The rabbit takes the siblings to the Conjurian, a land where magic exists and Pimawa can talk. But the Conjurian is in trouble. Magic has been disappearing, and the Shadow Conjurer, the most mysterious sorcerer of all, is on the hunt for the Eye of Dedi, an object so powerful it could destroy the Conjurian and human worlds. The battle to control all magic has begun. There's only one problem: Alex and Emma don't have any!

Masterful storytelling and dozens of captivating illustrations fill author-illustrator Brian Anderson's world with charm and intrigue. Fall under the spell of the Conjurers.

Part A Series of Unfortunate Events, part Tony Abbott's The Copernicus Legacy, this adventure has impressive tricks up its sleeve. -Booklist

Magnetic and inviting. It's rare that a cast of characters is just as magical as the world around them. This story--especially with its brilliant illustrations-- succeeds in luring readers into another world. -Scott Reintgen, author of Saving Fable

It's been ages since I read a middle grade novel, but I enjoyed Rise of the Shadow very much. It's a creative, funny, fast-read featuring likable siblings, Emma and Alex, who are plunged into a war between those intent on eradicating magic and those determined to save it. The illustrations definitely added to the reading experience. For fans of magical mysteries, recommended ages 8-12. Part of a series.

This was for my 2nd prompt for A Touch of Whimsy’s Adventures Through Wonderland Readathon for an aesthetically pleasing book. This is definitely that! Not only on the outside, but inside!! It is FILLED w/beautiful illustrations on almost every page! So stunning. The author is also the illustrator, & the talent on that level just blows me away!!😍😍 This was such a great book! The story was fascinating!! My only complaint is it wasn’t long enough!😆I need more, ESPECIALLY after that ending!😳I love a good sibling story, & Alex & Emma were awesome! This seemed like a true depiction of how siblings actually are. They were so different, & disagreed & argued. But when the chips were down, they were there for each other, or doing everything in their power to find/help one another. I found the backstory of the magical world they enter so interesting! It’s so hard to know who they can trust in this world, but they know for sure they can’t trust the Shadow Conjurer or his Rag-O-Roc’s-which were both SO CREEPY!! While it’s hard to tell if we can fully trust Nelil & Clive-I LOVED THEM! Lol they were so amazingly written, & I could see them vividly in my mind-just like I could everything in the book. They were so great. Pimawa has my whole heart! I love him!🐇 I can’t wait to see more from Savachia. I think he is a great character, & can bring a lot to the series, & w/Emma. This was such a great adventure! I can’t wait for the 2nd book! Highly recommend!!💜💜

This was a cute children's fantasy series starter. Kids who like portal fantasy and magic will like this one. The world was cool and there was a lot of running from an evil ruler who wants all of the power. Add in a large talking rabbit and the adventure can take off. It ends off on a cliffhanger for book 2. Solids kid-friendly fantasy book with beautiful illustrations by the author.

*Huge thanks to the publisher for a copy to read!

What fun!!

Alex and Emma have a problem. They're being chased by the Shadow Conjuror and they have no clue who to trust!
With a thrilling mix of engineering, sleight of hand, and what must be real magic, Brian Anderson sets us upon a true adventure into a world desperate for renewal where every foe is potentially a friend...or are they?
I had a great time reading this fast paced story that left me hungry for the next book in the series.
Although the book is listed as young adult, it feels safe for the upper end of middle grade as well.
Great work Brian Anderson!
Definitely worth the read!

Rating: Solid Book

Rise of the Shadow is the first book in a middle grade series in which siblings Emma and Alex find out that they are actually part of a family of magicians and are whisked off to a secret world where magic is real, and they are being hunted for their connection to an artifact that is rumored to be able to save magic.

Emma is the older sister, and she is the dreamer of the siblings. She is an optimist who looks for the good in people and situations, while Alex is a realist and is very pragmatic and logical. We follow the siblings as they make their way through this new world and attempt to figure out their place in it and who they can trust.

This book is a very quick read, and it has beautiful illustrations every couple of pages, which add to the whimsical feel of the story. It is definitely a middle grade story, and it reads on the younger end of the age range, closer to young readers. Unlike some middle grade that I have read and enjoyed that deals with more complex themes and characters, this particular book is more straightforward and didn’t give me much personal enjoyment reading it as an adult.

However, I do think that it would be an excellent choice for young readers. The bad guy is somewhat scary with floating skulls and skeleton pieces that is illustrated, which may not make it a good choice for especially young readers; however, the pacing is good and the world is fun. There are flying fish and human sized talking rabbits, which are all illustrated.

Overall, I give this one a solid rating of 3 stars. It’s not necessarily my favorite, but it is doing what it set out to do in the age range for which it is intended.

Thanks to @tlcbooktours for introducing me to the Conjurer series! This was a quick, fun read full of illustrations, magic, and excitement. This is the type of book I'm going to definitely hold onto so my son can read it when he gets older. It's on the upper end of middle-grade but will appeal to kids of all ages. Overall, I had fun reading this, but THAT ENDING!!!! It had me screaming!

3.5 out of 5!

Loved the illustrations done by the author!
And I also really enjoyed the story, though I would have liked more magic & whimsy.

This one was more of an action-adventure story. So, definitely a suspenseful, page turner!

My favorite characters were the main characters: Alex, Emma & Pimiwa. Other than those three I didn't find myself really invested in anyone else.

Also, I found the story to be a bit confusing at times.

But, again, this one was never boring and perfect for those looking for an action-packed adventure story with elements of magic included.

It was a pleasure to read, fun and exciting characters, but no ending. It's a complete cliff hanger. Will I invest in getting the next in the series? Yes...and now you can buy them both together. (It really is one story.)

Cliffhangers are my least favorite ending - in books and movies. Waiting for the ultimate end is agony, and I’m a patient person. This story deserves 5 stars, but I was tempted to give it 4 stars because of the cliffhanger ending. To learn what the book is about, read any synopsis. To get hooked, read the Kindle preview that Amazon provides. That’s why I ordered the book. I had to know the rest of the story.

This is a very quick and easy book to read. The words and action flow so smoothly and quickly, especially if you love fantasy books and magic, which I do. One of my favorite lines in the book is spoken by Pinawa, the children’s protector: “If you don’t take risks, you will never achieve miracles.” Not exactly a sentiment I’d expect to find in a magic book, but magic does require risks, and watching some magic is like watching miracles being performed.

The illustrations are wonderful, and further enhance the reading experience. The children remind me of so many children I’ve encountered in my life, particularly during my 35 years as a teacher (English teacher and then librarian). The adults are also familiar, and represent almost every adult a young person might encounter in his/her life. I’d recommend this story for middle school readers, as well as avid readers of any ago who love magic themed books. My ten year old niece will enjoy it for her 11th birthday; I enjoyed it, and I’m in my 60s.

Back to the cliffhanger ending - Brian Anderson does provide Chapter 1 of the next book, which did assuage my curiosity a bit. But Spring can’t come fast enough for me! That’s when the next book in this series comes out, and I hope this cliffhanger will be resolved satisfactorily. Will there be more books in this series, with even more suspenseful endings? I hope so, even if I am left hanging at the end of each one!

The Conjurers rise of the shadow
By Brian Anderson

The story has exemplary components moving it along, has some sudden turns of events. I can suggest for individuals of most any age. I made some extraordinary memories perusing this speedy story that left me hungry for the following book in the arrangement.

Alex and Emma are shipped off live with severe Uncle Mordo after their folks disappeared. Just Emma's pet hare, Pimawa, stays with them. Yet, when flying skeletons called Rag-o-Rocs storm their home, the children get away from in the nick of time with Pimawa driving the way.

The hare takes the kin to the Conjurian, a land where sorcery exists and Pimawa can talk. However, the Conjurian is in a tough situation. Wizardry has been gradually vanishing, and the Shadow Conjurer, the most puzzling magician of all, is on the chase for the Eye of Dedi, an article so incredible it could obliterate the Conjurian and human universes. The fight to control all wizardry has started.

Likewise it's written in a simple way which is truly straightforward and totally remains associated till the end.

Every one of the characters are created in an extremely captivating manner.

This was an absolutely incredible surprise. I definitely have read a lot of middle grade books, and this book was absolutely magical and unique. The Conjurers introduces siblings Emma and Alex, with their parents missing, they are sent to stay with their very strict and eccentric uncle Mordo. Emma's rabbit named Pimawa serves as a companion to the children.

One night some strange visitors pops up on their home and with the help of Pimawa, Emma and Alex will have to run for their lives and in the process discover a magical world full of wonder but also danger. Absolutely loved the magic system and the perils the siblings encountered and of course the fact Pimawa served as a guide into finding why the magic is dying and will have towork together to save it.

Step inside a world like no other dear reader where you can ride giant fish, rabbits walk around talking on their hind legs while wearing clothes and flying skeletons stalk the skies. These books are aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years who love reading fantasy and magic but adults will also enjoy this enchanting series.

The narrative follows Alex and Emma Maskelyne who live with their strict uncle Mordo. When Alex was only two years old their parents vanished, believed to have gone missing on an archaeological dig. Emma who is the oldest of the siblings still strongly believes that they will come back and keeps a suitcase packed ready for their return. Alex is not so convinced and believes in facts. He tells Emma that they are gone and that this isn’t like one of her fantasy novels that she buries her head in where they are magically going to reappear. The Maskelyne children learn to live under the harsh rulings of their uncle and fail to make any sense to his way of life. He even forbade TV yet Alex manages to build one from bits and pieces he’d found in the rubbish or tucked away in the attic of their uncle’s Victorian Manson. His sister watches magicians performing death defying tricks, marvelling at the magic happening on the screen. Alex takes a more logical approach and explains how it’s all an illusion, he believes there is no such thing as magic. However things quickly take a strange and unexpected turn when a gaggle of flying skeletons, known as Rag-o-Rocs, storm their uncle’s home followed by a creepy figure called The Shadow Conjurer. The siblings are quickly thrown head first into a unknown world by following their pet rabbit Pimawa through a mysterious passageway to the world of Conjurian. It is here they learn the truth about their parents who were magicians and on the hunt for the legendary Eye of Dedi that could help save Conjurian. Magic is dying and only with the eye can it be restored. But the Shadow Conjurer seeks the Eye for himself to become the most powerful magician and rule over both worlds, Conjurian and ours (known as the Flatworld) He believes that Emma and Alex know of its location and hunts them ruthlessly down throughout both books.

Both main characters are a delight to follow and watch develop throughout the series. Alex is determined to learn as much as he can about his parents’ disappearance and solve the clues that they left behind. In book one he is in extreme denial that their parents were magicians and that the world of Conjurian exists. He believed it to be a hallucination, a dream. Yet towards the end of book one and throughout book two the fog starts to lift and he slowly realises that it is all real. Emma believes strongly in fantasy and magic, the endless hope that her parents are alive. She is far too trusting as a character and finds herself in a number of situations in Conjurian with some very shady characters. In book two she throws her dreams of her parents returning aside, accepting that they are gone. She channels her anger towards the Shadow Conjurer, wanting to help the people and find the Eye of Dedi. She starts to see that she can’t always trust everyone she meets and some people are only out for themselves. Both characters grow before your eyes and it’s fascinating to read.

I hardly had time to catch my breath throughout this series as at any given moment I was aware that a Rag-o-Roc could suddenly jump out and snatch me. Emma and Alex are constantly running and looking over their shoulders in book one but by book two they have decided it’s time to stop. It was empowering to read as these two children decided against all odds in a world they know little about to stand up and fight for what’s right.

Alongside Emma and Alex the reader also encounters some interesting and unusual characters such as Neil Grubian and his brother Clive. They add even more personality and charisma to the story, keeping you guessing: Who can you truly trust? There are many twists and heart stopping moments that will leave you open mouthed in shock as events take a dramatic turn.

I give The Conjurers Series By Brian Anderson a Four out of Five paw rating.

The imagery and creativity is felt throughout and I soaked every last bit up. I did not want to leave the breathtaking world of Conjurian.

I was excited to return in book two. Anderson leaves you literally holding your breath at the end of book one. I raced to start book two. And WOW I was not disappointed.

The Conjurers by Brian Anderson is a middle-grade fantasy book about 2 siblings (Alex and Emma) finding themselves in a new world filled with magic (which they never thought existed). Emma and Alex were born and raised by their parents in the 'flat world'. After a tragic accident, their parents simply vanished, and both the kids were left under the care of their Uncle, Mr. Mordo. Uncle Mordo has always been a bit strict, who made them follow rules, which the kids never liked, especially Alex. So he plans to escape with his sister. Little did he knew what would come knocking on their door on a dreadful night. He would come face-to-face with the shadow conjurer itself and would be forced to run away in the middle of the night, following their pet rabbit that apparently talks.

The Conjurers is fantasy-filled adventure series and I loved the book. I read the entire book in 1 go. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, which made reading much more interesting. When I discovered the author did these illustrations himself, I was blown away. Such a great writer and an illustrator. Wow..!

Talking about the Characters, I love an age-appropriate character representation. It's usually difficult to write the characters when it comes to middle-grade books and I have had this issue with a lot of books. The writing would be tremendous, the story would be outstanding, but the characters would either sound way too young or way too old for their age. But Brian wrote both Alex and Emma in an age-appropriate manner, which is just perfect.!

Alex is younger than Emma but is more practical when it comes to reality. He calculates every situation (even when he was stuck in a magical world) and tries to come up with a possible solution. Alex is a geek when it comes to technology and has way too many questions about everything. Emma is the exact opposite. She is a dreamer. She is a believer. Even though everyone says that their parents are dead, she still believes they would one day show up out of nowhere(just how they disappeared). She loves reading fantasy books (like us all :p) and believes in magic. The contradictory personalities of the siblings are very interesting (and probably what will help them stay alive).

Apart from these characters, I liked the rabbit named Pimawa. He is this cute naive soldier, who still needs to know the master he serves isn't all good. Savachia is another great character and I do hope to see more of him in the upcoming series.

The storyline revolves around all of them trying to find the most powerful magical object in Conjurian, 'Eye of Dedi', which everyone knows was found and hidden by Alex and Emma's parents. The siblings have to find this before the shadow conjurer or the world of Conjurians will be in peril.

All-in-all it's a great middle-grade series. It's short and sweet, although I can say that it could have been a bit thicker. This is a book that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. I would definitely love to read the next books in the series.

The Conjurers #1: Rise of the Shadow written & illustrated by Brian Anderson

13-yo Emma & 10-yo Alex were dropped off with strict & mean Uncle Mordo 8 years ago when their archeologist parents went on an excavation but never returned. Alex is logical, level-headed & brilliant with machines while Emma is a dreamer and believes in magic. They are homeschooled, not allowed to watch TV like other kids and only have Pimawa their pet rabbit to keep them company.

One-night flying skeletons & the faceless Shadow Conjurer attacks their Uncle in his mansion & they are told by their uncle to follow Pimawa to safety. Suddenly, they are thrust into another world called The Conjurian where magic does exist & Pimawa can talk & walk upright. As we follow the siblings on their thrilling adventure of trying to find out what the Shadow Conjurer wants with them & what exactly happened to their parents. Were they who they said they were? The ending left us hanging and we really wanted to know what happens in the next novel, Hunt for the Lost! The 3rd novel in the series will release on 2/22/22!

Author Anderson does a great job telling this fantasy middle grade story with detailed illustrations that my children & I thought were really captivating.

We were lucky enough to be sent a signed copy of the first book (which my daughter thought was very special) and we have the second book as an e-book and after getting to the end of book 1 I'm glad we had the second book as book 1 finishes on a cliffhanger and wouldn't have wanted to wait to read the next one and I know my daughter wouldn't want to wait!

The Conjurers follows the story of siblings 13 year old Emma and 10 year old Alex after they were dropped off to live with their mean Uncle Mordo after their archeologist parents went missing. The dynamic between the two is wonderful with Alex being more level-headed and the one who is brilliant at all things engineer related and Emma who is a dreamer and believes in magic.  You are taken on a journey through a world of magic and mystery the story is fast paced and a really fun read. It has been perfect for my almost 10 year old to read alone and reading it has inspired her to start writing her own story. There are absolutely beautiful illustrations inside the book which help add to the story when children are reading as it helps them build the story in their mind.

Perfect for 8-12 year olds and a really good trilogy for kids to get in to.

Anderson creates a world where magic is real and keeps everyone alive. Unfortunately, that world is dying and only a missing magical item has the potential to save it. The story opens with Emma and Alex, siblings who live with their uncle and are totally isolated from the world (our world). Their parents are missing and have been for years. Uncle Mordo is strict and they are miserable. Alex is a skeptic; Emma is a dreamer. Early in the story readers get hints that people are not who they seem. When the home is attacked, Mordo sacrifices himself to save them. He sends them with his white rabbit and the arrive at Conjurium. Again, no one is who they seem to be and Alex and Emma are separated so experience different parts of this place. Their enemy has followed them here and continues to hunt for them. Everyone thinks they have knowledge of the mysterious artifact their parents had searched for.
Plenty of action and suspense for middle grade readers.
My frustration is that there simply is no ending. The book simply stops rather than end on a cliffhanger.

Brian Anderson clearly is familiar with many well-known children's novels from past generations. Rise of the Shadow begins feeling like an homage to Alice in Wonderland (it starts with a white rabbit leading two children down a hole to magical land), with some hints of The Phantom Tollbooth and overtones of the Lemony Snicket books added in. The opening chapters feature characters hitching a ride on a giant fish, among other big magic and metaphysical tomfoolery.

Unfortunately the book doesn't stay that way, but instead turns into a more standard adventure story. All the clichés arrive right on schedule: missing parents, solitary item left by missing parents, message hidden inside solitary item, evil overlord bent on world domination, and so forth. The book is fairly short and illustrations take up quite a bit of space, leaving fairly little room for plot. With all that said, I still might have given this three stars if the ending wasn't such a ripoff. None of the questions from the book are answered and nothing is resolved, which is likely to leave readers feeling cheated.

I don't pick up a lot of middle grade because I usually gravitate towards Epic Fantasies. But, sometimes a middle grade bool where siblings try to fight strange creatures with the help of a talking rabbit and a world where magic and illusions are real ia just what you need. I really liked how the story flowed with the illustrations and the characters. I think Alex was one of my favourite characters closely followed by Mr.P !! The world building was simple yet so detailed and the illustrations gave a sense of immersion that one has with watching a movie. I absolutely loved the story and I wish I had the next book to continue with the series!!

They are being chased by the shadow conjuror and they have no clue whom to trust.
With a mix of thrill , excitement, fantasy and adventure the author has presented the story in such a way where every foe is a friend.
This book has a very interesting plot i love Emma aur Alex's journey through this magical world.
Also it's written in a very easy manner which is really easy to understand and absolutely stays connected till the end.
All the characters are crafted in a very fascinating way.

So I’m getting major Lemony Snicket, Roald Dahl vibes here from Brian! I absolutely loved being in this world, as I love magic (obviously Hannah) - it was so fast paced, full of twists and turns that it will definitely keep your attention. I did not want to put it down!

The characters are so amazing, with each their own stories to tell - which I hope we will find out the more we dive into this world & read the next instalments. I think kids everywhere will fall in love with this world (Conjurian) and would love to see what other mischief Alex and Emma will get themselves into.
Of course you don’t have to be a kid to read this! If you’re into magic, world building, fun characters, & just love vibrant and colourful middle grade literature, then definitely check this out!
Thank you so much to @randomthingstours & to @dogeatdoug for sending me a gifted copy of The Conjurers to read & review for the book tour!

"Rise of the Shadow" is the first of Brian Anderson's books that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of the two main characters, Emma and Alex. This brother and sister are literally dropped into a fantasy world of horrors in the mist, a rabbit that is trying to protect them, and adults who hid their true characters. The story was really interesting in its development, enhanced by Mr. Anderson's truly marvelous artwork throughout the book.

However, the ending was not satisfying. The story was not completed. It seemed to 'hang in place' without giving the reader satisfaction.

All-in-all, I am looking forward to the second book. It may solve the unanswered questions.
