50 Ways to Wake Your Human is the second collection of cat cartoons by Scott Metzger. Cat lovers will appreciate the comics, which highlight the ridiculous behavior of felines (and humans) through topics such as music, social media, parenthood, relationships, and living in quarantine. This book will make you laugh, smile, and further appreciate our weird, furry friends who wake us up in the wee hours of the morning.
Cartoons are one of the most subjective categories of reading matter that I can think of: what makes me crack up may leave the next person completely cold. I was enjoying “The Bent Pinky” on Go Comics for some time, so when the author mentioned that he’d just published this collection, I added it to my wish list and, lucky for me, someone gave it to me for Christmas, yay! Many of these cartoons have cats interacting with modern technology like smart phones, ordering from Amazon, etc., and the ones toward the end of the collection also make reference to the pandemic. But a large percentage of the cartoons are re-writing verses (“Oh, the Places You’ll Doze!” by Dr. Mews) and popular songs. I can’t resist noting my favourite of the latter here: “You just call out my name/And you know wherever I am/I’ll ignore you. I don’t give a damn./Winter, spring, summer or fall/I won’t respond to your call/I’ll ignore you. Yes, I will/You’ve got a cat.” Sheer brilliance! Any human who has ever had a cat will testify to the accuracy of that song, and to all of the other cartoons in this collection. Very highly recommended!
I purchased this for a gift, but of course I had to look at it first. From the song on the cover (sung to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover), all the way through the book, its just cute. Every cat owner knows what it feels like to be awakened by their cat insisting that it is breakfast time. This book just fits right into that, but don't let the cats near it, they'll get ideas.
