Packed into a pocket-sized book is a concise selection of art from the last two decades of the 20th century, culled from the Taschen title 'Art at the Turn of the Millennium'. Two pages, with illustrations and biographical/bibliographical information, are devoted to each artist.
This is another nicely designed offering from Taschen. There are so many names across so many disciplines featured in here, all artists appear to be over 30 with a strong emphasis on work done in the 80s and 90s. We get a nice two page summary of each artist, so that more often than not we are left wanting more and that’s what good reference books should do.
We get a wide selection of artists, from the wildly famous and successful Jeff Koons and Tracey Emin etc, though no Damien Hirst?...to some of the more obscure and lesser known names. One of the many appealing draw cards about Taschen is that with them being a German company, we get a new and refreshing perspective on the art world of the time, instead of the same old rent a gobs from the Anglophonic world, we get to hear and read another side, which can only be a good thing and help to broaden horizons and deepen perspectives.
Great book for those who likes art from the 1980's and 1990's. I probably would have given a higher rating if I enjoyed more art from this era but I'm not much of a modern art girl. (I had to buy this for a college class.)
Does its job as a coffee-table book showcasing art from the late 20th and early 21st Century - from household names to less well known artists still featured in major institutions and collections - just don't go into this expecting any critique or revelations.
