glass Cage by Anna Edwards: Just not for me. I wasn’t that interested in the plot. I had many questions: Why her family? Would any virgin work? Were shifters and magic “out” and widespread? Anyway, I found that it moved very fast and the “romance” was not believable for me.
Bearskin by Brianna Hale: YES! A fated mate! Just what I needed. This novella was short but the pace was well written and the characters were fleshed out just enough to be enticing. I can’t resist a snuggly bear shifter.
The Blood Rose by Claire Marta: This one may have well been my favorite. Two characters that have an instant connection, yet the dark side of death and magic was present and frightening. Well written and intriguing, I can’t wait for more.
Red & The Wolf by Dani René: A little dark for my taste. I am usually all for the “parents sold their daughter to the antihero” but this antihero didn’t have any redeeming qualities. More to come regarding these characters, so there is potential.
The Lords of Sutherland by Murphy Wallace: Taboo to the extreme? A little too rapey for me.
Snow’s Surrender by Lylah James: A stepfather that comes into his stepdaughter’s room at night and does some dark and devilishly pleasurable things to her, with a twist I didn’t see coming. Quick ending but definitely enjoyable.
The Girl With No Hands: ok but wut? Thought this was a ROMANCE anthology? Why would you make me read about child rape?
His Diamond by Abby Gale: Another “parents sold their daughter to the antihero,” but this time I fell for Luca. He starts off acting heartless but it soon becomes clear that he can’t stop himself from being sucked into her light. Ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what the author does to redeem him.
I walked into this story blindfolded. I did not know what I was walking into...
Oh my goodness! I didn’t know that Lylah James could write such dark and taboo plots! When I heard she was writing a dark version of Snow White, I was expecting a sexy and playful romance! BOY WAS I WRONG!
Duncan and Snow are by far the most taboo couple Lylah has ever written! I did not expect such plot twist! Pls I was so confused and scared that Snow had fallen for a man that loved playing games but then BOOM!....👀
Also, the age-gap! OH MY. I must be honest, I’ve always stayed away from books with age gaps that are with characters that are BARELY of age. I was nervous on how the story would play out with Snow and her age. But in the end, Lylah was able to provide a short novella with enough detail to make you feel comfortable about Snow’s and Duncan’s relationship with one another.
Overall this was such a different take on Lylah’s usual dark romances! I definitely wish the novella was longer so that the plot could have developed better allowing the characters to grow and express their true intentions. I wanted to see more of them falling for each other and then incorporating those dark scenes where we are confused why he treats her the way he does 👀
THIS IS A VERY DARK AND TABOO NOVELLA WITH TRIGGER WARNINGS SO PLS READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION! ⚠️

review for lylah’s “snow’s surrender” ARC provided
i always knew lylah was capable of writing dark and taboo romances, but this one she completely blew out of the park.
i didn’t quite know what to expect going into this except for the brief list of tropes that lylah had provided and the fact that it was a snow white retelling. however, nothing could have prepared me for the rollercoaster that is “snow’s surrender”! it was a wild ride that i couldn’t tear myself away from. i devoured this book in less than an hour - a quick, yet well-written and easy read.
snow was sweet and innocent - almost a complete opposite of her hero. despite the dark themes and action in this novella, there were sweet, tender scenes as well that brought snow and the hero together and deepened their relationship.
the only reservation i had about this novella was the age gap. however, this is completely personal preference and i know most dark romance lovers will be unfazed by it or will quickly get past it.
i loved this novella and i really wish lylah was able to go beyond the word limit!! i could tell that there was so much she wanted to mention but needed to condense due to the limit she was given.
in the end, if you enjoy dark, taboo, fairytale retelling romances with big plot twists, and an age gap, you will love this novella. it was well written, a quick fix, and certainly contained every element promised (as well as some sweet scenes as well).
OH MY, the sweet little tale of Snow White gets the naughty treatment! Lylah James’ Snow’s Surrender is a decadently dark and titillating twisted delight!
Holy smokes did this short story suck me in. From the first pages I was consumed-which just shows the captivating and enthralling dark charm that is Lylah James. This is a dark and addictive new take on this well loved story of a girl with skin as white as snow. We still have our Snow- and we have some creative nods to the original, too. But this Snow White is transformed by the magic we love from Lylah James into a story about a deviant and controlling alpha and a sweet but increasingly feisty heroine trying to navigate his perverse thrall. Lylah doesn’t just dirty up the snow- she goes full dark, and not just with the large age gap- so if you have triggers take note. But I just loved this story- so much erotic tension, the naughtiness of the taboo, the unexpected suspense, and the many twists she packs in that I did not see coming. And, as a dark romance lover, LORDY this one was hot and steamy. I don’t know how Lylah packed so much heat, backstory, suspense, and twists into one small story- but Snow’s Surrender packs a punch, and I’m still thinking about it hours later. This story is a delicious and tempting dark apple just waiting for you to take a bite- and the bite is well worth it.
I LOVE anthologies, and I’m delighted to see so many of my favorite authors involved in this one since it focuses on all things DARK. If the other stories are anything like Lylah’s, this will be a fast favorite. Looking forward to reading the rest!
I love shifter stories and Ms. Hales's story was just what I loved in shifter romance. Carys is on the run, with her baby, from a bad wolfpack. Balen finds her and takes her to his cabin not knowing exactly what was going on with her but then she doesn't know what he is either. This is a short read but it's packed full of emotions as we follow the characters on their journey. There is some drama with the wolfpack after Carys and when the ending came, I wanted more. I really hope that Ms. Hale makes a little series out of this because the potential is certainly there. Wonderful story, wonderful heat between the characters and I loved Balen so much!!!
I am reviewing Lords of Sutherland. This book was a different and new read for me. It starts with 12 brothers and how they handle learning their parents are having a 13th child. The book progresses quickly to the future and what has happened with this family and the newest child. Even though this is a quick read it has a good back story and plot to keep you interested. This story also has Taboo elements. One element is this book is RH. I’ve never seen the appeal to ever read one (this is my first) but after reading this I will definitely look into others. So if you like some steamy RH I definitely recommend this book!
I LOOOOOOOVED this collection of short stories based off of tales! They were all so so soooo freaking good. Some were short stories and some were introductions to future books — all of which I’m very excited for. I could not put this anthology down, each story was so captivating and addictive. They were dark, twisted, taboo, suspenseful, angsty, very steamy and romantic. There are a variety of tropes, feels, heroes and heroines. There are sweet and gentle heroines, feisty and brave, and a combination of both. Some heroes are swoon worthy, some are dominant and will leave you tingling. I know some are pointing out two or three but it’s so hard to pick favourites, all of them were so good. All of the heroes, heroines and stories were absolutely incredible, they were so captivating and addictive, I loved them all and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this anthology!
I love modern retelling of fairytales, especially the darker ones! I'm looking forward to reading more of this anthology and will add more reviews as I go.....
*The Glass Cage by Anna Edwards (3.5) Nyah doesn't believe in magic until an evil witch comes to claim her and her purity. Can Griffon save innocent Nyah and break a curse before she falls into the clutches of the wicked Malachi? This was a very short, easy to read fantasy on the darker side of sweet, with magic, curses and sacrifice. It was a pure insta lust. I loved the concept but it was all a bit quick for me to really believe in love, but there was a definite happy for now ending. I'd love a longer more fleshed out version, there was certainly the potential with a few intriguing supernatural side characters too.
*The Girl Without Hands - India R Adams (5) There are trigger warnings at the start, please heed if you have them. This was a heartbreakingly very dark retelling about a girl, Scarlett (Scar) who was born in captivity. She had a brutal existence which was hard to read at times. No-one should suffer the abuse she suffered, but she survived it with such innocence, it broke my heart. A beautiful, broken soul finally feels hope when her angel of the night finds her. India R Adams writes with such depth of feeling, I'm glad there will be more to Scar's story, I'm desperate to see her healing and exploration of the big world continue with her guardian angel.
*Bearskin - Brianna Hale (3.5) This wasn't a dark story at all, but I enjoyed this sweet shifter soulmate story
*The Blood Rose - Claire Marta (4) This story was definitely on the darker, macabre side, it was a bit different too and I really liked it. Texan Samantha travels to Europe and meets the mysterious Rafe at a Parisian cemetery. He wasn't at all what I imagined, so I hope there will be more to this story and he was dark and intriguing.
*The Lords of Sunderland - Murphy Wallace (3.5) A very taboo story about revenge, retribution and righting the sins of the father. There are triggers here, dub con and incest. It's not a topic I would perhaps normally read, but it was well written with a good amount of depth for a short story. It's not too dark but is focused more on the unconventional taboo side of love, healing and Jocelyn finding the missing parts of her soul.
This collection was simply amazing! It had all the feels from moments of laughter, moments of sadness, moments of frustration to moments of angst everything was simply perfect. Full of intrigue and suspense, they gave me a sense of excitement for what would happen next.
Whenever I hear there is a new anthology coming out, I’m always intrigued by what it will be. This particular anthology really peaked my interest!
One particular story is Red and the Wolf by Dani Rene. It’s a take on your favorite childhood story, but it is most definitely not what you expect! It is so much more! The characters are Lycan and Scarlett and they are incredible! Lycan is a businessman who may not always do things on the up and up. When he meets Scarlett, he knows that he needs her in his life and he will do anything, and I mean anything, to get her. Scarlett may be young, but she is smart and feisty and I really loved her character. I really enjoyed this story and hope this author makes it into a full length book!
Another story that intrigued me was The Lords of Sutherland by Murphy Wallace. It literally blew me away! The story of Jocelyn and her family certainly gives you a new meaning of that word. From the very beginning I knew this story would break certain barriers and it most certainly does! Jocelyn discovers she has brothers and is determined to find them. When she finds James, Henry, Harry and Benji, she never expected her life as she knew it, to irrevocably change forever. This story is most definitely taboo, steamy, dirty and delicious. I found Jocelyn to be endearing and each of her brothers had such different personalities and they all just meshed together perfectly. I honestly didn’t want this story to end. Loved everything about it!
