Style in Colour is an interiors book celebrating the influence of color in the world of design and our everyday lives.
Built around the insights of renowned stylist Julia Green gathered over several decades, Vivid looks at the spaces we inhabit both at home and at work, and how the application of color can create different outcomes and impacts. The book includes eight chapters divided by orange, red, blue, green, pink, yellow, neutrals, and black. Photographer Armelle Habib contributes stunning interior shots alongside travel vignettes that tell the story of how different palettes are interwoven into our lives.
Vivid features interviews from leading proponents of the art of color around the world, including Martyn Thomson (Sydney), Jessica Bettenay (Melbourne), Marielle Ienna (Palermo), LRNCE (Marrakech) and Los Enamorados (Ibiza). Short essays on color in styling and design complement the photography, addressing the science of color and color psychology, confidence in bold or clashing color, using color to connect or divide spaces, artworks, layering color for depth and texture, and styling for small spaces and for the seasons. Vivid tackles questions around the application of color and, crucially, where to begin if your life feels like it could benefit from some new (colored) energy.
An interesting romp through explorations of color with interviews with designers and artists - definitely more geared toward folx with houses and money to furnish those houses.
Good photography, adequate prose, and it added up to a really enjoyable read. If you like house books with exotic locations and lots of color, congratulations! Here one is! I don’t know how helpful the advice would be to someone who isn’t already perfectly confident in their use of color… guessing not very. “Have a plan before you start hammering holes in your walls” seems kind of discouraging to people who are already reluctant to create any holes. This is inspiration, not a guide.
Content note: higher than average proportion of nude art featured.
