Az abszurd humor immár kultikus magaslatokat ostromló pápái utolsó közös filmjükben, Az élet értelmében visszatérnek gyökereikhez (a Monty Python's Flying Circus című tévésorozathoz) és hosszú, egybefüggő történet helyett több apró sztorival borzolják a jóízlésűek idegeit. Az csak természetes, hogy számukra semmi sem szent! A kötet a film forgatókönyvét tartalmazza.
Graham Chapman was an English comedian, actor, writer, physician and one of the six members of the Monty Python comedy troupe. He was also the lead actor in their two narrative films, playing King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the title character in Monty Python's Life of Brian.
Elfogult olvasó vagyok, bár apológiákba inkább ne kelljen emiatt soha senkinek bocsátkoznia: az olvasás egy elfogult művelet, jó esetben. Az élet értelme, az pedig szerintem "jó eset", hiszen az egyik kedvenc filmem, még a nagyon erős Monty Python -és határvidéke mezőnyből is illetlenül kitüremkedik. Mindezidáig angolul röhögtem-szörnyülködtem-rötyögtem stb végig, bár lehet, hogy becsúszott legalább pár részlet magyarul, vagy magyar felirattal is, az évek során. ahogy Bárány Ferenc írja az utószóban, nem könnyű film, talán csak többedjére adja magát. Na de ez nem is a film, hanem a magyar filmszövegkönyv (vagy forgatókönyv) recenziója, és igyekszem abból kiindulni, hogy a célközönség nem érti az angol verziót, ezért nagyon jó hogy van ez a kiadvány. A magyar szöveg, a fordítás nagyjából eléggé rendben is van, bár van pár baki, de nem szórakoztatom magam vagy mást a kimazsolázásukkal, és nincs olyan nagy jelentősége. Egy valami viszont határozottan zavart: dalszöveg-fordításban azért a magyar eléggé rosszul szerepel. (Ezért is örülök, ahányszor csak nem próbálják leszinkronizálni a filmdalokat!) Persze jó, ha megértjük mondjuk mi hangzik el a Galaxy Song-ban, csak olyan ez mint a magyarosított táncdalfesztivál-slágerek kb.
Monty Python is the best comedy group ever. And they are not just making fun, they raise crucial questions:
- What is the meaning of life?
They take a light approach and the public has fun. But there is a paramount importance to the issues raised.
Religion is discussed and criticized. One of the first important fragments of this comedy deals with a really large family that keeps growing.
While we’re watching, a new infant drops on the floor from his mother’s womb, parent who is portrayed by Terry Jones. The father, played by Michael Palin, returns home to say that he has no option but sell them for medical experiments.
And I have no idea how many kids he has: 56? 83? The point being the ridiculous and ultimately criminal insistence of the church that sex is only ok if it produces children.
A couple across the street from these Catholics laughs at their predicament, even if the husband has nothing to recommend his thinking. He boasts that he is a protestant and therefore can have sex any time he wants and without consequences. His spouse is aroused in a funny manner, but protests that they are really the same as their neighbor in the sense that:
“Harry Blackitt: Because... every time they have sexual intercourse, they have to have a baby. Mrs. Blackitt: But it's the same with us, Harry. Harry Blackitt: What do you mean? Mrs. Blackitt: Well, I mean, we've got two children, and we've had sexual intercourse twice. Harry Blackitt: That's not the point. We could have it any time we wanted.”
Still on the subject of God, religion that has annoyed critics of the comedy group so much that it wanted some of its films banned:
“Chaplain: Let us praise God. O Lord... Congregation: O Lord... Chaplain: ...Ooh, You are so big... Congregation: ...ooh, You are so big... Chaplain: ...So absolutely huge. Congregation: ...So absolutely huge. Chaplain: Gosh, we're all really impressed down here, I can tell You. Congregation: Gosh, we're all really impressed down here, I can tell You. Chaplain: Forgive us, O Lord, for this, our dreadful toadying, and... Congregation: And barefaced flattery. Chaplain: But You are so strong and, well, just so super. Congregation: Fantastic. Humphrey: Amen. Congregation: Amen.”
A favorite part of mine comes at the end, where Death makes a stunning appearance that is unexpectedly funny:
“Host: It's a Mr. Death, dear. He's here about the reaping. Grim Reaper: Englishmen, you're all so fucking pompous. None of you have got any balls… Grim Reaper: You are all dead. I am Death. Host: Well, that's cast rather a gloom over the evening, hasn't it? Grim Reaper: Shut up, you American. You Americans, all you do is talk, and talk, and say "let me tell you something" and "I just wanna say." Well, you're dead now, so shut up.”
And finally, the Meaning of Life?
“Lady Presenter: M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations…”
The final Monty Python film brings them full circle with a collection of sketches themed to give us the meaning of life by breaking it up from the cradle to the grave, starting with ‘The Miracle of Birth’ and ending with ‘Death’.
The script book obviously does not bring home the glory of the film but with its lavish production is a thing of beauty worthy of display on any coffee table. It also gives us ‘The Adventures of Martin Luther’ which was cut after test screenings and returns ‘The Crimson Permanent Assurance’ to where it was in the narrative before it was separated to become the second feature on the cinema run.
The Meaning of Life is less satisfying than The Quest for the Holy Grail or The Life of Brian but still a worthy addition to the Monty Python cannon.
I seem to remember it was chaptered as the film, but sadly with very little extra Pythoness within.
I do remember the wonderful John Cleese vs. The Sun rebuttal letters re-produced on the inside cover(?), which highlighted how much the Sun reporters were a bunch of lying b*stards.
Pięknie wydany scenariusz, z mnóstwem kadrów z filmu. I oczywiście to jest wspaniała, kultowa rzecz też i dla mnie, ale momentami męczyłam się. Niektóre skecze w druku wyraźnie tracą bez szalonej energii, modulacji głosu i przebieranek Pythonowców znanych z wersji filmowej.
My subjective and biased opinion is that this is one of the best books ever written, my such decision solely based on the fact it be the original screenplay of one of my favourite movies. Furthermore, in the book one would find extra sketches, which were, I presume, cut out of the final version of the film. This helps, I find, to feel one were a part of the whole process of the making of the movie and in addition grants one with exclusive elements of the cinematic masterpiece, which is why this screenplay is a vital tool in the shed of every Monty Python fan, having a sweet tooth for collectibles.
