Finally! Of all the books in this series, this is the one I was waiting for. Monet got his start painting caricatures along the docks of Le Havre. In his youth, my grandfather lived and roamed that same area. If only his dad (my great-grandfather) had bought even one caricature from that young artist ... but it probably would have been destroyed in the war. I sometimes wonder if they ever exchanged a curt nod of the head or a polite "Bonjour."
This book doesn't disappoint. What makes this series a favorite of mine is that it doesn't overwhelm the reader. Muhlberger interweaves critical facts about the man's life with the development of the artist's distinctive style. Only twelve paintings are presented -- enough to introduce without confusing. (The books I've read have been about male artists, but he did write one about Cassatt.)
