This is a mystery involving a cold case, a murder that took place ten years ago.
It is a Love Inspired book by prolific author Shelley Shepard Gray.
I have read many of her books over the years and there is a great consistency with all of her writing I have noticed.
Not many authors can write well in different genres but she does.
All of her books are well thought out,the characters go with the plot of the story and the writing is of excellent quality.
Our main character is Artist Liana Mann. She was pushed into marrying a man by a family member. They thought it was for the best.
Liana carries a secret with her, a secret many know about but don't speak of. They know she was an abused wife but minded their own business because who really speaks about this kind of thing.
Her husband has been missing for ten years now, someone knows what happened to him but their not talking. They aren't talking to the police and they aren't talking to each other about this.
Her husband has now been found and he's been murdered.
There's a long list of possible suspects, after all if he's murdered he can no longer hurt her.
Could it have even possibly been Liana that has done it to escape the abuse?
Liana doesn't trust anyone especially the police since when she went to them when her husband was first missing they didn't give her the proper help she needed.
Officer Kent Olson seeks to solve this cold case quickly to return to regular duties.
Despite her determination to not trust officers or have anything to do with them on a personal level Liana can't help but be intrigued by this man.
This is one book I won't forget anytime soon.
I could not put this book down once I started it, reading it all in one sitting.
I really enjoyed it and definitely look forward to whatever she has in store for us next reading wise.

This is my first time reading a cold case mystery and Widow's Secrets didn't disappoint. The author had shared on social media some information about the book with her readers. I liked that this story took place in Adams County Ohio which isn't far from where I live. I knew that I had to read this book. I loved when the author mentioned places and interstate highways in the story. Made everything seem so real and especially since interstate 32 runs behind my apartment.
This was a story about a women who was abused by her husband. This went on for years until he just up and disappeared. Days , weeks, months and then years went by with the abused victim not knowing whether one day her missing husband would once again walk through her front door and pick up when he left off. Life for her hadn't been good. The police detective in charge of the case even suspected her of being behind her husband's disappearance. Then one day the widow received the news that her husband's body had been found and he had been dead for the past ten years.
The cold case is now being investigated by Officer Kent Olson. The Widow Liana Mann has secrets she isn't sharing with anyone. Not even handsome Kent Olson. Would these secrets help Olson find out who killed Billy Mann?
Readers of Mystery books will enjoy this story. Also readers of Love Inspired books and fans of the Author. This book can be read as a stand alone.
I purchased a copy of this book. A review was not requested. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I first became a fan of Gray’s books when I read her Secrets of Crittenden County series, which combines both Amish & Englisch worlds, romance, and an unsolved mystery with a little suspense thrown in too. So I was delighted to return to these ‘roots’, so to speak, and read her cold case novel Widow’s Secrets. Everything I love about Gray’s writing – her warm style, her engaging characters, and her sweet romances – shines just as brightly in this new book too, and I became very invested in Liana and Kent’s journey. And for Gray’s Amish fiction fans, while this book isn’t heavy on Amish influence, it is set in Amish country and Liana’s Amish neighbor does play a small role. So it’s like getting the best of all worlds (or the worst of none if you aren’t an Amish fiction fan).

Liana has been through a lot and, while she’s found some measure of peace in the ten years since her abusive husband’s disappearance/discovery/murder, the secrets she’s holding on to prevent her from fully embracing the new life she’s built for herself. I loved all the dimensions to Liana’s character and how tenderly Gray wove some of the more sensitive layers into her story. Kent’s investigation of Liana’s husband’s murder provides a natural reason for them to spend time together, sharing some of their past hurts and their future dreams, and I enjoyed their interactions as well as their immediate connection. The pace of their relationship felt realistic and sweet, and I just plain enjoyed watching them become friends and fall in love.

The mystery is intriguing, too, and gives you the sense that whatever Kent & Liana uncover could upend everything for her all over again – or it could be the catalyst for healing. The fact that it could go either way (and that I wasn’t entirely sure which way it would go) added an extra element of suspense. There were several possibilities of suspects and my clarity on whodunit began to sharpen in step with the flow of the story. In other words, I wasn’t too far ahead of the crime solvers but I also wasn’t totally surprised when all was revealed.

Bottom Line: Shelley Shepard Gray kicks off this new imprint in style, with an emotionally-compelling story and fantastic characters. The cold case investigation in Widow’s Secrets is entertaining and well-plotted, and readers will fall in love with Liana and Kent even as they fall for each other. Colorful supporting characters soften some of the more sobering aspects of Liana’s past and will put a smile on your face and give your heart a little lift too. Gray’s down-to-earth writing voice wraps around you like a soft quilt, and you won’t want to put the book down once you’ve started. Perfect for long-time fans of this author or those who are new to her books.

Widow's Secret is cold case inspirational romance written by Shelley Shepherd Gray. This story brings to light the importance of closure in life's tragedies. The characters are amazing and very likeable. The story builds on the mystery until the end to keep the readers interest. Liana Mann has moved on from the disappearance of her abusive husband and believes after ten years he is deceased. When the remains of her husband are discovered Officer Kent Olson is brought on the cold case to find closure. Liana is not sure what help she can be to the officer but finally agreed to try. As the two try to unravel the mysterious death they run into many road blocks. As the suspect list continues to grow Liana's brother is at the top. When secrets the brother and sister are hiding come to light it forces officer Olson to take a different approach. Will they be able to close this case after ten years or must they admit defeat? I enjoyed getting to know Liana's story.

I did receive a complimentary copy of this book to read and review from the author but was not expected to post a favorable response only an honest one. All opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Author Shelley Shepard Gray often writes Amish fiction, and even though this book includes Amish characters, the main focus is on Englishers who are drawn into a ten-year-old police case that's never been solved. As the story opens, the body of Liana Mann's husband is discovered and she's finally convinced that he won't be coming home. What isn't known is who murdered him in such a brutal manner.

Gray's characters are well-developed and their past histories add many layers to the plot. Liana had been abused and, after years of withdrawing into a private world of fear and distrust, she's just now found inner peace from her art and her special friendship with Amish neighbors. Is it any wonder that she would be wary of Officer Kent Mann, and his investigation that threatens to undermine any happiness she has achieved? In his efforts to solve the murder, Kent becomes a more sympathetic police officer and his friendship with Liana indicates that a deeper relationship may be possible. Can he persuade her to trust again?

Questions multiply, and the mystery deepens, as Liana and Kent work together to finally bring closure to this 'cold case'. Several twists and turns kept me guessing and seeing Liana blossom is a joy. Widow's Secrets is a touching story filled with sweet romance, hope, and forgiveness, and I recommend it to all who enjoy inspirational romantic suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

I was lucky to receive this book gifted to me by the author! It was fun and interesting to read a contemporary book with mystery and some romance and a touch of Amish life. I am very used to reading this author's Amish books, and loved this one too.
The main character, Liana, suffered for years at the hands of her abusive husband. Suddenly he is gone without a trace. And ten years later, a police officer takes on this cold case. Will the results be devastating in Liana's life or bring the closure needed for her?

There is lots of intrigue and hints of what might have happened, yet I wasn't sure until the end how things would work out. It was a good read and kept me guessing!

From the Love Inspired line of books, Shelley Shepard Gray adds a good story. My favorite part is the last four chapters or so! The suspense really ramps up there.
For those looking for an Amish connection, it's not really that kind of book, that's just the area it's set in.
I received an early paperback of the book and am happy to provide a review as I do with any book I read.

Rating as a movie: PG-13 for mentions of murder, drugs, and violence

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½👩‍🎨👮🏼‍♂️

My thoughts: 🔖Page 120 of 222 Chapter Seventeen - The cold case isn't as good as the other one and I'm having trouble believing this coupling, I don't feel the chemistry, other than that it's a good story.
🔖143 Chapter Twenty-One - This has gotten a lot better but I feel like the mystery part isn't moving fast enough. I reread from Chapter Ten to refresh my memory.

This had a slow start but the police work picked up in the end and the romance became more believable. A lot of developments were going on with just the MCs, they each had multiple pursuits and issues to deal with. Overall it was good, but let me tell you the preview of Cold Case Manhunt overshadowed this story. There was so much excitement in the first chapter, I don't usually read previews but I'm glad I did. It's actually not part of this series so I wouldn't have found it on my own. I'm definitely picking that one up before the year is over.

Recommend to others: Yes! This was a good story. I already have Amish Fugitive in my Kindle library for next week.

What a wonderful mystery !!!!!

This book pulls you in. You feel for Liana and want to see her paintings. Have a piece of Gabe's pie. Have dinner with Kent's parents. But the mystery? Who did it? I was sure I knew and I was wrong.

There are hard truths to be faced within these pages. And great wisdom. Maybe I too spend too much time looking at the past when the future is open for more of God's blessings.

I highly recommend this book. It goes on your must-read list. Available via Kindle Unlimited.

Have you ever had anyone tell you to believe in love? Liana’s Amish neighbors had just returned from a trip to celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary, and the neighbor lady came over to give Liana some fresh berries and bread. Liana asked for relationship advice and the neighbor told her to believe in love. For a young woman who was married for four years to an abusive husband before he disappeared and was found dead ten years later, that could be some difficult advice to hear. The story contains multiple secrets and a fair share of unexpected twists that keep the readers on their toes, wondering where the story will take them next. Kent Olson is a man on a mission, with the need to prove himself as a capable police officer. Can he solve this cold case without destroying the widow who has caught his attention? I enjoyed the camaraderie between Liana, Viv, and Angel as they worked together at the diner. I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

I enjoyed reading this book. Shelley Shepard Gray is a talented author and her gift of creating an interesting, heart-touching story shines all throughout this book. It’s different from most “Love Inspired Suspense” books that are action-packed from beginning to end. Since this is a “cold case” story, the reader gets to know the characters in depth over the length of the book as they work together to solve a murder that had occurred ten years earlier. I found Liana’s story to be especially poignant and I loved seeing her grow from sad resignation to a life full of hope. I also liked that this storyline felt complete and never rushed just to get to the end. When I finished the book, I felt as if I’d read a full length novel.

Two things to know about this book:
(1) Although the cover of this book shows an Amish buggy, it’s not completely about the Amish. The story does take place in Amish country and Liana’s neighbors are Amish, but the main emphasis of the story is on Liana and Kent, who are both Englishers. I liked how the author showed Liana and her Amish neighbors encouraging each other.

(2) A major part of Liana’s story is that she suffered from domestic abuse. There’s no graphic description of abuse and this part of the story is appropriately written. If this is an emotional trigger for you, be aware of this before you begin reading the book.

This book goes on my list of my favorite “Love Inspired” books.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I'm a sucker for cold case mysteries, which is why I picked this one up. The cover is somewhat misleading (the heroine is not Amish but has Amish neighbors...) and the inspirational elements are more pronounced in this particular story than in some other Love Inspired Suspense titles I've read.

Heroine's no-good, abusive husband vanished 10 years ago. As each day and year passes she breathes a little easier. Until 10 years later when the police finally find his body. She's now making a name for herself as an artist but she's still living with hesitancy, unsure of herself, and lacking confidence.

The hero is a cop who bungled a case and has been "banished" to cold cases. His father is basically Super Cop and the hero has spent his life living in his shadow. He desperately wants to solve the case and needs the heroine's cooperation.

The mystery is pretty good, but the heroine and hero didn't always rub me the right way. Also there's a little too much talk of forgiveness for my liking - mainly because the heroine's dead husband, quite frankly, got what he deserved. Yes, that probably makes me a bad person. No, I do not care. Did appreciate that the heroine, and her brother, have a healthy distrust of the police given how the heroine was treated right after her husband's disappearance.

Good, not great, but not bad.

This Love Inspired Cold Case story by Shelley Shepard Gray is a masterful story in every way. I couldn’t put this book down till the end. Gray is a gifted author writing a variety of genres with likable characters, complex plots and gems for readers to glean from the story.

This Cold Case held a mystery surrounding a murder ten years earlier and an inspirational theme. Artist Liana Mann didn’t trust law enforcement after their approach to the disappearance of her husband ten years earlier. Officer Kent Olson wanted her to work with him in solving this cold case after the remains of her husband had been found. She wasn’t sure she could work with him as there were secrets that few knew about or spoke openly about. Officer Olson was persistent and wanted to solve the case so he could be back in his initial role with the department. The story flowed easily with plenty to wonder when and if Officer Olson, Liana and others would finally have answers. The beauty of the story is how Gray brought Liana out of her shell with her hidden artistic talent along with finding new beginnings.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own opinion.

Author Shelley Shepard Gray is well known for her Amish stories. But she also writes contemporary stories that are equally as good. In Widow’s Secrets she has characters that are strong, and well developed, yet with past pains and yearning for peace.

Liana and Kent make a good team as they work together to solve a mystery. I found this intriguing as I’ve never heard of the police working with a civilian on a murder case, but it added another layer of interest to the story. I did feel they came to trust each other a bit soon but it’s a shorter book and things move more quickly so they can be wrapped up by the end.

Gray does write about spousal abuse, so if this is a trigger for you please be aware that it is an important part of this story. It is written well but still may make the story challenging for someone who has dealt with this. The author goes on to show hope of healing from the emotional scars, which I really appreciated.

I truly enjoyed this book and read through it quickly. If you like suspense with lots of surprises then I recommend Widow's Secrets.

Ten years after the murder of her husband, Liana Mann receives a visit from police officer Kent Olson, who informs her they have found the remains of her husbands body. So many questions are unanswered-who killed her husband and why? Is the killer looking for her? Does Liana know more than she is willing to admit? Liana is hesitant to talk about her husband with Kent because she doesn’t trust him or any of the police officers. But gradually she lets down the wall she has built up. Will they be able to solve this cold case file together?

This book was action packed and held my interest from page one. You won’t be disappointed!

This was enjoyable from the start to the finish. Likeable characters, good writing, great pacing, and just enough clues to keep you guessing and rooting for hope to triumph over fear and doubt. I also liked how Liana’s artwork played a role in the book and in the development of the character’s relationships.

While I’m not particularly into Amish-themed books, I know the author is well known for those. Maybe she’ll be my entry into the genre. Still, this book may have an Amish character or two, but I’d call it a straightforward contemporary mystery and a delightfully clean & wholesome romance.

I have always loved Shelley Shepard Gray's books. This one was a good read and took you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. If you've ever known or been abused, you will understand the frustration of the main character. If you ever lived or known a dysfunctional family, you will relate to the main character's reactions. Everyone in the book wants to grow and move past their previous valleys. It will tug at your heart and force you to think about situations. It's a good read, but be prepared to be reminded He's always with us.

To start with, this is in no way an Amish book. Two or three brief scenes with an Amish neighbor and one with an Amish store sign does not an Amish book make.
I am still giving it 4 stars because it was a very good mystery and book. It is a clean cozy mystery.
